Librarian's note: This is an alternate cover edition for ASIN: B00JX6VYJ8.
The biggest problem with Over the Edge is it ends with a cliffhanger, where one of the main characters may be mortally wounded.
Mia and Damien meet at a hostel after she flees across the country to escape her abusive father. He helps her find a job, a cheap room in the hostel and a the start of a new life. Romance develops between the two until tragedy strikes at the end of this part of their story. I do hate cliffhangers.
Mia is a constant punching bag for her father, her mother is too. He says it is because they both act like whores, and it is his Biblical duty to make sure they behave. After one particularly brutal beating, Mia's mother sneaks in her room and forces her to run away from her Texas home and everything she knows. Mia's upbringing has been very sheltered, her father has controlled everything about her life, when she came, where she went, who she went with. Now her mother is pushing her out of their home, leaving 18 year old Mia on her own for the first time.
Mia ends up in Boston, at her friends urging. She quickly finds more than she bargained for in Boston. She has a place to live, and a place to work in less than 24 hours. She also has sparked an interest in Damian. But with no experience with boys, only one friend in town, what will Mia make of Damian's advances? Will Damian turn out to be the bad boy her parents would surely see, or will he be Mia's diamond in the rough? How will Mia change once she settles into life in Boston with no family to turn to?
Erika told a great story with this book, I am dying to read the rest of the story. Mia's story is written in an easy to read fashion, even the parts that emotionally aren't so easy to read. Within a few pages, I had Mia pictured in my mind. Damian too. Child abuse is a touchy subject, but Erika does it with grace. She doesn't get too specific, just enough to make you see how this will all effect Mia, her mother, and her father in the long run.
This was a book I could not put down, reading it in one sitting. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a good old love story. There's plenty of sex, but once again, Erika only tells you the basics, she's not vulgar at all! I love the characters, not just Mia and Damian, but supporting characters as well. I love Damian! There, I said it, whether or not he is the right guy for Mia, I love him!
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
Mia is still in high school when she is forced to leave her childhood home, mother and abusive father. She leaves Texas and heads to Boston with very little money, life experience or hardly any idea of what she is going to do. With the help of a friend’s older sister in Boston she secures a place a stay and soon a job. For someone who has lived her life sheltered under her father’s version of the bible and rules – she gets a crash course of the real world and adapts rather quickly.
This is two rather short stories placed together in a boxed set. I read each of them in a day and felt the flow was fast moving. I liked the story, and enjoyed the read well enough but I wasn’t wowed nor did I love it. Mia and Damien are likeable characters but I felt everything about them was rushed. I don’t feel like I have a decent picture of them in my head their descriptions weren’t vivid and didn’t make them come off the pages at me.
Some of the story seemed tedious or immature. The whole Caroldactyl part of the story I could have done without. I didn’t like the character, but the way Mia treated her seemed out of character and it was needless filler for a story that could have used more detail elsewhere.
I feel like I am writing all negative things about a story I didn’t hate. I just feel that there was a lot of room for improvement. I think the author has talent… she kept me engaged; I just think this story lacked the polish of a good editor. There was too much conflict from different sources and not enough development into the characters.
This was a quick and enjoyable read, the author kept you turning the pages – I just see her potential for so much more.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. What a great start to this book series. There were so many emotions I felt while reading this. Mia is a strong woman with a dark past but she opens her self up to the world after running from her past. Mia meets Damien when she gets to Boston and there is an instant friend but both them of realize there is more there than just friends. There was a cliff hanger ending end I can't wait to see how this plays out.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book series is totally different from her other series. Mia is a young woman with a sheltered hard upbringing who was forced to grow up quickly. Throw out into the world, she ends up in Boston and meets Damien who instantly befriends her but then they become more than just friends. Just when you think everything is going well...then BAM..tragedy strikes.... I'm dying to find out what happens next....
this story is full of emotions and a great read, Mia has been brought up in a very sheltered life, her parents very strong in their church beliefs and sent to a church school but her home life is far from rosy her dad is ex military with alcohol issues and beats her and verbally abuses her until her mum gets her out of there. this will pull at your heart strings but you can't stop reading, I will definitely be reading the next part to this.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quick read. Erika Rhys draws you into the story and you feel what is happening in the book. I did feel the story was kinda rushed... but oh my gosh the cliffhanger...
What a great book, I received an ARC of Over The Edge Vol 1 in exchange for my honest review. I could not put the book down, even when I had to it was quite difficult. I was hooked from the very first couple paragraphs. I experienced all different emotions with this book and am extremely excited to read the rest of the series.
I really enjoyed this book. It was so good that I finished it in a night (and I am a slow reader normally). I just could NOT put the Kindle down...I really look forward to any future volumes of this one...
The foundation of the story was good. However, when they got to the "moment," it was bah. The story ends on a cliffhanger, developed quickly in the last chapter.
