Blessing and Light

Rate this book
It’s the Night of Winter Lights.

Heedless of the holiday, the Commander of the H’Aren fortress, Captain Torýn Torhdhar, seems to find his satisfaction in work.

Such occurrence hardly surprises his Orderly, Sæbastyn Hyago, even though the young Lieutenant has spent a silent, aching decade wishing his superior officer would pursue pleasure elsewhere—specifically in his arms. But as the evening continues, nothing about it meets Sæbastyn’s expectations. Will the Lieutenant see his secret desires realised, or his heart shattered?

This alternative winter holiday short, set in the Order Universe, will be available FREE in December as a part of the 2017 Rainbow Advent Calendar.

“Now tell me.”(...)
“What is it you want?” (...)

“I want to stay here. With you.”

Short, seasonal read set in the Order Series universe.

Taking place on the Winter Lights Festival, once again this Author has created an atmospheric read packed into about 16 pages.

Captain Toryn Torhdhar took Saebastyn in and made him into a Soldier 10 years ago.He has been devoted to Toryn and just a bit in love with him for all those years.

Will this be the night that Saebastyn has been dreaming of,when his feelings finally get reciprocated?

I love this Author's writing. Her words and characters pull you in right from the first page and don't let go.

== A *FREE* Holiday Read ==

Confession time
. For many years now, I've found it very difficult to enjoy short stories. They've been right up there with anthologies on my dislike-o-meter.

Then I started reading Kasia Bacon's "The Order" series and my short story world view shifted a bit.

This fantasy series is about elves, assassins, warriors and the conflicts between warring factions across the fictional land.

And it's been so much fun. This short story was no exception.

Kasia uses an economy of words, but they always seem very poignant and impactful in the final product.

She has a way of drawing me in neck-deep and making me care about the characters, immediately feeling their connections and pulling me right into the fantastical world that she's created.

There's a sensuality to the writing, without things *necessarily* turning sexual, which I really enjoy and have seen very few other authors pull off quite so well.

In "Blessing and Light", she has two brand new characters for us, Captain Torýn Torhdhar, a fortress Commander, and his Lieutenant Sæbastyn Hyago, his Orderly, whom he rescued from poverty as a youth a decade prior.

Sæbastyn isn't afraid of the stoic Torýn and tends to blurt out whatever crosses his mind. Well, other than his true feelings toward Torýn, that is.

I loved how Kasia wrote a story where, on the surface, it only seems that the pair are sharing an evening meal, when in reality, it's so very much more.

The woman definitely knows how to write amazing UST and, even though this story only ended with a kiss (or two), it still left me extremely satisfied. Sometimes less truly is more.

This short story can be read as a standalone; however, as I'm a huge fan of both "The Mutt" and "The Highlander", if you have the time, I'd suggest those short fantasy reads as well.

4.25 *concise-&-heart-felt* stars.

** PS -- I *need* her next Order installment, "The Scout" and the full-length novel that she's working on. : )

I might sound like a prick but I will be lying if I say I wasn’t green with envy whenever my friends posted the review of this short story or their status changed to “reading now”. I know that it’s going to be free and it’s going to be available in December but I couldn’t wait. Really, I was dying to read this 15 pages short novel because I knew every would would be gold. Thank god, author Kasia Bacon took pity on me and graciously gifted me with this early copy. Again, anyone who have known me for long time knows this, ARC or not, I say what I feel. If it’s good, I’ll say it’s good and if it’s terrible, I’d say it’s terrible. And let me tell you my friends, this short story was MARVELOUS! 😍😍😍

In just mere 5000 words and 15 pages, the author made my heart ache, made me lost in the reverie of my own holidays thoughts. I was going down a memory lane while I was reading this short story. I was sad, I was afraid, my heart aches and long for family and love and then in a flash, she gave me joy, utter happiness, true love, family, sacrifice, togetherness and most importantly, the POWER of HOPE and never giving up. In about 15 mins of reading this short one, I was going through myriad of emotions and thoughts. This is the kind of book that makes you question about priorities and everything you value in life. I can’t thank Kasia enough for this wonderful gift. Really, I felt like I received an early Christmas gift and I can’t even say how much I enjoyed this. 😇 I hope you all will enjoy this story when it becomes available for I’m sure this would bring you such joy and hopefulness.
😊🙏😊

Favorite excerpt from the book: 💗💜💗

What a huge surprise this one has been! I don't know how is it possible for a so, so short length read to concentrate that much, but it touches banter, a bit of angst and love in a perfect way.
Wonderful writing too, and so evocative. I could feel the cold night described in that first page. So good.

This is a super short story included in The Order Universe but perfectly suitable for outsiders, like me. Not for a long time, I must say. The Mutt, The order #1 is now up in my extended tbr. I seriously loved the way she writes.

What is this freebie about? Fireworks in The Night of Winter Lights, two attractive characters having dinner and a wish becoming true.

Blessing and Light will be out for free on December 5 and if what I've said is not incentive enough you have the plus that this has been written for a charity cause, to support LGBT rights, and that's always a good thing!

Ah another sweet read from KB, a perfect novella for this holiday seasons where magic is in the air and wishes come true. Well at least for a certain orderly named saebastyan who has been longing for his captain Toryn for along time but it only takes one special night and a little push for love to finds its way. As always it only takes a few words to get hooked with these characters and even though they're short reads I'm loving how we can get a glimpse of who their hearts belong to. Can't wait for more. ❤️

This book is short and I do mean short it’s only 13 pages on my iPad but like the previous books from this author it never feels that short.
It’s detailed, atmospheric and beautifully written leaving you wanting more.
The reason it’s so short is explained

‘Dear Reader, I have written this holiday freebie for the 2017 M/M Advent Calendar. The event called for seasonal stories that did not exceed five thousand words in length.’

Sæbastyn Hyago has been in love with Captain Torýn Torhdhar since he saved him 10 years earlier. Back when Sæbastyn was just an illiterate peasant boy with a whipped scarred back and a broken spirit and Torýn made him into a soldier and Sæbastyn has loved him in secret ever since.

We meet Torýn and Sæbastyn at the time of the Winter Lights Festival where Torýn has a gift for Sæbastyn but will the gift bring them closer or separate them completely?

This is such a beautiful little read.

I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the author, thank you so much Kasia.

I’m beginning to think Ms Bacon has a bit of magic somewhere in her family tree. Maybe an elf or two. Or perhaps a fairy. She can weave magical intrigue into such a few pages, she must be touched by something.

This holiday shorty is part of MM Advent calendar. The writing has an Old World feel to it and is set in The Order world. It’s definitely a quickie but sweet holiday read. And can I just say, I love the cover.

As always, I look forward to reading more of Ms Bacon’s work.

The audio just makes this wee little shortie even better. Love the narrator, love the sharp British accent and could listen to stories in this universe for days, and inhaled this in one go.

Original review of the ebook

I love this author, I really do. Not many could write a super short story and drag me right back into the world she created quite like she does. I'm not a novella fan, I usually feel short-changed when reading them yet this one is the shortest I read and really enjoyed it. It's quality, not quantity that matters and Ms Bacon has that magical quality .... in spades.

I adore Kasia Bacon's writing!! So unique! It's like you can really travel into the characters' world. I fell in love with both short stories in The Order series: The Mutt and The Highlander.

Even if I’m not a fan of fantasy books or short stories, Kasia Bacon makes me adore her characters. I was dying to read more about elves and archery, about their passions and their wars. I can't wait to finally read a full novel in The Order series!

Blessing and Light stands alone in the Order Universe. It's a very short story, but as always the writing is flawless.

We get a glimpse into the Night of the Winter Lights Festival - how great is that Kasia Bacon invented a winter holiday? I told you - unique!
Oh and I am completely enchanted by the main characters' names: Lieutenant Sæbastyn Hyago and Captain Torýn Torhdhar.

I think it really was a challenge for the author to write such a short story. I'm extremely grateful for the ARC. *bowing my head*

This alternative winter holiday short, set in the Order Universe, will be available FREE in December as a part of the 2017 M/M Advent Calendar - as mentioned by the author.

I normally shy away from stories this short, because they almost always feel like they're missing something. I ran across this author's work a few months ago, however, and saw that she can write a short story like nobody's business! I loved The Mutt and The Highlander, so when given the opportunity to read Blessings and Light I, of course, said yes!

Kasia Bacon sets the scene for a Winter Festival so beautifully. In modern life, we don't often take the time to really enjoy holidays (well, I don't, anyway), with them being rampant with family stress and commercialism. But with the story Bacon has created here, I wanted to experience all of it -- the food, the camaraderie, the celebration of lights.

15 pages should not be enough to get a sense of environment and characters and connection, but the author manages it beautifully here. I wouldn't say no, though, to more about Torýn and Sæbastyn.

Blessings and Light is a gorgeously written holiday nibble, and I'd highly recommend it.

4.5 HEARTS--That massive frustrated yowl you can hear is me.

Once again Kasia Bacon leaves this reader wanting an entire book. A holiday short set in the Order universe with new characters, Blessings and Light is 5K of well constructed pining.  I love well written pining.

Orderly & Lieutenant Sæbastyn Hyago has crushed on his commander Captain Torýn Torhdhar for years. He knows his quirks, his needs before his Captain even notices, his likes, his...everything. And the one thing that Sæbastyn wants is to be his Captain's.

He thinks it fruitless, so he pines internally and serves him the best his position allows him to. Mighty Captain Torýn is so clueless.

Or is he?

After reading this short. I fins myself questioning just how clueless the Captain is. I want to know all the nooks and crannies. We get a taste of Sæbastyn's background. I want it all. You know what else I want? Torýn's POV. I want in his head during every moment he interacted with his orderly. The short is told exclusively from Sæbastyn's POV. It's been well documented my enjoyment of this author's words and she can infused a lot of depth and emotion from a few words. Such is the case with Blessings and Light, which is slightly lighter in tone than Bacon's previous works (All are recommended)

Very enjoyable alternative holiday short that wasn't super sweet, offered a bit of cheer and left me needing more.

I'll be back on the sidelines, waiting for more. Please let there be a novel coming soon from this author!

What an incredibly sweet and romantic holiday short. I'm enjoying everything I'm reading by Kasia Bacon, everything is beautifully written and truly creative. As this one comes from "the Order" universe, I'm going to check into that series and see what I've been missing.

The audiobook is performed by Michael Fox who has a lovely voice and does a wonderful job with these voices.

First of all, I don’t know how Kasia does it, but honestly, her short stories are so well-written that I can’t believe I just read a book with less than 5 K words. AND I LOVED IT!

I feel like Blessings and Light was a holiday themed book because in here, people are celebrating the Night of Winter Lights and we get to know a little bit of Lieutenant Sæbastyn and Captain Torýn’s relationship.

The younger Bastyn has been Torýn’s protégé over the last decade, and as you can imagine, he has developed feelings for the stoic man. But, even though he is an intelligent and caring Captain to his subordinates, he seems oblivious of this fact.

Actually, Torýn wants to send Bastyn away in order to protect him and to have a chance to grow his wings and be more than what he is now. So, Bastyn gets cornered since he doesn’t want to leave his side, and confesses his feelings for the man. Fortunately, they do get to share a sweet moment and the promise to remain together even if a war is coming.

Now, I know I’ve been saying this non-stop but I’m still surprised how Kasia can write such well-developed characters in very few pages. The world she’s built in the Order series feels so real that I wish she would write something bigger, ‘cause I can’t get enough.

With this couple, well, I must admit that huge age gaps make me feel uncomfortable, but not with Torýn and Bastyn. In fact, they warmed my heart and had me swooning like a teenager. They’re so sweet together that I think I’ll have diabetes.

I totally recommend you this book, and it can be read as a stand-alone, but I think that you should read Kasia’s previous books so you know more about the world she’s created.

Can you believe that this is only 15 pages? And that I got INVESTED!
I mean, gimme a full length novel of these two because #Dayum.

15 pages of pining and sweet sweet love.

We get one kiss and I'm swooning so hard because it's chalk-full of FEELS!

Toryn, the captain, and Sebastyn his orderly were just lovely.

Is it tooo much to ask for a full length? Not even a full length...I would take a novella only!

This short story is set in a different part of the Order Universe than The Order series. It is set during the Winter Lights Festival in a fortress on the border between the Empire and the barbarians. The author did an awesome job of dropping us in a new location with an entirely new cast of characters and had me feeling at home almost instantly. She quickly developed the two MCs into real people who I now want to know a lot more about. Another excellent short by Ms. Bacon!!

A very short holiday story with some effective emotion. This is a moment in time for two appealing characters, as they finally recognize and give in to love, after a long time of assuming service and honor were all they had for each other. It's a sweet intro to the author's writing, if you're looking for one. And stands alone, but in a tantalizing way becasue there is so much background, and so little time here.

I give up. Really, this book is less than 5k words and yet it encompasses everything I needed to know about this corner of Kasia's fabulous world and these two new characters who are drawn with such an incredibly light touch I feel like I've already known them all their lives.

This is serious talent. The UST in this one was strung out at just the right rate and the ending was just beautiful. Sometimes you don't need to see everything on the page to know just how connected two people can be.
