Vegas Strong

58 people killed. 500+ people injured. Hundreds of first responders and civilians protecting and saving countless lives. Thousands of Las Vegas residents coming together to help. 19 stories about the city we love. October 1, 2017. It’s a day the world will never forget, and the people of Las Vegas will always remember. One man committed an act of domestic terrorism on a crowd of unsuspecting concert attendees and changed this city forever. In the days that followed, a city that was bruised and battered proved just how strong it truly is. Blood banks had lines that never ended. Food was delivered to police stations, fire stations, and community centers. Massages were donated to therapists helping everyone who needed someone to talk to. Vegas Strong was on buildings, signs, and t-shirts all over a city that came together in unexpected and beautiful ways. During those first few days, two authors had a late-night talk about what they could do to help, and this anthology was born. Authors who live in Las Vegas, or grew up here, were asked to write about their favorite places in Vegas or just Vegas itself. These are their Fiction and Non-Fiction stories. We hope you enjoy them and never forget that one person can make a difference or that love will always win against hate. Dedication and Foreword by Mathew Kaufman. All proceeds will go to the Code Green Campaign.

Crystal Perkins has always been a big reader, but she never thought she would write her own book, until she sat down in 2014 and did it. She's now published over 40 books, and has been featured in several anthologies as well.

She lived in Las Vegas for over a decade, where you could find her running author events and winning bookseller awards. She's was recently living in North Dakota to be closer to her family, but she is back in Vegas. When she's not reading a few hundred books a year or chasing after her grandson, you can find her watching hockey (Go Knights Go!) and trying to find the perfect shade of lipstick.

She loves Star Wars AND Star Trek, but if pushed to choose, it will always be Leia and her crew who come out on top. Her love of all things nerdy comes through in her book characters, no matter the genre. A mac and cheese connoisseur, she travels the world looking for the perfect version, while attending book conventions and signings as a cover for her research. Poutine research is also conducted regularly on her trips.

Her first series, The Griffin Brothers, followed four billionaire brothers, and the third book, Creating a Love, was a finalist for a multicultural award in 2014. Her second series, Corrigan & Co. featured a secret society of female spies in Las Vegas. She followed this with Society Girls, which offered a glimpse into the training of the women who are recruited into the Corrigan & Co. Foundation, and the Society. The Company Men series featured the relatives of her secret society of spies.
Activate is a Young Adult Sci-Fi standalone novel, and A Kiss Is Just a Kiss is a Romantic Comedy standalone book. If you like something darker, you can find her Horror short stories in the Never Fear anthologies!

She’s currently writing about modern day witches in her Burn series, and bridesmaids for hire who solve mysteries in The Maids! In 2020, she will also be starting a hockey novella series.

Crystal loves hearing from her readers, so please feel free to send her an email, Facebook message, or Tweet! She's also on Instagram, where you can see her monthly reads!

When we think of Las Vegas, we usually think of it has being a town which never sleeps; a fun place far, far away from urban violence, murder and the like. However, on October 1, 2017, “a day that will live in infamy” to quote FDR, a sole individual perpetrated an act of homebred terrorism, the likes of which we’ve never seen before. On this god-forsaken, wretched 58 unsuspected open-air concert going had been killed, with over 500 more injured, thereby changing the face of this city indefinitely.

Like New York City on 9/11, like Boston and its infamous marathon, Las Vegas showed the world its resiliency by saying we strong, We’re Las Vegas Strong.

There were unending lines at blood banks, free food was constantly being brought to first-responders locations and to community centers where the injured were brought to. First responders have to deal with accidents, fires, etc. where individuals might have been injured on a daily basis; but ever in the magnitude they’d been forced to endure on this day, that they needed psychological help in dealing with.

Everywhere you looked the Vegas Strong message could be seen. And it was out of this tragedy that this book was born with 19 hometown authors coming together to write anything about Vegas which would remind everything of how wonderful it is.

What I loved most about this book is that all proceeds will go to the Code Green Campaign [http://codegreencampaign.org]

According to their website, its mission is “Bring awareness to the high rates of mental health issues in first responders and reduce them. Eliminate the stigma that prevents people from admitting these issues and asking for help. Educate first responders on self and peer care and to advocate for systemic change in how mental health issues are addressed by first responder agencies.

With stories [Fiction and Non-Fiction] which show how forget that one person can make a difference or that love will always win against hate. And the fund-raising intention of this book, this book deserves far more than the 5 STARS I’m limited in giving it.

Great stories that make you feel the heart of Vegas! Some could have been left out and some needed some more editing but overall a decent anthology!

Vegas Strong, a poignant anthology compiled by Crystal Perkins, serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of a city forever changed by the tragic events of October 1, 2017. The book weaves together 19 stories, both fiction and non-fiction, capturing the indomitable spirit of Las Vegas and its residents in the face of an act of domestic terrorism that claimed 58 lives and injured over 500 people.

The anthology opens a window into the collective response of a community in crisis. The author highlights the countless acts of heroism displayed by first responders and civilians who risked their lives to protect and save others. The book also delves into the aftermath, revealing a city that, though bruised and battered, rallied together in unexpected and beautiful ways.

The collaboration between the two authors, sparked by a late-night conversation about how they could contribute to the healing process, resulted in this meaningful collection. Writers who either reside in or have roots in Las Vegas share their stories, celebrating the city's vibrancy and resilience. Whether recounting tales of favorite places or exploring the essence of Vegas itself, each narrative contributes to the overarching theme of strength emerging from adversity.

Vegas Strong not only commemorates the unforgettable day but also serves as a source of inspiration. The book emphasizes the power of unity and the ability of a single person to make a difference. The dedication and foreword by Mathew Kaufman further amplify the emotional depth of the anthology.

A unique aspect of Vegas Strong lies in its commitment to giving back. All proceeds from the book contribute to the Code Green Campaign, underscoring the authors' dedication to supporting mental health awareness among first responders.

In conclusion, Vegas Strong is a moving tribute to the resilience and solidarity of Las Vegas. Through its compelling stories, the anthology imparts a powerful message: that even in the darkest times, love can triumph over hate, and a community united can overcome any challenge. It's a testament to the enduring spirit of a city that stood strong, proving that, indeed, Vegas is stronger together.

Got this only for the Tera Lynn Childs short story in the gorgon triplets world, and it was very good. Nice to get a story in that world again :)
