After Tom flattened Zeke in a fist fight, the drunken brawler swore to kill him. Meanwhile Tom had to leave for San Francisco to meet his new bride and escort her back to Hangtown for their wedding. Zeke could be anywhere. He could strike anytime. Tom was in deep trouble.
Not a bad read, I just never got into Revenge. Feel that John Rose Putnam needs to get a little dirt and girt on his writing hands. For a Western it's written way to tame, he keeps it too clean verse writing were it's camouflaged in the storyline. Kinda of like Chucky does with his books and those he wrote for the WWJ brand.
Tom Marsh is a likable character, has a lot detail added in, he adds the history to the area into the storyline and just ambles along like the readers riding a old nag of a horse, while they are reading.
Just seems like it looks like he takes a fight, between Tom and Zeke, then drags it out into a book verse doing a short story. But that's more the publisher, since they have a few short stories, that would have made great books, if the author wrote the story into one and just feel with this one that it would be better in a short story format.
Just have Tom, with Juanito, catch up to the four freighters before they get to Coloma and Tom and Zeke get in another fight. Zeke's basically a bully, with the author's own words, he always picks fights were he knows he'll win. Against Tom, much to his surprise he realizes he under estimate him, he resorts to using his knife and ultimately ends up being killed by Tom, gutted like pig. Plus since the author keeps repeating that Tom will get hung or get arrested from killing Zeke, he gets him off the hook, by making it that Tom would never get charged for the killing, due to having too defend himself.
While this was may first read by John Rose Putnam, I actually have the first two of this series buried on my to read list and may at some point give them a try. While I didn't necessarily enjoy this one, it's perfect for anyone looking for a clean read, but if you like a little dirt, grit or not afraid to read a more adult storyline with gristle killing, raping, etc; you might want to skip this one.
This is the second book I have read with the Tom Marsh character taking full centre stage. Mind you he now has a bride to compete with. There is something so good and wholesome about Tom, that makes you cheer him on, even when you know he is planning on killing someone. A lovely well written cowboy story that I highly recommend.
This is the second book I have had the opportunity to read and both are outstanding tales of our old west. I will probably read the other three novels in this series, as I definitely enjoyed these two.
Certainly a five stars novel, as the author did an outstanding job, as he consistently carried the reader excitingly through each different episode throughout the entire book.
I certainly recommend this story to each and everyone who loves to follow our old western storylines. I am sure all of you will be as impressed with the wonderful storylines, as well as his depiction of the different characters.
In this fifth story about Tom Marsh surviving life in California's gold country, he's about to travel to San Francisco to meet his new bride and then travel back to Hangtown. But Tom has an altercation with Zeke, a drunken brawler who swears to kill Tom. Tom and his new bridge will be threatened by Zeke, and other evil men. John Rose Putnam writes fascinating stories of the Old West. I enjoy all his touching stories. And, there's romance here as well as gun fights.
JRP. has. penned the fifth novel in the Tom Marsh series, which contains the continued love story between TM. and his heart throb. The business is Booming and the gold mine is doing well. Everything is great and then TM. meets Lacy, his future intended. TM. Is not aware but his enemies of the past have shown up under assumed James with intent to do bodily harm to the newly weds. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. The fifth book in the series finds Tom Marsh finally ready to marry his true love. Unfortunately the family of the crooked sheriff he helped put away in book 4 are plotting revenge. Tom has to make sure his bride to be is kept safe while finding the men out to get him. Great characters and a good knowledge of the era make this series engaging.
The story has been told hundreds of times. It is predictable and was,to me, boring. Added to this, the writing style is ponderous. It just does not flow. Perhaps a much younger reader could enjoy this book. I did not.
A young miner is set up to be murdered by someone who he thinks is a friend. This is a fast moving Western with plenty of action. It even includes a love story. I recommend this author.
