Dark Planet Warriors #8.1

Earth Files: Book 1

Rate this book
As much as Rykal thought she was sheer perfection in that outfit, he wanted to flick out a claw and gently slice the garment from top to bottom so he could pay homage to her naked form.
Later.
She wouldn’t escape his tender clutches.
But he would behave himself for now, because this particular outing was apparently an important event in Human culture.
He was about to meet the mother of his mate.

The Earth Files are short stories (novella-length) set in the world of the Dark Planet Warriors. You can expect sweet, steamy, and offbeat stories about the colorful characters from the main series. They are intended as accompaniments to Dark Planet Warriors, and may contain the occasional spoiler.

Book 1 features Arin and Rykal, our protagonists from Forged in Shadow. It's set after Brilliant Starlight (Book 8), when the Kordolians have returned to Earth.

Although it’s a spinoff, it isn’t the spinoff. That’s coming soon.

Consider me in heaven to get a little epilogue/update from my favorite Dark Planet Warriors couple, Rykal and Arin, from my favorite book in the series, Forged in Shadow. Carven doesn't disappoint, closing several small story lines from Arin's past. Rykal gets his revenge, but not in the way you might think. The book blurb teases that this isn't the definitive spin-off, and I honestly cannot wait to consume more.

MORE

I. WANT. MORE.

Scratch that... I. NEED. MORE.

I’m a total glutton for AC’s books, her crazy Kordolians are the perfect mix of uber alpha killing machine and innocent puppy.

This book was enough to whet my appetite, any fan of DPW will love this little cutesy story, but be warned: you’ll want more. It’s a quick fix but very enjoyable nonetheless.

"Happy?" he growled.
"Happy," she agreed.'

Cute cute cute this author's writing definitely works better in smaller, bite-sized doses like this . . . also more Rykal & Arin content was wonderful.

4.5 Kordolian Stars

This is one of my top three favorite Alien Series. Anna Carven has created a world where there are those who are so dangerous the strike fear in every galaxy they have conquered. But it only takes a few human women to conquer a Kordolian Warrior.

This is a short story of Rykal and Arin and diner with a soon to be mother-in-law.

This is a short novella HEA/update for Arin and Rykal, one of my favorite couples from the Dark Planet Warriors series. I loved seeing a couple of little threads from their book get tied off in a neat little bow. I would absolutely recommend reading their book (Forged in ShadowForged in Shadow) first before reading this one. But if you have read it, I think you'll enjoy this little slice of life for them, especially if you're waiting for the next book in the spinoff series. I liked it.

DISCLAIMER: I'm giving 4 stars because it's not fair for me to go lower. I knew going in it is pontless for me to read any story listed as 70 pages long. I don't like them, I find little reason for them, and nothing happens worth mentioning.

On that note, I chose to read the book anyway. It is what any book of this length is. It's a slice of life, and in this series of books that means 80% of it is either about how sexually aroused they are for each other, or Rykal trying not kill the puny humans. In a full length novel, the Kordolians and their human mates can make for a great, fun read. Condensed down to this length, not so much.

But 4 stars, because I knew before I read it I couldn't be fair, and I have to account for the grammatical and editing errors by removing a star.

Anna Carven is one of my auto-buy author.

Not only “Forged in Shadow” is such a master piece and is the best in her series (don’t get me wrong, all of her books are GREAT!), but also Ry and Arin are my most favorite couple.
This novella completes their story.... although I wanna see more:)

I recommend you to read “Forged in Shadow” first to enjoy and to have depth understanding of the characters.

I cannot wait to read more of first division Kordorian warriors and their human mate’s stories:) vvv

Fun but quick

This was a fun quick read. Rykal and Arin's mom in the same room was not as bad as I thought. I loved how she was much mellower than Arin is used to. Also having the douche that tried to rape Arin in the same room created a very interesting situation. Add to that a bit of alcohol and things become combustible. Got some excitement and some fun but I wish there was more.

I think it's pretty cool that Rykal got to meet the notorious General Varga. The little bit of drama that helped bring an accord between them was interesting. Don't miss this shortie. It's worth it.

Just a bit of fluff to update the readers of the future of Rain and her Kordolian. There wasn't A lot of story,, just a snipet of a night meeting her mother.

I liked this. A quick novella update on Arin and Rykal, who are my favorite couple. They were the first ones I read, and they are always the first ones I go back to. It was nice to find out what is going on in their lives right now. And I saw how it's starting to lay the foundation for the spin off series as well.

**MINOR SPOILERS**
This novella is a bit of an add on to Forged in Shadow which is part of the Dark Planet Warriors series. It is better read after the novel, rather than as a standalone. It tells the story of Rykal’s first meeting with Arin’s mother and Arin’s first meeting with her mother’s new love interest. It also hints at developments in some later books.
Rykal is an alien from another planet that has mated with Arin. In Forged in Shadow, you find out that a human admiral had tried to r*pe Arin and is also responsible for her demotion and, eventually, her dishonorable discharge from the military. When meeting Arin’s mother, the admiral happens to be at the same restaurant. A bit of chaos happens as Rykal tries to respond to the situation in a way that allows for justice rather than revenge.
It was nice to see Arin’s mother express more caring towards her. In addition, she has found someone who is a good match for her.
The book emphasizes the care and love that Rykal and Arin feel for each other. There is a sweet moment at the end of the novella.
I think it would be nice for the author to include a reference list in the books. Included could be the names of the different male and female main characters, planets mentioned, aliens mentioned, and maybe a few word translations (siv, etc) that the Kordolians use.
The pace of the novella is fast. The dialogue is realistic.

Don’t let this be the end!!

I’m officially freaking out a little, after I finished reading the final book in this series their was a note from the author saying that their will be no more books on the ‘Dark Planet Warriors’. All I can say is NOOOOO 😭 im heartbroken I really am, no books for the remaining first division warriors like Ludan, Nathian, Torin, Jeral to name a few. I had my heart set on reading about the other warriors finding their mates and about their mission to rid earth of the Xargek, I can’t believe it’s ending just like that. I get it that the author wants to branch out to newer things but if theirs a demand for your series couldn’t you maybe just put it on the back burner for a later time and not just give up on it? Please Anna don’t leave your fans hanging and if any of you fans out their feel the same way I do let the author know in your own reviews too. Well I’ve ranted enough lol back to this review. I’m very happy that we are going to be given little snippets of our characters lives after their stories have ended. The author has informed us that we might get some more short stories for the other books too so here’s fingers crossed that it’s true and they’ll be on their way soon. In this installment we have our couple Rykal and Arin who’s going to introduce him officially to her mother. While at the restaurant Arin gets a blast from her past by none other than the superior officer who had her shipped off to Fortuna Tao. Rykal her sexy, possessive, protector obviously steps in and saves the day and to top if off does the sweetest most romantic thing while in their hotel room giving their love story a most beautiful ending.

I loved, loved, loved going back to see Rykal and Arin, but this is definitely a companion piece to the main series. In other words, if you're coming into this series blind, don't start here. (Seriously, pick up book 1 and start there because the series is well worth it.)

I genuinely adore getting a chance to revisit previous characters and couples so this novella hit the spot. Rykal is just as deadly and focused as always and Arin is a little on edge as she takes her honey to meet her intimidating mother for the first time.

A dollop of danger, a splash of Kordolian vengeance (just a splash, though, because even a hardened warrior can be taught new tricks), and the intense connection a warrior feels for his mate are all present. In other words, it was a perfect little peek back into the Dark Planet world.

Short story ? Very!

Though the story was well written by Ms. Carven, It was very, very short. Actually I believe it was a short chapter from the main series cut during editing. I borrowed the book through my Kindle Unlimited so no loss but if I had paid for it I would have been extremely upset. This " novella" did not advance "The Dark Planet Warriors " one iota so if you choose to bypass this book you'll lose nothing.

My favorites

These two were my favorite out of the entire series. I was foaming out the mouth waiting for this novella. I enjoyed the little love nest vibe but missed the action that typically follows these two. Would LOVE for another full fledged book for these two. Good read though.

Great Peek into the Kordolians on Earth

This book was great. I love revisiting the Kordolians and their mates and seeing how they are adjusting. I hope Ms. Carven continues to give us these short stories. Arin and Rykal are two of my favorites from this series so I loved catching up with them.

Loved this

I loved revisiting Arin and Rykal as we got this little peek into their lives together. Rykal is a perfect mixture of fierce warrior, loving mate, and just enough emotional vulnerability. I would love to read a bit more about them and perhaps see Arin and her mother as they work things out as well.

Humans are civilized, right?

The Kordolian Rykal and his human mate Arin dress nicely for dinner with Arin’s mother Allison at the upscale restaurant. Enjoy Rykal and Arin’s heightened emotions, their tense encounters with others, and their steamy moments during this—maybe not so civilized—Friday night!!!

Ms. Carven does a great job of balancing the provider and protector instincts of her male protagonists with the need for independence and choice of her female protagonists. It's such a delicate dance that I've seen a lot authors fumble and this amongst other great qualities in her writing makes her an automatic read for me.

Great short read!

This book is just as well done as the others. It is of course a short story. Just a bit of a continuation or add on if you will of Arin's and Rykal's story. Fun& short.

So sweet!

This needs to be read after book 8. Rykal and Arin are going to dinner and Ry will meet Arin's mom. This is a short story, but it isn't short on action or steam. I was so happy to revisit them!!

Arin and Rykal

This is a short story of Rykal finally meeting Arin's Mother. Rykal is finding Human society hard to navigate but Arin's first rule is no killing humans which makes it even harder.

Nice peak into a First Division Warrior's life on Earth with his Mate.
