This ain’t Grandma’s Apocalypse. Being dead isn’t all it’s cracked up to be...
Hank Merrick was a pretty unremarkable guy — until the world went and got itself destroyed. Unspeakable horrors now wander around ruined cities, claiming what little is left of the old world, and only the dead and forgotten are left to tell the tales.
Freshly expired himself, Hank’s spirit begins a mysterious misadventure — finding purpose in the afterlife. Using guile, a bit of iron, and his shambling corpse companion named Maw, Hank sarcastically slogs through the nightmare landscape. Monsters leap out from every dark corner, while an unstoppable entity of evil slowly creeps across the earth, destroying everyone in its path. What’s a ghost gotta do to catch a break?
Good Boy is one funny and crazy story about a ghost that leads his zombie body around until he accidentally loses it. But the ghost half meets some interesting characters such as a devil or two and a poltergeist. Fun, witty, and unpredictable, this story is an easy read but is not complete...:( to be continued. Enjoyed it, will look for the next book but would have preferred an ending.
Zombie fiction has certainly seen it’s fair share of oversaturation in recent years, but zombies are only a small part of a bigger picture in this story.
Interesting elements and rules (like a demonic caste system) make this stand out, and I’m super excited to see where the story goes from this entertaining jumping off point.
I need part 2 in my life NOW. This was the first book in a while to make me laugh out loud more than once. The writing is amazing, and the story is captivating. Thank you reddit for introducing me to this wonderful new author.
"Good Boy" by Seth McDuffee was a great find late last night when I was looking for one more thing to read before going to bed. What I came across was a sarcastic, bitingly funny tale of zombies, ghosts, and devils that went down smooth as molasses. Humor abounds, but so does potty language, bad attitudes, loyalty, vanity, and bad assery. Here's the reader's introduction to Hank, the main narrator:
My name’s Hank Merrick. The slobbering mess of a flesh-devourer I call Maw is actually Hank Classic. My old body. I’ll have you know that it’s extremely bizarre piloting your physical self around on a leash like some fucked up, metaphysical Master Blaster. But, such is my lot in life. Er, after-life.
I enjoyed every minute of it. The story ends with a most definite sequel right around the corner, so I will definitely be on the look out for more by this author.
It was a good read, albeit kind of short. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I’d give it five stars, but the writing feels a little ham-fisted and forced in some places. The plot also seemed to change pace too quickly near the end, separating it from the tone of the rest of the book. Still very good and I’d recommend it.
Its four stars, if it had an ending to speak of. Alas it does not.
Still, theres 3:
One for the sheer uniqueness.
One for the believable smartassery.
One for the brazen style and the sheer, unadulterated ludicrous but delightful nonsense introduction to a new fantasy world that is the books true purpose.
It was good! I guess I just wanted a more focused storyline. But it may have been a bit scattered because it was laying the land for a sequel? Also, the pop culture references were hilarious if not overused at times. Worth the short read that it is.
Enjoyed the smart-ass protagonist, and the plot was interesting, but was left with a lot of loose ends - maybe that was intentional. Not fantastic but worth reading and if the second part was published I’d read it.
Totally new take on the zombie apocalypse. Ghost leading his zombie self on a chain meeting up with a girl changing into a devil and her new devil trainer. Crazy fun!
Unoriginal and unnecessary juvenile male bravado (is too many dick jokes) marred what otherwise was a funny and interesting tale of zombies and other undead oddities.
Kind of ridiculous but entertaining. The characters were likable and it got a few laughs out of me. Lots of loose ends and feels unfinished, though. Supposedly a part 2 was coming but this came out 7 years ago….
I am DEVASTATED! I found Seth Mcduffee via Big Sneaky Barbarian (which I also adore) and when I saw that Travis Baldree did the audio narration I just knew this was going to be a great time.
Spoiler Alert- I was RIGHT!
This novella was just so good, I loved the characters, the humor, the world. This was such a fun take on the dystopian genre mixed with fantasy in a way I've never seen before. The pacing was great, the world building and plot development. Ugh, I'm just so disappointed to learn there's no follow up.
Loved the characters, plot and writing style. Creative twist on otherwise overused themes makes for an enjoyable read. The humour and character development are well established by the end of the book which is impressive given the ~160 page length of the book.
