”We were at the heart of the biggest Casino ever made. Chance was the dice and the numbers our lives.”

And here I thought “V Games” was already fast paced and left me with a severe cliff-hanger! I guess after reading “Fresh From The Grave” I’ll have to re-evaluate that first impression now. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I began to read the second book, but let me tell you that Caroline stepped up her game (pun totally intended) big time! ;-P

Book two is definitely:

- More blood thirsty
- Another level of cruel
- Even more fast-paced (I really had no idea this was actually possible XD)
- A little more romantic
- A whole lot darker than the first one (and this says quite something because let’s face it “V Games” was already pretty dark. I mean I described it as a mixture of “Resident Evil” and “The Hunger Games” so you get the idea! ;-P)

But worry not; between all the impaling and crawling for their lives the contestants of THIS V Game haven’t lost their spirit yet. So new characters are introduced, some human, some bloodthirsty and some with fur (<3) and not all of the game’s spectators are still content to sit back and to watch the show. ;-) I guess you could say the Helsings have quite a lot on their plate and I’m not only talking about a rebellious teenage daughter that begins to question her life choices and decisions! *lol*

Are you curious yet? XD

My advice: Sit down, make some popcorn, pick up the book, find out for yourself and enjoy the freaky ride show! ;-P

The characters:

And here I go with my characters section which is also known as the “don’t continue to read because their might be a lot of spoilers coming your way” section! XD It’s your choice, choose wisely and don’t say I didn’t warn you! ;-)

Selena:

”Everyone here knows what you are.”
“And what’s that?” I asked through a snarl. I wasn’t any different. No girl deserved to be here, no matter what they’d done. We were still human. We still deserved an ounce of dignity.
“You’re hope.”

WOAH!!! Selena changed quite a lot since the beginning of the first book but I suppose after everything that happened to this girl you can’t really blame her for getting a hard shell. Don’t get me wrong, she didn’t turn all dark and there is still compassion in her heart but she’s definitely not as naïve and innocent as she was in the “V Games”. There just happened too much and she crossed the line way too often to be able to maintain her innocence. So we have a way tougher Selena in this book and she doesn’t just take things in stride but even makes plans to overthrow the Helsing’s reign. Which is pretty awesome if you ask me! She’s finally willing to do everything in her power to turn the tables on the Helsing’s as well as on the other spectators of the games and I lived and breathed for it! *lol* You go girl!!!

”I’ll give you the same courtesy then.”
Varick took my arm, but I tugged free of him.
“You will?” the man asked hopefully.
“Yes,” I breathed. “I’ll bet on you surviving.” I turned away. “But I don’t like your odds.”

Varick:

”Darkness rushed in. Too quickly for me to do anything to try and stop it. The strength inside me wilted and a monster grew rapidly in its place like a weed.”

Aww my poor boy! My heart broke so much for him in this book! At the beginning he wasn’t only tortured but they also took away his most precious possession: his humanity. And I’ll never forgive the Helsing’s for that! His fight in this book was kind of terrifying to watch because for a while he was nothing more than a blood-thirsty V who preyed on the girls in the games. I was really relieved when Selena let him drink from her blood because I knew that he’d become the old Varick again. Still, just to think what it must have cost him to become human again, to feel and think about what he did to those many girls… Ahh poor Varick, I just want to hug him and make his pain go away. =((

Ignus:

”I don’t hate you,” he said, surprising me. “But I do enjoy punishing you. I want to see how far you can be pushed. How it will feel when I break you.”
I smiled and Ignus looked genuinely disconcerted by my reaction. “You can’t break what’s already broken.”

Was there ever a bigger – excuse my crude language – asshole than Ignus? There are villains you adore because they are so cunning and clever and there are villains you just hate because they have no humanity left in them. Needless to say that Ignus belongs to the second category. Seriously if anyone in this book deserves to be called a monster, than it’s definitely Ignus and not the V’s or the werewolves. Guess this already says enough about his character and I’m really glad that he’s dead now! XD Varick did the deed and even though it was a brutal and cruel way to die, I still can’t bring myself to feel bad about it. All those people he killed and tortured just because he could? He had it coming!

Ulvic:

”Ignus rested his hand on my shoulder, looking desperate. “I’m truly sorry. You know how I can be when I don’t get my way.”
I pinched my lips together, I knew exactly how he could be. Violent, vengeful, vindictive. But never with me. Not once with me.

Now that was something I didn’t see coming and to say it surprised me would be putting it more than just mildly. *lol* Ulvic and Ignus actually had something like an affair! Who would have thought it? XD Bearing this in mind it was no surprise that Ulvic was hesitant to harm the Helsing’s, it unfortunately didn’t make me any less angry or annoyed by his actions though. XD I mean I get it; he wanted to save his wolves without harming the person he once loved, but still … GAH! His character made me so angry sometimes and I couldn’t help but wonder if he would have even intervened if his pack wouldn’t have gotten involved in the games as well. He’s a coward, plain and simple and the only reason he stood his ground this time around was the simple fact that Jameson and the other two werewolves were used in the game. Well, I think in the end he paid dearly for his mistakes and I really hope it will be a lesson for him.

”I may have been a lot of things, but bloodthirsty wasn’t one of them. The problem was, no matter how desperate I was to save them, to stand up to the Helsings and fight for what I knew was right, I didn’t know if I could do it. Because, I may not have been bloodthirsty, but I was a coward. And at that moment, both traits equated to evil.”

Cass:

”In what universe would I find a stinking wolf attractive?”
“This one?” he asked hopefully.
His words caught me off guard and a snort of laughter escaped me. Bloody wolf boy. What on earth had my life become?”

Gosh, I was so happy to see Cass again but damn did this poor girl suffer! I hated that the Helsing’s turned her into a V and used her as entertainment in vampire fights and I don’t blame her for taking her rage out on them once she got a decent chance. This poor red head already went through hell and then those damn Helsings had to add to her grief as well. T_T I just hope that she will get over everything that happened to her and I definitely hope to see even more of her in the next book! I can’t wait for more chapters of her POV! =)

Jameson:

”The youngest of the group backed up, perhaps newly enrolled at the Helsing’s playground. How did one go about applying for this shit?
Wanted: creepy scientist who likes to screw with immortal beings.
It wasn’t exactly a ‘back of the newspaper kind of ad.’”

Haha! JAMESON!!! <333 I LOVE. THIS. BOY!!! Seriously, this guy turned out to be such a revelation and an asset for the entire book! I adored the chapters from his POV and I just couldn’t get enough of his (sometimes rather questionable) humour! *lol* In book one I loved Varick so much but I have to admit that Jameson actually managed to steal my heart away from him. XD He’s just too amazing not to fall in love with him and I can’t wait to find out more about him! I really want to know how he became a werewolf and what happened after Varick vanished and was turned into a vampire. I have so many questions and I hope they’ll all be answered in the next book!

”That’s it, I thought. No one bites my arse unless I say so.”

”I could have spent the time in my cage wondering why I’d ended up here. Crying about the choices I’d made in my immortal life. All that woe-is-me bullshit. But that wasn’t my style. In fact, I’d spent most of the last hour humming Gimmi Shelter by The Rolling Stones.”

The relationships & ships:

Selena & Varick:

”You remind me of the sea … the endless storm in your eyes, the flush of sunsets in your cheeks. I see a red dawn in your lips, where I once would have set my eye and sailed into its promised light. You are all the things I loved in life, embodied. And after what I’ve done, I fear losing you will bring about my death all over again.”

I had to read about 75% of the book until those two finally got together but damn was it worth the wait! With Varick in “killer mode” and Selena’s blood as his only hope to get him back to his senses it was logical that it would take a little time until they had a reunion though. So I kind of expected this when I started to read the book and wasn’t disappointed how things worked out in the end. Plus I think that it was necessary to give those two characters time to grow and to be apart from each other, because I’m pretty sure that the Selena of the first book wouldn’t have been able to stomach Varick’s dark side. If they would have gotten together in “V Games” their love wouldn’t have stood a chance but the way they developed and changed in “Fresh From The Grave” made it possible for them to be together and damn me, but Caroline pulled this off really nicely! ;-) They make a nice couple and I can’t wait to read book three! <3

”I came back for this part of you.” I laid my hand on his chest where the solid beat of his heart nearly outpaced mine. “Because even though there’s a demon inside you, you meet it on the battlefield every day. I love you in all the spaces that you’re not a monster, and I forgive you for all the places that you are.”

”Hate me,” he demanded, his mouth bushing mine.
“Never,” I breathed, a tear rolling down my cheek.

Cass & Jameson:

”What do I look like?” I pressed. I wasn’t the kind of girl to let men get under my skin any more. Even one as beautiful as him.
He tilted his head to look me in the eye. “You look like a firefly, the first light I’ve seen in all this godforsaken darkness.”

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I LOVED AND ADORED THOSE TWO!!! <333 Give me more of Jameson and Cass moments and I’ll be happy forever!! I loved how Jameson always managed to give her hope and how he tried to protect her soul from shattering entirely. They both had a tough time but they always tried to help each other and they were there for each other whenever they were close to giving up. And if we’re already at it, let’s not forget about their easy banter!!! Haha! There were so many scenes where I had to laugh out loud and I swear I could read an entire book just about them making sassy remarks! *lol* Not to mention how they kicked the spectators butts in the end! They certainly make an amazing team and I just want MORE!!! <333

”I was there on Raskdod. Do you think I didn’t notice? I was half a step behind you most of the way. You’re god-damn captivating.”
I hoped for a blush even though Vs probably weren’t capable of it – my arrogance evidently knew no bounds. Instead she rolled her eyes. “Captivating? I was surviving.”
“Like a boss.” I winked at her and she laughed. My chest filled with air. I grinned from ear to ear. Hell yes.

Varick & Jameson:

”I’d gotten my best friend back. Hundreds of years had passed, a thousand new friends had come and gone and not one of them had held a candle to that man. Yeah, I had a bit of a bro-crush on him. But some people were kindred spirits, plain and simple. We were the best team I’d ever known.”

Bless Jameson for never giving up on Varick and Varick for never giving up on Jameson as well! They definitely have one of the best brotherly bonds I ever read about and I can’t wait to see more of their interactions in book three. Well, at least I really hope there will be more! I need to see their friendship unfold and I’m sure Caroline will do me the favour, won’t you? *lol*

My conclusion:

I loved “Fresh From The Grave”! Just like the first book this one was a fast paced, bloody and very intriguing read! Those 451 pages read like they were nothing and I basically flew through this book! So much action, banter, plotting and even more bloodthirsty V’s! If you like your vampires without conscience and are interested in the idea of humans being the true evil, this will be a perfect read for you! Highly recommended! ;-)

I hate Helsings! And their scientists! And their friends! And their businesses partners!
Seriously, how many cold-blooded sadists can you have gathered in a small island???

Anyway, let’s talk about “Fresh from the Grave” in details:

Well, Book 2 in the series is as much fast-paced as Book 1 (maybe slightly more).

This is the book where werewolves are entering the scene.

Vampires existed… now Werewolves too? After what I’d witnessed in the games, I was starting to think nothing could surprise me anymore.

This is the book where Selena has not learned her lesson.

Wait a second.” His eyes grew dark, holding a dangerous threat in them. “You are going back for him?”

This is the book where the V games are upgraded.

I blew out a puff of air. I could practically smell the money spent on the place. It stank of bank notes and fresh blood.

This is the book where people will not be exactly the same.

I ran my tongue across my canines, slitting it open – a habit I was unwillingly forming which was starting to frustrate me.

And this is the book where best friends will meet again.

“How are you alive?” I asked over the loud music.

So, this was certainly a fun read. Very entertaining with an excess amount of angst and violence. Honestly there were times that I needed a break to catch my breath.

The multiple points of view were the only thing that I did not enjoy. I would like a book more focused on the Selena and Varick. Unfortunately they didn’t have much interaction in this book (at least not as much as I was hoping). If this was book 2 from a series of 10 books I wouldn’t mind. But this is a trilogy and the world keeps expanding and new relationships have been started.

Thus, I really hope Selena and Varick’s relationship will not be wrapped up rapidly and rushed in book 3.

(I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review)

descriptionWowza I am LOVING this series so far. This one was just as good as book one and now I might hunt down this author "MISERY" style and force her to give me book three right away (lol). Book two starts right where we left off in the previous book. Serena has escaped but is now stranded in the middle of the North Sea. Help finds her in the form of the mysterious Ulvic and she is taken to his island where together with his werewolves they hatch a plan to save Varick and Jameson. Alas, things don't work out too well and everyone finds themselves on a different island competing in a new and even more twisted and deadly version of the V Games. On the Isle of Lidelse we meet some new players and reconnect with some old ones. Games are played. Alliances are struck. Enemies become friends. Is it enough to bring the Helsings down? Well, I guess you must read for yourself and find out!

description

So deets...I found this one to be just as fantastically well written as book one. The pace was excellent. The plot was engaging and kept me turning the pages. We also get quite a few different POVs this time around. Sometimes this can be distracting, but it worked very well in this case. The focus of this one shifts a bit from Varick to Jameson, Ulvic, and the wolves. I didn't mind this because Jameson is such a likable character. He is the lighthearted comic to Varick's brooding vampire. We also meet some new characters that keep adding new layers to this ever developing paranormal world. Again, as this is YA the romance is pretty tame. Some kisses and that is about it but love seems to be in the air for some other characters (or maybe that is just the romance reader in me hoping for a couple other pair ups). I will admit that I was frustrated at times because I was tiring of the Helsings always having the upper hand. But the author threw me a bone at the end thankfully. Last, we again end this one on a cliffhanger and what a cliffy it was. So yea, loved this one and can't wait for book three. Two HUGE thumbs up from yours truly.description

Full Review on my blog!

*a copy was provided by the author*

AHHHHMAZINGGGGG!

After reading and LOVING the first book, I absolutely needed to read this! And let me tell you I just DEVOURED this novel!!!
I was hooked from the very first page and was devastated when I finished it and now I’m desperately waiting for the next book!! I NEED IT NOW! LIKE right NOW~ haha *cries* I wish I had a time traveler thingy so I could just hop into the future to read the next book! Gahhh!

Sooo, V Games: Fresh from the Grave, starts off exactly where the first book ended. Selena escaped Raskdød, she's currently in the middle of the North Sea on a yacht, with no fuel, no food or water and only static when she tries to call the coastguard. If someone doesn't rescue her she'll probably die. She's at the point where she would rather be back on Raskdød with the Helsings than on a yacht in the middle of no where...  Sure enough, a boat sails up with a man named Ulvic, who comes to her aid, and he knows exactly who she is and while Selena doesn’t know if she can really trust him but she doesn't have much of a choice since staying on the yacht means death so, she takes her chance with him. Ulvic actually has his own island Skorpa, which he takes Selena to. Here she meets Ulvic's werewolves, Reason and Mekiah! I thought the werewolves were a nice addition! I know werewolves were in the first book, but they didn't really have a role until now.

Selena has a crazy plan to save Varick, she and Ulvic go all the way back to Raskdød. Which in my opinion was a bad idea, I would never, ever go back there :c ... Selena finds herself competing in the games once again, and while this time she has an idea of what to expect, she finds that the Helsings have raised the stakes with a whole new version of the games, on a whole new island, the Isle of Lidelse! Also, this time it’s HUGE, luxury hotel, strip club, casino, spa even the V Experience where you can actually kill vampires plus of course the games themselves. And let me tell you, IT IS BRUTAL! I thought the games in Book 1 were bad, these are so, sooo much worse!

This is novel two; so I definitely don't want to ruin or spoil anything... Mhmm, maybe I kinda did spoil a few things buuuut, I mean, its soo hard for me to not tell you everything!! Oh and the cliffhanger; WoWW, WOOW, WOW! There were many things in this novel took that I was definitely not expecting. I absolutely love this world the author created. I love every aspect of this series; it's entertaining, action-packed, fast-paced, adrenaline pumping, intense and super twisted.

I cannot wait until the next novel is released. I highly recommend this series!!

Having really enjoyed the previous book (yes you need to read that first) I was excited about starting this one and I have to say I loved it. I was completely hooked from the first page to the last and gutted when it ended and now I’m left desperately waiting for the third and final one.

This picks up where the previous book left off.
Selena has escaped from Raskdød but when the book opens she’s in the middle of the North Sea, with no fuel, no food and only static when she tries to call the coastguard. Unless someone comes by soon she’s going to die, she’d even settle on it being the Helsings at this point.
A boat sails up with a single man on board, a man who knows exactly who she is and while Selena doesn’t know if she can trust him she has no choice since staying on the yacht means certain death so she takes a chance and leaves with Ulvic on his catamaran.
Meanwhile Varick and Jameson are being tortured by Ignus who is also busy making more V’s to replace the ones they lost.

I thought the last games were bad and they were but these are worse, much worse. It’s a whole new game on a whole new island the Isle of Lidelse and this time it’s huge, luxury hotel, casino, strip club, hot springs spa even the V Experience where you can actually kill vampires plus of course the games themselves.

Selena finds herself competing again and while this time she has an idea of what to expect she finds the Helsings have raised the stakes and it’s brutal.

I enjoyed this book so much I’m giving 5* I very rarely give this rating but I loved this book so much it seemed unfair to give less.

I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the author.

"Didn't you realize we're in hell?"

'Fresh From The Grave' starts off where the first book ended. Selena Grey has escaped and is in the middle of the North Sea freedom awaiting her. But Selena feels torn between her head and her heart. Meanwhile, the games are about to start again but more terrifying and bloody than before. Will Selena survive 'The V Games' this time around or will death be ready for her?

Book 2 in the V-Games was a fast paced, energy filled ride that had me absorbed.

Found myself getting lost in the pages of this book, keeping my fingers crossed that Selena and Varick would make it – survive they do, for now, but the ride isn’t an easy one, it’s filled with blood, fear and pain, and again the events of this book and the cliffhanger make it clear that more trouble is on the way.

Also, charming werewolf Jameson and resilient, newly turned vampire were fab additions to this book, as secondary characters they added another layer rather than feeling like dead weight.

I’m still waiting for Mercy to get what she deserves – please let it happen!

Holy cliffhanger

Omg I cannot wait to get to the next book, this one ended on quite a cliffhanger. I thing a lot of answers are to come about Selena. Like the first two books this one didn’t disappoint. The characters are perfect, all very different, very likable, except of course those rotten villains. The villains I think are going to come full force after our heroes. I’m off to start the next book, this one was excellent though just like the first two. So far I’d definitely recommend this series.

“Welcome to the V Games, Selena Grey. You have been selected to compete in a week long event run by the esteemed Helsing family where you will have the chance to eradicate your prison sentence for good. Wouldn't you like to be a free woman again? To return home to your family and have all the mistakes of your past forgotten?”

Welcome to the V Games, again! And may the odds be ever in your favor, again! Because guess what, Selena is back in the games. The prize this time? Love. Freedom. Revenge.

》》The Plot《《

“Welcome to the Isle of Lidelse!” Abraham cried, followed by a raucous of cheering. “My son, Ignus, has been developing this new island for many years and it's finally time to present to you the brand new V Games!”

Even though I found the beginning a bit boring (I get it, it was written to give us a background and prepare us for everything else), as soon as the new games started, I forgot how to breath. Because this time every damn thing is 10 times more difficult, 10 times more brutal, 10 times darker. And 10 time more entrancing.

”Let the games begin!” Thames cackled.

Determined to rescue Varick, Selena agrees to return to the games, assuring she has some outside help: Ulvic Hund and his werewolves. New characters, bloody battles, unimaginable trials and the spark of rebellion will make this book addictive as you witness everything going to hell and back. The POVs are split between Selena and Varick, with a few chapters from Cass, Jameson, Ulvic and Mercy Helsing as well. And the ending? A damn cliffhanger. (what a surprise, right?

》》Characters and Relationships《《

♦️Selena

“You don't belong here.”
“No one belongs here. I killed a girl-”
“An accident,” she said immediately. “It ain't the same as killin' with intention. Everyone here knows what you are.”
“And what's that?”
“You're hope.”

For starters, I like her more in this book. She's more determined and she definitely shows some character growth. Even more interesting though, it's the way all the others seem to view her and I must confess I'm really intrigued by what her fate will be.

♦️Varick

"I was at breaking point, and as the last of my energy sapped from my body, healing the torturous wounds on my hands, I lost myself. My spark of humanity died. I felt it flicker out like a breath on a candle. Gone. Just like that.
Darkness rushed in. Too quickly for me to do anything to try and stop it.
The strength inside me wilted and a monster grew rapidly in its place like a weed."

In this book he goes through a lot. We get to see him as a monster, a person willing to do anything for his obsession, a fighter, a friend and a man in love. We get more insights into his past and he becomes more complex. The only thing I can say about him is that there wasn't a moment when he wasn’t strong or dangerous and I rather like that. Morally grey? Yes, definitely. Lovable? Too damn right.

♦️Selena and Varick

"Three things occurred to me at once.
I would never understand the way Selena saw me.
I was never going to stop craving her.
And so long as she was nearby, I would always be too weak to stay away."

Their relationship definitely took a step in the right direction and I loved to see how this has evolved. They went from enemies to allies and now to utter devotion. They are protective and possessive over one another, sweet and dangerous at the same time. And when they finally let their walls down? My heart melted. Take a peak:

“Because even though there's a demon inside you, you meet it on the battlefield every day. I love you in all the spaces that you're not a monster, and I forgive you for all the places that you are.”

I mean... Go, Selena!!! Teach Shakespeare how it's done. Not that Varick was faring too bad himself:

“You remind me of the sea...the endless storm in your eyes, the flush of sunsets in your cheeks. I see a red dawn in your lips, where I once would have set my eye and sailed into its promised light. You are all the things I loved in life, embodied. And after what I've done, I fear losing you will bring about my death all over again.”

Can you not instantly ship these two? I couldn’t.

♦️Jameson Fairfax

“And what was he like? Charming? Funny? Roguishly handsome?” My grin broadened. “Oh wait, that's your future boyfriend.”

I swear he's like a ray of sunshine. Always optimistic, always cracking a joke. The Alpha Werewolf, hot and definitely used to play with hearts and yet he doesn't seem exactly the usual scoundrel. Who am I kidding... I totally love him and his easy way. And his light moods and positivity.

♦️Varick and Jameson

“Varick, you look like shit,” Jameson said with a dark grin.
“At least I have clothes on,” I growled, managing a weak, mocking smile in return.

Talking about amazing bromance, here comes a dangerous werewolf and a brooding vampire. From the amazing mind that gifted us Orion + Darius (from Zodiac Academy, totally recommend that series), we get a new friendship that seems more of an everythingship.

"Yeah, I had a bit of a bro-crush on him. But some people were kindred spirits, plain and simple. We were the best team I'd ever known. And after he'd been turned into a V and disappeared, I knew I had to find him. Somehow. Which meant I spent the remainder of my human life trying to follow him into immortality."

We don't get a lot of moments with these two, but they are definitely lovely and I can't wait to see more of them.

♦️Cass and Jameson

“I'm still cute without fur, right?”
“What?” I said breathlessly (though I had no idea when I'd actually taken my last breath).
He gestured to his bare torso, looking for approval.
“Did that collar do something to your head?”
Why was he acting so casual?
“Just trying to lighten the mood, firefly.”

I ship them. I totally ship them. I want them to happen. Like. Right. Now. Cass is soooooo adorable and yet utterly devastated by the entire turn her life took and Jameson is just the right Ying for her Yang.

“You got a boyfriend?” Jameson asked, raising his brows.
“What kind of question is that?”
“You're hot...I'm hot. Seemed like an obvious one.”
“What part of 'we're prisoners' do you not get? Have you lost a screw or something?”
“Nope. All my nuts and bolts are definitely intact.” He winked and I glowered at him. “So, have you?”
“If you haven't already noticed, I'm a blood-sucking Vampire.”
“But you are female.”
“That's your standard is it? Female?”

There's not exactly a lot of warmth there, but the conditions weren't at their highest. But the banter and the teasing? Priceless.

♦️Ulvic Hund and Ignus Van Helsing

"We were two opposing forces, always had been, but the connection between us was palpable. The kind of passion that burned so bright, the only way it could end was in all-out destruction."

That relationship buzzed me. I could have loved it: it had potential. But my hatred for Ignus stood in the way of ever wishing any sort of happiness for him. If there's one character that does not deserve a redemption arc, it's probably him.

"And Ignus Helsing was Frankenstein, having stitched me together, bringing me back to life as a twisted version of myself."

He's sick and twisted in all the wrong ways and there simply wasn't a single moment where I could muster any sort of warm feelings towards him.
Ulvic, on the other hand, has a good heart. But I feel like he needs a lot of character growth, as he's more often rather soft and behaving kind of cowardly.

♦️ Thames, Twyla and Veta

“I think you need to be some level of messed up to get here.” I raised my hands, gesturing to the island in general.
“True.” Thames gazed up at the storm clouds and a smile curled up her lips. “Hell is empty and all the devils are here,” she breathed. “Shakespeare.”

As far as side characters go, these three girls are amazing. I loved them and I really like the way they had some spark, something to make them remarkable. I liked Sakura and Kite in the first games, but these girls are definitely better portrayed.

♦️ Mercy Van Helsing

I don't hate her any less than I did before. I honestly don't feel much of anything towards her. Maybe just a bit of pitty for the way she's been raised, but she definitely doesn't show any spine, nor any sort of willingness to change her life. But maybe that will change.

"Man may have discovered fire, but women discovered how to play with it."

All in all, I certainly enjoyed this second installment and I found it better written than the first, covering some of the things I thought were lacking in the previous one. I can't wait to start the next one and I definitely still recommend this series to any Hunger Games, vampire and werewolf lover. It's the perfect combination of fantasy and dystopia, with action, romance and amazing characters. For those of you who have read Zodiac Academy, I must add however that there's no spice, but this doesn't diminish in any way the fascination I got for this series.

Gah!!!!! That was awesome!
Why was I offering so much of myself to someone whose past could be traced in footsteps of blood?
That's the big question here! Why Selena? Why would you go back? Well . . . for love of course!

Fresh From the Grave picks up right where book 1 left off, and barely lets the reader take a single breath. I was thrilled with where the author took the plot, which was still jam-packed with horrifying action, Selena's signature defiance, and surprising twists. And just when I started getting cranky with the lack of romance, Selena and Varick are thrown together once again:
"Because even though there's a demon inside you, you meet it on the battlefield every day. I love you in the spaces that you're not a monster, and I forgive you for all the places that you are."
I also loved the expanded points of view in this installment. They really added depth to the story, especially Jameson whose 'voice' brought some comic relief and a lighter mood to this dark tale.

And that cliffhanger? I did NOT see that one coming! It opened a whole new dimension that I can't wait to read about in book 3!

5 easy stars...which is weird because I have mixed feelings. I'll try to explain.

This book starts right where the first leaves off and is pretty slow until around 25% when things finally get exciting. The rest I was flipping kindle pages like mad.

I'm not a huge fan of ya because although I don't HAVE to have steamy scenes every few chapters I do require SOME. The only reason I was able to overlook it was because of the situation they are in. He's a vampire, a slave to the hunters, and she's a contestant in a twisted game where many other girls die horribly each day from vampires.

The romance takes a backseat to all the action and although I still loved it, romance and everything that goes with it is still my favorite type of book. There is still only kisses, 3 or 4 total between the two books and he even says it's inappropriate to be in her room...grrr. 2 books at over 400 pages each, I just need MORE. Give me some steam. Some tension!

I will say the author can write a hell of a book. The setting is detailed in a way that I had no problem picturing the entire thing. I did have some issues such as the piercings, hair dye and makeup. The timing these girls were wearing those things didn't make a lot of sense because they are picked up from prisons. I've never been myself, but this seemed odd?

Anyway I still recommend this to anyone interested in paranormal reads because it's awesome as long as you can stand the slowest burn of all time between the MCs. We are in multiple character's heads so we know what's going on but they aren't even in a scene together until like 70% (wild guess but it's a long way into the book)

Now I need book 3! Like now, please.

5 stars. Paranormal must read.

5++ stars!!

"Didn't you realize we're in hell?" --Eesha

What another amazingly addicting and heart-stopping novel in this series! I was lucky enough to receive a free copy from Caroline to read, and I found myself not wanting to stop or put this novel down (even though my "adult life" made that necessary). Still, I read this book whenever I could find some time and thought about these characters and the impossible scenarios they repeatedly found themselves in constantly.

As promised, I need to update my recipe from the first novel. This wonderful novel is a compelling mixture containing 2 pints of Hunger Games [we have the makings of a Quarter Quell with seasoned players], 3/4 cups of Divergent [Big Brother and a Rebellion], 1 1/2 cups of Twilight [we get werewolves but NO LOVE TRIANGLE], and (perhaps most surprising of all) 3 tablespoons of The Selection [the contestants vying for the approval of the spectators and having their every move analyzed for the pleasure of said viewers].

There is just so much stuff happening in this second book that's going to blow your mind. I don't want to get too much into it because it's best to go into it with no spoilers, but all of the anxiety-inducing action, suspense, forbidden and swoony romance, light and dark humor, badass females, surprising allies, vengeful villains, and relatable and lovable characters that you loved from the first novel is here tenfold. The ending is satisfying in its own right but will definitely leave you breathless and waiting for the next installment. Definitely recommend this entire series, and I cannot wait for the next one!!

On a side note, I was lucky enough to encounter the perfect song that encompasses and embodies Varick's thoughts and emotions so well. I just love when my love of music and novels intersect and intertwine and leave me with a greater love for both. Take a listen:

The world was on fire and no one could save me, but you
It's strange how desire will make foolish people do
No, I'd never dreamed that I'd meet somebody like you
And I'd never dreamed that I'd lose somebody like you

No, I don't wanna fall in love, no
No, I don't wanna fall in love
This world will break your heart
Nobody's falling in love

What a wicked game to play, to make me feel this way
What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you
What a wicked thing to say, you never felt this way
What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you...

--"Wicked Game" by Phillip Phillips

I mean every single word sounds as if it's coming straight from Varick's slow-beating heart. How he hates how Selena is a part of the world of Vs and Hunters and wolves, yet he is helpless to how she makes him feel. One chapter really broke my heart in this novel, the one where . Anyway, listen to the song if you get a chance!

My Varick, the tortured but eternally lovely, green-eyed vampire :)

My Jameson, the always charming, cocky and carefree werewolf :)

Varick and Selena... I really love this picture.....

This book is full of girl power and vampire awesomeness! I’m struggling to offer a review that will communicate why I loved the story so much without spoiling the many surprises along the way.

The bloody, tortured, and completely endearing cast of characters expanded in this story in the best way possible. We got a closer look at the werewolves that helped the contestants during the first book... which reminds me that I need to announce the addition of Jameson the werewolf to my ever growing list of book boyfriends. I’m not sure what I like best about Jameson. Perhaps it’s his loyalty to Varick and his pack, his perpetually positive attitude even in the most terrible of times, or maybe it’s his smoking hot body and his amazing ability to transform from man to werewolf.

Selena is my hero. From the first book her character, strength, beauty and honor were refreshing and uplifting. That same spirit continued and grew in this installment. I slipped through the pages and found myself cheering her on as she rallied against the deplorable conditions.

One of the signs of a truly good book is when it evokes strong emotions from its readers. (I can assure you that this is a phenomenal book!) While I loved the fast paced and dramatic challenges I could.not.stand. Ulvic (the Hunter turned werewolf enthusiast). I’ll be watching the reviews as more people read this book to see what other readers say about him.

I happily offer this honest review and am grateful the author honored me with an early copy. Now the countdown for the next book begins...

I do not volunteer as tribute to participate in these games. Like ever.

Selena had freedom for like 2 milliseconds before she gave it all up. Mostly because she really cares about Varick and wants to save him from the island now. So, if you thought things were going to be better than the previous book... you'd be dead wrong. In Fresh from the Grave the stakes are higher, and the games are deadlier.

I also really want the Helsings to die very painful deaths. Seriously. If it doesn't happen before the series ends, I will probably cry. The experiments, the fighting, and just being themselves really irks me. I just want them dead and everyone safe from these assholes.

Throughout the book, I was consistently on the edge of my seat. Never truly knowing what will be revealed to me next. I was definitely upset about some of things that happened. I also had no idea who to trust when it came down to certain situations. I'm not sure I'm prepared for all the revenge that's coming my way but I'm here for it all.

Oh Em Gee. This book stressed me out so much, and I could not put it down until I got to the end. Who would survive? Would anyone be left behind this time? Would we find out more about the werewolves? So many things were answered, but now I have even more questions. Especially that ending. Couldn't we have had one more chapter to find out who that was?!? The wait for the next book will be long.

There were times I wanted to throttle Selena for jumping right back into that situation, but I'm also so glad she did. Ooh but I just know the consequences of her actions are going to be severe. And there's a small detail from the beginning of the book that seems to have been forgotten that is going to cause some serious trouble if it's not taken care of. The stress is real.

I am so so so excited for the next book. I have no idea where the story will go from here, but I know it's going to be one hell of a ride.

I was so excited to jump into book two in the V Games series. Book 1 left off on a bit of a cliffhanger and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next.

We jump right back in and in this volume we get not only Varick and Selena's perspectives, but some other characters as well! I love that about books like this, because it lets you delve into the minds of characters that in other formats you might only get to watch what they do. I really enjoyed the character Jameson. I feel like he is going to be a fantastic addition to the series and I am excited to see more about him in the next book.

There is so much adventure and drama going on that it's easy to just get lost and not want to put the book down. You find yourself connecting with the characters and rooting for them in spite of all odds. Especially Selena. There are rich backgrounds that you get to see in flashbacks and you learn the inner workings of the main characters, not just what they're going through in the now, but what has brought them to this point in their lives.

There will be another small cliffhanger, so be prepared for that, but you'll definitely want to dive right in the day it comes out if you enjoyed book 1. If you haven't read book 1, what are you waiting for??? It's a paranormal Hunger Games type story that is sure to suck you in.

Just amazing! The first had me messed up but jeez the second tilted me on my axis and imploded my whole world! I wanted to eat every world like it was candy- cause it literally felt like it was my fix. I don’t find too many that I’m super excited about but this series has swept me off my feet.

All of my favorites I am still able to root for- you don’t know how extremely happy that makes me.

Jameson and Varick are hard to decide between- no there’s not a love triangle- who I find more intriguing. They are polar opposites but when together make each other seem whole.

Selena is still a great heroine. She’s strong- not gonna find her whining too often! I can’t wait to see how and why she was destined to be on this path.

If you don’t know who FIREFLY(no spoilers technically) is go read the book! I’m so glad Firefly is in this book. I can finally breathe again. Never been so thankful to an author. My emotions are all over the place. <3 Jamass lol

The games are always interesting and suspenseful. Can’t wait for book 3!

Well this was a great read. It followed on from the first book well. I liked the fact that we learnt about the characters more and the history of the games. I like that Selena isn't the only one that survived a games and actually you isn't anything too special. The new girls brought different layers to the games and I liked the fact that a revolution feels like it's on the cards with the players, creatures all teaming up on the Helsings. I can't wait to read the next one.

First of all... wow what a cliffhanger! I thought mine were bad, but that was mean ;)
However, having started reading this series recently, I am lucky that the next book is already out and now already purchased!
Excellent writing as always and I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment.

I had a bad feeling what this book would be about and I was not wrong. A slice of freedom is all Selena will allow herself. After finding her way off the island, her first thought is returning for Varick and return she does. This time however Varick is not an ally but a rabid V set upon her and other contestants once again in the games. The Helsings in a short amount of time have already performed countless experiments and surgeries on Varick and a few others. There was also a couple shocking reappearances that I never thought would happen.

Most of the book once again follows Selena as she tries to stay alive in a new location and a slew of changed rules. There are quite a few new POVs added in which overall added to the story but also pissed me off because the last person for example I cared about was Mercy. With all the POVs we also get a broader insight into the V and Helsing world. It's disgusting the Helsing's only run the games for money and a livelihood. They've deluded themselves into thinking they are so powerful and yet abuse it like this for sport ruining countless innocent lives. All I can say is we saw one taken down here and I am READY for the rest to go. Looking forward to the last book in this trilogy, I'm hoping their is a HEA possible for the characters!

Same Review Also Posted On My Blog: Dreamy Addictions

Since I finished The V Games, I was looking forward to read this book. I didn’t set any high expectations on it because second books in a trilogy mostly tends to disappoint me but this one turns out to be even better than the first book and I quite enjoyed it. It’s full on entertaining and I really had a great time reading it. There was action, humor, romance, and some unexpected twists. Besides Selena and Varick, we’re introduced to some interesting new characters. The V-games in this book are a bit different than the first one and the Helsing’s has set some new rules to the game. We also have Lycan’s aka werewolves in it which is another thing that I liked about this sequel.

The books starts from where we left off in the first book. Selena escapes the Island of Raskdød with the help of Varick but unfortunately, he can’t come with her and he was left behind. Now, Varick is awaiting for his punishment and he already knows what it’s going to be. After escaping the island, Selena feels bad for leaving Varick at the hands of the ruthless Van Helsings and she wants to save him. When she gets stuck in the middle of the North Sea, her paths cross with someone who wants to help her. Together with unlikely allies, Selena sets on a rescue mission and goes back to the island. When things doesn’t go as planned, she ends up back in the V-games, but this time it’s a brand new game set in a brand new island. This new V Games are even more worse than the last one and Varick might be one of the V’s hunting them. Can Selena Save Varick in time or will she end up dead by his hands.

I loved Selena in this book! After surviving the V Games, She became even more fearless, determined, and tough. I also loved Varick, at the beginning he started off as a bad guy but later he turns into a good guy. He gets tortured for helping Selena escape which he doesn’t regret at all. There is some romance in this book which I really liked. It isn’t the major focus of the book, but I really loved the romance between Varick and Selena. I totally ship them and also the other couple whom I’m not going to name because it’s a spoiler. Jameson, Varick’s old friend is a new surprise and I really enjoyed his character. He’s pretty fun, sexy, and flirty guy who cracks jokes even in life threatening situations. Ignus is kinda sick and sadistic guy who enjoyed torturing Varick and Jameson, and he got what he deserved at the end. Besides some new interesting characters, there are also other characters who makes re-appearance but it’s a bit spoiler-ish to mention them.

The plot was engaging and pretty much entertaining! From the first page, I was hooked to the plot. The story moved in a fast pace and there was never a dull movement throughout. The brand new setting, new games, and new rules made the plot even more interesting to read. The twists in the plot were pretty good and they made the story even more enjoyable for me. The writing style was good and easy to follow. The story was told from multiple POV’s and I’m glad that we get to read the book from different POV’s.

Overall, It was a great sequel and I Ioved it! It wasn’t mindblowingly amazing, but It was pretty much entertaining and action packed enough to enjoy it. I’ll definitely look forward to the finale of this trilogy and I hope it’s even more better.

If I could have given this book 6 stars I would have.
As a disclaimer this book took me a while to read not because of the content but because of my work schedule cutting into my reading time.
Finally I have finished this book and was not disappointed at all. Other than about 3 or 4 typos there was nothing that bothered me in this book. I rarely find myself surprised by twists that authors place in their books as I usually see them coming but this book has a twist at the very end that made my jaw drop and floored me. Now I want to reread it just to see if there were signals I missed. Outstanding effort by Ms. Peckham. She outdid herself on this one. Not only was this a great book but was even better than the first book. I am wondering where the next book will lead and can't wait for its release.

Every time I was expecting some unexpected/shocking turn of events but for me the story only went downhill
Also I cannot stand/get over the unstable friend of h, Cass.
She wanted to kill her cheating boyfriend and ended up ending lives of so many innocent people. And here she is, portrayed as some kind of a decent human being...
OK, this is fantasy but in real life there are so many people who justify men for such acts that I can hardly come to terms with this even in books.
OK, cheating is pretty disgusting but what kind of a psycho would actually act upon their rage??

I received a free copy of this book directly from Ms. Peckham. Thank you Caroline, this is my review.

Oh man, certainly no second book slump in this series. This novel picks up right where the first novel left off; right in the thick of things.

This novel is again the perfect mixture of heart-pumping adventure, always surprising turn of events, kick-ass women, characters pasts being revealed more and more, sexy soulful other-world creatures, and vile villainous characters; oh and revenge.

V Games: Fresh From The Grave is deliciously dark. I devoured this novel in one sitting. And the cliff hangar of this novel; WOW! There were many twists and turns that this novel took that I was definitely not expecting. It's very refreshing to read a novel; where you can't always guess where it's going to take the characters. I absolutely adore this world -- which is strange because it's very dark and deadly. But I love every aspect of this series; it's entertaining, action-packed, fast-paced, adrenaline pumping, intense and super twisted. I was at the end of seat for quite a bit of this story.

This is novel two; so I definitely don't want to ruin or spoil anything for anyone. But I highly recommend this series. The first two novels have been the easiest 5 star ratings for me. The characters are deeply flawed, the games are intense, there is a lot of heart-break but also really bright and happy moments

The writing of this novel is beyond superb. I will honestly read anything by Ms. Peckham because her writing is so phenomenal. I'm actually thinking of re-reading both novels now that I've completed the second. That's how much I enjoy this world, the writing and the characters.

What I really enjoy is Jameson as a main protagonist. I like that his past is quite sorted; and his future is a mystery. He adds a lot of comic relief to this novel. His personality is enamoring; he is able to captivate anyone he encounters. I'm very excited to see what happens with Jameson moving forward and possibly a relationship with Firefly. Also who doesn't love a cocky man who is incredibly sexy and sarcastic. I know I'm all about his bad-boy attitude, because there is so much more to him.

In this novel there is more focus on the Werewolves; and I think it's interesting seeing the torture devises that Ignus creates for these beings. With the Vampires in the first novel; there are so many different levels of Vampires throughout the entire games. From emaciated vampires that can barely be recognizable,to vampires that are getting stronger with each drop of blood, to the most sexy vampire (Varick). And throughout the novel as a reader you see the different types that Selena and the girls fight and encounter. With Ignus focusing on the werewolves we see what it's like for them being thrust into the games. And the torture devises to ensure they are towing the line. It's honestly hard to read at points; because Ms. Caroline does such a wonderful job painting the picture of what is going on.

Oh Varick. Honestly, he is perfectly flawed. He is such a gentleman, with a soul; battling his inner demons. Throughout this novel he is struggling, and that is also hard to see. But I love every chapter he narrates, or is involved in. Varick jumps off the pages of these novels. A deliciously dark and sexy former pirate vampire (Yus Please -- Yummy).

I certainly cannot wait until the next novel to be released -- I will be counting down the days. This world is so scary, horrifying, heart-breaking and beautiful that I need more. And as previously stated that Cliff Hangar -- Whoa! It's definitely going to keep me up thinking about it.

**Warning** This series is highly addictive and will consume your days/nights reading it!!!

Big fan of this series, big fan. And this sequel was everything I hoped it would be!

Gah, I love Selena. I love Varick. After this book, I love Jameson and the comeback characters *no spoilers, but one of my faves returned!!!!* and the new characters we got to meet as well. I loved that even though Selena continued to struggle she still had champions and kept her humanity. It was exciting at ALL times and romantic at others. I cringed, jumped, screamed for joy and in horror and swooned all throughout this sequel. I loved the cliffhanger, it made me hungry for more. I loved the addition of the wolves and the back story life besides the Helsings. So many great things, including some flashbacks from Varick and Jameson. It was just well done for the sometimes iffy sequels. I can't wait, I'm so excited for this series. As I'm also reading Caroline Peckham's other series as well, I just have to say I'm a big fan of Caroline Peckham's writing in general, so always writes really interesting and good books!!!!! Bring me moreeee :)

These books are STRESSFUL! Book 2 is even more complicated and stressful than book 1! But, it's a good stress - I'm really enjoying this series. This one is multiple POV instead of just dual, so we get into the heads of a few more characters. I'm a huge fan of Jameson - I love how his boyish happy charm contrasts so nicely with Varick's grumbly stoicism. Their friendship is really enjoyable and brings another element to the story.

Varick is in this book less, which is a bit of a bummer... but everything that is happening is so fast-paced and action-packed that I got over it. Selena is still an incredibly likable character, and I once again enjoyed all of the secondary characters introduced. My only real issue with this book are Varick's doubts - he feels a little wussy towards the end, emotionally, which is extremely out of character for him. But OTHERWISE, this was a fantastic continuation and I'm dying to see how it all comes together in book 3.

Another awesome story that I couldn't put down. I continue to be amazed by Selena's ability to retain her heart after everything she has been put through. New and old characters are made to fight eachother in a new arena that is bigger and scarier than ever. The whole premise is interesting really. It answers a question about what heroes do when they no longer have to fight. In this scenario the heroes became the villains and we have the monsters turned into victims. Its extremely intense, hearbreaking, and fascinating.
