Waves

Rate this book
Have you ever floated on waves in the ocean? Have you ever stood in a human wave at a baseball game?

Waves are all around us! You can find waves in a field of wheat, in a dangling string, in a slinky, and in flags that are blowing in the breeze. There are even invisible waves! Sunlight and sound move in waves, and cell phones and microwaves use waves to transmit voices and to cook food. You can hear your mom say, “Hello,” on the cell phone because of waves.

Waves is a fun, illustrated introduction to the concept of waves and energy and their presence in our world. In this book, elementary-aged children learn to spot all the different kinds of waves they encounter in daily life. Simple vocabulary, detailed illustrations, short experiments, and a glossary all support exciting learning for kids ages 6 to 9.

Part of a set of four books in a series called Curious Concepts for Kids that tackles different kinds of physical science (waves, forces, energy, and matter), Waves pairs beautiful illustrations with simple observations and explanations. Quick experiments such as floating a ball of paper in a tub of water help readers cross the bridge from conceptual to experiential learning and provide a foundation of knowledge that will prove invaluable as kids progress in their science education.

Pitch perfect for children who love to ask, “why,” about the world around them, Waves satisfies curiosity while encouraging continual student-led learning.

I read this with my eight-year-old and found this to be a lyrical and engaging book about a scientific phenomenon. We enjoyed the poem in the beginning and the suggested activities as we learned about waves. The interesting questions posed throughout and lively illustrations pull readers into the book. The facts about waves were fascinating and written in a very accessible way for young children. With its inquiry-based approach, this is is a great book for science loving kids but also kids who haven't yet discovered a love for scientific concepts. I can't wait to read the other books in the series: "Matter," "Energy," and "Forces" with my child. I believe that if they are written like "Waves," elementary teachers will find these to be great resources for teaching these scientific concepts.

This is an educational, physical science book about WAVES.
I would recommend this book for homeschooling and for science discussions in early elementary school.
It does a good job explaining that waves come from traveling energy, and covers many types of waves, from ocean waves to invisible waves (light waves, radio waves, microwaves, cell phones...)

It includes science experiments that you can try with the kids.

It is not an entertaining book for bedtime stories or "fun" story-time.

Waves by Andi Diehn is a wonderful nonfiction science book for young children about waves. It’s geared to their level full of concrete examples for young kids to understand before moving on to abstract invisible waves such as energy and sound waves. Diehn’s friendly text asks readers questions to get them involved and even has “Try This” experiments to aid their understanding. It covers everything from the waving of your hand to water waves, sound waves, microwaves, and even earthquakes.

The illustrations are also kid-friendly and help the reader understand this sometimes-difficult science concept. This is a perfect book for the classroom and meets NGSS standards. I can’t wait to read it to my kindergartners. I reviewed an arc of this book.

This is the first in a nonfiction picture book series that approaches Physical Science in a fun and engaging way. I love the real-life application the author incorporates in the book--waves while swimming, the waves a cat makes while playing with a string, waves in the crowd at a baseball game, and more. There are a number of STEM activities throughout for hands-on learning. The illustrations are very fun, colorful, and cute. This would definitely be a great book for the classroom.

WAVES (written by Andi Diehn, illustrated by Shululu, published by Nomad Press), is one of four books in a set of Curious Concepts for Kids - the other titles are MATTER, ENERGY and FORCES.

The book begins with a cute poem, giving an overview of the different kinds of waves, and as the book goes on, the author ties the examples together with the overarching theme of how waves work. The pages are sprinkled with “Try this!” boxes that present easy, fun experiments to demonstrate the concepts in the text.

WAVES is a simple, fun intro to physical science - I imagine it would be very useful as a STEM/STEAM text in elementary classrooms or for hoke exploration!

Shululu's vibrant illustrations complement Diehn's text that encourages readers to find waves all around them. A few experiments are included for hands-on learning. This book is sure to pique the interest of any child.

WAVES is a lively and fun introduction to the scientific concept of waves as a form of energy. The illustrations are engaging, and the text includes suggestions for helpful "try this" experiments and demonstrations. The book provides many different angles and examples of the "waves" concept (waves in the ocean, in a puddle, in a field of wheat, in a ballpark crowd . . . ) to explain a fundamental (and not entirely intuitive) idea to young readers. It is part of a series by author Andi Diehn which would probably be quite welcome in the elementary school classroom or library. Not your grandfather's science book! (I reviewed an advance copy.)

I happened to bring the ARC/F & G to my local library the other day (Joseph H. Plumb Memorial Library in Rochester, MA). I shared it with the children's librarian and she gave me permission to quote her here.

"I like that it's geared to ages 5-8. There aren't too many words on a page. I like the "Try This" sections: we could do some of those in the library. I learned something about waves by reading it."~Ms. Lisa

Waves: Physical Science for Kids by Andi Diehn introduces young readers, ages 5-8, to the wonderful world of waves in their multiple forms --
Waves in water, waves in wheat.
Waves at a game: “Stand up! Take a seat!”
Waves in your hair, waves with your hand,
Powerful waves under the land.
Makes wave in a string
then stretch it taut.
Waves are everywhere, whether
We see them or not!
Clear, simple language and colorful illustrations invite youngster to explore wave energy from the powerful waves that surge onto the beach to the invisible waves of light and sound.
Examples are pulled from everyday life and are both entertaining and thought provoking. A pair of Hands-0n experiments and a basic glossary reinforce the content.
A fun introduction to simple science concepts.

Review of the whole series with teaching tools: http://www.unleashingreaders.com/?p=1...

Young children have so many questions about the world and how everything works. Curiousity runs wild in their brains, but more than anything they just want to learn and absorb. This series is a must get for parents, classrooms, and libraries because it addresses many of the questions that kids have.

Each book begins with a poem that introduces the topic then is followed by lyrical text going through scientific information about the topic of the book. Mixed in with the text are “TRY THIS” sidebars with fun experiments for kids to take the text into the real world.

This book is super cool. It is a book all about the different types of waves, ones that you can see and ones that you cannot. It has tasks that the readers can try to prove the things they are saying in the book. They talk about light waves, sound waves, waves in the sea, and more. It talks about earthquakes and the energy that causes them. And it talks about waves to say goodbye. This book is a cute little science lesson for young, curious readers. It answers more questions about waves than I could have thought of.

An engaging introduction to waves. The text begins with: A WAVE is a way of saying, "Hello!"

It then moves on to different ways a child might observe waves: in water, in strings...even in a baseball stadium.

The text makes the connection between energy and waves. It also asks probing quests for each type of wave and provides simple extension activities on the side.

This book is a solid choice for introducing young children to the physics of waves.

Waves: Physical Science for Kids is a non-fiction book introducing young readers to the concept of waves. I enjoyed how it takes a physics concept and makes it easy-to-understand by providing real world examples that kids will get. It has friendly and engaging text, a fun illustration style, and excellent suggested activities. I think this is the kind of learning young kids will love.

Kids will enjoy learning all about different types of waves from the waves in a puddle to the waves in a radio! The “Try This!” activities will be fun for young readers to experiment with. The book began with a wave hello and ended with a wave goodbye, that was a very nice touch.

The fourth book in Diehn's "Picture Book Science" series explores waves. From light waves moving through the air to the wave performed by baseball fans to seismic waves beneath the ground, WAVES explains the energy they all have in common. Activities spread throughout the book will enhance understanding and get kids thinking about all of the waves around them.
