The Fairhaven Chronicles #2

Shimmer: The Revelations of Oriceran

Rate this book
Oriceran is rife with secrets… and you may not want to know the answers.

Thanks to an ancient artifact, Victoria Brie is stuck with dark magic in her blood until the day she dies. And if she’s not careful, that day will come too soon.

There are those who would kill her simply for what she is: a Rhazdon host, master of incredible power. To make matters worse, the madman who murdered her parents is dead-set on slitting her throat, too.

Like hell. Victoria won’t go down without a fight.

But there’s trouble brewing in the shadows of her beloved hometown. In the alleyways and shadows of the charmingly magical Fairhaven, dangerous magic from a bygone era is resurfacing. Worse still, it only reacts to the touch of a single being: Audrey, Victoria’s best friend. It begins to twist Audrey’s mind, urging her to a faraway land the world thought was lost…

…Atlantis.

There are answers in Atlantis, clues that could give Victoria the power to finally destroy the man who killed her parents. But every step she takes toward Atlantis shines light on a world brimming with lies, murder, and deception. If Victoria isn’t careful, she’ll lose Audrey to the mystical city buried beneath an ocean.

Victoria’s used to being hunted… but no one threatens her friend and lives.

This series is an enchanting urban fantasy saga with sarcastic ogres, wise-cracking wizards, and a brutally addictive full-contact sport called Berserk. Your only regret will be not starting it sooner.

WARNING! This story contains cursing because these eighteen-year-olds are honorable rebels. If cursing offends you, you might not like this book.

Shimmer: The Revelations of Oriceran
The Fairhaven Chronicles, Book 2
By: S. M. Boyce, Martha Carr
Narrated by: Brittany Pressley
New developments happen and for the sake of everyone in Fairhaven, the gals must find Atlantis! Fortunately they have a wizard to help them. Unfortunately, this wizard is a big flirt and full of himself. What happens when they get there is not what they expected!
Narration is super good!

Lots of mysteries of our world solved....

Atlantis! Ok, not solved, but one can fantasize....excuse the pun. These chronicles are much more complex and sort of " darker " than the original chronicles or Oriceran, no smack talking trolls though...But I love the fairies. Finding out the truth of Atlantians was disappointing, not the story...our own legends from mythology. What if? Our ancient civilizations described them as mighty, godlike, even intellectually superior; an advanced civilization in every way, even commerce. But, they were NOT like this. I'm disappointed in the Atlantians themselves! Dammit, why are they so petty and selfish? On the other hand, in Earth legend they look like humans, bigger, beautiful but nowhere as beautiful as described here. Love the fact this story could make me feel different emotions, good, bad, disappointed also, happy, and at the General, glad he, well...no spoilers! Read it for yourself! And happy 30th birthday! You know who.😁

The Fairhaven Chronicles continues in this second book, Shimmer, in the series. It is the same light but quite entertaining young adult urban fantasy story as the first book.

Victoria continues her training, Luac continues his evil machinations, and Audrey…. Well maybe there is more to Audrey than meets the eye?

This is a story much to my liking. Victoria develops her character and, of course, her powers. Naturally her relations with various friends (and foes) evolves as well. I have to say that I quite like the grumpy old wizard.

There can be no good urban fantasy story without some good use of all those magical powers flying around of course, and not too surprisingly, Luac and his nefarious plans provides Victoria with ample opportunity to practice her newfound powers. Things are complicated by the fact that Rhazdon hosts are, mostly due to past experience, considered evil and have a tendency to meet a premature end if exposed.

Well, Victoria is not much for following old and dusty traditions. Besides, who can resist a charming young girl carrying a freshly chopped off huge head of a ghastly beast. Okay she was dragging it . . . and she had help. But let’s not get picky now shall we!

I guess I spilled the beans already in my review of Glow when I said that I was already reading book number three in the series so it should come as no surprise to anyone when I say that I quite liked this book. It is a light read leaning towards young adult material just as the previous one but sometimes I find this type of book very enjoyable with their youthful but generally positive adventures.

This second book of the Fairhaven Chronicles, was just as fascinating to read as the first.

Valerie and Audrey have settled into life as they've learned to live there, with Valerie being trained in her magic by Fyrn, plus both girls enjoyed playing Berserk still.

But, despite enjoying having a wonderful home to share with Victoria, Audrey was getting impatient at being stuck doing nothing, while Victoria was busy learning to work with her power.

After finding some artifacts on a market stall, Audrey discovered that she was the only one to get them to react to her, and so she secretly worked with them, determined to have her own power.

Trouble was, Aubrey was being slowly changed by this strangeness and, when her power violently breaks out one day, then she has to go on a journey of discovery.

And this starts a whole new adventure for the girls!

I loved the plotline and, as silly as the girls could be at times, it was also a very powerful story, about finding your own identity - something that most of us go through at times - and realising where you are truly at home.

As usual, the book ended before I was ready for it, so I'm forced (lol), to get on with reading book three of the series, which is: 'Ember'.

I really want to know what happens next, so I'm off now to start reading it, and I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!

Who wants to be a sidekick their whole life? Sometimes a book covers the topic of jealousy from the angle of one character to another. This story is a perfect example of this. That said, it wasn’t particularly good at it.

The characters were bland in thought and actions. Whenever they interacted with one another it was a stereotypical interaction based on character archetype. The dialog between characters was also bland, never venturing out of topic that is immediately relevant to the whole of the plot.

The action scenes were confusing at best. While the first book had promise within this category, or at least I hoped for improvement, it falls flat for describing what is going on. Some parts are able to be visualized, but for the most part it is a jumble.

The best parts of the book come from the narrative. There has been extensive world building, and this book expands upon it. Atlantis is revealed and more than that, a culture that you see in other books within the universe is explored and expanded upon.

Overall, not the best or the worst. Shimmer is a decent read for the Oricean universe and is a welcome addition to the Fairhaven Chronicles.

Fantastic!

I can’t say enough good things about this series. Boyce does an absolutely fantastic job of world building! If you ever thought how wonderful it would be to discover and live in the mythical city of Atlantis, read this book first. Boyce turns it around such that you’ll never want to go back there. And if you were leery of Diesel in the first book, you may change your mind after you get to know him better here. Also, Audrey gets her chance to shine. I’m so glad she did. Now I’m especially anticipating the reading the rest of the books in this series. And, as I said it before in my previous review of Glow, I will say it again, I would love to live in this world!

Okay, so this series is not exactly earth-shattering. It's a nice riff on the formulaic urban fantasy though, and a fun read. Our two teenage protagonists power up and work on their own relationship too while they're at it, while Diesel comes off as not quite the jerk he was in the first book. If you want a fun read for a rainy Sunday afternoon, here you are.

Surprise!!!

Twists, turns, and surprises!

The emotions of our characters are explored in full, and I love that they struggle with things and have to make hard choices. This makes them more relatable and realistic. We see vulnerabilities and tenderness as well as strengths and sarcasm. Another excellent book in the Oriceran Universe.

Different twist

This story ended a lot more different than the story lead on. Just when you thought the characters might head home to deal with Lunk or was it Luak 🤣 then endless battles to get home start. Leaves me wondering were we will journey for the next book.

Jealousy is not a good look

Atlanteans are all about them being superior. Ambers jealousy is growing and comes real apparent in Atlanta. Kind of out there with this story. But then isn't that the point!
