** This book can be read and understood as a standalone, but does contain minor spoilers for Level Me Up, book one in the series. **
Lauren Helms is a romance author her nerdy and flirty contemporary words. Lauren has forever been an avid reader from the beginning. After starting a book review website, that catapulted her fully into the book world, she knew that something was missing. While working for a video game strategy guide publisher, she decided to mix what she knew best--video games and romance. She decided to take the plunge and write her first novel, Level Me Up. Several published novels later, Lauren, with her book bestie, also formed PR company, Forever Write PR, to help other authors promote their books.
Lauren lives in Indianapolis, Indiana sharing her love of books and video games with her own Gamer Boy husband and three little kid nerds who will hopefully grow up to share the love of things that united Lauren and her husband on their own happily ever after.
You can connect with Lauren in the following ways:
Gia is a driven writer/blogger and Simon is a professional gamer. Both of them have amazing circles of friends and we were able to catch a glimpse of their strained relationship in Level Me Up. I immediately closed Level Me Up and opened One More Round. I HAD to know what happened! The strain between them wasn't some sort of misunderstanding. There was a legitimate reason for the tension and I loved being able to watch Simon and Gia try to find their friendship that they once had and take it into more. Simon also stands by her side to help Gia reveal a huge secret she's kept from those closest to her for way too long. Their friendship/relationship was so believable and I could feel the pull between them. I was rooting for them the entire way!
One of the subject lines in here deals with mental illness and anxiety. Ms. Helms does an amazing job portraying both in a realistic manner and giving us some insight into the ways this impacts a person AND the people around them.
I laughed because the characters were sarcastic and witty. I teared up because I was heartsick for the characters. The story was so well written and I can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of the group! (Ruby's book better be next!)
You may remember I listened to the first book in the Gamer Boy series, Level Me Up, last year. I called it a sweet romance, though on the tamer side for New Adult romances. I also said it nicely laid the groundwork for more books in the series, and I was right! As I hoped at the time, this second book focuses on Morgan's friend Gia and Dex's teammate Simon, who just so happen to know each other already. Gia has a secret, which only Simon happens to know, and it's coming for her.
The first quarter of the book was a bit awkward. There was some recapping of the previous book in terms of some of the plot, but not a lot about the characters themselves, so it took me a while to remember who everyone was and what the dynamics were. The blurb of this book says reading the first book isn't necessary, but I think it would help. I'm sure Simon, for a start, was physically described in the first book, but he's only really described in terms of clothing and "manliness" in this one, so I honestly have no idea how to picture him in my head (and I refuse to use the cover model as a guide because he looks far too old for 25).
But almost exactly at the 25% mark on my Kindle, things started getting interesting. The iciness between Gia and Simon started to really melt there, and the heat between them took over. One More Round definitely upped the heat levels from Level Me Up, and the chemistry between these two was actually stronger than the bubblegum romance between Morgan and Dex. That being said, while there were some more interesting sexy scenes in this book, it was never all that graphic. Lauren is one to watch for those of you who like your romances on the cleaner side!
A big worry for me pretty early on was the inclusion of mental health issues. Gia has general anxiety with the occasional panic attacks. This was all good, and actually welcome. I loved how Simon could so easily spot the signs of a panic attack and made an effort to help Gia calm down, even when he was upset. He put her first, and it was heartwarming. But that's not the big mental health thing. Someone else in Gia's past has bipolar disorder, and this person is effectively a villain for a big part of the book, which is really sad. I mean, I know that this does happen, and I understand that mental illnesses are fun for the people suffering or the people around them. I also know how cruel people can be, both with and without mental illnesses. Luckily, there is some resolution to this issue, some sign of things improving in the end, which allowed me to relax on this front while reading.
The writing in this one was a bit stilted, especially with frequently shifting verb tenses. I listened to the audio of the first, so I can't directly compare the two, but it's entirely possible that this is just the author's style and the narration simply smoothed things over for me a bit. Alternatively, I did read an ARC, so maybe this will be ironed out before publication? We'll see. But yeah, I think this is a case of a promising author who is still working on her craft.
Once I got over the first 25%, I was really engaged in this romance. It wasn't too angsty, with friendship and humour and plenty of sexiness to balance out the heavy bits. I look forward to the next book – obviously about Link and Ruby, duh – and seeing Lauren Helms grow as an author!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Level Me Up may have been Dex and Morgan's journey into relationship bliss, but it was the undercurrents that Gia and Si set off that had me wondering. One More Round delves into the history of Simon and Gia. The friendship, heartache and secrets help to unite them, yet ultimately proved the catalyst that drove them apart. Helms has a talent for keeping readers guessing even as she leaves them craving more. Another example of prime reading.
Another wonderful book in this series! Simon and Gia’s relationship has been anything, but smooth over the years. Gia’s life truly has not even been any where close to smooth happily ever after since she was little. Can they find their way back together or is it just not in the stars for them? Definitely recommend this book and can’t wait for the next one!
One More Round is a second chance romance filled with great friendships, laughs and secrets that will keep you reading until they are all revealed.
My favorite part about this entire story was the way that friends treated Simon and Gia! It was so real and I would act the exact same way as them! I mean, of course you are going to give your friends crap when you see that they both have a thing for each other.
Even though Gia made some questionable decision, I understood it! I have two sisters and I know what it's like to live in their shadow and want to be more than just their sister. Gia made her bed and she slept in it so to speak.
Then bring in Simon, the brooding man from the past. I don't know what it is about a man that will sit there and just burn holes in you staring at you that is just so sexy. You just know that even if he is angry that he is really picturing you naked.
Simon when one more round with Gia, sticking his neck out for her when their friends were confused and lost by the situation that only Simon could help her with. He had her back, he became her best friend and protected her by staying by her side during one of the hardest times of her life.
I really made One More Round sound much more angtsy than it is. Yes. There is angst, but is also fun and flirty and I can't wait to read more from Lauren Helms! Her characters are charming and the banter is witty!
After listening “Level Me Up” on audiobook I couldn’t wait to read about Simon and Gia. I am a sucker for second chance romances especially when they are childhood friends as well. I’m happy to report this story didn’t disappoint at all. Simon and Gia run in the same circle but don’t even speak to each other at all after a falling out several years ago. You could cut the tension with a knife and I LOVED it so much! As the story progresses they reach an understanding and that’s when things get interesting. I really loved how Simon was so caring when it came to Gia. Gia suffers from panic attacks and he knew what to do when he saw her in distress. We also find out some secrets when it comes to Gia and I felt so badly for her as well. I couldn’t imagine being in her shoes and only having Simon as her anchor just to have him taken away. Talk about heartbreaking! This is my first time reading this author and i enjoyed this book very much. The story held my attention and the writing was solid. I feel in time Lauren Helms will only get better and better! I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book with Link and Ruby.
“Received a review copy and I voluntarily provided an honest review."
I just want to say that this hit home for me. When I first started reading it I knew it was going to be good. BUT honestly this book was beyond good. It shows you that true love never fails. That even though you think a chapter of your life is over sometimes it isn’t. Reading about Gia And Simon was something I didn’t expect. I need more. I need marriage and babies. Lol.
This story was cute. I’m married to a gamer so I was instantly drawn to this series. The characters are amazing and the story is unique and fresh. I read this story in one sitting. You can’t go wrong with these characters. They are absolutely amazing.
The second book in the Gamer Boy series doesn't disappoint! Simon and Gia have great chemistry and a realistic story that makes you believe in second chances. I can't wait to read her next book!
I loved this book. It made me laugh at the group of friends with their witty comebacks and fun conversations, cry a little over the heartbreak between Gia and Simon and angry at Gia for being so dumb and stupid.
I was also super excited to see glimpses of Dex and Morgans life, who I fell in love with in the first book.
Gaming is soooo not my genre. In fact it's not my life, my generation. That being said, this has little to do with that and more to do with the effects of mental illness on family and their significant others. This is such a well-written love story, a story of endurance and a story of what happens when positive support is not only there, but is taken. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for your reading enjoyment. (Note: I was provided an Advanced Review Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
Gia & Simon get a second chance to rework their relationship and rewrite their past. Just as the first set of hurdles are passed, another huge obstacle looms. Gia will have to decide how much she'll compromise in order to be happy.
This was a fun story, with a group of friends that endeared themselves to me. Though this is the first book I'm reading in the series, I can't wait to read more.
I voluntarily read & reviewed an ARC of this book.
Gia loses her bestfriend because she has to move when they were in highschool! Years later they run into each other he also confessed his feelings to her before she moved will he feel the same? This was a cute 2nd chance romance story!
I have not read #1 in this series but I think I didn't have problems that much in understanding this one. There are many things that were going on in the book, but the parts of the book that I really liked was the way they were written. The romance that is shown in the lead characters is good and interesting.
I liked the way author played with the story and wrote the scenes. I liked the characters of the book. The friends of the lead characters are very good. The way the friends are shown, they were seen very realistic. Not on a single moment, it felt like I was reading a book, in spite of that, I felt that someone is telling me the story.
I really liked the book and I am definitely going to read the first one.
The “Gamer Boy” romance series by Lauren Helms is adorably quirky, nerdy, and unique. ONE MORE ROUND continues the series with its heart-melting characters that will make you laugh and cry. Get ready to “level up” for another original love story by this must read author.
Gia and Simon are heart-wrenching, funny, and warm. I love the entire idea of this series with the Gamers and the friends and romances in their lives. I feel like it's fresh and different from other romance books I read. I love the friendships that are built between the main characters and the secondary characters. I think this 2nd book in the series is even better than the first. Simon is a completely swoon worthy book boyfriend and so not what you expect of a nerdy gamer. Gia is strong and smart and determined - which I want in my female characters.
This is the perfect second chance romance to read as summer begins.
I voluntarily read this book through an Advanced Reader Copy. Gia is a young woman who gets paid for watching TV, of course she writes about the shows, gets to see first and last episodes before everyone else. She and her roomie, Morgan met after she moved to Indy and became best friends through college and now into their working lives in Chicago. She has a secret she never revealed to her friends, as she has a twin with mental problems, but since he was out of the house and in a residential facility he never came up. Morgan is dating a gamer, who has a team that he hangs out with, including a blast from Gia's past named Simon. At 16, when her brother Todd had a psychotic episode in Wisconsin where they were living, she had to leave her best friend Simon with little notice, then he never heard from her again until he walks into Gia and Morgan's apartment. All the friends, thought they just didn't like each other, but...they were each other's first love, but you will have to read the book to see what happens...
Simon has doubts, and Gia has secrets—will they be able to let go of the past that hurt them both or will history repeat itself?
Gia is living the dream with an amazing career and wonderful friends. Her life is on the right track, until a tall, broody blast-from-the-past breezes back into her life, sending her into a tailspin. She never forgot about Simon—her first love—or the way she cut him from her life all those years ago. Now, she doesn’t know what to do.
Simon never forgot the girl next door, or how she broke his heart when she left without even a goodbye. Thankfully, life as a professional gamer keeps his mind off his broken heart. That is, until he suddenly finds himself back in her path. Now he’s pushing her boundaries and testing her limits.
Simon and Gia have to find a way to coexist. They started as friends, and maybe it’s time to go back to the beginning. Only, this time around, being ‘just friends’ doesn’t seem to be enough. Simon has doubts, and Gia has secrets. Will they be able to let go of the past that hurt them both or will history repeat itself?
** This book can be read and understood as a standalone, but does contain minor spoilers for Level Me Up, book one in the series. **
My Thoughts:
The concept of this book may be of interest to a younger audience but not to me as a senior citizen reader.
I neither enjoy gaming or reading about it, but that being said the author did a great deal of research into bipolar disorder which is the mental problem of Gia's twin brother causing her a great many agonizing moments and making her keep to herself.
This second chance at love story may appeal to the younger set. I found the first person dialog annoying as I don't care for any book of any genre written in first person.
All that being said it isn't an unreadable title and I'm sure there are readers among you that would love this book. The basic concept is a good one.
I gave this book 3.5 is 5.0 stars (showing as 4 stars) for storyline and character development and would recommend it for a youthful reader.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book to read for review. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily. This just wasn't my cup of tea.
And I didn't think I could love a gamer boy more than Dex from Book 1....but I'm not sure it gets better than Simon, my new favorite geeky hottie!
This is the first book in a long time that I literally didn't want to stop reading! Hello 2am book hangover.
Simon and Gia were just so cute. Secrets, tension, & angst all lead to some sweet & steamy scenes. Their history and challenges added to my anticipation and need to keep turning pages. There was plenty of time to revisit with the other beloved characters, roommates, best friends, and fellow gamers I knew and loved from Book 1....as well as some new faces & cities.
I can't wait for Book 3!! Fun, easy-reading, believable characters, NA innocence and steam.
"Even with all the years apart, I’ve always been his and he, always mine. This moment, this feeling … the power it all holds, proves that we will always belong together."
There is a depth to this story more than just a romantic interlude. I found it very informative to hear from a sibling's point of view of having to live and to grow up with a troubled sibling having bi-polar disorder. The impacts of any disorder are not just to the person affected by them but also by the immediate family members as well. This story was well written and was great to read. It was good to see such wonderful camaraderie written into a story. This novel's characters overlap into other books by this author. I look forward to reading these novels as well. Enjoyable reading that makes you want to lap up more stories written by this author. Well done! :)
I received an advance review copy of this novel and I am leaving an honest review.
Lauren Helms delivers a sweet and steamy romance that packs an emotional punch. One More Round delves into mental health issues with the adequate seriousness and respect they deserve, giving this second-chance love story depth. I found Simon’s occupation as a professional gamer to be a unique and interesting story element and relevant to today’s culture. Gia and Simon are the epitome of innocent first loves finding one another again, and they made me smile. This is my first time reading Lauren Helms, and I look forward to seeing what she writes next.
ARC provided, but this review was voluntarily and honestly written.
This was my first book by Lauren Helms, and it won't be my last. I absolutely loved it. The relationship between Simon & Gia is a whirlwind of emotions from start to finish. Their love and friendship is truly one to fight for. Through their ups and downs they finally find their way back to each other. This is for sure a must read. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy that I won in a contest of this book, as well as purchased for my library.
Well written story with nice storyline and plot. A second chance novel with a mix of drama, pain, trust, lust, love, passion and emotional ups and downs. It has some twists in it. A sweet and steamy novel with lots in it. About letting the walls down and let the one that fate has chosen for you in. To embrace the future and let go of the past. The characters are likeable and well described. I like it is written in dual POV, which gives the reader both the thoughts and feelings of the main characters. That makes the story even more emotional and captivating. It is engaging and recommendable.
This was the first book written by Lauren Helms that I've read, and I loved it! I received an Arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed Gia's and Simon's story. I was drawn in by their history and how they were working through it. I cried when they split and was so happy to see their HEA. I am now reading the 1st Gamer Boy Novel, with Morgan and Dex, and cannot wait for Ruby's and Link's story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The story of Simon and Gia is fast paced and full of action. Lots of twists, passion and secrets. This is the second book in the Gamer series and can be read as a standalone but it better read after book one. A second chance romance that will take you on an emotional roller coaster. You'll laugh and you'll cry but you'll be brought into the action with Simon, Gia and their friends. I read a reader copy and voluntarily chose to write a review.
Oh how I needed Gia and Simon's story!! I just knew from Level Me Up (book 1) that there was more to their whole background then just being former friends.
Since I first read Level Me Up and was introduced to this professional gaming world, I've been so enthralled by it. Total stereotype but who thinks of gamers (even professional ones) being this complete opposite of the nerd boy who can't talk to girls?? Not accurate but it's always my first impression. So I'm owning it. These gamers are NOT like that at all! They're hot and sweet and flirty.
Gia's story was a rough one and I understand her not wanting to broadcast it. But oh man I can't wait for Ruby and Link!!!
This was my first book by Lauren Helms, but after having her recommended to me over and over, I jumped at the chance to grab a free copy of the audio. I am so glad I did! I really enjoyed this story and the narration.
The characters were all really relatable, and I not only enjoyed the main characters, but I fell for this whole group of friends. I loved the friendships they shared. These extra connections made them even more real and added depth to the story and the main characters.
I love second chance stories...when they are done well. I have to see massive character development to really believe things can make it the second time around. Ms. Helms did a really good job with this. Simon and Gia certainly have a rocky past. The impact of past decisions is heavy for both of them, but I never doubted their connection. From young love that never had a chance to a second try that was impacted by the weight of their past, I really wanted to see them fight for what they had. In the end, I was happy with how they were able to see what they had and take ownership for their own mistakes.
After reading, I definitely want to go back to book one and see Morgan and Dex's story, and I can't wait to go on to book three because Ruby and Link are clearly meant to be!
The narration for this book was so well done. This was my first time listening to Amanda Stribling, but I definitely won't hesitate to listen to her in the future! She brought all the feels with her narration, and did a great job of changing her voice for each of the characters. While I think solo narration can be tough at times, she nailed it.
Loved the gamer aspect; that's what mainly drew me to this book. I haven't read the first book; I think it would've added to the story if I had, but I still really enjoyed this book and didn't feel lost. I would like to definitely check out the first book after reading this one though; what I read in this book about the romance totally won me over.
This book tells the story of Gia and Simon and their second chance at love. Simon's a pro gamer and works with a team in competitions. I think he's a sweetie. Gia is friends and roommates with one of Simon's gamer pals' girlfriend. I wasn't completely sold on her. Simon and Gia have a past that their current group of friends don't know; both haven't been very forth coming to their friends about what happened, but something did go wrong between them because now they barely acknowledge each other. The connection and attraction between them can't be denied though, and they begin to grow closer.
There's lots of sweet moments and I did like the connection between Gia and Simon. Unfortunately, Gia is the main reason for the loss in the rating. She was just too prickly at times, I don't like that every chance she got she chose to withhold information and lie, and I just felt she was too self-involved. It's fine to look out for yourself, but I think it would've been good to see some selfless scenes with her. I never really felt connected to her character. I wanted her to be the one that took that leap to make amends more; more of an effort from her would've been good, so I felt that she truly cared/loved Simon. She's okay, I just didn't get enough of her character to know who she truly is. She has dealt with some difficult things in her past with her family, so I get a bit where she is coming from at times; she just needs to be more honest about her situation. Simon and Gia do have some good steam though and I loved how supportive Simon is of her. Overall, a good romance with interesting story scenarios.
I listened to the audio on Audible. The narrator did a good job. Her voice fit the story well. Good performance.
So I haven’t read/listened to Lauren Helms before. However, this book, One More Round, is the second book in the Gamer Boy series. I really didn’t feel like I needed to read/listen to the first book to get this one. Of course I obviously missed out on the couple in Level Me up and probably even some background on Gia and Simon. Again though, I’m ok with it and don’t feel like I have missed out on anything. So… Gia… I loved Gia! She’s seriously my spirit animal! I love having a story about a blogger, especially one that is so strong and dominant. Simon made me laugh… a lot! I told my husband about Simon and how he’s a professional gamer. I’m pretty sure he’s crazy jealous now and wants to find out what job requirements he needs for that position! Really though, I don’t blame him… why guy wouldn’t dream about that job?
Sorry, I seem to be rambling. I found this book to be fun and upbeat… which explains why I feel so chatty. I love all the friends they surround themselves with… good people and good jobs. They all seem to have fun and “normal” lives. Gia and Simon used to have a close friendship but they now struggle with ripe tension between them. So I know this review makes this story seem super light and fun but there are larger issues hidden in with anxiety and some mental illness problems throughout. Life isn’t perfect. Miss Helms really reminds us of this.
The narrator, Amanda Stribling was pleasant to listen to. She has a great voice and it just really easy to listen to. I really prefer a male and female narrator to speak for a male/female POV but Stibling did pretty good. She obviously doesn’t sound just like a man but she does change her voice and infliction. I really enjoyed the pacing of the story. Good job, I’d listen again!
While I really enjoyed Level Me Up, the first book in this series - it was not near as good as this installment in the series. Also, you do not need to read it to enjoy Gia and Simon's story! This series is kind of interconnected standalones, so while characters can overlap, you can totally start with this book and then go back and read LMU if you want!
Gia and Simon are the epitome of what I love about new adult romance. They are mid-twenties, really still learning how to be in a relationship, but they have some past drama to deal with first. They are figuring out the balance of friends, life, work, dreams and love. They knew each other as kids, and then things happened that set them on a path of not being together. Some people are just meant to meet again, and that happens when Gia is introduced to Dex's gaming friends. Some past hurts come for-front and they have to navigate the hurt and the anger that comes with them to find out if they can be together now, years later.
It's such a well developed story, with well rounded characters. It's written well and doesn't read like a sequel, which was really nice. I also had quite a few quote highlights when I was finished, which for me is a good sign that I liked a book! If you liked Phoebe and Madsen's story (The Break Series by Andrea Johnston), then this book is for you!
