The Mathematical Gambit

Rate this book
Simon Armistead has a lot on his plate. He’s been newly promoted, and he’s got senior wizards and senior spies breathing down his neck, expecting him to prove himself. But most worrying of all are his feelings about another neck entirely – that of his partner at the Home Office, Miss Anastasia Galipp. Who seems to be ignoring him.
Anastasia is almost too busy with her work integrating female agents into the Home Office’s ranks to notice the way her heart stutters when her partner is around. Almost. But when they’re put together on a new case, she’ll have to face the truth.
Before Simon and Anastasia can reconcile their feelings about one another – not to mention that one unforgettable kiss – they’re sent on a mission that threatens not only their loved ones but society itself. Can they solve the mystery plaguing Mayfair? And will they solve the mystery of each other in the bargain?

This story continues the adventures of a pair of professional spies -- if only their income from the profession could support them. Instead, Simon works on his magical studies and Anastasia relies on the patronage of members of the peerage who know about her clandestine role.

The partners reunite to solve another case involving rich young men and missing time. As they investigate, their burgeoning relationship blossoms.

Adorable romance, upper-echelon societal politics, and subtle fantasy in an otherwise familiar historical world? I loved everything about this installment of the Galipp Files, and I can't wait to read more.

Short Sweet Novella 4*
Anastasia is a very managing young woman but luckily the men around her see that as a plus point, which is very unusual for the early C19th. It does however make her a much more interesting character for the reader. In this story she works out whom is enslaving young men with a new magic and gets her HEA. Short and sweet.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

Magical Regency

I did not know if this book was really a novella or it just seemed short because it ended too soon. Anastasia and Simon are a delight and I look forward to more adventures.

Une surprise tres agréable !
J'ai vraiment beaucoup apprécié cette lecture : les personnages sont attachants, intéressants, intelligents, c'est fin, drôle, cute...

Seule déception, je n'avais pas vu qu'il y avait un tome 1...

The evolving relationship between Anastasia and Simon continue as they try to solve a mystery that sees some young male members of the ton drugged, but not harmed. Angry gamblers in a hell and a fire set as a diversion creates a great action scene. It is lovely to read about women who create their own way with intelligence and practical thinking. They are respected by the men around them, even if society has dismissed them.
I’ll be waiting for the next instalment. Perfect for a quick read.
