Riches to Rags

Rate this book
Most girls dream of being princesses, but one princess just wants to be a normal girl. Ella Carina, crown princess of Aelawyn, knows brutality and lies—she’s seen the way her father rules. Princess. Possession. To her father, the words had the same meaning. She was only as valuable as the alliance formed with her betrothal. Her freedom comes from an unlikely an attack on the castle. When the conquering King offers to protect her from the betrothal her father arranged for political gain, she consents. Hiding her within a peasant family is the only way to keep her and her secret safe. In this simpler life, Ella flourishes and catches the eye of the local Blacksmith’s son. For once, she can be herself and make her own choices, but the life of a princess—even one kept secret—was never meant to be easy. Trevor, crown prince of Galder has been searching for Ella, but not because of their betrothal. She is in grave danger from the very people who hid her away. His plan is to show her the truth and help her to safety. Nothing goes as planned. When Trevor finds her, it’s to discover she’s fallen in love with a peasant. Now he has two help her regain her throne… and show her that she belongs with him. Riches to Rags is perfect for anyone who loves epic fantasy, C. J. Redwine and Marissa Meyer. Riches to Rags is a standalone novel, but there are three other fairy tale retellings set in the same world. If you enjoyed Riches to Rags, you may enjoy Savage Beauty (Sleeping Beauty), Unlocked (Rapunzel), and/or Brutal Curse (Beauty and the Beast meets Alice in Wonderland). RONE Award-winning author Casey Bond lives on a rural farm in West Virginia with her husband and their two beautiful daughters. She writes phoenixes – gloriously flawed and morally gray characters that fiercely rise from the ashes of their circumstances.

Worldbuilding is one of her favorite pastimes. She thinks thunderstorms are better than coffee and that watching a meteor shower is the closest thing to magic you might ever see. She’s a firm believer that every amazing book needs a world you want to wrap yourself in, a character you want to win, and a love you would fight for.

I loved this story so freaking much!

Riches to Rags was a really fun read that I wanted to take my time to devour. It was good and had really likable characters. Princess Carina was so freaking awesome that I loved her instantaneously. I felt so bad for because everyone she knew was dead and she was thrown into a new environment which definitely helped her grow and become an overall likable and sort of relatable character. She didn't let her new life or the drastic changes hurt her. No, she learned to adapt to every situation thrown at her. You can't just not cheer for Carina at this point!

Again, I loved this story and I can totally see myself rereading it over and over again whenever I'm having a bad day. I just love retellings of my favorite princesses and this cinderella story was so freaking good.

Princess Carina is whisked away after an attack on her castle leaves everyone she knows dead. Sent to live with a family of peasants, she learns to live off the land and flourishes in her new life. But soon she learns of secrets that will change her life forever and she has to make decisions only a Princess can make. Will her new life be ripped from her? Or will she be able to be both a Princess and a Pauper?

Great story with fantastic characters. In fact, I found that there were a couple storylines embedded within, making it a delight to read. I loved watching Ella (Carina) grow into her new life with ease and later try to figure out how she will be able to keep her new life intact after the secrets that were revealed to her. Bond did such an amazing job with this book that I hated to see it end. It definitely kept my attention throughout with the suspense that lingered at every turn and romance that bloomed at a perfect pace.

With the ending we got, I am hoping we haven’t seen the last of a few of these amazing characters. A reader can hope, right? 5 Stars!

I'm very sad that I didn't enjoy this as much as the only other Casey L. Bond book that I read.
I'm too busy with life to actually form a review for this but thank god I read this as part of a buddyread with my lovely friend Heather and there's a thread that contains most of my thoughts regarding this book.

Gather everything you know about Cinderella into a tight little ball, except for the Glass Slippers tidbit, leave that one aside.

Now go to the window.

Open it.

Rear your arm back and throw that balled up knowledge out through it.

What is left is what this book has in common with Cinderella, and that is by association only!

It was presented as a retelling but honestly has only one little thing in common with the original tale and that by association. Yes, I am fully aware that that it why a retelling is called as such on one part. The other part though dictates that there has to be at least a couple of things that are from the original, or as closely to it as possible, present. One thing only doesn't fill that quota.

I mean come on,

Quota people, quota! Otherwise it is not a retelling. But let's move on.

If you imagine the story as a structure with some solid foundation then I'm sorry to tell you that you would be wrong. This resembled a Dandelion Fluff precariously sitting close to strong winds more than anything else.

It is not that this is complete nonsense - which in part it is, it is more that this story is simply stupid for the larger part. I have been trying to find a way to convey this without spoiling but I can't cause I ain't that smart or invested truth be told.

The closest I can do is this: When you add 2 and 2 you know you will get 4. With this book when you add 2+2 you get 4½ plus a Kingdom that is apparently comprised of only one little village that can be destroyed with a force of 40 people give or take. Did I say I'm not smart? Or invested?

The story tried for terror ➡ ✖ Fail
It tried for emotional investment ➡ ✖ Fail
Tried for flowy, glowy, flowery telling ➡ ✖ Fail
Sense ➡ ✖ Fail
Characters ➡ ✖ Fail
This entire book ➡ ✖ Fail

The characters in this weren't too bad but not good either. Ella is a quiet person (which I liked) but not a smart one and that is by choice (which I didn't like). Her stance towards a couple of things is stupid at the least and appalling at the worst. Asher is ok, I liked him quite a bit. The Farmers were a good bunch, all except Millie who was the token Traitor Cunt.

The romance was Insta but if you can get over that then it was quite lovely and warm and fuzzy. The issue here is that it had the opportunity to not be Insta but didn't take it and it is so blatant it is kind of infuriating.

Yes, you read right. No gagging noises. This is it, I've reached my quota for this kind of romance for the next year, maybe year and a half.

I was really excited about this cause beyond the obvious Issue that this book is, the idea behind it was a good one. Too bad it never turned out on paper.

I read this a while ago and forgot to review it, so I can’t really do it properly now.

I don’t remember reading any other fairy tale romance previously and I’ve quit YA romance a while ago, but for some reason this blurb attracted me.

And, I loved it - in some respects, it was what I expected and wanted, and in others, it surprised me.

A few things about it that I do remember…:

- it’s not a love triangle and there’s no cheating - the heroine knows what she wants (btw, thats something that kind of bothered me about the blurb, it makes you think it’s a triangle - or that something happens to the first hero - but it definitely isn’t, as there’s no interest from the heroine for the prince)

- the heroine turns badass by the end (yay!) - she’s strong, she’s capable, and she’s not a damsel in distress

- the hero was a good guy, and really sweet, too (yay! again)

- I liked the secondary characters and the plot

- I liked that it was longer than average, and frankly, I would’ve loved even more of it!

- and finally, I can’t wait for the next fairy tale from this author (which I believe is coming out soon)

The ending really got me-
I was debating if this was a four star read or a five star read. I settled with four stars only because I questioned the beginning a little bit.

I didn't read the synopsis for this when I got it. I just saw the cover and say it was a retelling and jumped fully in. I am so glad I did.

Fair warning: spoilers

On days like this, the castle served more as a prison than as our home. It was a gilded cage.

Ella's father rules their kingdom harshly. Ella only knows how to stay in her room and to answer when called. So when a neighboring kingdom comes, kills her family, and whisks her away to their land, Ella doesn't know how to feel.

She is given the choice to go through with her betrothal or can be hidden with a peasant family. She chooses the latter. After three years of hiding, she starts to go to the village and live her life in the most simple way. But the prince she once was betrothed to has now found her and warns her against the king that once hid her for her safety.

But could anyone ever truly be ready for war?

Oh after the few books I have read back to back and not in love, this was a breath of fresh air. I loved the story. I loved the characters and growth. I especially loved the ending. Oh, it just feels me with glee. Another rendering of the Cinderella story that I love. Going to have to read the other retellings this author has written.

If you think you’ve heard or read every Cinderella story out there you are wrong...this is a twist you’ve never seen before!

Carnia Ella had her life turned upside down when a neighboring kingdom attacked hers and she lost her parents and her sister and was whisked away. She was placed into a family to stay hidden in case they came looking for her.

Asher is the blacksmiths son who had his heart broken by a royal and no longer trusts anyone. He stays to himself and does his job...that is until Ella catches his eye.

A tear escaped my eye, sliding into my hair. I wasn’t sure I would ever fit in here. I wasn’t sure u I’d ever fit in anywhere. I simply didn’t belong.

Ella was happy and enjoying her life as a farmer! She loved the fulfilling work and she was really enjoying getting to know Asher....until one day when a visitor shows up and changes everything.

Whispering in his ear, “Be safe. Come back to me.”
“I promise. I’m going to find my father, Hayden, and Matthew. We’ll stay together.”

Will Ella get to continue living the life she loves? Or will she get pulled back to the “princess” life? What does that mean for her relationship with Asher? Will she find her HEA? Or will she settle with what’s expected of her?

I absolutely loved this one!! Loved how Casey took the Cinderella story and put her own spin on it!

This was my 1st book by Casey l. Bond...and it was awesome! I absolutely loved this book. I am so ready for next book in the series. This was truly a unique spin on Cinderella (which never was a favorite of mine) until this story! I can't wait for the retelling of Sleeping Beauty next! *insert happy dance*

This book had a great romance, the right amount of angst, suspense, family love, drama and a lot of heart. Bravo and job well done!

I enjoyed this book and felt the story was well thought out. The characters were intriguing and fit well. The story was full of twists and turns. The characters had to battle many problems to get what they wanted. It was one of those books were you couldn't really trust anyone. You thought you knew a character and then something happened and you were proved wrong or you thought you were until later on. A really good book for those that like fairy tales.

I just finished this one and I loved it! This is a re-telling of Cinderella with a few twists!

Ella Carina is known as Princess Carina of Aelawyn. At 14 years old she has lived a brutal and lonely life. When the neighboring kingdom of Tierney attacks and kills everyone in the castle except for her, she is taken back to the land of Tierney and is given to a family. For three years she thrives in the land of Tierney as Ella, the visiting cousin of a farmer. She falls in love with Asher, the son of the local blacksmith.

Just as she thinks she has everything she could ever want, her past comes back with a vengeance. A visiting king and prince (from the kingdom of Galder) recognize her and she learns that not everything is what it seems. The king who has been "protecting" her has had ulterior motives. She is forced to tell her "family" who she really is and she is forced to make some tough decisions, which may destroy her happiness... but could save the lives of the people of Aelawyn.

I loved Trevor's description of Ella: "I've seen people and kingdoms and villages all across the land... But I have never met anyone like you... You are brave when you should be terrified, kind when you should be bitter, humble when you could be prideful, and your spirit, instead of being crushed beneath circumstance, somehow managed to rise above it all and remain joyful..."

I want future stories about Matthew and Trevor. I want to see them get their HEA, too!

Rags to Riches is Bond’s new take on an old favorite, Cinderella. In Rags to Riches we meet a princess locked away in her castle with a ruthless, tyrant king for a father. Her only wish is to be a normal, fun girl with no worries or fears overshadowing her heart. That is until another ruthless king attacks forcing her into peasantry and hiding.

Ella is strong, sweet, innocent and has so much more patience than I ever could have with her evil stepsister Millie. She is everything you remember from the original Cinderella story, but Bond also puts her mark on her by giving Ella the ability to take risks, work hard for her efforts and long for her love, Asher.

Asher Smith… Sigh… this guy is every teen girls fantasy and Bond nails it. His undying love, respect and honor for Ella and her kingdom is every young girl’s dream. Bond had me instantly rooting for these two!

My only recommendation was maybe shortening this novel. Bond definitely gives you a lot of bang for your buck with Rags to Riches. Without giving the plot away, I would have cut this book into a duet first featuring Ella as a Farmer, then later torn between her Kingdom and her love for Asher.

Bond is extremely talented and has lit a new spark of interest with her retelling of my favorite childhood stories. I can’t wait to see what princess she has in store for us next! This YA series is definitely one I will keep coming back for more!

Once upon a time, all was right in the world. All because one girl was brave enough to follow her heart, trading riches to rags. And because a charming young man ignored both to become Prince of her heart.

And the two of them lived happily ever after. -Riches to Rags

I have no words as tears run down my face after reading this magical story.....

Two hours later....

This is for sure the best fairy-tale story I have EVER read this year and it's not your ordinary Cinderella story either.

The characters were incredible. To read about Ella and Her struggles throughout this story made me hang on to every word until the very end. I was just hoping and praying that Ella would get her happily ever after.

The story-line was addicting!! It was so hard to put this book down. I felt as if I left the real world for a few hours just to dive right into this fictional world and I enjoyed every minute of it. I laughed, got angry and down right cried right along with Ella and her story. I applaud Bond for bringing this story to life and making it one of my top five favorites for 2018. There will always be a part of heart within the pages of this book and I know that I will want to come back to the phenomenal world to enjoy for years to come. I highly recommend this read!!

description
Bond puts her own unique touch on the classic Cinderella fairytale with Riches to Rags. From loss, to villains, even glass slippers, we are thrown headfirst into the fascinating world created for us.
Within this story, we are gifted with an incredibly strong female lead. Ella might be young but she is strong, noble, kind, and good. When reading YA, I often find myself rolling my eyes at the main characters and their decisions but I found myself quite impressed by this group. They were wise beyond their years while still remaining youthful to me.

While Ella stood out to me as being the driving force, the story as a whole was so well done. There was so much to enjoy. The action and intrigue was captivating. I felt tense and uneasy about the danger that seemed to always be just under the surface. I was also drawn in by the romantic aspect. Both sweet and angsty at times, I was eager to see how it would all play out. All of this, combined with the complex and endearing characters, I couldn't get enough!!

It seems as though this is the start of a new series and I couldn't be happier. I'm excited to see what she does next!

*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from Lady Amber's*

I'm a total sucker for fairy tale retellings and though this is Cinderella's, this in no way replicates the story you grew up with. It's such a beautiful and original take on a poor princess born of fear and carnage, a young woman who continues to live her hard life with a kind heart and a bravery that isn't expected. I love the village feel, the horrible people with their cruelty, the beautiful people who continued the act of kindness when her deceased loved ones couldn't. Ugh, and this made me cry so much.

The story flow was awesome, going from excitement to terrifying moments to sweet ones. It's a multiple POV but I really loved it because I got a deeper understanding of some of the characters. It's a definite recommend if you love retellings and warring kingdoms and heart-to-heart ever afters.

A different Cinderella story

This book had me torn. 2 great men hold my fascination. I kept waffling between the two. Asher is so strong and handsome. Trevor is a Prince. Both want/love Ella. The way this is told, keeps you turning the pages. If you want a great love story with an HEA please get this book. From a Fan... Pam James.

The summary for the book confused me, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like it or not. Luckily, I ended up really liking it. Sure, the beginning’s a little gory and may not be for everybody, but it gets better. After the first couple scenes, Ella’s world is much happier to read and it’s great to see how loved she is. It was also really fun reading the relationship between her and Asher. I would really recommend this book. Also, I’m surprised by the so little amount of reviews for this book. It’s good and more people should read it!!! Have fun everybody and I hope you all enjoy this book.

I was actually drawn to this book by the pretty cover.

After logging it onto my currently reading shelf, I noticed it was tagged as 'young adult' I have to say first off this wasn't apparent when I started reading. Whilst the book doesn't contact explicit sex or offensive content it was written in a adult way and I didn't find the writing or characters to be juvenile...well exceeding Millicent, but this was obviously done on purpose. And the book could be read by any age group.

The book isn't based on a re-telling of Cinderella as such, but there are definitely similarities between the character and our lead, appropriately named Ella.

All in all a really enjoyable story and I will definitely read the next book in the series.

Story falls short

I really wanted to love this story. The idea of a Cinderella retelling about a princess who wants to be a commoner sounded wonderful. This story didn't do it justice. The characters and plot are inconsistent and it seems like the whole thing could use another round of editing. Ella was the biggest flaw for me. She is written as though she's a wonderful, kind person but she called someone who took their own life a coward for choosing to end their life. She also makes ridiculous decisions like the one made at the end of the book. I hope in the future, the author's books get extra editing because I did think the story was a great idea. But otherwise, I didn't enjoy it.

Fantastic!!! Must read!!

Who doesn't love fairy tales? What I love even more, is when a author, takes a old tale, and put their own spin to it. Casey does a great job on this. A princess living in Hell, until a neighbouring kingdom attacks. The sole survivor, the king hides her in his own kingdom. Now living in a farm, she has everything she was missing with her own family, including finding love with one of the blacksmiths. But her life is about to change, when the man, her father the king, promised her to finds her.

The storytelling was a bit juvenile, the romance(like connecting the characters together in the first place) was underdeveloped and a lot of scenarios were unrealistic. I admit to being pulled in by the high ratings on this book, but for me, it didn't really add up. I probably would have given this a 3 star rating except the ending just didn't do it for me and just wasn't believable for me. But really, not the worst thing I've ever read. I may even rethink and give it three stars if I feel like it doesn't compare to other things I have rated 2 stars. *Shrugs*

I'll post a full review this weekend, but I wanted to give you a quick bite review.
Casey took the old fashioned yet trusty Cinderella story, combined it with decadent plots, a heaping of character depth and a dash of modern girl power to whip up a fresh, appetizing, delectable, rich and scrumptious twist. I devoured this novel in one sitting, and was left craving more! You'll definitely want to read it!
