Book 8 in the Demon Series and the final book, the author has pulled out all the stops to give us a memorable and wonderful ending to an awesome series.
Timmy is the brother of Max Jensen who was murdered at the Starke House, something he and his parents have never lived down, and he lives with that memory every day, struggling with the death of Max.
He finally manages to settle working for a kindly old man who takes junk from peoples houses. He meets a girl and falls for her, but her father sends her away from him, but not before meeting her Grandma who gives him a medallion and the chance to save Max's soul from hell.
This was a brilliant end to this series, I'm quite sad to see it end, it's been a fantastic read, highly recommended reading.
The characters were phenomenal. I loved reading about Tim and the roll he played throughout this series and in this particular story.
The story-line was amazing. The author pulled out all the stops while writing this story and making a memorable happy ending. It's sad that this is the last book, but it has been one heck of a journey and I enjoyed every minute of it. I highly recommend this read.
“All these memories. People’s lives, discarded as if they no longer mattered.”
Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories that test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that she has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years, and has woven the real and imaginary together into stories of the strange and bizarre. The fruits of her labor show!
James’ mastery of the short story is obvious to those readers fortunate to have been introduced to her craft. In a matter a few pages she is able to conjure an atmosphere that challenges the reader’s courage to enter past the initial page, and the manner in which she quickly sketches lifelike characters and draws us into their interactions with the challenges they encounter is masterful.
THE DEMON SERIES of which THE PATH: KEEPER OF THE AMAARAND is the eighth volume demonstrates James’ mastery of the short story. In a brief 61 pages she elevates the suspense for the entire series even more. The entire Demon Series covers centuries; the eighth volume returns to California, 1968.
James’ synopsis covers the story well - ‘When Max Jensen is brutally murdered, on September 9, 1962, Timmy Jensen’s life is changed forever. Timmy adored Max, and his loss was something neither he, nor his parents, could overcome. Shunned and ostracized, as the brother of that murdered teen, Timmy manages to find a job with a kind man by the name of Earl Jackman. Hauling away junk from people’s attics, Timmy meets Jenny Krieger and falls in love. Only Jenny’s father won’t have it, and she is shipped off to boarding school in Europe. But not before he meets Jenny’s grandma and is given a powerful medallion, known as the Amaarand. Told he can use it to rescue his brother Max’s soul from hell, he must now patiently wait for his opportunity. He just didn’t know he’d have to wait until 2012.’
Knowing that the series continues makes the mystery of part 8 a very exciting continuation and growth. E.H. James’ masterful uses of the back and forth time frames for the series adds immeasurably to the suspense, with backgrounds offered in a near random fashion to explain the destinies of her characters. She is a master writer.
Timmy has never let go of the memories of his beloved brother, Max. Every day, he looks back on the past, yearning for the moment when he can reunite with his brother. Shunned in more ways than one, he's done everything possible to live his life. It's hard to do, however, when everyone judges him at every turn. When the chance to rescue his brother's soul presents itself, he jumps at the chance to do so, never once imagining how much his life will change in the blink of an eye.
The Path: Keeper of the Amaarand gives us a glimpse into Timmy's chaotic life. This is a man who is repeatedly haunted by his brother's death. He has to deal with the loss each and every day, while doing his best to pick up the pieces of the broken life he leads.
E. H. has a done a lovely job of further piecing together the chaos and adversity that surrounds Starke and those caught in the web he's created. I enjoyed the fact that small loose ends were tidied in this book, as well as the fact that we were given a broader look into who and what Timmy is. The pain character experiences at every turn is palpable, something many people experience each and every day.
Sometimes, it's hard to know if we'll ever get to see our loved ones once they pass on. Most especially when their passing happens in such a dark and unexpected way. The author allows the reader to experience everything Timmy and the rest of the characters go through in such a way that you find yourself immersed in the story with every turn of the page. I've enjoyed this series immensely.
