The author tries to tackle Mystery Fiction with reasoned ideas by contextualizing it to investigations in a wizarding world, posing a conflict between logic and mystery, Analysis and Magic.
Very sharp is the way in which the main character El-Melloi II is constructed, taking the usual Detective figure, logically superior from the rest of the cast, and reposition it to the bottom of the hierarchy without distorting it at all.
El-Melloi II is a loser in both talent and personal relationships, coming across as destructive and selfish and borderline abusive, and it's why he's competent as a (maybe useless) detective, maniacally studying others to try to bridge a very justified inferiority complex.
Who would've thought that a light novel in the Fate franchise would be a murder mystery? Since magic in this universe doesn't exactly follow a hard system ala Sanderson, the whodunnit and howdunnit would be impossible to guess. That's why our detective, the titular Lord El-Melloi II, previously known as Waver Velvet in Fate/Zero, focuses on the most often ignored question of mystery novels: the whydunnit.
Despite how interesting this may sound, this book is still a derivative work made for fans of the franchise, and I can only recommend it if:
A) You are a hard Fate fan
or
B) You like mystery and you have the events and characters from Fate/Zero fresh in your memory
Pretty good as a follow up to zero but relies on a lot of knowledge of the series, not really a real mystery but I enjoyed the mind games anyway. The reveal with orlocke is pretty good.
