Right Here, Right Now

Accountant and financial advisor Lacey Chamberlain doesn’t consider herself a control freak. She’s merely a planner—orderly, neat, and content in her tidy little life. When a marketing firm moves into the empty office next door, the loud-music-playing, stinky-food-ordering, kickball-in-the-hall staff make Lacey crazy.

Marketing expert Alicia Wright is spontaneous, flies by the seat of her pants, and lives in the moment—all the things Lacey is not. She’s also gorgeous, thoughtful, and seems determined to make Lacey like her.

They say opposites attract, but for how long? And is that really a good idea?

'Netgalley ARC provided by The Publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review'

To those readers who has ever run their hands through a dogs' fur, felt the big sloppy kiss on their cheeks or gazed into the depths of their eyes well they will appreciate this book because one of the leading characters' dog/housepet takes up most(60%) of this story and it showed the remarkable bonding between all the characters. Weird, frustrating and meh! When your protagonist(Lacey) thinks of herself as too needy with a bleak social life, she ends up looking exposed and broken--afterall a flawless main character evokes more eye rolls than admiration. Lacey might even fake a few smiles but i guarantee this book will coax a genuine smile--frown,wince,laugh and grimace out of readers,no overarching strategy for social dominance needed. Its a decent story but not hardly a typical compelling enough of a love or romantic story to get any energy or that much chemistry from. If you are a dog lover then i strongly encourage you to read this book

I’m a fan of Beers, she has been writing great lesfic for over 16 years. I have a lot of respect for her writing career. Unfortunately, this book is not one of my favorites. It’s really right down the middle being just an okay read.

Lacey is an accountant set in her ways. When a new advertising firm moves in next door to her office, they quickly get on her nerves. But as much as she complains, she can’t take her eyes off of the firm’s boss Alicia. Is there a chance at a relationship or are they just too different?

In reading some of the other reviews, it seemed most people didn’t care for Lacey, but liked Alicia. I was actually the opposite. I liked Lacey, but could not get a real read on Alicia. This book is told in first person (Lacey’s POV) so I’m sure that was part of my issue, but I just could not connect with Alicia. I actually liked one of Alicia’s straight co-workers more, and though she was a better match for Lacey. And speaking of coworkers Brandon was a little sh#t and one of the most annoying secondary characters I have read in a while.

One of my main issues with the book is I found it to be boring and repetitive in parts. I have nothing against accountants, but reading about an accountant’s day to day work during tax time, is not what I consider entertaining. I had to force myself not to skim. It was really not until the last 1/3 of the book that I found myself enjoying the read. The ending was a little abrupt and not as settled as I would like, but I still thought it was better than most of the rest of the book.

Beers always writes well and this book is no exception, I just did not care for her choices of subjects. I can’t recommend this, but I won’t say stay away either. Hopefully, her next book will be more what I am used to by Beers.

An ARC was given to me by BSB, for a honest review.

“Right Here, Right Now” is, like many books by Georgia Beers, entertaining and yet left me with the feeling that there was just some spark missing that would have made the book even better. Or, perhaps with all the lesfic tropes included, it just lacked focus.

We have:
- workaholic vs. relationship
- I’m not good enough for this great woman
- I’m not good enough for my father
- lack of communication between the MCs
- friends are overly protective of one of the MCs, to the point of one being an utter jerk
- one of the MCs has something painful in her past
- fear of making a commitment in an uncertain world where love can be taken away from you

There’s probably a few more but those came to mind.

The story itself is kind of a day-in-the-life from tightly-wound accountant Lacey’s POV….over the course of many months. She leads a rather boring life until the vivacious and gorgeous Alicia moves her marketing business, with a team of quirky employees, down the hall from Lacey’s office.

Both MCs are likable, and Lacey and Alicia have lots of day-to-day interactions that lead to flirting, kissing, having sex, having more sex, and having a sneaky relationship (why they don’t tell anyone isn’t really clear). And then one day, one MC decides she just can’t do relationships. Then an event happens, and over several more days they each reevaluate and we get an HEA.

I think as a book “Right Here, Right Now” would have been more boring; there’re just so many repetitious detailed descriptions about meeting with clients, parking the car, etc etc. As an audiobook, the story worked better than I’ve expressed so far. Probably because of the narrator, Paige McKinney. She talks like a drunk walks…very deliberately, slowly and with extremely exaggerated care. Her intonation, combined with very pleasant voices for the characters, really worked well for a book where we spend most of the time in an accountant’s head. I rate “Right Here, Right Now” 3.8*, rounded up to 4* for the narration.

A light lovely read. Got lost in the book and finished it in one sitting. Beers’ book is always a good read - at least for me :) I don’t get to read many books with MC as accountant (where the story is relayed in her POV) and I wanted to get a feel of how we accountants are being viewed/portrayed. The usual stereotype, I must say - dull, mundane, structured creatures. Story started slowly and gets emotional towards the ending which makes me teary. All in all, I throughly enjoyed it!

Honestly I don’t have a lot to say about this one, but if ur looking for a quick read that’s not complicated and it’s just “cute” then go for this one.

Georgia Beers tried her damndest to make accounting look sexy... and it never will be. Ever.

So for the first 50% of the novel Book Club Buddie D. and I were stuck in Lacey's office doing the groundhog version of tax returns and it was getting mighty tedious. There were way too many repeats of Nascar Kyle, too much Mary stuffing her face with food (and never offering anything to Lacey who ate too little anyway), too much noisy interference from the next door office, too much Chinese take-out dinners, too much taxes and waaaay too much of Leo the dog. I know Beers is well known for giving dogs a role in her romance novels, but she really went a bit overboard in this one.

It started to pick up after the 50% mark when the romance kicked in and that at least was very nice. We had our mandatory angst at 80%, followed by drama and making up in the last chapter.

I've read much better from Beers, 13 books in all and all of them 4 and 5 star reads. I had a feeling she had just the thinnest sliver of a story idea and just eeked it out with filler as much as she could. It sadly didn't make Right Here, Right Now into the exciting read I know it could have been.

f/f explicit

Themes: it's basically groundhog day with taxes, kind of a snooze fest. Alicia Wright was one of the only bright spots in this book.

This one is difficult to write as I think Georgia Beers is a fine writer and has written novels that I absolutely adored. Right Here, Right Now is not my favorite of hers. I wanted so much more from this one.

My main issue with this book is the repetitive nature. The main character, Lacey Chamberlain, is an accountant and financial advisor. When the book begins Lacey's in an accountant's busiest time, tax season. So many times, I mean so many, the reader has subjected the length of Lacey's day, how busy she is, random uninteresting client details. I felt like I was Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. It felt clunky and a loop I desperately wanted to jump out of. Break the cycle, stop telling me boring mundane details. S T O P!

What's good about this book is the relationship Lacey develops with her office neighbor, marketing guru Alicia Wright. Alicia is a fantastic character and when her an Lacey are together, it's hot, sexy and absolutely adorable. The only thing is you have to weed through so much to get to those scenes. It is never good when you start skimming, and oh how I forced myself to refrain from skimming.

Not bad but just not a great one either.

I was looking for something light and this was it. The beginning was slow and repetitive but after about 40% it picked up. As an accountant, there were some things that made me laugh out loud. If someone stopped by to whisk me away for 3 hours two weeks before April 15th I would seriously laugh in their face.

I read this in one sitting. Not because it was that good. In fact there were several moments that made me seriously wonder what the author was thinking. The book was funnier than I expected though. I liked Lacey quite a bit. She reminded me a lot of Jolie Garoul in Ambereye. She's like the human version of grumpy cat and there were several moments where I found myself laughing because she's so uptight. I know some readers might find that irritating but I thought it was funny. However she did manage to get on my nerves a few times.

Here's a question, would you ever describe your brother (or sister) as sexy? I cringed so hard when I read how Lacey described Scott. I get that she is a little envious of him but I got uncomfortable every time her insecurities played up and she started pointing out how great he was.

As for Alicia. Her story hits a little close to home and I totally understand why she behaves the way she does. There was a time in my life where I kept everyone at a distance for the same reasons. The one thing I really didn't like about her though was the stuff she lets her staff get away with especially Brandon. They're your employees not your friends from a play group.

The story did drag a bit at some points. There's only so many times I can read about the day to day doings of an accountant. Unfortunately the last 30% of the story was incredibly predictable. The amount of foreshadowing the author did was just too much and I ended up guessing exactly what would happen.

Though not her best work this gets a 3,5* rating.

I quite enjoyed this book. I found the writing quite successfully painted the picture of an uptight, set in her ways Accountant. Which made her seduction by the "live for today" carefree spirit all the more funny and sweet. I thought the chemistry was great and characters were well developed and believable. There were interesting secondary characters that added a lot of depth.

Solid read for me.

I love Georgia Beers stories. This book didn't grab me as much as most, for that reason I give it 3 1/2 stars. I didn't feel the chemistry between the characters, except when they were intimate. They had tension but for most of the book I didn't want them to get together. Thought they make great friends, but not sure they can last as a couple. Liked the side story about sibling rivalry and how they bonded.

Georgia Beers is one of my favorite lesfic authors, so as soon as a new book by her is available I must read it right away. As usual with her novels, the characters are likable and sweet and the romance develops at a nice steady pace, it doesn't feel rushed.

This book made me cry a bit (for me, that’s always a good sign). I liked that it wasn’t that predictable. Sure, we know the typical formula of a romance novel, and this one follows it to a T, but at the same time it surprised me quite a bit. That was refreshing.

I felt the ending was a bit sudden (maybe because I wanted to read more), but overall, I think it was a great story.

And now we wait for her next novel :)

Lacey Chamberlain is an accountant and financial advisor. Stuck in the middle of tax season hell, she manages with long hours and the steady discipline of avoiding change.

So when a marketing and design firm move in next door, complete with loud music, hot food at all hours and football in the corridor, Lacey’s life has to change. It doesn’t help that the owner of the new business is the seriously hot Alicia Wright, who seems to be encouraging Lacey to explore her fun side at every opportunity.

While Alicia is living in the moment, and Lacey is stuck in her habits, will the two of them ever be able to make it work?

This was a really entertaining book. I liked both the main characters. They had good back-stories and appropriate behaviours that made sense for the characters, and for the story. Told in the third person, but from Lacey’s perspective, Beers gave us enough information to give us a sense of her job without ever delving into the detail and risk potentially boring those of us not from an accounting background.

Beers also gave herself room for some of the minor characters to shine, without them ever feeling like they were going to take over the story. I thought they were all good; the brother with a bit of sibling rivalry, Lacey’s parents, her p.a., and Alicia’s staff. However, the character that almost stole the show was the dog. He was a great addition and a charming little plot device throughout.

I knew I’d be in good hands with Georgia Beer, and she didn’t disappoint. This was a delight throughout.

Well honestly I wasn’t expecting the book I just read, there was more than one occasion that the storyline would go down an avenue that was unexpected and it just made it all the more exciting.

Lacey is a hard working, motivated and dedicated accountant. She’s got her life plan and she sticking to it. That is until devil may care, Alicia moves into the office space next door. Her unconventional way of doing things has Lacey a little more than just intrigued.

I thought this would be a nice light romance and it was to a certain extent but it also drew me in and made me stay up through the night to finish it. The angst was written well but not overpoweringly so, just enough for you to have the heart sinking moment of ‘will they make it’ and then you realise, they have to because they are made for each other.

And boy are they made for each other. Opposite’s attract is one thing but Alicia and Lacey are the ying to each others yang. Their polar opposite personalities complement each other and from the moment they meet there is the chemistry that Georgia Beers is known for writing so perfectly. Normally I’m gushing about Georgia Beers writing the best first kiss scenes but in this book, it’s ALL the kisses after the first that got my blood pumping, phew! Hot!

The only thing I would say is that I wasn’t a fan of the repetitiveness of Lacey’s days during her busy tax time period as an accountant. I just found the sections about her accountancy firm and clients dragged a little for me.

All in all, another great book from Georgia Beers. I’m exited about what’s coming next.

I’m a Beers fan, but the last few of her books I’ve read weren’t my favourites, this one isnt perfect, but I liked it more than her other more recent stories. This reminded me of Starting from Scratch in tone.

It’s told from Lacey’s POV and that does present some issues, in that Lacey is an accountant and it’s tax time when the book starts, which does lead to more descriptions of taxation related things than I ever wanted to know.

First person POV also means you don’t get a great handle on the other main character, which happens here, but Alicia is still an interesting character, who breathes life into the story.

I found the romance between the two to be very sweet and charming, which off-set some of the taxation stuff. Alicia’s ‘secret’ wasn’t hard to guess (I thought Lacey should have been able to figure it out herself) and the drama that plays out around it provided some interest and didn’t seem contrived, which the usual ‘issues’ that pop up at the 3/4 mark usually do. I also enjoyed the secondary characters (and because I’m a sucker for dogs, loved Leo).

Not Beers best, but I still enjoyed it. 3.5 stars.

Right here, right now' is the story of Lacey, a control freak accountant who finds peace in the predictability of numbers and Alicia, her new office neighbour whose motto is to live in the moment. As expected, their opposite personalities initially collide but their neighbourly relationship suddenly changes into friendship and the possibility of something more. Will Lacey's control obsession and Alicia's fear of commitment get in their way?

In my opinion, this book could be divided in two: before and after April 15th, the deadline to submit tax returns in America. Written in first person from Lacey's point of view, the first half feels like a chronicle describing the life of an accountant during tax season. For me, it was a bit of a tedious read. I get that the author wanted to convey that it is an extremely busy period for a tax consultant and to show some of Lacey's OCD traits but I think that less could have been more or at least, the plot would have improved if the clients were more interesting. Having said that, in the book's fictional post tax season, the story starts to pick up in pace and interest. Unfortunately, I don't think that both parts are balanced properly as the end seems a bit rushed. Some scenes from Chapter Eleven onwards and Lacey's relationship with her dog show snippets of the talent that the author's fans know and appreciate, but for me it wasn't enough to rate it beyond average.

Overall, an ok read. 3.5 stars.

I’m actually torn between 3 and 4. But since I like this more than her last book I would give this a chance.
Lacey is somewhat described as a boring kind of girl. Literally boring with a KJ vibe. She’s the type of person you don’t want to go with on a long road trip or a party.
But to be fair, the moment she met Alicia, she kind of mellowed down. I guess, with the right person that can be exciting too.
Alicia - she’s everything you want. She’s cool, very easy to be with but deep down she’s really broken.

A lot of great secondary characters. There’s a cute dog named Leo which actually one of the reasons I gave this a 4.

The story is nothing new but there’s a kick.
Sometimes we neglect what we already have. With family we complain how annoying they are or how they tend to put pressure on anything we do. We sometimes forget that there are also other people out there that would do anything to have a family or to have they’re parents still alive or have an annoying sib. With this book you can view both sides which I also appreciate.

Slow burn so be prepared. With the ending, I hope the author added an Epilogue.

Detailed score: 3.25

Reading this book was like wading through quicksand. There’s not anything horribly bad about it...but there was very little compelling me to keep reading either.

Other reviewers have said it - and I totally agree - if only as much time was spent on building the relationship as was spent describing the ins and outs of tax time or Lacey’s relationship with her dog.

None of the plot points thrown up really go anywhere and the minor barrier to love is resolved with one of the most cliched tropes in the book.

It’s fine but there’s much better out there.

Lacey and Alicia are officially my new favourite couple by Georgia Beers. They’re a perfect opposites-attract pairing, with Alicia’s “live in the moment” way of life in total contrast to Lacey’s predictable, rule-following lifestyle. Because Right Here, Right Now is told in the first person from Lacey’s perspective, we learn things when she does and we experience her character growth right alongside her.

Lacey likes order and control until her new neighbors at the office move in. Chaos is how Alicia’s business seems to be to Lacey. Watching Lacey slowly start to relax a little and give in to Alicia is sweet. Lacey however is scared of getting too close to someone. A heart breaking story in parts and so loving too.
I did find the narration a bit slow so I changed the settings and it was fine. I like Paige McKinney and I think she has changed her style over the last few years and is even better.

An honest review thanks to NetGalley. I could not put this book down, it felt like only an hour went by and I was done. It felt so real, the situations, the connection between the two characters. The only thing that prevented this book from becoming a five star out of this world read was Alicia. I loved her but once May hit I was taken by surprise. I didn't think there was enough lead up for me to expect that she might pull away, it was a surprise and not a good one. It sullied the ending and rest of the book for me. But... this book was still an awesome read, and I will be coming back for more later!

Beers used to be a writer whose books I tended to love without reservation. Lately, not so much. I wasn't a fan of her series and even DNFed book 3 (something I never thought would happen with one of her books).

So I picked this up with some trepidation.

But I knew from page one that I would like this a lot and I wasn't disappointed and that had me kind of in a giddy state while reading. While at the same time being hit with all the feels. It sure was a ride.

The only thing that bugged me was the sudden ending. But overall I'm mostly happy that this book hit me right in the gut as much as it did.

Reread 2024: as much as I like Beers, strangely I never reread her stuff except for Starting from Scratch. Well, that changes now, I loaded all the ones I gave 4 and 5 stars to on my e-reader.

I had no recollection of this one at all. Enjoyed it, again was surprised by the sudden ending. I fully expected another chapter to start.

I have to say this one goes up the list of my favs from Georgia Beers, a long with Too close to touch, A little bit of spice and Run to you. I also found myself congratulating Lacey on her patience, because if I had so much noise in the office next to me, I’d probably have a nervous breakdown!!! Of course, having Alicia around helped a lot I guess! 🙂 I was very fond of this book because it starts funny and casual but ends up being so emotional and heart-wrenching. Alícia has had so much hurt and pain in her life, it makes you wonder how can she stay so positive and fun to be around. Her actions made me sad but you have to understand and forgive her because of her life story. I really liked this book, and I would gladly recommend it to anyone, especially now the the holidays are coming. So, grab a couple of tea with rum, and start reading!

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. Georgia Beers is a great author. She injects humor, a good dose of angst, romance, and day to day life in her books. This one is no exception. The subject matter was a little boring here and there (accounting practices) and there was a little too much dog interaction for my taste, but overall a good read with a believable romance.

Hmm I did end up rounding it up to three, with a lot of hesitation.

It's a pretty standard romance between Bitchy and serious / Funny and impulsive
The family, friends, coworkers and dog are there.

I was a bit queazy by the stuck-up-one passiveness when she's blindsided by her BF into a blind date but doesn't clarify to the other party that half her brain is already gone to the neighbour-from-work-gal... Weird.

The personal drama history is well introduced, but way over the top.
The boom at 85% made my heart race a little bit in a good way and earn the 3 star.

The end is pure cheese.

Georgia Beers was the first lesfic author whose books I bought and read one by one after discovering the genre. For a long time I read everything by her but then there were some books that didn't give me the same experience. Right Here, Right Now is right there with her best books, a very enjoyable read with a good buildup and a satisfying ending.
I expected the other character to have issues than the one actually having them but that gave a nice surprise and when I had to stop reading due to a busy work schedule and couldn't go on I kept thinking about the story. Which is a very good sign.
