Heir of Dragons #1

Dragon's Awakening

Rate this book
Kaylee looked at her hands. No, not hands. Claws. She had claws.
“What am I?”
“You’re a freak. An abomination. You never should have existed.”

For Kaylee Richards, starting high school is hard enough. Growing dragon scales and blasting her date with lightning just makes it that much harder. But when the creep pulls a sword on her, what’s a girl to do?

Turns out Kaylee is a dragon-kin, a half dragon/half human with the rare power to summon storms. The problem? She’s attracted the wrong kind of attention: Slayers, an ancient order dedicated to eradicating all dragon-kin. They’re planning something big. Something deadly. And they need Kaylee to do it.

But Kaylee isn’t alone. She has her martial arts-wielding best friend, a bumbling wizard, and his hot, air-headed Protector by her side. Together they’ll try to stop the Slayers before their plans are complete. Or they’ll die trying. But hopefully not.

Ready for a young adult urban fantasy full of magic, wizards, dragon (kins) and romance?

Anyone who has read a few of my reviews on fantasy books will notice one thing – I love dragons. Those who know me in real life know I take this a step further and am more than willing to pretend my bearded dragons are actual mythical creatures and I’m some all-powerful ruler who will one day get revenge on the world. Yes, I live in a fantasy world, yet it shows one thing – I love dragons.

Thus, Dragon’s Awakening appealed to be instantly.

In fact, I went in with quite high expectations. Dragons can do no wrong, so I was sure I would be won over. Plus, the story sounded really interesting. Although I found this to be an enjoyable read, it wasn’t quite all I had been expecting. It was enjoyable, but a part of me had been hoping for something more.

I think the biggest thing for me in relation to the wanting of more, was in regards to the speed of this one. Things felt rather slow to me at times, there were many occasions where I felt like skimming scenes in the hope that things would pick up and things would start to move quicker. It wasn’t that this book was slow throughout, there were just more slow parts than speedy parts. I’m hoping this is a reflection of how this is a first book, and how there was a lot of information being given, and my fingers are crossed things move faster in the future books.

I think another thing that caught me off guard was the age group this book was aimed at. Although this is young adult, I felt as though it was the lower end of young adult. I know there’s a big divide about what quantifies as young adult and whether you can split it up into smaller groups, but I’m a firm believer that even within the bracket of young adult you can break things down. When I do read young adult it tends to be those that are starting to lean towards new adult, my preference of choice, and reading something that felt closer to middle grade and new adult caught me off guard. This, however, is just a reflection of my personal reading preferences.

As a whole, this was a fun start to Sean Fletcher’s Heir of Dragons series, and I’m sure there are plenty of fun things to come in the future of the series.

A y/a fantasy I would say excellently targeted for the teenage reader. The characters are themselves young teens, we have Kaylee the storm Dragon-kin, Edwin the Merlin, Jade the Tamer and Maddox the Protector all linked to one another and working to protect each other against attacks by the slayers and supposedly under the auspices of the Scarsdale Convocation. However teens will always be teens, they are stubborn and very arrogant and they take risks which could endanger their lives and the lives of those around them. I quite enjoyed the book even though I am a much older reader, I particularly liked the humour and the ribbing that went on between the friends and their loyalty to one another even in the face of utmost danger. However I must admit that at times I did find their attitude and disobedience a bit annoying and I really was losing my patience with the lot of them! I am hoping that as they come into their own respective powers and maybe mature a bit more in the following books they will start to consider the consequences to their actions. So let's see how the next book in the series develops! Looking forward to a 2nd fun read in this series.

I liked the writing style of this novel and the world building was exceptional. This was such a cool story. I liked how Kaylee slowly started to manifest her powers and I enjoyed seeing her make new friends. The descriptions were crystal clear making it easy for me to visualize what was taking place.

Some things I didn’t like were:

1) The age of the teens. They were a bit young and very immature. I get that Kaylee, Jade, Edwin and Maddox were teens but dang...they were incredibly dumb. They kept falling right into the villains traps. EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! It was so frustrating. but I was able to look past it.

2) The adults. It was strange that Kaylee’s parents took the news of her being a dragon-kin so well. They barely batted an eye. While I was happy they found out early on in the story, they were pretty nonexistent throughout 🤷🏽‍♀️ They served no purpose other than to occasionally irritate the kids. With all their secret meetings I expected them to at least know what was going on, instead they were clueless and literally did nothing to help stop the villain. All they did was conveniently arrive on the scene ‘after’ the kids did all the work. It would have been nice if the adults were more engaged in the story.

3) The pace. I wouldn’t say the entire story was slow, it just had more slow bits than action bits. I’m guessing that happened because this is the first book and I’m hoping that future books are a lot more action packed.

That aside, I did enjoy this book. The end scene made up for a lot of peeves and I’m actually looking forward to reading the rest in the series.

Dragon's Awakening - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Kaylee thinks she and her schoolmates - best friend Jade, Maddox and hunky Brendan are just ordinary students and that even home-schooled Edwin is just an everyday geek - how wrong could she be?
After a series of strange events follows her blind date with Brendan (including a barn burning down), her life and that of those close to her will never be the same again! All four youngsters have different forms of magical and protective powers and in Kaylee and Edwin's case must train hard to develop them, for the good of all dragon-kin
- and the oblivious humans they share the town of Scarsdale with.

With Dragon-kin, Merlins,Tamers, Protectors and Slayers in a primaeval battle for the ultimate control of all magic, the teens must learn who to trust, who they can work best with and how to make sure evil will never win.

Sean Fletcher certainly knows how to bring the magic alive in this YA sizzler, that will make fans of fantasy thrillers, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings cry out for more, which is on its way in the next in the Heir of Dragons series, Dragon's Curse. Grab your copy now!

Great read. I feel that teens and young adults would really like this book. The different characters and their abilities were brought to life. It shows what teens do and that they don't always listen to what they are told and if they want to be good at something they have to practice and practice at it. So much action going on you wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen. I received an arc copy for my honest review.

Eh

Overall I think it was a pretty cool story and a good concept. Just definitely wasn't the right age for me. I would have loved this when I was in middle / high school. Overall pretty good characters, pretty normal teenagers running into danger. I liked the concept of the Dragon-kin and Merlins. I won't be continuing to series.

It was a fun book to read in 1 afternoon and evening. I like the people and the setting. Love Edwin and Kaylee. Really like Jade and Maddox. The magic was cool and she is a freaking dragon! So cool! Gonna have to find part 2 to find out what the slayers are up to. So want to know what is up with Edwin... I think he and Kaylee belong together but we will see.

Dragon’s Awakening
I was blessed with a free copy of this book, and I have chosen of my own volition to share this review with you!

Imagine going out on your first date in middle school and discovering that you have supernatural powers…oh and that your date wants to kill you. This is the reality that Kaylee finds herself in. She learns many things about the people around her as the book progresses. Things she never imagined to be true, but they are true. She must first accept that she is truly dragon-kin, and then she must fight to maintain control of her abilities.

Character develop is superb with the characters growing and changing as the book progresses. There are numerous twists within the plot of this tale, but the author holds the story line together in order to weave this masterpiece. This reader cannot wait for the next book in this series to be released.

A slow read. So basically what happens is there is a bunch of teens in danger they try to tell the adults the adults brush you off so they go out to try to fix it themselves (sound like anything). even when they find evidence to the adult still make it like it's nothing and actually seemed to impede all their work. Finally at the end they manage his name today instead of being congratulating they just get in trouble. What!? the teams did with adults word too lazy to even to look into let alone fight and then they get punished the adults only had themselves to blame since they didn't let the freaking finger. and how they actually include the kids in what they were doing if they were doing anything at all they wouldn't have run off and tried to fix it themselves. the only reason I gave us book two stars instead of one is for the sheer fact that involves dragons

I thought this was a romance book so obviously I was disappointed to find it out that not only is it not a romance novel but it is about high school kids. It just felt really immature and I am probably not the intended target, so take my review with a grain of salt. One thing that really got under my skin is the fact that the adults in this book are clueless morons. Seriously. They don't listen to the kids, even when they are presented with evidence. But the kids also annoyed me. They were just too immature for me - their action and thoughts were just annoying. The reason I'm giving this two stars and not one is that I think someone younger than me might really enjoy it. And I didn't hate the book I just really disliked it and was bored reading it lol - which is why I took me couple of days to get through it.

I liked the basic story line of this book but it was hard for me to understand why they would not give the kids more kudos and let them help or at the very least listen to them.

Kaylee Richards' best friend is Jade Azuma and they have been close since they were 6. Jade is also friends with Maddox, but Kaylee hadn't met him till the first day of high school. Maddox is very charming to Kaylee and she feels like she might be falling for him.

Alastair Dumas is head of the Dragon Convocation for Scarsdale and he is the one who decides who does what, and when. His son Edwin is who Kaylee joins to train with, so that her newly discovered powers can be controlled.

Kaylee has already met Brendan Jowkowsky, who initially took her on a date and tried to seduce her. Then when she tried to resist his advances, he turned angry and tried to kill her, she had to make good use of her self defence class training.

Kaylee finds her life changes after her altercation with Brendan, and Brendan is determined to see her life end.

This is a coming of age, young adult, teen fantasy, that involves a group of youngsters working together to save themselves and their families from an organisation that is trying to wipe out all dragon-kin and control all the powers that dragon-kin possess.

It was a fun book to read. I think it was be well liked by its target audience. I am not the target audience, so I found it little too scripted.

"Well I just got told I’m a dragon-kin and nearly died today, so sorry if I’m not in the quiet mood."

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I couldn't decide on 3 or 4 stars, so I've sat on my review for a while (metaphorically speaking) and because I want to read the next book, still, I have decided on a 4.

Kindle Unlmimited, giving it a 5, this time; if book 2 has the 90210 chick crap going on, will definitely drop score, and probably quit reading. Really like the premise of dragon kin and all, but see no reason, even for supposed high schoolers to act like such twits etc.

Kaylee looked at her hands. No, not hands. Claws. She had claws. “What am I?” “You’re a freak.

When Kaylee goes on a date and the guy tries to make a move on her, she accidentally calls on a storm. Then, the guy draws a sword on her and tries to kill her. She gets away alive and attempts to push the disaster date to the back of her mind and have a normal first day of her freshman year. But she quickly learns that nothing will ever be normal for her again.

Kaylee is no ordinary girl. She's actually part dragon and is a rare storm one. Dragon slayers are after her and Kaylee is surprised to discover that her best friend Jade is her protector, also known as a "tamer". Jade introduces her to Maddox, who is a protector and he watches over Edwin because he's a Merlin (a person who does magic). The four of them grow closer and are going to need each other with the slayers trying to capture Kaylee. They want her for something and that's scarier than killing her.

I love the friendship between Jade and Kaylee and the humor it brings to the book. There's a lot of action in this story and I love Edwin's character. I felt bad for him in the beginning, but Kaylee pushes him to be better and the scenes with them together kept me reading. Dragons are a favorite of mine so I wasn't surprised to enjoy this read!

Final Verdict: I would recommend this to fans of magic, dragons, action, secrets, and mystery.

This is the first book I’ve read by Sean Fletcher, but I’m sure it won’t be the last. When Kaylee Richards finds out she is a dragon-kin, she also learns her best friend Jade has changed without her knowing it. Then she meets Edwin, a rather incompetent Merlin, and Edwin’s Protector, Maddox. These four teenagers make a formidable team, which lands them in some dangerous situations. I also like other characters, especially Baba, Kaylee’s trainer, who is a force to be reckoned with. Her unique house and its secret/forbidden room are amazing. I enjoyed this story so much that it was hard to stop reading and I can hardly wait to read the next book in this series. If you like stories with strong characters, magic, suspense, and verbal sparring, this book is for you. I received a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

Dragon's Awakening took me a bit of getting used to since it had been a while since I read a book about 15yos (be them Dragon-kin, Tamers, and so on). Still, it's an interesting world and I liked getting to know Kaylee as well as Jade, Edwin, and Maddox. There's lots of action, training, sneaking around, learning about the Convocation's enemies, getting grounded, and saving the world. You know, all part of a teenager's everyday life.

I liked that the book didn't finish in a cliffhanger, and rather solved its main conflict, while still leaving enough loose threads for the reader to want to continue the rest of the series. Bonus points also for it being a Clean read, so younger teenagers can enjoy it too. Recommended for dragon (shifter) lovers out there (or any other kind of Fantasy lovers), as well as fans of the author. ~ 4 stars.

There was a little too much backstory at the beginning of this book...and then not enough to answer any questions for me to LOVE it. But once I was IN, I was in.
Dragons are my thing. Dragon shifters not usually so much. Dragon-kin? Maybe. I definitely like the premise of this story.
I will say that the Slayers seemed to have inordinately more power than they should have. That wasn’t sufficiently explained, nor was the idea that they had dragon-kin on their team.
But the sequel is on my device, so we’ll see how the author does answering all the questions he raised. The hint of romance was perfect. The by-play between the characters was realistic.
All-in-all, a story teenagers will enjoy reading.

I love, love, love dragons!

A little disappointed that there were no full blown dragons but that aside this was an enjoyable read.

Kaylee discovers she is a dragon-kin and a rare one at that. She has just started high school, just found out what she is and just found out that her best friend knew and is her tamer.

We follow the story of this group of teenagers as they fight to fend off slayers that are trying to end all Dragon-kin and Kaylee is the key. I'm finding the idea of Dragon-kin to be exciting and as usual kids will be kids (even when they think they are not kids) and do as they want getting into bother (but that's what makes a good story).

The characters are well written and I could connect, managing to easily lose myself in the book.

Good but Not My Favorite

This book would be great for teenagers or young adults. I like that it has adventure and magic, and that it's a clean story. I've seen better fantasy, though. I did enjoy the kids, their interactions, and the creative dragon magic. They acted like teenagers. However, there was a lot of clumsy writing. For example, what butler talks in preteen clumsy phrases? He said he did, but he would "pretend like he did not." There was grasping for a descriptive phrase and missing, repeatedly. Sorry, but the color gray is not angry or broiling. I don't like typos, either. At least they mostly didn't detract from the story. This story is mainly complete in itself, but there are broad hints of the plot continuation in the next book of the series.

Not exactly my cup of tea, but a very nicely done YA dragon shifter read
It took me a bit to warm up to the main character, but once she found her gang (Maddox and Edwin mostly, bc Jade was already kinda annoying), the book really picked up for me.
I think it was an interesting approach to a very "done" genre. The language was fresh and witty, the editing was refreshingly tight, the magic was thoughtfully explained. The characters are still very young (literally, just started high school), which I'm guessing gives some room for growth in later instalments of the saga. Overall, a good read and recommended if YA is your thing!

Good Start to the Series

With everything going on and all the action I keep forgetting these kids are so young.

It's the day before Kaylee and Jade's freshman year when Kaylee's world gets rocked. Kaylee has so much to learn in this new world.

The adults in her and her friends' lives keep treating them like the children I keep forgetting they are. The adults don't listen when they should. Kind of like in real life.

This was an interesting read. I'm excited to see what happens next

Girl has dragon dna. She can only partially shift so that’s freaky. She has a tamer which protects her. So dumb. She has a Merlin who does magic alongside her. That’s better. She has a group out to kill her. Understandable. She doesn’t know about any of this until a guy tries to kiss her(?). Then the adults don’t tell them anything. Crazy witch lady trains her. She is super rare dragon shifter. Then the group Scooby doo gangs the ending and the adults all scratch their heads like huh... we missed that.

This is a really great YA fantasy. The world building is really interesting with the concept of Dragon-kin and Merlins being the natural magic users. The different powers and ability to shift is really creative. I love Kaylee's character and how she deals with the changes in her life. She wins for having one of the worst first dates ever. Rounding out her group are Jade, Maddox, and Edwin. They are all great individuals and the dynamic among them is quite entertaining. Excited to read the next installment.

Kaylee Richard's thought going on a date with the most popular guy in school was the only thing she had to be nervous about. What could possibly go wrong? Well growing claws and summoning a storm that almost killed Mr. Popular was definitely not part of the plan. Dragon-kin are half human and half dragon and Kaylee is one of the rare storm dragons. Thrown into the life of secret organizations good and bad, of dragons, wizards, and slayers freshman year is going to be one to remember.

I really enjoyed this book I read it in a day lol! I like the dragon-kin history and magical system. It's a very cute fantasy romance. It was a very quick fun read and I would recommend if you love a cute fantasy.

Dragon-Kin . . .

Kaylee Richards finds out that she is a dragon-kin, a half dragon/half human, having the power to summon storms, as in an ability to zap your tormenter-date Brendan when he gets too “frisky”. She also finds that her best friend, Jade, is her tamer! Just starting high school, that’s a shocking piece of information. A few of the teens will come together to protect against slayers, drawn by the magic, trying to kill off the dragon-kin. Kaylee is a key player here, but does she even know that yet? Something big is coming their way. Are they ready for it?
