Ah, much better. This story is at its best when it's about relationships evolving through care and food. I did get a chuckle out of the "Rui Wants to Be a MILF" chapter even though I usually find her annoying, so well done, book!
The relentless appetite, no, not that one, the regular one, of a teenage boy marches on and Shuko continues to be up to the task. This time out, Yamato’s entire family gets involved and the spectre of age gap romance is raised, but I guarantee it’s not from the place you’re expecting.
Minus a couple of wobbles, this might be the most perfect distillation of this series we ever see. It’s doing all the things it tends to do very well - the comedy, the heart, the cooking as an expression of affection - and a little bit extra besides.
The first section is the introduction of Yamato’s highly precocious sister and, like many before her, she is easily swept up in Shuko’s love of feeding. The way these two swiftly bond is quite sweet, plus it immediately deflates the ‘no parent would ever allow this’ angle by mentioning that Yamato’s mother is very aware of the whole situation.
This segues into a thoughtful gift that leads to a powerhouse of comedy expressions as Shuko is forced to tackle a cooking project that’s well above her usual efforts. There’s a very sweet acknowledgment at the end of how feeding Yamato has really helped to heal Shuko and bring her back to the real world as a lovely flourish at the end.
Heck, there’s even a good chapter featuring Rui, who I didn’t love in her first appearance, as a random dream has her thinking that Yamato prefers older women and has her on the attack to save him from that ‘smut novel Jezebel’. Minus an obvious ‘attack by creep’ moment, this one is a gem.
We learn a lot about Shuko’s former husband as well, both from flashbacks to her college days as well as a story about the nature of family recipes versus ‘the real thing’.
There are still flashes of the inappropriate romance around, such as a workout session that plays off the usual ‘I have gained weight, oh noes’ trope for some cute moments and the appearance of the appropriately named Yuri, a friend of Shuko’s who turns out to be a very kissy drunk.
This chapter starts off really annoying, but has a lot of good insight into Shuko and addresses the elephant in the room a ton while also not quite doing that and egging it on a bit instead. There’s no doubt that this story knows what you’re thinking and is happy to have fun with it.
It’s a great read full of warm fuzzies and surprising directness on certain topics. I’m not one for flashbacks, but the things we learn about Shuko’s previous relationship are really interesting and completely not what I expected (the foreshadowing earlier in the book with his drawing pays off nicely).
4.5 stars - this book is warm and joyful and shows the lives of two people who are making things better by being there for one another, in whatever capacity that winds up to be. I always love these takes on shared meals and this is becoming one of my favourites.
We were doing so, so well...until Rui is accosted by an older man cuz she dressed up. Because of course that would happen.
But then we moved on to better things...until Shohei (and readers) were given an over-shaded tit shot while Shohei was helping Shuko exercise. Because of course that would happen.
And then we were back on track...until Yuri non-consensually kisses Shuko. Because OF COURSE THAT WOULD HAPPEN.
Okay look, the whole volume wasn't bad. I did get my promised past Shuko and her husband flashback, and Sakura is such a fun and sweet child, meeting her was a delight. The art had some not so great moments, but for the most part is was on par for what the series has been up til this point. I just would have really, really, REALLY liked it if the aforementioned incidents had NOT HAPPENED. Because it kind of brought down the rest of the volume, though I wouldn't say the volume was unsalvageable. But dear God Satomi U, please make better decisions in the future, I'm BEGGING you.
This continues to be one of the cutest most wholesome things I’ve ever read.
They are sticking with the narrative that Yamato reminds Yakumo of her late husband which has me still thinking that this is a romance, which I hate that I love because of the age gap. The addition of the little sister was cute and endeared me but even she sees that her brother must have a thing for her.
-Yakumo making that steak after stressing about it holy shit my mouth waters reading this they looked like they were transcending eating that meat. I would sell my left tit to taste how her cooking must taste -Yamato passing out on her from exhaustion as soon as she opens the door was so soft and tender I love how domestic they are together I just wish he were older. -Her deciding that she wants to start working out and we get all the cleavage shots or her had my mouth watering for other reasons -WE GET A LADY KISS SCENE IN THIS ONE. I adore Yuri.
Overall- this is a series close to my heart. Excited to continue
This is my favorite volume so far. Yamata's sister is a fun character with a good introduction and Yuri has good chapter with some development. The laughs were solid in this volume and the main story continues to be sweet and heartwarming at times.
This is about Shuko and Yamato, a widow cooking for a high school student living next door. I'm really enjoying this series. This volume had the perfect amount of silly storyline while at the same time pushing the story along. I also like that we finally get a little bit more about Shuko's husband through flashbacks.
Is there something strange about eating stew over rice??
The ambiguity of their relationship is sometimes disturbing. It looks like her previous husband was older (a professor when she was 18) so hopefully she doesn’t end up going in the other direction. I don’t have a problem with age gaps, but they either need to both be of age, or at least closer in age if they’re pushing a romance.

The third installment of this cozy Manga is just as sumptuously decadent as the first two. Any time I am feeling down, I make myself a tasty treat, hop in a bubble bath and pick up this series.
