After ten years Xavier Valdespino has appeared again in Rose's life, only to whisk her away to Spain and blackmail her into, marriage.
It's clear to Rose that Xavier blames her for something she didn't do, and now he's using the intense sexual attraction that still exists between them to take his revenge -- through passion.
Jacqueline Baird was born on the 1st of April at home in a small village Northumbria, England, UK, where she raised. She went to the local village school, and later an all-girls' grammar school where she passed the University of Oxford General Certificate of Education in various subjects. On leaving school she joined the civil service in the then Post Office department.
She met her husband Jim, when she was only eighteen. Eight years later, after working as a hotel receptionist in a five-star hotel in Scotland and traveling abroad for a few years, she came home and married him. They still live in Northumbria and have two grown sons.
Her number one love is writing. She has always been an avid reader, and she had her first success as a writer at the age of eleven, when she won the first prize in the Nature Diary of the Year competition at school. But she always felt a little guilty because her diary was more fiction than fact. Apart from a spell as a hopeful painter in oils, when she actually did have a painting accepted for the Federation of Northern Artists' annual exhibition her real passion was for romance novels. When her sons went to school all day she thought she would try writing one. Jacqueline Baird's been writing for Mills & Boon since 1988, and she still gets a thrill every time a new book is published.
When Jacqueline is not busy writing she likes to spend her time traveling, reading and playing cards. She was a keen sailor until a knee injury ended her sailing days, but she still enjoys swimming in the sea. She visits a gym twice a week now and has made the surprising discovery that she gets some good ideas while doing the mind-numbingly boring exercises on the cycling and weight machines.
H/h met and had a one night stand when heroine was 19. Hero's friend shows up at the flat hero was borrowing and tells heroine that hero is about to be engaged to his sister and that he doesn't want to see her again. Heroine leaves with her heart broken. She has a miscarriage three months later and then goes on to medical school to be a doctor.
Nine years later she sees the hero again at an engagement party for her cousin. Cousin is marrying the hero's nephew. Hero pretends not to know the heroine until she is in Spain as her cousin's chaperone and then blackmails her into a revenge marriage.
Revenge marriage?
In this hero's mind the heroine slept with his bff the next morning after hero took her virginity. So this is his revenge for causing him to marry the wrong woman and be so miserable.
Yes, it makes no sense. Yes, the heroine falls into bed with him knowing what he thinks of her. And yes, it's an overheard conversation that finally sets the hero straight - not logic or understanding of human nature.
One of my less favorite book by Jacqueline Baird. I hoped to find the style of her other reunion stories, but this one didn't work for me. Sorry! However she is still one of my favorite romantic authors. 1 star ☹️ P.D.
At least heroine wasn't celibate! Thank god for that! But the hero was a bastard and said between the heroine and his friend he believed his friend yet when the truth comes out all he needs to do is get pathetically drunk, shut himself up and pass out and voila, he's forgiven? How STUPID can a woman get?
Ok, so I've been travelling for a while now and couldn't get around to finishing this one till very recently. This book was ok with a few twists including a a h who sleeps with a man who isn't the H (although to be fair, she hadn't seen the H in 10 years and was bound to find a man at some point - and it was just one man and one night). I liked the story and the characters, although, it didn't have the sizzle of a JB's other romances. Also the h Rose and the H Xavier were a mature couple and a little bit older than the usual protagonists in HPland. A decent read.
Ten years ago Xavier Valedspino and Rosalyn “Rose” May shared a night together. A very passionate night, but when Xavier was called away Rose was given of some hard truths (you know they weren’t), and hightailed it out of there. Xavier has never forgiven her and now she is within his reach again. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
It wasn’t a bad read. I wished that the older Xavier would have cut her some more slack given her age, as readers do for the younger Hs, but alas he did NOT. He blackmails her to get what he wants and of course can’t trust the explanation she gives him. In essence Rose didn’t trust one of the parties to hold true and so Xavier very easily blackmailed her. I did like that at least Rose tried to move on from him though. Of course Xavier moved on and even married – this was part of the problem they had all those years ago.
Xavier can’t trust her and she really shouldn’t trust him as he twists things to suit himself. He seems to lie a few times. At one time he says he doesn’t need a mistress that he already has one, this implies it is going on now, and yet that changes later as he claims he hadn’t made love in 6 months. So why the mistress on the scene that is calling him? I guess it’s the old cliché plot device. Xavier doesn’t want to discuss the past, but when it rears its ugly head as it undoubtedly does he is pushed to almost hitting her. And it didn’t sound like a slap either. Something about fingers curling into a fist!
Also this woman that pops in and out that Xavier couldn’t even bother to introduce Rose too, what is up with that? Claims she is a friend of his late wife but Xavier is rude enough not to introduce Rose to her and he seems to allow this woman to cling to him at other times. Why would this woman even attend his father’s funeral if she is not even his friend? It doesn’t make sense. The truth about their time long ago comes out, Xavier holds true to his grudge holding and all is resolved. Overall it was a decent read and I believed that Xavier cared about Rose.

I actually REALLY liked this one! The emotions behind each character were downright delightful. Even the 'villain' was alright by me, this time it was a male! A first for me. I was delighted in this novel, truly!
I love the h, she is spunky and it is rare that a harlequin h has very strong opinions regarding poverty. She is also smart, figuring out what happened way before the stubborn H and is willing to make a bad situation as best she can instead of mopping and doing silly things like acting a scared virgin and refusing the H, as we all know the girls. can never do that in a harlequin anyways.
I don't like the H as much as he seems to despise the h so much that nothing can change his mind. Though he did try to let bygones be bygones, he seems to struggle quite a bit with the idea. As the last few weeks of the story was not told in details and only from the h's very biased pov, one doesn't get how remorseful he has been, I probably can believe him better if we did see some scenes described there.
I am really angry on their behalf when reading this, so many years wasted destroyed by a man's few words (I prob will feel better if it is just a few years like the standard harlequin). Am also pissed illogically that the H did get married to that girl in the end (in a sense the villain got what he wants)...

The H was truly Machiavellian in the way he pretends not to know h when they meet up again and engineer their marriage in the name of revenge. Seriously twisted H and a messed up virginal h. h pretends to be a feminist but never quite stands up for herself and comes across as a doormat the minute she marries.
This was so-so. But too much side stuff that distracted from the couple. Hero is just plain dumb. But it's weird after 1 night they were like 'lets live together!'...okay crazies slow down. Liked that the heroine was a doctor. Cause damn right she is! Hero is doing business and racing...not much else. Eh, read it.
