Author Cameron Walker has written a book that’s probably wonderful — but not for me. A goodly portion of the book is an exegesis on ketogenic diets in general and the “Classic Keto Diet” in particular. I found myself skimming most of that. I’m not interested in following a diet that’s stringent on carbs and ketosis; I just want to reduce my carb intake.
But that wasn’t my only quibble with Ketogenic Diet for Beginners. For every decent recipe like Sweet Macadamia Chicken or Peanut Butter Cookies, there were more unpalatable ones like Avocado Beef Candy, Parsley Quiche, Feta Mint Pancake Dip or the recipes calling for “hemp hearts.” (Where on earth would I buy those?) I got this book for free on Kindle Unlimited; otherwise, I would have been resentful.
I have been looking into the ketogenic diet for about a year now. I've tried keto coffee and looked casually into the diet, but never read in-depth. This seemed like the perfect solution, because it not only explained the diet, it also had meal plans and recipes.
Unfortunately, it wasn't well-written or organized, even for the little I know about keto. Some of the information seemed contradictory (although it turned out it was more how it was presented than actual contradictions). The writing was uneven and the editing was non-existent. Add to this that the book was originally formatted for print and never re-formatted for digital (this was a Kindle Unlimited book), and it was too much work to dig out the nuggets of good information in the midst of several pages that rambled.
I still held out hope that the menus and recipes would be good, but most of them were written in the same rambling style.
I cannot recommend this book, although there was a lot of good information buried in the dross.
