Little Sember stole readers' hearts in "Siena." Join her now, ten years later, as she embarks on a quest of her own to save her people, and to finally accept her true self along the way. - - - Sixteen and struggling is not how Sember wants to describe herself. Born with the ability to conjure fire, every day is a challenge to keep the churning blaze within her under control. After nearly incinerating her parents at the age of six, guilt and doubt plague her at every turn.
While the village's gifted healer is away, a mysterious disease sweeps through Foresthome, and people start dying. When her parents get infected and the resident herbalist has no solutions, she takes it upon herself to track the clues and locate the source of this unnatural plague. Joined by her brother and a handsome Iceling, they must unravel the mystery and face an unexpected enemy in the shadows. If they fail, the plague will engulf the world she knows, plunging it into dark times.

I wasnt sure if this author could write a book as good as Siena, but she proved me wrong. i honestly think i liked this book even better!
I loved Sember in book 1 and it was nice to get to see her all grown up in book 2. It was a fun and suspenseful read to follow her around and understand all she struggled with.
Jastin is pure perfection. I loved him and swooned the whole time once I got to meet him. He was such a wonderful character to follow and I found myself flipping through the pages just to get more of him!
The book makes you not able to put it down with all the suspense that goes on within it. the writing is superb and makes you feel you are right in Foresthome with Sember. I love that isnt a full romance but a book about finding yourself and doing the right thing even if its hard.
I cant wait to read anything more that Zoe writes, im a fangirl for life!
I just finished Sember, the second installment in the Forestfolk series. I loved it. Everyone can relate to Sember on some level. The book explores her self-doubt and at times desire to be anyone other than herself. Goben and Jastin help shape the way Sember views herself and others. Sember is a strong, stubborn, and independent young woman. Her adventures and relationships keep you hooked from the beginning. I look forward to the third installment of the Forestfolk series that will feature Nirrin.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I thought Sember was a great character with complex emotions. It was really great to be inside of her head for a little bit.
For me, the pacing was a little slow. I went into this book knowing that, as I had previously read Siena, so I didn't really mind as I knew what I was signing up for. But I just wanted to say that this book isn't as action packed as it's promised to be. It's less about the plague and more about Sember's inner turmoil and longing for acceptance.
The ending seemed a little too good to be true, with all the stars suddenly aligning and everything in the world being right all of a sudden. It didn't detract from the story as whole, but it felt very sudden and abrupt.
Lastly, I wish this series had some more diversity. I understand that people of colour might be hard to encorparate as they'd have to come from a different continent, which would be practically impossible in the time period this is set in, but every single character in this book is white and heterosexual. If not that, then I wish the iceling's culture had been explored more. But the icling tribe seems the same as Foresthome, even though the conditions are extremely different. They even speak the same language. I just think this book could have been a lot more interesting if that was the case, but instead, I just felt like I was reading about the same place but it was a bit colder.
Overall, I think this is a fun book. The world is a little dull but the characters gifts and personalities stopped me from growing bored. If you're looking for a action filled fantasy or a magical world to get lost in, this isn't the book for you. But if you want great characters and very real emotions, I would definitely recommend.
Sember was a great read and a brilliant sequel to Sienna. Though there is a little bit of cringey dialogue here and there (Sember and Sienna) the book still keeps you engrossed in it as Sember battles her own thoughts as well as try to protect those she cares about from herself as much as from the external threats that loom over her world. It is hard to pin point what makes this book stand out and a worthwhile read without giving away spoilers so if you are looking for a relatable easygoing fantasy then this book is definitely for you.
PS* You do not have to have read Sienna to read this one but doing so will result in spoiling Sienna which is a good enough book itself.
