5.0⭐️ I just realized something. I seem to love very intense emotional reads. This is such a book. Ace Davenport is a very wealthy 33 year old white man who owns a hotel conglomerate. For 3 years, since the death of his wife and child, he has held a memorial service to honor them. His family and close friends think that it is time for him to move on and get past his grief, but he can't. He has immersed himself in his work. He tells himself that he is "still searching for joy of life, if only he knew where to start". His family staged and intervention and told him to take a few days of much needed rest and relaxation at a resort he owned in the Bahamas. His dad took him aside and suggested that Ace meet some ladies there and have some fun. He told his dad that he was dead inside and had not had the slightest interest in relationships since the death of his wife. Smiling, Ace's father gave him some sage advice--when that special woman comes along, his body would overrule his head "by a mile".
Efia Kwanteng was born in the states and her parents are immigrants from Ghana. She is 23 years old and has been raised in a strict environment, still lives at home and has never struck out on her own. This book gives a rich account of the social conduct and established way of life of the Ghanaian. Efia has applied for a job and has accepted it at the resort in the Bahamas. She courageously told her parents what she was going to do. Her father told her that once she left, there would be no coming back.
Efia and Ace meet at the resort. She has been assigned to him as his personal assistant while on the island.
This is the story of Efia and Ace and how they each must slay their demons. The story is moving and intensely emotional. There is much, much more to this story. We learn how hard it is to break away from tradition; we learn how grief can keep us stuck and how feelings of guilt keep us from following our hearts. This book is all heart. I highly recommend it.
Skylar Ward's new novel focuses on Ace Davenport, he's lost both his wife and baby. He's suffers from depression and survivors remorse. After three years of mourning, his parents and best friend Drew forces him to go on a vacation. While on vacation he meets Ghanian born by way of New York Efia Kwanteng, who comes from a traditional family. Efia's works at the resort as a personal concierge, it becomes her job to make sure that Ace has a wonderful vacation. While in paradise both people fall in love. Efia is just out of college, seeking independence and has no plans for love until Ace. The week vacation creates a closeness and another unexpected surprise. Ace feels guilty for falling in love and backs away from Efia.
This was a sweet story and I really commend the author for representing an African woman and putting tid bits of Ghanian languages, food and cultural traditions. The author educates the reader and Ace about Africa while the two get to know one another.
The only thing I didn't like about the story was the fact that the author uses the " I was scared to tell you about the baby" storyline. I think it created unnecessary conflict between the two. I do think the author does a great job of not just having Ace get over his loss but takes the time to show that falling in love with another person doesn't erase your past. While he loved his new life he still had to seek help to accept his new family and to recover from his lost.
It was a great story. Hopefully, Drew, Ashley and even Leland get their own stories. I'm giving this story a 4.5
I agree that this is such a lovely, heartwarming love story. You will really find yourself rooting for Efia and Ace. They are both really likable characters and I think the author does an amazing job developing the characters and giving them lots of meat. When you get to know them and what their backstories are, you will get a better sense of understanding as to why they make the choices they do. The story spans five years and it’s a page turner. I really had a hard time putting it down. No crazy or unrealistic storyline either (well with the exception of him being a billionaire, but you'll see what I mean.) Like, this relationship could actually occur in the real world and I just love how well Skylar Ward details how these two approach their cultural and class differences. It was really well done. And of course, there’s no shortage of steamy love scenes. Recommended read!
I tried not to read this whole thing in one day but I had to find out what happened next even though I had things to do so yeah was a fan already and I'm looking forward to the next story!!
Eighteen percent (18%) into this book and I couldn't place it down. The way the book led up to this pivotal part had me clobbering every word, every action and every details herein after. The book ensnared me from that point on, kept me well entertained and I don’t regret any second of it. Every page turned spent reading Finding Love at Life's Crosswords is a defining moment with deep admiration.
This is a story about two individuals from opposite side and it detailed what makes them almost identical to another. Ace Davenport and Efia Kwateng.
Ace, unlike many main alpha characters is not prudish, rude, or overly obnoxious. He's hurting after going through a really traumatic experience. The author did a noteworthy job of actually making him a well-rounded character, deeply flawed, but lovable and whole at the same time.
Efia sucks you into her world from the start. She's a shy impressionable girl who is still figuring out what to do with her liveliness. After living with strict Ghanaian parents, she was ready to take flight and find her vocation. An opportunity presented itself and she met Ace on a twisted cloud of destiny.
Ace still haunted by the death of his wife tried to move pass the barrier that halted him in his depressive mood and led caution to the wind. Meeting Efia tuned out to be more than he bargained for. She unknowingly helped him stripped away the character of a grieving widow.
I love the dynamic displacement of the book. Every character of this book is an entire person in their own right, distinct and endearing. From Efia's dad (he's hilarious), her friend Ashley and her mom, Rosina. They all added a bonus mixture to a very productive and complex storyline. It was easy to be enthralled by them entirely.
This book is primarily character-driven, and I love how much time and devotion the author put into this. Bit by bit the plot progresses and we set out to witness the growth, development and change of the main characters.
Ms. Ward I just want to commend you for performing such an excellent job of writing an unraveling story about characters with distinctive qualities. You show their flaws, faultings and lives. That in itself was beautiful and complex without getting redundant.
This book, in my opinion, floats out of the 'what if' notion. It taps into your graphic imagination and proceeds to live there. The story personable and real.
This is a book I definitely recommended. The characters are well-written and whole, flaws and virtues heaped upon them in equal quantity. The composition itself is flawless and intellectual, every word a story unto itself.
Finding Love at Life's Crosswords is a fascinating and telling book from start to finish.
Ace was broken...in heart and soul....broken into pieces of guilt, sorrow, death and pain...he needed peace...he needed joy...he needed laughter.....he needed Efia.....a beautiful innocent sweet girl....from Ghana...raised from the age of 4 in America...Ace goes to the Caribbean for a little relaxation....and falls for Efia Kwateng....who just accepted a job at the resort that happens to be where Ace is staying...I absolutely love how Skylar seamlessly intertwined the West African culture with everyday American life...the characters are so easy to love and Ace will have you love and hate him while rooting for Efia and her adorable surprise...
Another great read by Skylar Ward, which I haven't read in quite sometime but this story did not disappoint. Broken hearted Ace goes to one of his properties to get himself back on track after losing his wife and child and immediately falls for the much younger Efia. Of course, she ends up pregnant but decides to keep the child a secret out of fear. I always love the moment when the guy finds out about his kid(my guilty pleasure) and Ace hits the roof! All in all a great story once Ace decides he needs to deal with the death of his previous family in order not to lose his new one.
I love her stories. All the characters are well developed. I want an epilogue or 2. •••••••
•••••••••Spoiler Alert•••••••• Just so I can know about future kids and his experiences being a dad from the very beginning of her pregnancy.
The only thing I didn’t like and this is a personal pet peeve of how black women are somehow always expected or are put in positions to rebuild, heal and take crap from ppl (men especially). But , I like that Efia took no crap no matter her age or experience level. She had values and was a strong character. So thanks Mrs. Ward for another and always giving each character depth and writing another bomb a** story. 💜💜💜💜
I gave this trilogy 3 stars overall, but I didn't feel like it should've been a 3 novel tale. Too drawn out for sure. I wasn't comfortable with the age gap..Efias' quick jump to sex with Ace or his reasons for basically dumping her. Too much unnecessary angst especially at their ages. But I loved the mix of cultures and that the author didn't pretend that it wouldn't be an issue. There was no real closure to The Sam character. You will see the author was heading into a certain direction with him and then it was just dropped. In the end it's just an okay read.
This was an excellent book. I loved how the author kept the reader on edge almost asking the universe/faith to hold on until Ace and Efia can get together...just writing this is making my heart beat so fast as I imagine the many times more on Ace's side than on Efia's how he was on the brink of asking someone to marry him... This works have been a different story all together... This story was worth reading in one day, this is how good it was.
I have read several books by this author and I have never been disappointed. This was a wonderful book about love and finding love after a loss. This book was well written. Highly recommend.
I loved reading about Ace and Efia and Yasmine with her grown self lol.I also loved reading about the Ghanian foods!Yummy❤I want to know more about Drew and Ashley.Overall this was a really really good love story. You should read it, you wont be sorry!
I have enjoyed other novels of this author and love to tell everyone who will listen about her. This was a long, relaxing and enjoyable read. The dynamics were fabulous and the characters are believable. The attention to detail is great.
If you love a second chance romance this book is for you. The characters are great the author has gone a great job of making them believable and you can't help but root for them from start to finish. I would highly recommend this book!!!
