Working in retail is always interesting, but when the store is Avalon Spellshop, the employees are Witches, and the customers are tourists, things can get downright crazy.

Brit, Tanner, and Jordan live the retail life in an old city where Witchcraft thrives in the underground community their store serves. Their boss is cool, they love their jobs, and they mostly get along. But can this quirky bunch of magickal misfits unravel the clues to find an ancient, powerful spell before their dark witch rivals over at The Poison Apple?

To embark on this mission Brit must venture beyond the safety of her books, Tanner must choose a side, and Jordan may have to slow her roll as the witchiest party girl in town.

Grab your wand, a huge coffee to go, and join The Retail Witches on the magical adventure of a lifetime (or at least of this tourist season).

I thought Retail Witches would be a fun book to take me into the spooky season. However, I struggled finding the motivation to pick it up everyday and decided to DNF it.

From what I could gather Retail Witches follows three young adults working in the Avalon Spellshop. This episodic story followed the daily lives of the staff and patrons of the shop in this small town.

Stylistically this book didn't jive with me. Goodrich overly described innocuous details too much for me to really get on with the flow of the story. Every time a character or setting was introduced the story would halt as Goodrich described every single detail about it. It was really hard to hold all this information in my head and parse what was important to remember and what wasn't.

The characters in this book were indistinct and lacked personality. While each of the three protagonists had specific traits, Goodrich wasn't very effective in conveying their personalities to the reader. None of them had a very distinct voice so even remembering things about them was difficult at times. The most memorable thing about them was how unmemorable they were.

This book didn't seem to have any plot for as far as I read. I had no idea where the story was going at the point where I put it down, and honestly I wasn't interested enough to find out. The book felt very episodic as we were following the day to day machinations of the Avalon Spellshop, but none of these stories were very compelling or charming.

Retail Witches was just a book too boring to continue reading. Every time I picked it up it put me to sleep, and I had no motivation to continue on with it.

What this is - a fun ya novel about mostly teen/early twenties girls, that's focused on being evocative of the feeling of being at a place at a given time. A cool autumn seaside town. Hot summer beaches and open water. I notice reveries say the exposition drags, but if you're wanting that evocative feeling, and like worlds where magic is just below the surface, this is a great read. I rather liked all the characters, even the supporting cast i found intriguing, with enough left unsaid that they still have some mystery to them.

It's not a deep character study, and I'm quite done with that, sometimes you just want a fun and light story that's not going to leave you emotionally drained after a long day.

Slow to get to the real action but nevertheless a good read

Very slow to get to the point. However the look at the lives of the people employed at the shop was well worth sticking with this. More of a family saga with overtures of paranormal mystery. The characters are varied and full but if this was meant to be a fast paced plot it missed the mark. However even so a good read but just wished it moved faster.
