Naofumi's plans to hunt down Kyo got a little sidetracked when he followed Kyo back to another world. But now that he's reunited with his party again, they're making the preparations needed to fight. Except that Kyo isn't exactly sitting back waiting for them. He's prepared a number of obstacles. And he's also got the power he's stolen from the Spirit Tortoise to use to fuel his incredible magic.

This book had so many parts that left me laughing so hard I had to put the book down for a moment.

“You think you stand a chance against all of us together?” I laughed, sounding like a cheap pirate. Oh well.
“Naofumi, that’s what people say before they lose.”

And how he then trolls the enemy. It's another stellar defensive ability---like his Hate Control skill without the need to actually activate a skill. Naofumi naturally being a jerk can distract human enemies.

Also I love the fact that Naofumi is still gaining more and more really bizarre skills that he can turn to clever uses. He unlocks rickshaw abilities, which passively boosts whatever he's carrying, so Raph-chan and Filo start perching on him during fights to take even better advantage of his boosts (PLEASE let this be an anime . . . I really want to see this. And his expression.)

The scene where all the animals are curled up against him is also really cute.

And his armor is as amazing (ly bad) as ever. He can't escape from weapon shop owners who want to deck him out to look like a villain. Better yet, this set is cursed!

“What if I try it on and it seriously injures me?”
“We’ll just have to rush to get you treated. I know a good doctor.”

And:

Judging from what I’d seen of her work so far, I was pretty impressed with Romina’s craftsmanship. That is, if I ignored the somewhat murderous intentions of the armor I was wearing.

Although my FAVORITE part is absolutely the locked door. Naofumi's dead on about what to do about it (and Kizuna's reaction is funny just because it's such a gamer way to think about things), and then when Raphtalia goes along with his plan it was even funnier. Even here, in this other world, he's stuck working with people who are so much seeing this as a game they totally overlook the obvious.

“You want to solve puzzles, but that would imply that there are puzzles to solve. You think he left behind keys for us to find? I doubt it!”
Who would do something like that? He ’d have to be crazy to leave clues for invaders to come find him.
No—we were going to break down all the doors, find Kyo, and make him pay.

I'm a little sorry Yomogi doesn't get much chance to develop. She gets a lot of page time, but since most of that is during the fight, it doesn't do a whole lot for her as a character. That's a shame even if she isn't likely to show up again. Kyo also ended up unfortunately a lot flatter than I would have liked. Yomogi was the perfect opportunity to expound more on who he was in the past and provide specific memories, but that doesn't happen. The other women don't contribute anything to that either.

It's a shame Naofumi will have to return "home" after this, as I quite enjoyed this time he got to fight with people who aren't willfully stupid. The various digs at gamers and game mechanics were entirely on point, too. I rate this book Recommended.

Finale of the long arc that started in volume 5 or so. While it neatly ties up the major conflict from there, the overall presentation still feels very messy with the author's tendency to keep introducing new characters without giving them much exposition or build-up, and this seems to be his way to write himself out of ruts.

Equally problematic is the main character's borderline misanthropism and borderline contempt for almost all the new characters he meets, even if they are helping him as much as they can. This volume does tone it down towards the very end, but it really does tend to present a very skewed view of the world and its characters.

Another issue of this volume would be the fight scenes, which I aren't really depicted very smoothly. There is a tendency of the author to like to start wasting passages dedicated to explaining the hero's powers and figuring out how to use it, but it detracts from the flow of what is supposed to be a climatic battle.

Overall, I do feel this long arc tries too hard at introducing things but they don't really have much of an impact and doesn't really feel like it will tie back to the main story in the end.

I didn't expect the shield hero story to be this interesting "Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari [Shield Hero]"

One day, Naofumi Iwatani found a book in the library that caused him to be summoned as a hero in another world. However, the ability he gained was to use a shield. Because many underestimate him, he faces many conspiracies and betrayals that cause Hirofumi to lose everything. A heroic fantasy story that starts from the ground up!

The Four Main Heroes are a group of ordinary people from modern Japan who are summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc to become saviors. Melromarc is a country plagued by Calamity Waves that have repeatedly ravaged the land and brought disaster to its citizens for centuries. The four heroes are each gifted with a sword, spear, bow, and shield to conquer these Waves. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, is cursed to be the "Shield Hero". Armed with only a very small shield, Naofumi is underestimated and ridiculed by his fellow heroes and the people of the kingdom for his weak attack capabilities and lackluster personality.

When the heroes were given resources and companions to train with, Naofumi set out with the only person willing to train with him, Malty Melromarc. However, he is soon betrayed by her, and accused of taking advantage of her. Naofumi then became severely discriminated against and hated by the Melromarc people for something he did not do. With a storm of hurt and distrust raging in his heart while experiencing many betrayals from his comrades, Naofumi began his journey to strengthen himself and his reputation, he vowed to train hard to become stronger and take revenge on them. However, furthermore, the difficulty of being alone began to arise, so Naofumi bought a near-dead slave named Raphtalia to accompany him on his journey.

As the Waves approach the kingdom, Naofumi and Raphtalia must fight for the survival of the kingdom and protect the people of Melromarc from a terrible future. Naofumi and Raphtalia's hard and relentless leveling up as a shield and sword paid off as they helped many struggling villages. While the other three heroes did not fulfill their responsibilities in helping to protect the citizens and instead became complacent with their status which tended not to develop much compared to Naofumi (Far).

After that Naofumi also got a pet egg that later became a bird named Filo from the same place as the slave seller Raphtalia. With the fact that she could turn into a petite girl and turned out to be a replacement for the legendary bird queen. Likewise, Raphtalia is growing fast because the maturity of their race is determined by the stronger they are, the more mature they will be, this happens solely because of the fate of the shiled hero that what is by his side will be special, I will not forget the beginning of the development of Naofumi, Raphtalia and Filo at an extraordinary story level.

Long story short, the distortion of the world and heroes does not only exist in their world, it turns out that the summoning of heroes and the destruction of the world also exists in other worlds, which causes each world to be destroyed and hostile.

For me, volumes 1-9 of the light novel or 24 episodes in season 1 are a very good work on the story of the shield hero from the summoning, betrayal, resurrection, and proof. It is when you delve into Naofumi's role that the atmosphere is so alive that you are also involved in the plot of revenge until episode 24, unfortunately season two is a bit bland and October will air season three.

Overall season one/ Volume 1-9

This is my original review at the time, which I think on a current re-read, I would downgrade it a star, but I'm leaving it at four because I wasn't by then tired of the lack of progresssion:

So I chugged through another thick but very readable tome (almost 400 pages!!! "light novel" my butt), and it's still... I love the characters and setting and so on, and it totally reads like a game I'd love to play...

But...

If you were to ask me what happened in any specific volume, I couldn't tell you for certain. Like, I could tell you what happened in this one because I JUST read it, but volume 5? Can't remember precisely. I know the rough timeline but not how it breaks down per volume. Even 1, I can tell you how things start but not exactly where the volume ends.

It's like the NYT crossword of novels. Enjoyable but don't remember the particulars afterwards.

I'd say that's a common thing with long-running serials (even in manga, I can't tell you what happens in volumes 2-26 of Fullmetal Alchemist with any accuracy, though I could tell you the timeline well enough), but Classroom of the Elite is clearly delineated per volume by that volume's major problem to solve (or, in case of the interim ".5" volumes, filler). Like, I'm pretty sure any fan could tell EXACTLY what any HP book was about because they were divided neatly by year.

Shield Hero and these? Just kind of ambling along until they reach a stopping point.

Just an observation, not a specific complaint, although I kind of don't like that it's like that.

This is a great final volume to the arc, wrapping it up in an interesting and exciting way. It makes me all the more curious where the series is going to go and what more is going to be learned about the worlds and the waves.

However, just like the last several volumes, there are so many typos...

Also, it's really annoying how basically every girl/woman in this series is beautiful (other than the old lady). Naofumi points this out himself, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. It's like the author doesn't know how to describe a woman besides being beautiful or old.

Overall, this is a great conclusion to the arc and leaves you curious what's happening next. A lot of questions were answered in this arc, but also many were raised.

A mediocre dip in the story, but also the finale of a rather long story arc.
These long narrative arcs seem really drawn out with the introduction of new characters and really 'cheap' exposition. It's easy to tell that the author's trying to write himself out a rut.

Not to mention, it's becoming problematic with the poor editing/translations from One Peace.
It's a rough combination that really has me tempted to drop the series entirely.
I'm just curious where the story goes now.

The author didn't put much effort into writing the book. It is full of "he didn't really know what he was doing but hey he did it anyway" , "looks powerful, but it wasn't but it actually was" and other similar stuff.
I was reading it and thinking "This writer was bored! He's just going through the motions to get to the end battle". And that's what it was. Some stuff was fun, most of it was boring...

It'll be a long while until I pick up this series again.

although good just like the others , this volume seemed like it was rushed a bit. the other spent a lot of time trying to move from point to point that I never really got an overall sense of the "new" world and L'arc's country or anything. looking forward as always to the next Volume tho

Good ending of the arc

Naofumi shoes a bit more humanity and gains more friends he can trust. Too bad they're in another world. But, a friend is a friend regardless of where they are.

Story is starting to get boring

I'm not sure what it is but the story and the writing just started to get tedious for me. I think the editor or translator must have changed because it felt like someone else wrote it to me.

End of a story arc and ya know, I just didn't care. What should have been a one (two at the most) sitting read took me 3 weeks because I never felt invested in this book or the characters. This is sad because I really enjoyed volume 8. Alas, it didn't do it for me.

Your mileage may vary.

Read this series

A few typos and some repetitive writing drops it to four. It is a fantastic take on the hero stories.

Vol 9 finds us on the hunt for Kyo, but before Naofumi and the others can begin their search in earnest, they’re attacked by Yomogi, a wild sword-wielding woman claiming to be an assassin for Kyo! While they’re settling in for the night at that.

War is on the horizon, and numerous battles erupt on Naofumi’s quest to find and punish Kyo. With the introduction of Yomogi, we get another beautiful and powerful addition to the Shield Hero’s party, however reluctant she might be. Kyo is a many-faced villain who shows people the side that they want to see, and in doing so, the wielder of the Book weapon has a country ready to go to war with him.

TRying to find a way to stave prevent that war and locate and defeat Kyo is an ordeal for Naofumi and co. Not only does he have to keep his eye on Yomogi the entire journey, he has to decide whether or not she’s trustworthy enough to lead them to Kyo. Especially when she believes Kyo is a hero and Naofumi is the villain.

What follows are battles full of close calls, power ups that border ex machinas and unexpected twists. I’d be lying if I said that this Volume lacked in a couple of areas. It was an enjoyable read, but I found my attention drifting throughout. Don’t get me wrong, the fights were interesting, the back and forths between the characters is good as ever, but despite the high stakes, I never really felt anyone in the Shield’s party was in any real danger. Maybe that’s due to Naofumi always coming through in the end, but he is the Shield after all, so I guess he should be able to protect those he cares about.

I will say that I’m interested to see if he will be able to stay in contact with every he’s met once he’s back in the world he was summoned to. I like everyone, so I definitely want to see and learn more about them. And I wouldn’t mind seeing them help Naofumi out back in the world he was summoned. Only time will tell though. Hopefully things are more engaging in the next Volume, as this one wasn’t one of my favorites.

Too short for a good arc!

Naofumi and his party are now adapted to the world of Kizuna, the Hunting Hero! Their stay even lasted a wave. Raphtalia's character grew up further in the new world, from being a hero of her own to being a Japanese-style Kirito, so proud for best girl!

Though it's disappointing that the other Three Heroes of Kizuna's world were never given spotlight, much like the three idiot heroes of Raphtalia's world. With a long sequence of battles to defeat Kyo, the sudden tactics of Kyo prove that he's a powerful vassal weapon her, or villain.

Too bad we won't see more of Kizuna's group after this, the Shield Hero's purpose is done for this world. Back to Melromarc and do some clean-up.
