4 stars. This story was part of my English exam (writing an alternate ending... *sigh*) and it was much better than I expected it to be, honestly. I don’t know when this was written but it feels more 1890s/early 1900s-ish... very familiar style to me. The romance is cute but mostly I loved John's family & father, and the amazing message against false pride and snobbishness...

i liked the concept of shame and its connection with snobbery. although John Harcourt had a long time to learn not to be ashamed of his parent's simple lives, yet i couldn't hate him for feeling ashamed and dejected. The character of the father was a great one since he gave his son a great lesson without actually involving. However, i didn't enjoy the writing style.
