It's all fun and games until the day you get promoted.
Ian Dex was living the dream. He was a supernatural cop who worked from sundown to sunup, took down the bad guys, and got to play around with the ladies on his squad.

Too bad the good times don't last forever.

A fae by the name of Fay showed up and the wheels fell off. She'd gotten her hands on a mind-control device that promised to help her take over the city. Despite what you may have heard, it turns out that being subjected to the influence of a mind-control device isn't all that fun. Fortunately for Ian, there was something about his genetic makeup that gave him an edge.

Join the ride and learn how Ian Dex, officer extraordinaire, became the chief of the Las Vegas Paranormal Police Department. It not only changed his place in the department, it also put one hell of a damper on his sex life.

I read this book straight after The Bleeding. It was another decent story, well written and again I enjoyed the world-building as we see Ian's switch from Netherworld to cop in Las Vegas. A dangerous Fae called Fay is trying to take over the city and starts by taking control of the Chief and Ian's partner Rachel. Ian isn't as infected and realises that it is up to him to stop Fay and save the city. I liked the actual story and we see Ian using different skills-his brain and the department's AI Lydia-who gushes and coos at Ian in an annoying way.

My fears did come to pass in this short story. From start to finish, Ian is talking about and thinking about sex non stop, which gets in the way of a good story. A few lines in, he's telling the reader about banging Rachel and propositions her later in the story too, he tries to seduce a woman at the hotel, gives an account of an ex, and is considering sex with Fay. All in a short story. There are the typical crude comments about the women which are sexist, and Ian is like a walking hormone who is also vain and arrogant. I didn't much like his character in this story. Sex seems to be his reason for living and it gets in the way as he tries to chat up women when he should be doing his job. Who would promote this guy to boss??? I'm now not sure about even going to the full length novel but I would still try other series the author has written in this world and hope for less sex and more plot.

Maybe being a mixed up super has some perks?

Another good read. He's now been topside for over a year and has had a steady relationship with his female partner for a while. When a query from their AI comes in about their Chief, they both jump to the rescue. His connector to the department stopped working. They know he went to see the new head of security at one of the casinos. A fae, named Fay (loved the play on words here), has a gadget that emits light and makes everyone her minion. Everyone except him. He can still feel his old self but seems split in two. Getting the help of the AI he devises a plan to shake off the feeling, a plan to get Fay and work out how her gadget works to restore free will to all. Will it work or will outside help be needed? An undercover officer, a possible gunfight and a retirement. What will it all mean for our newest member of the Vegas police department?
A bit tongue in cheek in places but overall nice action and a growth in character that is surprising.

In this short story we get to see Ian 2 years into being with the Las Vegas PPD. It is not a spoiler to say that we learn how he came to be chief. We were told from the very beginning that he has been with the precinct for seven years, the last five as chief. Simple math. This was weird because, aside from Rachel and Lydia (who is always a treat), we don’t get the crew. They were missed. I wish we could have also gotten a story from WHEN Ian met everyone, especially Rachel. We were also informed of other cities with PPDs. As of 2025, neither of those have series though. Logic would dictate that all major (and most of the medium) sized cities have a PPD. Perhaps there is even one in Antarctica. There are after all Yeti and other cold loving supers. The possibilities lend themselves to decades worth of more series. I look forward to each and every one.

This fantastically funny new urban fantasy series about Ian Dex and his team in the Las Vegas Paranormal Police Department started with The Merging and is even better in Grave Creatures. The humour is there from the start, with Las Vegas being a great backdrop for it all and the team are all the better for being fun, sarcastic and neither perfect nor pc. There is a great mixture of action and storyline in this addictive series which kept me wanting to read more even though I knew I had to get up early for work in the morning?! I am enjoying seeing a great new series developing and absolutely cannot wait to read more!

This is a novella that tells some of the background of Ian Dex and how he became the chief of the PPD. You can read it in under an hour, but it is still a fully packed story that does not leaving you feeling like it is a short story. It has all the charm of the full length books, and Ian is at his best always. Even when given a job he doesn't want, but still knows he is the only one for it. Enjoyed it very much and can't wait for the other novella in this series.

A Fun Read

Ian has a lot of fun at his job as an officer in the Vegas Paranormal Police Department. Definitely a lover, but he can get serious when necessary. After the takedown of a powerful Fae, he becomes Chief of his department. I like the action, and witty remarks. Will his new position put a damper on his sex life. I look forward to the next book.

A nice short read that explains more about Ian. This explains some of the naughty wistfulness of Ian's interactions with his crew in the novels. It's a nice, short read that is perfect to read between novels.

Good quick short story to show how Dex became the Chief. Enjoyable, just too short, which in a series of novellas is saying a lot. 3.5 stars, just cuz it was so short, otherwise I would have rated higher. Good one.

A fun prequel that could be read at any point in the series. We get a little background into Ian’s past, which makes me hope we get to learn more about some of the other Las Vegas PPD members.

Fun & intriguing backstory describing how events transpired to make the LVPPD what it is today. Full of the snark and action we've come to expect from the relatively new Ian Dex series.

Great Introduction

The story is a prequel to the first book. Nice set up. This series is very different from most urban fantasy. Good take on the supernatural world.

Short Story in the Ian Dex world and how he became 'the chief'

Decent read, quite short, but gave me an insight to the main book series, which is in my 'to be read' pile

Kindle Unlimited, note bottom of blurb says Ian Dex Supernatural Thriller eBook categories: Dark Fantasy, Supernatural Thriller, Witches & Wizards, Urban Fantasy Thriller, Supernatural Shifter, Angels & Demons, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Paranormal and Urban Romance, Supernatural Mystery and Suspense, Vampires and Werewolves, assume just type of cross indexing of different possible readers/interests but just put Logsdon & whoever co-writer that time under 'Logsdon' roll my eyes and dive in...water is murky but know nothing can make me any worse than already am anyway, I do ARCs for him on longer books.
