There are three English translations of the Bible driven by Lutherans: God's Word (GW), the Evangelical Heritage Version (EHV), and William Beck's An American Translation (AAT). GW is translated and published by the God's Word to the Nations Mission Society, associated with the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod.
The goal of this translation is to produce a Bible that is easy for those without a strong reading proficiency or who lack Biblical literacy. The sentence structure and word choice is simple and the translation lacks words common in Christian circles, but uncommon outside the Church (e.g. grace, covenant, sabbath). The result is a Bible I would choose over paraphrases like the Good News Bible.
GW reads like a paraphrase and can be loose with their word choices, but the Introduction emphasizes frequently that they translate directly from the original languages, so I would categorize this as thought-for-though and not paraphrase.
As a Lutheran, I am very happy that Genesis 4:1 follows the lead of Luther's German Bible as GW reads "I have gotten the man that the LORD promised." Throughout the Old Testament, Christ is drawn out. Further, the meaning of symbolic names is emphasized (e.g. "Nod [The Land of Wandering]")
A drawback of this translation is that it prevents a reader from learning theologically important words. Grace is "goodwill"; Sabbath is "a day of rest - a holy day"; Repentance is "change the way you think and act." Therefore, this would be good for devotional reading or elementary instruction (especially the Old Testament prophets), but not for serious study or mature Christians.
In all, a whole-hearted recommendation.
