The great hunt is over. In the end, Timothy managed to keep his invaluable prize. A victory? Perhaps. But glory and adrenaline are very powerful narcotics, and tolerance builds quickly. Once deprived of them, life immediately becomes gray and bleak. What's more, his beautiful lover is beginning to transparently hint that she could find herself a more interesting beau. What is a talented player to do in this case? The solution suggests itself: rush headlong into the most dangerous adventures, taking risks and walking the blade of a knife. Timothy must do everything in his power to survive in places where making a clean escape is entirely impossible, delighting the viewers with his utterly unique playing style and proving decisively to his lady that his previous success was no mere coincidence. Will it be hard? Very! But old reliable friends are still by his side, and that means victory is possible.
Michael Atamanov was born in 1975 in Grozny, Chechnia. He excelled at school, winning numerous national science and writing competitions. Having graduated with honors, he entered Moscow University to study material engineering. Soon, however, he had no home to return to: their house was destroyed during the first Chechen campaign. Michael's family fled the war, taking shelter with some relatives in Stavropol Territory in the South of Russia.
Having graduated from the University, Michael was forced to accept whatever work was available. He moonlighted in chemical labs, loaded trucks, translated technical articles, worked as a software installer as well as scene shifter for local artists and events. At the same time he never stopped writing, even when squatting in some seedy Moscow hostels. Writing became an urgent need for Michael, driving him to submit articles to science publications, news fillers for a variety of web sites and a plethora of technical and copywriting gigs.
Then one day unexpectedly for himself he started writing fairy tales and science fiction novels. For several years, his audience consisted of only one person: Michael's elder son. Then, at the end of 2014 he decided to upload one of his manuscripts to a free online writers resource. Readers liked it and demanded a sequel. Michael uploaded another book, and yet another, his audience growing as did his list. It was his readers who helped Michael hone his writing style. He finally had the breakthrough he deserved when the Moscow-based EKSMO - the biggest publishing house in Europe - offered him a contract for his first and consequent books.
The Dark Goblin kept his epic flying mount but a gamer and a tester can't stop at this and the director at work is saying that he had not developed the herbalism enough. He gets two weeks to get at least 30 more levels of herbalism and to go on a trip along the river of the Underworld. He takes his army of 300 orcs with him.
They meet a lot of new NPC characters and a lot of new videos are made about their adventures. New friendships start and enemies are made. But he never treats digital NPC characters without respect.
The story is very interesting and it is easy to read or listen.
Well if you read this review you know the books so I will not repeat the best parts: the way he describes the life in the game.
Now it was really hard for me to rate it..... Until 80% it's 5 stars then suddenly
SPOILER
WTF?????? Why do we have again and again the same tropes and the main character begins to act as a compete retard!
1) Those who want to kill him are "immigrants for the middle east". Would it be possible once for bad guys not to be arabs? 2) Kira? She disappears and cut all bridges without any explanation. Nobody in real life would behave like that given the relationships between characters. Worse he does not even react really and comes back to the game... 3) Where is the police? So the internal security of a company replaces the police? And the main character is not even able to use something called a cell phone to record anything and to prove his point? In such a world where they would be really common. 4) Why women are ALWAYS the same ones. You have - the one to protect from hard (the sister and so on) - all the ones who are willing to do anything to earn power and are obviously pretty (can't we have normal people for once?). So we have there the dancer and the goblin - the one who's the love interest and who does not listen to anything and who is too dumb/short heated to listen to adult explanation (Kira here but you could have said Anastasia from the Shaman or some from Perimeter Defense). 5) Now the real WFT is the death and the way the AI is reacting. Come on? You are the company and you can't even control the inventory and/or characteristics of your own programs? A wish? And nobody noticed?
There is also a last problem 1) He had been killed and there is NO WAY for the burial to take place in less than two days (come on, this is a criminal investigation) 2) He has not been killed and then where is the family and where is Kira? Would you REALLY come in game before seeing your family? So the boss would like to get something whie you know that your sister is probably waiting for you? And you don't even ask her how she feels given her new legs?
CUT THE LAST 30 PAGES and give us another sound ending.
Bbbbllllaaaarrrrggghhhhh!!!! I try to get out but then you pull me back in!! Wow this was a fun book new twists, intrigue, deception, and of course brave little big ears in WAY over his head! Can’t wait for more!!! Keep writing and I’ll keep reading.
As a cntinuation of interesting RPG adventures, psycho thriller and now much more oriented towards Sci-Fi topics - the book has turned into detective drama. Still a great book
Wtf. That final twist was hella surprising Again, an improvement on the previous installment, but the minor inconsistencies are still present and ruin immersive reading. They aren't too numerous though
I enjoyed the first two books in the series, but this one was a distinct letdown. Numerous plotlines were started, none were finished, and the whole thing ends with a "pick your own meaning" type deal resulting in no resolution or closure which is utterly inappropriate for this sort of light fantasy.
While the character in the book is collecting masses of followers and overpowered weapons, the quality of the writing takes a deep plunge. There is one scene, where a person performs a 1000-word monologue with nothing but infodumping. And the end comes not totally unforeseeable but as one other reviewer already said with a push from even not one, not two, but three literal gods from the machine.
It seems as if the author was eager to jump the story to a certain point in the plot without caring for his readers.
Well unlike the other reviewers I enjoyed it, I did find it strange that Kira was awol for almost the whole book, don't know who to believe about his attempted murder (that's right i don't for one minute believe he has been killed and digitised) He is being played like a pawn by the corporation imho.
Still fantastic read I can't wait for the next after that epic cliff hanger ending....
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Zero story lines are resolved. This is not a book, it is nothing more than a long introduction for what comes next. As such it is a big middle finger to the reader and I really wish I hadn't wasted my time.
For some reason, I found this book much less enjoyable than the previous ones. Sad, as it's not a bad series overall, but....this one didn't work for me.
The problem I have found with reading litRPG is it often feels like it starts with the author's biggest desire and then the author attempts to create a story around it. In this case, as is with many other cases, the main character gets paid more money than most people earn on more traditional jobs to play a video game and play better than players who are far more knowledgeable and experienced than him while incredibly beautiful women, sometimes even models, are consistently throwing themselves at him both inside and outside of the game and many often feel like they are not good enough for him. Plus the video game is a full immersion virtual reality game with adult content. With that setting, the author then figures out how to fit in a plot.
Just as with the previous books, I almost did not get past the early part of the book. Had it been longer than it was, I likely would have put it aside and started on one of the many other books I have sitting on my back burner. But I stuck through it to the end. It has its good moments and its bad moments. It has many people acting in ways that make no sense.
Plus this is not a complete book. Far too many loose ends and it ends on a cliff hanger.
Honestly I am not sure if I will read the next in this series. Too many other books out there more worthy of my time and attention.
Very borderline 4 stars, but overall the series is quite fun, the gaming world is great, and the cast of characters is clever, so I cut it some slack. The author has an extremely breezy way of writing that is quite easy to read, even if not exactly literary, too many explanation points, etc. Because Audible didn't have the recording at the time, I ordered the book...it was apparently printed on demand and also signed by the author, which can't possibly be true, unless the Russian author is living in Delaware. There are numerous typographical errors in the text, which is over sized, and very easy on the eyes.
About 1/3rd into the book I was no longer in the grip of the story, and was able to put it aside frequently for other books. However, the conclusion was quite exciting. Putting aside plausibility (after all, this is a fantasy gaming book), I felt the author was extremely clever. Now I see that many reviewers here object to the ending, but I was overall delighted and/or intrigued, depending on which aspect is considered of the many shockers presented to the reader in the last few pages. I have the Audible version of the fourth book, and feel this is better when read to you. I am looking forward to it.
Someone spoiled a big aspect of this story in a review for an earlier book in the series--may they always be a level one Lothario in any game they play...
Suddenly I am a little bothered that I have to wait for the next installment! It’s always the most fun discovering something and enjoying immediate satisfaction as you chew through 3 or 6 books at once.
After a bit of powerful social commentary in the second book, this one moves from swashbuckling in the high seas to deserts and djinn. Dragons, pirates, genie, let us get as many fantastical elements, even a bit of mythology no less, into a little book!
And so the author does, and so it somehow works. These are not works of literary genius to me, not in the way of an epic poem or something to be utterly studied and dissected, these are fun novels about the fantastic. While the author might pull some material from every which game and pantheon, there is also something distinctly original here.
The AI discussion is almost enough to also push this into the realm of sci-fi.
Be sure to brush your teeth after, this is candy fiction in the way only a little green goblin, blonde girl, and blue genie on the cover can deliver.
What an insanely confusing ending. Is Timothy dead now? Was his recovery room just a simulation? Was that video of the graveyard faked? Is that server really meant to house his mind? All this time, people have been asking things like why he can generate quests for other users and he seems to be expert at catching bugs/ making the game do things it's not supposed to. He also has a telepathic link with his wyvern. Maybe the corporation decided that his mind and its unique interactions with the game were too valuable to lose. Maybe the NPC was never special and HE made her special by giving her permission to unlock things she never had before. I feel so crazy right now because the author set it up perfectly so that either of several competing interpretations can be valid here... and then just ends the fucking book. Goddamnit.
I like the game that Atamonov created I really do but making the MC an employee of the game creators just gives him a get out of jail free card. I honestly think this book got a higher score than the previous because his 'girlfriends' disappeared for a part of the book. I think if Atamanov created a series with only one love interest and without the blatant sexism that is always sprinkled in his series he would be a constant 4 to 5 star author for me because I always like his game worlds.
Also I can't believe that Atamanov really wrote in another secretary character that is enamored by the MC at first sight.
Also the ending dropped it down for me I'm not gonna lie
Cesky editor dovolenkoval asi aj pocas tretieho dielu. Ten totiz tiez obsahuje bambilion chyb.
Tolko jedinecnych predmetov, byliniek a postav, co padaju Amrovi do ruky, tomu by nejeden klan zavidel a paradoxne to uz prestava byt “hra”. Pevne verim, ze sa to poslednou knihou ukonci poriadne (ak to bude vobec zaverecny diel) a nedopadne to tak katastrofalne ako Smrtka ✊✊
I've gotten really behind on tracking my books so these are going to be quick.
Descent continuation of the series but feels a little disjointed at times. I get that he setting up a mystery and plot for future books but he's just put too much into this one.
So when I started reading this I thought "Well this is moving really slow" (might have been because I was reading 3 other books consecutively); But as the book went on I was drawn further in rather quickly. Very well written ( still a few grammar mistakes which are probably due to translation errors). It lefte wanting more at the end. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Not as good as the first two. Some situations/plot hooks are presented, and then abandoned (for example his girlfriend getting mad at him and being jealous of an NPC), then the end comes and just stops without any resolution. I gave the other books 4+ stars, but this feels like half a novel.
I hesitated to get this because of the horrible story description. It should have been: Real life girlfriend dumps him after Npc wife calls him in real world. New boss wants him to level his herbalism. Vampirism exposed, everyone out to get him for the bounty. Can't wait for the next episode.
Good addition to the LITRPG genre. Would recommend to anyone looking for their next litrpg series. I promise you won’t be disappointed. PS this is not a fake review! I am skeptical of 5 star reviews too but I assure anyone reading this that I am a genuine fan of this genre.
I continue to have issues with the believability of the characters and dialogue, but each book in this series has proven more compelling than the last. Our protagonist’s adventures become increasingly exciting, Taisha’s role is beginning to come together, the ending is great, and I can’t wait to see where book 4 goes. To think I almost stopped after the first book.
I almost gave this 4 stars instead of 5 due to the MC becoming a bit OP and a fair amount of plot armor being applied but then the ending was just to skillfully done not to forgive these shortcomings. It was so easy to burn through this one and yes I am already on the next one. Bravo and well done Mr. Atamanov!
