Sunny O’Sullivan has a lot on her plate. A new school, a new stepmother, a new baby brother. A new home in a small seaside town on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. She’s just trying to get through the last few months of high school – without her overly-dynamic new friend Annabel getting her into too much trouble, and without attracting too much attention from Jake, the school sleazebag.

And she’s trying to make sure that no one at her new school finds out the freaky truth about her birth – that her mother was struck and killed by lightening just moments before Sunny was born.

Luckily, Sunny turned out fine. She just feels a slight tingling in her hands, whenever she’s relaxed and happy.
Until one day, the tingling turns into something much more.

Suddenly she finds there’s nowhere she can’t go. Including prisoner-of-war camps in North Korea, where the new dictator, Chairman Kim Min-Jung, has been smashing through the demilitarized zone and into the South with the help of a mysterious new weapon. Kim Min-Jung just might have world domination on his mind, but no one knows what his plans are, or how he got hold of such a powerful weapon. The Western Allies have been trying to hold him back, but their commandos keep going missing.

But now Sunny can help them. She’s sure she can help – If only she could figure out where she was going… and understand Korean…

Needing a little direction, she finds Hunter Katz, a drop-dead gorgeous Intelligence agent. Together they unravel the mystery of North Korea’s strange new weapon, while Sunny tries her hardest not to fall in love with someone so obviously out of her league.

I loved this book! I know its new but I cant wait for the fandom. Its different from the other YA PNR books I've read lately, they're all the same. This one has a lot more charisma. I can't wait to read the second book.

In this first book of The Mouse series, the author gives the reader enough to time to explore Sunny’s world and the dynamics between her and her friends and family, before upping the pace significantly and keeping us on the edge of our seats as Sunny discovers her power. A great novel with a strong female lead - and I've already started on the next book in the series!

I actually loved this book, took me a while to get into it but once I did I couldn't put it down. And the ending was awesome. I love the characters, I thought they were a lot more colourful than the usual bland same-old sterotypes you get in PNR. I'm starting the next book in the series now, I'm so glad it's a series!

“The Mouse” is an engaging YA fantasy book by author Lauretta Hignett. Set on the coast of Australia, her heroine, Sunny O'Sullivan, is dealing with a number of matters that teenage girls often face: new town, new school, new friends, new stepmom, body image issues, bullying, and sexual harassment.

But Sunny O'Sullivan is not your average seventeen-year-old. She was born minutes after a lightning strike killed her mother. In the aftermath of that tragedy, Sunny was granted an incredible ability which lay dormant and untested until her teenage years: the power to become invisible, walk through walls, and fly. Frightened at first, Sunny soon realizes she can use this superpower for good. With her best friend, Annabel, covering her tracks when she's on a mission, Sunny struggles to keep her marvelous superpower secret from her family and friends.

When Sunny crosses paths with Hunter Katz, the handsome and charismatic intelligence agent gives her the code name “Mouse” and takes her under his wing. With his direction, Sunny succeeds in infiltrating military facilities in North Korea, rescuing a prisoner-of-war, and stealing classified information for the Western Allies. Complicating her clandestine superpower life, Sonny attempts to manage her flaming infatuation with Hunter Katz while also navigating the treacherous waters of high school. Subjected to bullying and sexual harassment, she is further humiliated by an accusation of lying. When Stephanie demands that her stepdaughter be exonerated and the guilty party punished, Sunny has a new appreciation of family ties. But her vindication is bittersweet when Sonny realizes that a friend's betrayal has put her life in jeopardy.

I really enjoyed “The Mouse,” the first book in a new YA series. It has an exciting, fast-moving plot and well-defined characters. I look forward to reading more of Sunny's superpower adventures.

Well-written and Fast Paced

NO SPOILERS EVER FROM MY REVIEWS!

I didn't expect to be wowed by this book, but here I sit- Absolutely Wowed. This novel is very layered, with true insights into humanity. The plot is solid, and I really like the fast pace of this book. This may be a fantasy novel, but it has much to say about the current state of our world that is so very important for people of all ages to recognize - and act upon to be heroes in the everyday life.

Sunny is gifted, not only with her supernatural abilities, but as a very good person that does her best. I think her character's honesty and integrity are well-balanced with normal insecurities that every teen faces. She's a very well-written, relatable character and is quite funny, a major bonus for the reader. Hunter is also a great character who demonstrates that the scars we accumulate in life can either be our doom or a reminder to be nothing like what has left these marks. He has a great many excellent qualities, and I think him a very good person to be with Sunny on her newfound path.

There's a lot of twists and turns, other characters that are complex and compelling, and the tone of this ingeniously wrought work is especially important for the plot movement. I read this book in one sitting, so I can attest that this book will very likely pull you in and you'll enjoy the ride, as I did. Definitely give this book a read. I think that you will
Like it, also.

An excellent YA story

This is one of those books which I have no hesitation on giving a five star rating to. I simply had to keep reading to see how it turned out.
The story follows a teenage girl who has developed a paranormal power and is learning to cope with it. Secrecy is paramount in her mind. She does not want to be considered a freak but wants to use her ability as a force for good. Like spiderman, she chooses to remain anonymous.
You'll find some teenage romance but as a YA book no sex - just longings.
Although this is book 1 of a series it is a complete story and you are not left with a cliffhanger at the end. You are left with an intriguing taste of more to follow though - yes - I will be buying the next book.
I found a few editing errors but these were very minor and didn't spoil the plot in any way. It's a rare book which does not have a few errors. US readers should be aware the book is written in Australian English so words like 'colour' are not spelling mistakes.
If you liked Twilight, the Spiderman and other superhero stories - get this book and read it before some enterprising tv/movie producer makes it into a film.

What an incredible story!

Sunny is seventeen and struggling with a new stepmom. The move to appease the stepMOMster hasn't been an easy one for Sunny, but she did it anyway. Four months in, and Sunny starts getting all tingling and disappearing.

There's a situation going on in North Korea and Sunny, being the sweetheart that she is, wants to help once she realizes her powers. Acting on a story she heard from one of her friends, Sunny goes to find someone to help her help others. Enter Hunter, the sexy, smoldering hot young agent.

Hignett takes the reader on a roller coaster of excitement, each turn exciting and gripping as the story unfolds. The story has just enough angst and sexual tension in it to make it a page-turner. Add to it all the fabulous twists and turns in the plot with the exquisite action scenes as Sunny discovers more about her gifts, and you will find yourself unable to put the book down!

An absolute gem of a book. Love, love, LOVED it!

A 5/5 Star YA read. Captivating sprightly story about friendships, trust, and saving the world. Sunny the Protagonist of this Story is the girl next door. Your best school friend, except she hosts a magical and mystical power. I found myself captivated by the descriptions of the Alternate magical and colorful world and joined the wild rides around the globe.
If you appreciate superpower heroes you will love this fast pace story. Bravo @Lauretta Hignett. I am downloading her sequel. I must know who is Hellix.

I had to stop

When you get the acronym wrong IN THE SAME SENTENCE as the words it represents... “ASIS stand for Australian Secret Intelligence Agency.” That landed like a 3-days dead fish.

This on top of being so Mary-Sue as to make a Disney Princess blush.

Also, the POV character really shouldn’t reveal information during her internal monologue that isn’t natural to the scene. Describing how her friends met each other - almost a decade before the POV character moved to town - felt awkward.

This was bad on toast.

Fun and well written

This book was fun light reading. For a while I feared it would turn into too much of a romance novel but it maintained a good balance. Considering the almost comic book like themes, I surprised by how well written and perceptive it was.
