And when there’s a brawl in a bar, well … she’s probably the one who caused it.
But now, the person voted least likely not to blow stuff up by her unit has been given another mission: explore the universe and forge bonds with new alien races in order to save earth from another invasion.
Backed by her ride or die crew - the only guys she’d trust on a mission such as this - and a scientist, because, well, science, Riot blasts off in a spaceship headed to distant galaxies, the fate of the planet resting on her shoulders.
I'm Jonathan, a husband, father, and writer. I write because that's what I was born to do and I love doing it. Because of the support from awesome people like you, I get to do it full-time.
Stop telling me how hardcore the sergeant is. Stop describing a scene and then instantly describing actions that don’t fit the scene. Stop writing a book like it’s a video game.
Oh, and stop trying to make every second of dialogue witty or clever. Nobody talks like that.
Apologies to those that enjoyed this book. I couldn't get far into it.
A marine Master-Sergeant who willingly leaves her weapon behind in hostile territory after being asked to take it. She then has to be saved by her hand-picked sniper, who has only one eye. I'm sure depth perception is unimportant in this role.
Then her squad is back together, after a significant time apart, and they train by adopting new, unknown and uninspected weapons, in a simulation against the supposedly toughest aliens in the known universe, without bothering to learn anything about their enemy's capabilities, and fail to address the fact that one of their number can't communicate via radio. Oh and these same aliens have been identified as potential allies.
Didn't finish. Near the end of chapter 14, Riot was so mean and nasty toward innocent and well meaning Deborah, it was almost as if Yanez was daring me to stop listening. I accepted.
Master Sergeant Gertrude (which she hates), Riot is a fit and feisty female in the male-dominated Marines, where she can more than hold her own against all comers, until a sneak attack - followed by desertion - of the heart, causes her a confidence setback. Luckily Riot has her Marine 'family' of Corporal Mohammad Vetash, 'Vet', Corporal Sean Rizzo and Corporal Chen Wang as her A-team to rally round her; each is flawed in his or her own way, but over four times stronger together than alone. Sent on a new mission - to the Planet Hoydren as Peace Envoys - the Marines, [now part of the SPEAR team], struggle to accept the initially unpopular science officer, Deborah 'Bubbles' Miller. Eternally optimistic and effervescent in personality, she grates on Riot's nerves; her sole 'claim to fame' is expertise in the superior weapons technology, communications and space-ship, captured in Earth's previous battles with deadly enemy, the Syndicate. Also aboard the Peace Envoy 1 [as their ship's loathsomely renamed], is Evonne – their AI/ship's control computer. She's sassy, efficient and complicated and wants nothing more than to have her own physical form and take part in missions in a more than vocal manner!
What does the mission entail – and what secret is their leader Captain Harlan hiding? Will the Brutes overcome the more peaceable Savage Trilords, under Queen Revna? Who/what are Ketrick and Vikta – and how do they affect the outcome of the battle with the Brutes and their evil ally Remus? Will the mission end in success or failure in Earth's search for a partner against the ultimate evil?
You'll be astounded by the answers to these and more questions in this block-buster of a great space adventure by Masters of the Universe of Fantasy, Jonathan Yanez and Justin Sloan – don't miss it!
To me Bring The Thunder fits the definition of a light novel quite well. If at a glance the book sounds like one you'll enjoy or hate then your gut is probably right. As for me that's a plus as not every science fiction or action story I read needs to be hard literature with tons of imagination and think-ons. This is closer to popcorn than say, Dune. Thus I say Light novel.
What makes it so good in this context? The characters!
Riot and her motley band of War Wolves are what make the book. The story is a pleasant enough idea but it's the characters that make the story worth reading. They're well crafted with just enough depth to match the novel's length. I hope more comes of these bastards whatever happens in the wider shared universe they are apart of, as I'd like to see them continue to evolve.
I rather liked this book. It was about a kick ass Marine (even tho there were several mistakes about rank, but then again, that's nitpicking) but the overall feel of the book was on point. I liked the entire bit about them weaving freaking dragons and magic into guns and space ships. The world building was on point, and like the author said, Riot is pretty much a female version of Deadpool (including the healing factor too minus looking like someone put out a fire on their face with a fork.) If you like books that have a ton of action and some spot on world building. Like Michael Jackson's last album....This is it.
I chose this rating because while I loved the action and the fact it has the Marine Corps. in it. The characters are flat and the story line is barely there. By the end of the first chapter you pretty much know everything that is going to happen. There is no suspense. I did get the second book because I'm hoping there is more meat to the plot. Keep the action coming.
The dialogue is poor and seems to be nothing more than a crutch to lurch the story from one bad right to the next. Aliens come and destroy our civilization as a test for us being invaded by an older meaner species???? High tech weapons inside swords and war-hammers??? I can't recommend this.
I've been reading Sci-fi for over 40 years and this was just Wickedly cool. Loved the Characters and the diversity of them. Thank you for not making them all perfect real-time types. I think that's the thing I liked most. You can definitely read this Series before the Syndicate Wars as I'm doing but that series is far off.
The characters in this book are all tough guys and girls, rough around the edges, each with some undesirable baggage, each struggling to be free, each unwilling to put up with B.S. Leaving Earth, they're sent ahead to make friends, find allies, and kick was. Alien conquistadors seize Earth, until a small group of rebels runs them off. (Another story). One small Marine force now recons the universe... Yanez really enjoys writing this tale, and parts are completely over-the-top, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This sci-fi Space Marine series is full of exciting alien technology, space battles, alien friends and for, and DRAGONS! How all this goes together is an amazing story with lots of action. Riot's squad of Marines has been through many battles on Earth and all are battle-scarred but still ready to lock and load. Wang is their medic, Vet is missing an eye, and their pilot Rizzo can't speak, and Debbie is the scientist/diplomat of the group. Join them and find out how they find allies for Earth's battle to remain free.
Not just space Marines, but the first space marines. Yep we get see it from the start. One lady marine with the charisma of Conan the warrior and the leadership of Thor. Able to inspire her team to almost any challenge and cause new races/aliens to ally with her cause. Wolf is an exciting edition to the sepukarian universes. You must read if only so you can smile and cheer today!
The best cover art I've ever seen! What a great cover! The author, Jonathan Yanez, is apparently a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Along with the iconic "Tarzan", Burroughs wrote a sci-fi series about adventures on Mars. But those books were written a century ago. In 2018, Yanez is late to the party by rewriting those. Still, gets three stars for the action. I love detailed action sequences.
It's a good story, only issue for me being that it's been done many times before. This version is good, it's well thought out and has moments of uniqueness No real surprises the story progresses as you would expect with good character development and back stories nicely explained. It's setup the series well
This is a fast paced sci-fi space Marine action adventure story that does a good job of introducing the main characters in what I am hoping will be a long multi book series. Now I'm going to search for book 2
Well I found this story to be pretty good and was entertaining. Sometimes I found myself doing an eye at the excessive number of bad guys but in true Deadpool style the problem was handled. Looks like it will be time to go start book 2.
Space dragons, I absolutely love it. Excellent writing and awesome characters. Really looking forward to the War Wolves (love the name) next book. Great job you guys!
I found this a bit of a different read which grabbed me and kept me reading throughout the novel. The characters and story are strong and lovable. Great Reading Everyone!!!
