Bridgertons #4.5

Romancing Mister Bridgerton: The 2nd Epilogue

Rate this book
We can't really say more without giving away a big, fat spoiler, but it turns out that Colin is a bit of a meddler, Hyacinth is more of a meddler, and the only time all of the Bridgertons stop talking at once is when Penelope has something really embarrassing to say. Hey, we never said it was easy to marry a Bridgerton, just that it was fun.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.

A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.

Chronologically, the story takes place after the Bridgerton brothers’ search for Eloise when she had run away in To Sir Phillip, With Love. Colin and Penelope are newlyweds, and aside from some sweet thoughts for each other, it is not really their second epilogue, but an additional episode to Eloise’s book, To Sir Phillip, With Love.

Colin and Penelope travel to Romney Hall for Eloise and Phillip’s wedding, where Penelope finally reveals her long-concealed identity to Eloise. It's totally unnecessarily and overcomplicated, but the story is also full of witty dialogues, so it is amusing after all.
“Eloise,” Penelope said, somewhat breathless from trying to shake off Hyacinth.
“Penelope.” But Eloise’s voice sounded curious.
“Eloise,” Hyacinth said, for no reason.
“Hyacinth.”
Penelope turned to her husband. “Colin.”
He looked amused. “Penelope. Hyacinth.”
Hyacinth grinned. “Colin.” And then: “Sir Phillip.”
“Ladies.” Sir Phillip, it seemed, favored brevity.
“Stop!” Eloise burst out. “What is going on?”
“A recitation of our Christian names, apparently,” Hyacinth said.

The way they told Eloise about the identity of Whistledown is underwhelming, but what am I supposed to expect really? You could always count on Hyacinth to ruin a plan.

My second fave epilogue so far. Fun read not that serious, much like the actual book.

I love Hyacinthe more and more. This one just cemented it for me. The greatest thing about these 2nd epilogues is that you get to see a great intimate look at the siblings together, which is what I love the most about them.

I do feel like there is a ginormous spoiler for book #5, though...

“I’ve already instructed the others to keep their mouths shut.”
“Even Hyacinth?” Penelope asked doubtfully.
“Especially Hyacinth.”
“Did you bribe her?” Violet asked. “Because it won’t work unless you bribe her.”
“Good Lord,” Colin muttered. “One would think I’d joined this family yesterday. Of course I bribed her.” He turned to Penelope. “No offense to recent additions.”

This Second Epilogue was extremely fun. It was focused on Eloise's wedding and the way Colin and Penelope were going to inform her about Lady Whistledown's identity. I loved how it showed the beautiful bond between the two friends but also the lovely life and mischief that the Bridgerton family brings.

“Who would have thought we’d marry within months of each other?” Penelope mused. “Weren’t we meant to be old crones together?”
“We can still be old crones,” Eloise replied gaily. “We shall simply be married old crones.”
“It will be grand.”
“Magnificent!”
“Stupendous!”
“We shall be leaders of crone fashion!”

It was sweet and funny, definitely worth reading for a little insight but, I think I should've read Eloise's book before this Epilogue.

“Eloise,” Penelope said, somewhat breathless from trying to shake off Hyacinth.
“Penelope.” But Eloise’s voice sounded curious. Which did not surprise Penelope; Eloise was no fool, and she was well aware that her brother’s normal modes of behavior did not include beatific smiles in her direction.
“Eloise,” Hyacinth said, for no reason Penelope could deduce.

Funny as always!

I somehow missed all the 2nd epilogues during my first read through, so, ah, here we go?

This was fun: Hyacinth remains a vengeful goddess; Colin a devious disaster; and I really enjoy the familial atmosphere: even as they squabble and stew and fight, the Bridgertons et al love one another—while they sometimes loathe one another!

While a fine, if very short, amusement, this story was way more about Eloise than Colin and Penelope. I was really hoping for more of their story, but this is not it, and I am left wanting for my favorite brother. Disappointed.

This is really just the best love story, start to end. And while all these books are stand-alones, it packs an even bigger punch if you've read the first three books and get a small taste of who Colin and Penelope are before their story, especially seeing what Penelope's gone through; suffering through embarrassing balls and moments that no poor girl should have to deal with. I ended the story with happy tears and completely, 100% satisfied with the journey and story that Colin and Penelope were given. It's simply wonderful, and I'm already feeling a bit sad that I'm now officially at the halfway point of the series. Four more Bridgerton's to go, but there will be many rereads coming up!

I am a fool for interstitial stories in general, but since everyone is reading/watching Bridgerton, and one may have to delay before the next installment, and one may be less than patient, they can save others by distracting one, however briefly. Tomorrow 's distraction is already booked.

5 star epilouge🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This 2nd epilouge is the funniest. I loved it. Hyacinth, the youngest Bridgerton, makes me laugh, especially when she is like 20 something years old and is supposed to be "ladylike." Honestly, this epilouge is more like an introduction to Eloise's story, To Sir Phillip, With Love. Honestly, I really think Colin and Penelope didn't really need a 2nd epilouge, but it was nice touch after their story. Such a funny epilouge!

I mean this could have been way better if we could see Eloise’s reaction when Penelope discloses her secret but ofc Hyacinth had to spoil that 🤡😂

Anyhow still a cute read/epilogue🫀

2.75 stars - I wasn’t particularly enamoured by Colin in the main book and this second epilogue made me like him even less!

I couldn’t believe how callous Colin was as he was happy to put his wife Penelope in distress for his own petty revenge back on his sister Eloise, (Penelope’s best friend) on her wedding day, no less. He appeared totally unaffected by Penelope’s discomfort at keeping secrets from Eloise and positively gleeful at the idea of upsetting his sister on her wedding.

Also it was so close to the events of the novel it didn’t really add much in terms of a HEA for Colin and Penelope. Perversely I think it detracted from my enjoyment of the full novel and gives away MAJOR spoilers for the next book, which I’ve yet to read - though this also happened with the previous 2nd epilogue spoiling the mystery in Colin and Penelope’s story, but at least that one was entertaining!

Personally I’d give this 2nd epilogue a miss if you want to like Colin more!

I wanted to see them years later

Although this is really a cute epilogue, it takes place before the ending of book 4 and after they reveal Lady Whistledown’s identity. They tell Eloise who she really is at her wedding. I wanted to see more about what happened with Colin and Penelope years later. We get a brief epilogue at the end of book 4 which reveals Colin’s success and that Penelope is pregnant, but I wanted to see more of their lives after. It was cute- and we got to know Hyancinth a little more, but that was it.
