‘It's time to start discovering your own unique embrace; the gift that only you can give to another tango dancer.’

Oliver Kent PhD is an author and teacher who passionately believes that there's no good reason to make another's life harder and that it's usually less painful to learn from someone else's mistakes. As such he's currently in the process of sharing his (often hard-won) experience through writing books that help make life a little easier. He also dances. A lot. He has published many books on the Tango as well as books Healing your Relationship with God, Finding Hope: Searching for Happiness, and two books of Buddhist quotations with accompanying reflections.

Some readers may react to the title of this book as a subject that doesn’t pertain to them – that they 1) don’t dance and 2) don’t know the first thing about dancing the Tango. The push away factor would be preventing general readers from Oliver’s magnetic humor and social interaction teachings in his immensely entertaining and informative book UNDERSTANDING THE MYSTERY OF THE EMBRACE: FILLING IN THE BLANK OF ARGENTINE TANGO Book 2

Not only is this a resource about the history of tango and the place of the dace in both the home base of Argentina and its growth in popularity in most cultures (thanks in part to the beauty of watching fine tango dancers in films and on the stage – and even in the ballroom or milonga), but Oliver’s concepts about the social aspects of the world’s most sensuous dance apply to human interaction in every part of life.

In his Preface he states the book’s purpose – ‘Tango dancers everywhere - Without the embrace, there is no tango. The tango embrace can exist between a couple pressed up against each other and it can be present between two dancers who aren't physically touching each other at all. It's a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. It takes some to zen-like state and allows others to feel the bliss of falling in love, over and over again. Yet, no matter how long they dance, for most, the tango embrace remains an elusive mystery. More lesson time is usually spent on the embrace in the first beginner tango class, than in any that come afterwards. Even after several years, everything you've been told in classes about the embrace will probably fit on the back of an envelope. “Hug your partner like you're greeting a friend.” “There's practice embrace, open embrace and closed embrace” “The man offers his left hand like this and the follower accepts” “Get in touch with your Inner Princess” So much is left unanswered. In fact, if you have yet to develop your embrace to the level you want, it likely has nothing to do with you. Given the lack of coherent information available it's a wonder we're still able to dance with each other, much less become Good Social dancers.

And that is the manner in which the ‘embraces’ about the tango are discussed, illustrated and taught. This is one fine entertaining book – and chances are after reading it you’ll be searching for a nearby Milonga – of sorts.

Having learnt Tango only as a Leader for the last few years, but recently began learning as a Follower, this book was great for helping me navigate all that other half of Tango which I had been missing, showing me a new perspective on the subject and deepening my understanding of "el abrazo tanguero" and what makes it "tick".
