Shoyo Hinata is out to prove that in volleyball you don't need to be tall to fly!
Ever since he saw the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals, Shoyo Hinata has been aiming to be the best volleyball player ever! Who says you need to be tall to play volleyball when you can jump higher than anyone else?
Hinata may not have been allowed to participate in the Miyagi Prefecture Rookie Camp, but he’s determined to learn something from watching on the sidelines as a ball boy! Meanwhile, thanks to the other players at the All-Japan Youth Camp, Kageyama starts to worry about how he interacts with his teammates! Then, with the Spring Tournament looming ever closer, Date Tech arrives at Karasuno for a practice game!
*Original Review 10/10/2019* Kageyama just needs a big hug. Also I loveeee kagehina so much. They're so good together. Hinata is always there to bring Kageyama back up.
Wow. Furudate didn't have to come through with that Hyakuzawa mini arc, but they really did. I also enjoyed a lot of the other character arcs throughout this volume, especially Kageyama's. It'll be exciting to see what other aspects of his game play were impacted by the Youth Camp.
P.S. Yu's new meme name is Yu "I take a dump after every meal" Nishinoya.
“Who cares if you’re a “king” or not? It doesn’t matter!” “No one ever said you’re not allowed to argue for what you want.”
4.75 stars - ahh definitely a favourite. While reading Kageyama’s breakdown is a little painful (I blame Atsumu’s goody-two-shoes comment particularly for it TvT) it was so sweet seeing how all of Karasuno reassured him - Hinata’s makeshift crown and the panel of Kagehina with Kageyama wearing a new crown was so adorable ahh
there has been this uproar with some people about how kageyama betrayed hinata by going from 'you can fly higher' to 'hoshiumi is better than hinata', and i absolutely detest it.
there's several reasons why:
a) it's actually been the other way around. it went from hoshiumi being better than hinata to telling hinata he can fly/jump higher.
kageyama is NOT bashing hinata at all. it's a simple fact. for both of them to have similar stature, hoshiumi is just simply better, going from blocking, receiving, serving.
b) hinata was NOT pressed about it the way some people are. was he irked at the comparison? sure, but in the same way that he is irked when somebody competitively challenges him. hinata is VERY WELL aware that he is lacking. in fact, i would say that ushijima drilling on him had been weighing on him more than the comment about hoshiumi (at THIS point of time. whatever happens w kamomedai later is just that, later)
c) let's please not forget that kageyama, throughout the ENTIRETY of the youth japan camp, kept observing hoshiumi for reference to check how he can make hinata better.
yeah, hoshiumi is better so he referenced a lot of it to make sure that HIS OWN SPIKER (hinata) will end up improving.
also the entirety of kageyama reclaiming the king title - PEAK. i love this aspect of his personality. he CAN be as selfish as he wants for he delivers; plus, as hinata said: if ya don't like it, jus' ignore it.
I was looking forward to seeing if Hinata has improved after his stint as a ball boy, but this volume is really about Kageyama. After the youth camp, he seems to be slipping back in old ways when in reality, he's frustrated by his teammates' skill level and want to push them to be better. He just sucks at communicating: if he offers suggestions instead of barking out orders like a superior, everyone would be more receptive. I feel like Hinata is merely enabling him instead of getting to the root of the problem.
Not much to say about this one. I don't feel like a lot happened, but I was glad to see Karasuno all back together in the second half of the volume!
Favorite moments:
-Hinata encouraging the Goliath guy. -Kageyama and Hinata breaking into a race as soon as they see each other. -The staredown Nishinoya gives Kageyama after being called out! (Pretty tough-looking for a short guy. 😉)
I remember buying this book for a ridiculous amount of money in Lahore and that alone made this the most precious thing I own to this day. (Or perhaps it was a normal price and I’m just too selfish with my money). I haven’t read ANY of the other mangas and I barely remember what happened in season one so I’ll be judging this with no context haha. 3.5 bc haikyuu>>
For a sports manga, I love the characters and their development, the story and the fun that it involves. This series will always be one of my favourites.
I didn't prepare to dive into Haikyu!! just yet, but having horrible side effects to an antibiotic I'm on left me deeply wanting some comfort characters and decided Hinata and the gang were the perfect ones to be with. <3
It's funny because Kageyama has never been my favorite character. However, while he still won't be my favorite character (#TeamHinataForLife), I CAN say that this volume really stirred the love for Kageyama. He has undergone SO much growth since we first met him.
In fact, I would say that Kageyama AND Hinata have reached a point where there is this huge shift in their growth and who they are and will be as volleyball players. Both of them demonstrated a changed mindset even if it was in the smallest of ways.
I LOVED how Hinata's "chewing out" was like encouragement during the training camp. He is absolutely amazing! Everything about this volume concerning him just made me love him even more. <3 <3 <3 <3
I LOVEDDDDD all those first years altogether! Honestly, it has been one of my favorite things in seeing them have friendships between one another but also be rivals on opposing teams. They all are just awesome and can't wait to see them altogether again! <3
I also really loved how the Karasuno team came together at the end. They have always been a team that comes together, but this is another pivotal moment where Karasuno has become even stronger and the trust within one another even deeper. Though I had to laugh at how Kageyama says things because he is definitely a little too blunt even though he doesn't mean it is always rudely.
The ending is so so so good and just so many small things I adored about this volume!
hinata being gradually joined by fellow himbo koganegawa in a Staring-Kunimi-Down Party is sincerely the funniest shit I’ve experienced in a good two years (++ really enjoyed hyakuzawa’s mini-arc here, thought he was lowk vanilla in the anime but rn he is now yet another baby under my legal care, protected regardless of what it may cost me. typical honestly)
not kunimi being the type of person with the type of priorities to have an explicit list of his least favorite phrases i love my smol judgmental cranky lazy-as-shit possessed-by-darkness potted plant child
shirabu calling goshiki a bowl-cut brat while he himself is also a bowl-cut brat absolute 24k gold
not koganegawa looking at his new phone contacts & being the happiest about the ✨Friends He Made Along The Way✨ i love him & everything he stands for
honestly kags needs hinata on such a deep level like he, being the professional kage-handler he is, was the one who diffused the quarrel during the date game so unintentionally well + gave the other karasubois what they could resonate with esp when there was so much tension—excited to get more growth from kags on this end (especially as his teammates are already doing their evolving from being challenged by him) & see him become more emotionally sensitive & attuned to team-playing (e.g., oikawa) more than he already has fehee

Awww my baby is on the cover and all grown up! I'll always be sticking to my favorite, no matter what.
I have to admit that I got worried when he seems to be back to his "old self", but then I realized (and was reminded) that he has always been "the king" and arrogant with Hinata. And that only made the two of them better. And friends.
But then, when you think about it, it's not like he's being arrogant. Maybe because he just wants to break the limits that his hitters are putting on themselves. Boom, Kageyama lodi forever!
Makes you reflect yet again. Will being with these "arrogant" people make us better? Or worse?
But then (again), people don't always receive feedback in the same way (hard lesson when I first became a team lead). Adaptation, adaptation!
After returning from their respective training camps, Kageyama and Hinata are playing practice matches against Date Tech to show off their newly acquired skills. Thanks to everybody's half-hearted efforts- a new king of the court has been risen!
I still love this series, but I am not sure I love the shift in Kageyama's character right now. I understand where it's coming from, but at the same time, I'm not sure I am on board with it. Time will tell.
Kageyama is learning, albeit poorly, to ask for things he needs from the team. His fear of being shut out by his teammates are well founded. Hinata has with a few short phrases erased the negative vibes placed on the nickname "King of the Court".
