魔王城でおやすみ [Maō-jō de Oyasumi] #2

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, Vol. 2

Rate this book
A captured princess just wants a good night’s sleep! Shhh…

Kidnapped by the Demon King and imprisoned in his castle, Princess Syalis is…bored.

While waiting to be rescued, Princess Syalis makes herself at home by commandeering a bathtub, befriending (sort of) a cute demon girl and participating in a castle fitness challenge. Her plots to get some shut-eye include stealing ice from Ice Demons to cool off on a hot summer night, attempting to make her own waterbed, toying with magic spells and provoking an enchanted flower into releasing a soporific. And then the nightmares begin…

I just love this so much. The premise just delivers more and more brilliant little stories, and Syalis is an adorable little bastard. The art is really brilliant too, with lots of RPG inspired interior and creature designs that beam with creativity. It's a joyful read, and genuinely hilarious with laughs and smiles in every chapter.

So cute!
I understand the princess and her want for the perfect sleep. I totally want that bath nap. Its still ridiculous fun and just so enjoyable. Those Eggplant Seals are precious and would make for good cuddles. Also who wouldnt want nightmare bears that steal your bad dreams for purification.

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, Vol. 2 continues to be one of the silliest and heart-crushingly adorable stories that I've read in a long time. Kumanomata knows exactly how to keep the reader's attention. The story is laid out in highly entertaining, short & episodic chapters that are stupidly fun & easy to read. Everything, from the character designs to the backgrounds, are charmingly whimsical. This is also genuinely funny and the comedic timing in this series is fantastic. I intend to pick up the next volumes soon.

»»» A compra:
Adquirido nuns saldos online puramente pela capa e premissa. Sem edição em português.

»»» A aventura:

Still very amusing, but the joke wears a bit thin. Each episode basically has the same story in which the kidnapped princess in the Demon Castle tries to fall asleep or has some problem related to sleep, and she callously hurts or kills demons in her quest to fulfill her desires. The second volume is pretty much the same as the first, which is its charm and its downfall. It can't stay very funny very long in my opinion.

I just love this manga series! I always go to this series if I need a laugh. This volume was just as good as the first, and I highly recommend it to readers with short attention spans who are looking for a lighthearted read.

Just like with the first, I absolutely loved this one! The author/illustrator is so creative to think of SO many ways that our precious princess can achieve a better night's sleep :) I can't wait to see what the third one has in store!

I still think this is fun and adorable but there is no main plot or end in sight. I can definitely see myself coming back to this when I need a dose of lighthearted fun!

If am I being honest, I didn't enjoy this volume quite as much as the first one. The art is still good and the stories are still creative. The problem, to me at least, lies with Princess Syalis. She seems less sympathetic in several of these stories than she was previously.

In volume 1, it is easy to write off her behavior as being side-effects of sleep-deprivation. She is too tired to be fully aware of her actions. So if she were better rested, then she wouldn't being killing demons so she can use their bodies as sleep aids. That doesn't appear to be the case in some of the volume two stories.

There are two stories in particular where this stands out. The first of these is the story that introduces Harpy. This is a female soldier in Demon King Twilight's army who has been rotated out of active duty so she can take a break in the Demon Castle. So she decides to spend her leave time befriending Princess Syalis. Harpy appears just as benign as the other demons, but friendlier because she is actively trying to become Syalis's friend.

Princess Syalis is unresponsive to Harpy's entreaties until she notices how Harpy's feathers would upgrade her current comforter. So she agrees to be Harpy's friend and even to have a sleepover in her cell, just so that she can sleep on Harpy's feathers. She even tells poor Harpy to be quiet so she can sleep. Harpy is, of course, heart-broken that Syalis only "wants her for her body".

Yes, I know that is the punchline for the joke, but the illustration of seeing Harpy so upset spoils the joke for me. I don't see the Princess's antics in this chapter to be Comedic Sociopathy in this case.

The second story line I want to point out is the nightmare one. In a nutshell, Syalis discovers that everyone in the castle has nightmares about her every night. She recognizes this and then immediately dismisses it as unimportant so long as she, herself, is not having nightmares. Stories like these make one question, who is the real demon here?

Fortunately, these are more of an exception to the rule. The other stories are not like this. For instance, there is a story that has two layers to it. 1.) Demon King Twilight is holding council with his generals about the progression of Hero Dawner's quest, and their future actions. 2.) Princess Syalis spilled fruit juice on her bed sheets and wonders how to clean them.

The Demon Castle Council lists the magic items they plan to secretly give Dawner and the machines they will send against him to make his quest challenging-but-doable. While this occurs like a voice-over, Syalis finds each item and ruins them all in the process of cleaning the mess she made, unaware of how priceless and important each item is. The dramatic irony here is great, and the expressions of the Demon Castle Council when they see the Princess's good work is priceless.

Then there are the cases where Syalis makes a mistake with a magic hourglass. It doesn't shrink her as much as make her younger. This leads to a "fawn over the small child" event, which annoys her. There is also the case of her getting sleep paralysis, and her loyal teddy bear demons cause her much comedic embarrassment in their attempts to help her.
So not everything goes Syalis's way all the time, which helps to balance out the other chapters.

The quality of the artwork continues. It is cute and comical, and so it is perfect for most of these stories. Even the one about the nightmares has its cute moments, particularly how Syalis resolves the nightmare problem. It is just those moments of unintentionally unsympathetic that bother me.

Trickster Eric Novels gives "Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle volume 2" a B

It's still really cute but I already feel bad for the demons. I'm questioning why they kidnapped her, and at this point there's a question of if they're even sort of the bad guys because they're trying to help the hero have a successful journey to come rescue her. All the characters are just too cute, and I like how things are continuing on. I'll say it's great to read before bed because all the talk about a good night's sleep really makes me want to snuggle in lol

Still delightfully absurd and I love the stylistic references to a long lineage of RPGs, video games, and Table Tops. I want a pile of Teddy Demons to make a bed of their brushed fur... It looks amazingly comfortable. #SpoilerAlert ~ I'm guessing our fair princess doesn't get a good night's sleep for a few more volumes. Even though Harpy's wings looked like the best, downy, comforter ever!

The princess makes her own bathtub from a rocket turtle shell, uses eggplant seals for air conditioning, and walls off an annoying demon girl with teddy demons.

This is cute, but the storylines are too short to really get me hooked. Even though I'll miss the exploits of the teddy demons, this is where I'm parting ways with this series. I need a bit more story in my books.

Getting more into the Princesses adventures of finding the best way to get some sleep and unintentionally creating terror for all the demons around her. Some of the chapters were in the anime but not as many as in volume one. So I would still recommend if you love the anime, may have finished it or watched many clips and just want more.

picked up for my daughter after watching the anime

My daughter (current age 7) enjoyed the anime and so I saw the manga was available and picked up a few volumes. She read the first three in a single sitting and likely will finish the rest at a similar rate.
It’s a cute, goofy series that I am curious to know how they made to it 22 volumes at the time of this review.

Una entrega muy bonita... tiene más información que la serie animada y es muy divertida de leer.

A pesar de haber visto la serie animada es entretenida y ver los extras e información de cada demonio es interesante

Another enjoyable volume. Her trying to do sports! The Night Bears! And the Antenna Silkworm are all super cute. However, her doing the laundry was a scream. Loved that chapter.
