He’ll never be able to swim again—a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog! Years later, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…

Now that they’ve reached the New World, Luffy and his Straw Hat crew are closer than ever to reaching their goal, and their adversaries are not happy about it. Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

This trio of volumes wraps up Punk Hazard Arc and begins what I think was the longest One Piece arc up to this point: Dressrosa. It is probably appropriate that Dressrosa is so long, though, because not only is Donquixote Doflamingo someone who successfully pulled off the kind of coup Sir Crocodile tried to do in Alabasta…he’s the first villain who’s actually done his homework on the Straw Hats and is prepared for their arrival!

The ending of Punk Hazard is pretty heart-warming. The G-5 navy guys keep trying to draw literal lines in the sand to maintain their moral high ground over the pirates…but these are no match for the deliciousness of Sanji’s cooking and the insistence of the former crack-babies that Straw Hats are the true heroes of this situation:

The crew then sail off with Trafalgar Law to fulfill the terms of their alliance: Helping him take down Doflamingo. Law is secretly hoping he won’t have to follow through on the “and maybe we’ll get to fight an Emperor of the Sea” bit he pitched to Luffy. If Doffy does in fact step down as a Warlord and king of Dressrosa in exchange for Caesar (the mad scientist who makes it possible to grow the artificial devil fruits Doffy is selling to said Emperor) then this can all end peacefully. That, of course, is not what happens!

On the phone (or transponder snail, rather) Doflamingo had told Luffy that he has something he wants. Luffy, of course, immediately jumps to the conclusion that this must mean some really delicious meat! But no – the thing that’s being offered as a prize in the coliseum is . Doffy assumes this will tempt Luffy to enter the competition (thus isolating him from his crew) because – besides Luffy just LOVING a good fight – he won’t want to see that fall into the wrong hands! And, when we see Sanji approached by a beautiful lady pleading for his assistance the second he’s away from his crewmates…an astute reader will start to suspect that Doffy knows something about the other Straw Hats’ weaknesses as well!

DoflamingoViola
Left: Doflamingo. Right: Viola

It initially seems like Doffy’s plan is going great. Luffy is so bad at stealth that his idea of a disguise is to put on a fake beard but leave on his crew’s namesake straw hat…then almost forget to give a pseudonym, so that he ends up fighting under the name “Lucy”! However Doflamingo under-estimates just how charismatic as well as strong Luffy is, And I’m so proud of my boy Sanji! While Doflamingo did correctly identify him as a hopeless simp, Sanji, alongside Robin, is one of the Straw Hats with the best degree of spy-craft. He’s also both sincere in his admiration for women and a surprisingly good (given the simp thing) judge of character. While Luffy is very trusting of people he feels are basically decent, Sanji’s gift is more situational, helping him judge “is this person lying RIGHT NOW, and why?” We saw that in Water Seven, where he was the one who most distrusted Robin’s attempts to push them away by acting like a cold-hearted turn-coat, immediately suspecting that someone was blackmailing or manipulating her. Conversely, while he could not effectively fight Khalifa or Monet (because he’d rather die than hit a woman), he didn’t try to argue that they were just poor little things being controlled by someone else. No, those two were fully voluntary participants in the villainy that was happening, and Sanji was perfectly OK with letting Nami and Zoro, respectively, take over fighting them!

The way this plays out is here is:

Dressrosa initially strikes many people as a whimsical, happy place because, along with people, there are a bunch of living toys wandering around. The backstory on this is VERY dark, though…which you might start to guess as soon as you notice one of them is a reference to the one-legged tin soldier from the Hans Christian Anderson story that is itself one of those ‘WTF did I just read, and why is this for kids?’ fairy tales! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ste...

Queerness in One Piece, part 6
Nami, again
So, remember how I mentioned that the only person Nami has had an unambigous “wow, how sexy!” reaction to is Khalifa, the female CP9 agent who dresses like a BDSM librarian? That is still true up to this point in the story. Now we get this exchange, regarding Nami allowing Tashigi to take charge of the children from Punk Hazard instead of the Straw Hats returning them:
“Usopp: Yeah, we’d probably just get blamed for kidnapping them ourselves…
Nami: True, plus I have a weakness for powerful stares from lady sailors.”

Usopp is somewhat puzzled. Then there’s an image of Bellemere, Nami’s adoptive mom with her distinctive side-shaved hair, plaid shirt, and cigarette…which I’m not sure is what HE’S thinking (because he remembers Bellemere just after that panel) or what NAMI’S thinking.
Nami continues: “If you want to be saved, a strong but gentle lady sailor is the best!”
So, like, plausible deniability, but also…paging Dr. Freud! (Well, he wouldn’t be much use here, probably. But you get what I mean!)

Nami and Robin?
To preface this bit, one thing we know about the Thousand Sunny is that Franky designed it – and keeps tweaking it – to fully match the Straw Hats’ needs and preferences. For example, the standard captain’s cabin is missing because Luffy hates being alone…but there’s a gym in the crow’s nest so the introverted Zoro can work out in peace (while also doing his protective 1st mate thing by keeping an eye out for danger). And we’ve seen that the boys’ sleeping quarters have hanging twin-size bunks.
As the crew departs Punk Hazard, we cut to a single panel of the girls’ room. Which reveals that they have ONE king-sized bed. (Momonosuke currently dozing between them like a kid who had a nightmare and is being comforted by his parents). Just…gonna leave that there, for now, as Oda did! So make of it what you will.

Luffy’s continued aroace vibes
We saw earlier proof that Luffy is immune to the charms of the most beautiful woman in the world. There’s a scene in the coliseum that feels rather like Oda illustrating that Luffy’s not interested in men either. Because this is where we meet Cavendish, a stylish pirate with flowing golden locks who makes the lady coliseum workers faint, at least one of the male gladiators exclaim “He’s so byootiful!” with heart eyes, and just about everyone wish they could have the grace of his attention. Cavendish starts talking to Luffy (I mean ‘Lucy’, haha)…and then gets VERY annoyed to discover the latter has just wandered off to continue picking out armor because he does not care about the shojo sparkles thing that is happening right now!
Cavendish

The fashion (preview)
Can I just say I kinda love Franky’s schoolgirl pigtails at the start of Dressrosa? He’s been very experimental with his hair post-timeskip, and he’s always been very secure in being masculine-but-emotional, so this fits. See below in the fake beard Luffy selected as part of everyone’s ‘disguise’.
PigtailFranky
Of course, with a villain who dresses like Doflamingo…it’s only fitting that everyone’s fashion gets stepped up a notch! But maybe I’ll talk about that more at the end – because there’s a pair of characters who haven’t been (re)introduced yet who NEED to be part of that discussion.

One quibble…
I mentioned earlier that I don’t feel like the manga for ‘One Piece’ has too much gratuitous fan-service overall…but this section kinda does. I’d be a hypocrite to complain about Rebecca’s gladiator outfit (Look, Princess Leia’s metal bikini was a formative image for me as well as Oda, OK?) But I will question why, when Robin gets “Gullivered” by little people, they have to be climbing around inside her clothes! Also, WTF is up with Señor Pink’s scantily clad groupies? Why are they there, and HOW are they at all into this man? (Though maybe the fact that some people think this literal baby man is the pinnacle of masculinity is commentary? IDK, more on that later…)

This omnibus wraps up the conclusion of the Punk Hazard arc which was ok but not the greatest story arc for me (Caesar Clown was bloody annoying). What it did well though was set up the next arc which is Dress Rosa. The Dress Rosa arc which starts in Volume 71 is a crazy, unpredictable story arc that has me completely hooked. It has a lot of parallels with the storyline for the Alabaster arc but does it so much better. Doflamingo is a great villain, not just because of his powers or ruthlessness but more so for his meticulous planning and mysterious past.

These three volumes were surprisingly good. I really liked the new characters that were introduced and Dressrossa is a very interesting place to explore, especially with the toys and dwarfs and all.

The ending of Punk Hazard was also very entertaining because Doflamingo is always entertaining (even if he's an evil bastard). I really liked the dynamic between Luffy and Law at the end of it and I'm excited to get more of it.

Overall, three very compelling volumes that I really liked. They aren't outstanding as some of Marineford ones or the Water 7 volumes but still amazing so I think it's fair to give them 5 stars.

SPOILERS will follow!

Okay so let's start with the conclusion of Punk Hazard. It was very shocking when Doflamingo himself came there because he's a menace and I genuinely got scared for the lives of our characters. Thankfully, they disappeared soon enough, but damn, Doffy almost killed Smokey and I was not happy about that. I like Smokey, he's very entertaining and he gets along well with the Straw hat crew so I don't want to see him die. And then Aokiji showed up and I lost it because he's my favorite admiral (he's the only one who isn't rotten in his core) and then he fought Doffy which was just amazing.

And then we get to Dressrossa and we have to talk about Luffy here. I don't think it would be so wrong for a character to enter a tournament under a false name and covering up their identity but this is Luffy we're talking about here. He is unable to stay hidden and it's a stupid idea for him to do it because everyone will find out who he is. And they did. Also Luffy riding the bull and then being angry when the bull got smashed into the ground is just such a Luffy thing to do. I loved it.

I also loved the other contestants in the tournament. Cavendish seems interesting and Bartholomeu is a menace but it's so funny that he is a fan of Luffy's. And I laughed so hard when he had no balls to face him. I really like Rebecca and I think that the soldier toy might have been her real father, the dude that wants to kill Luffy because he hates Garp is fine and I think Bellamy is very interesting. I'm not sure if he's completely evil because he got a bit soft when Luffy cheered for him.

As for the other crew members... I love how Zoro is unable to follow directions even where the one giving them is on his shoulder and Usopp lying his way out of something is such a Usopp thing to do and he just got himself in some complicated shit because of it. Also I love how Sanji makes Violet help him because he refuses to believe she's evil.

Just pure, undiluted FUN.

This is gearing up to be one of my favourite arcs.

Oda really shines through sometimes and this is one of those arcs where you see him working his magic.

I love the way he sets up story threads by dropping hints in dialogue or character reactions. He leaves something that tells you there is more but does not explain instantly, cultivating an atmosphere of mystery and anticipation. It works particularly well here, with all the intrigues he sets up at the start (Doflamingo's backstory, the mysterious statue, Momonosuke, Rebecca and the toy, mysterious blind man, the dwarves' story, Law's motivation...) whetting my interest for what is to come.

And the story in this arc... So diverse and colourful, seemingly divergent at first but all converging into the main plot. We have Zoro chasing a fairy, Robin discovering dwarves, living toys, a hostage rescue operation, a hostage swapping operation, a tournament, the government suddennly appearing, Cipher pol... Everyone doing their own thing with light, frivolous and highly colourful plots everywhere but, in parallel, the hint of hidden depth and a greater story.

It is just unadulterated FUN and excitement.

Shoutout at the way Doflamingo is presented too: he is depicted as a terrible villain but still humanised too with the showcase of how much he cares for his family and how much they care for him.

All in all, LOVED it!

Series: One Piece #70-72
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

This collection finishes the Punk Hazard arc and moves into the Dressrosa arc. The Straw Hats and Law defeat and capture Caesar at Punk Hazard. They then head to Dressrosa to continue their plan of defeating Doflamingo and stopping his production of Smile. Law’s plan doesn’t go as expected though when Doflamingo sets him up and the Navy arrives. During all this we have Luffy entering a gladiator tournament to win the Flame-Flame fruit which was Ace’s, Robin and Usopp being befriending a race of little people called Tontattas, Zolo chasing after his stolen sword, Sanji being mesmerized by a beautiful woman called Violet, and Franky making a new friend who is a toy soldier.

So much happens in these three volumes. Dressrosa is a fascinating and disturbing island. The fact that toys were former humans but no one remembers them is sad. The whole history of this island is crazy and Doflamingo really is a cruel leader who needs to be taken down. I also completely forgot about the coliseum part of this arc and am really enjoying revisiting it. Also, I forgot this is where you meet Man-Eating Bartolomeo and he is one of my favorite characters because he is just so fun. I can’t wait to read more of this arc and see what else I have forgotten.

Ok I know I give One Piece 5 stars a lot but hear me out!!

SPOILERS

First of all, the end of Punk Hazard with Aokiji coming in full-on SLAY... the fact they hint he’s onto something? If you know, you know. Love it.

The bond between Law and the Straw Hats is literal gold. And the Colosseum... could it even get any better?! Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi appearing, and then Luffy with his comedic streak and lovable attitude entering the competition... he is so powerful yet utterly adorable. I can't.

The Straw Hats being a total mess as usual especially loved the Zoro and Franky reunite scene.

And of course that plot twist!! Doflamingo and the Fujitora reveal, with the "resigning from Warlord" thing being a total farce... 🤯

FREAKING PEAK.

This is a very dense, very interesting volume. Punk Hazard is over, and now a new arc begins.

Lots of good moments and great new and returning characters, Oda is having a lot of fun with the tornament... but the plot outside of it is a bit mixed, for now. Law is great, Doflaming is interesting, but the rest of the crew's plot can be a bit too boring at times. That said, most of it has been buildup, and there are a lot of interesting things in motion for most of them (and Usopp in particular)

Still worth reading for the good parts, but this is the nearest OP was to a 3 star review to me since Skypea.

Really strong, which I can't believe I'm saying since I the anime adaptation made me drop One Piece for a good few years. So far, I feel none of the pacing issue I had before and, if anything, feel like this is moving at a fantastic speed, far quicker than Punk Hazard.

I also really like that each of the threads being set up for our separated Straw Hats are all entertaining and feel unique to this arc, and are a more than just fight pairings.

I'm excited to finally be able to say I'm enjoying Dressrosa. Long may it continue.

This compilation features the usual wrap up and setup of a new arc. After the events of Punk Hazard, the Straw Hats Crew heads to Deadrossa for another adventure. The start of Deadrossa adds a bit more mystery than usual. They find the island is populated by living toys who live along side humans. The Omnibus hits you pretty early and unfolds pretty well from there.

Oda's mastery over weaving a story that one can stay glued to, remains unmatched. These volumes are no different from the expectations that were set over the entire course of about 700 chapters so far. I'm happy to follow through the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy. While the anime and manga are already closing in at the end, it doesn't hurt to read the build up that these volumes have.

A ver.

The beginning of the long Dressrosa arc and Doflamingo and a continuation of the events set in motion at Punk Hazard. The events covered in this omnibus kind of feel like when you're playing a roleplaying game and the party decides to split up and then the DM has to say 'Okay hang on, I'll get to you in a sec, let's play out Luffy's scenario for a bit first and then we'll cut to Zoro and then to Nami then to....', you get it. It's not bad, just feels a bit scrambled for a bit. So far not too emotional or crazy a ride, but it's definitely ramping up.

Also in general the ladies' outfits in OP are...questionable but uhhhhh.....there were some uncomfortable moments for me in this one with

With the end of the current story we go straight to a new one filled with intriguing enemies and sad back stories, the usual One Piece we all love. Oda for sure knows how to hit the heart stings. The fan service however is getting frustrating and ridiculous.

This is my stand-in review for all of the Dressrosa Arc.

Long, arduous at points, but a true return to form for One Piece after a dry spell. It was like Oda needed to recapture his mojo.
