In the sequel series to Tokyo Ghoul, Haise Sasaki has been tasked with teaching his special squad of half-ghouls how to be outstanding Investigators, but this is complicated by the troublesome personalities of his subordinates and his own uncertain grasp of his Ghoul powers. Will he and the members of his squad become heroes or monsters, taken out by the other squads in the Commission of Counter Ghoul...?!

WOW! Having never read a series by Sui Ishida before this one I see this is his strength... leading us to the water and then trying to drown us with sudden plot twists! And boy were they mega huge!! What happens to Kanae, the Rose servant that I root for is massive and creepy and GAH! I don't know if I love it or hate it, but it was a wild ride and I don't regret a moment of it... we get more back history of him as well that I appreciated.

Shu is back to normal now... he wants to awaken Haise to himself but that changes as his own life takes a drastic turn. We see that Kanae isn't his only servant that loves him to death and I admit I was affected by the love they hold for him. Haise's story is perhaps the most anti-climatic... perhaps because I don't have the previous series to go on, but I do like that he goes to the one who he knows is a ghoul... not to capture him but to get answers. I admit I was totally shocked by the end and that made up for my previous disenchantment.

The tension was really high in this volume... probably because we are seeing the Rose family being stripped of their ability to exist. I quite like Shu and want to see him continue... And Haise is just breaking down (and so swiftly) and that is hard to watch as he's normally an upbeat go-get'em character. But it's Kanae that really made me all tense!! GAH! Who is that person?! Why did they do that to his face?! How does it work? (Do I really want to know?! Probably not!) The battles though really upped the ante too as investigators I don't really like (who are as bad as the ghouls) get into some sticky situations!!

While I think Haise's sudden break down is well, sudden, it was also coming the whole time. He was able to maintain a mental break because he didn't know enough to be more than uncomfortable. Once he realizes he actually has access to the truth and can guess what that truth is... he's pretty freaked out! But I really felt for Shu... seeing his world dissolve, right when he was able to rejoin it... pretty tough for him and I find myself wanting both of these characters to somehow continue to co-exist. I do appreciate understanding what RE means and where it came from!! (Note: the scenes at the beginning of the volume!)

Okay... the art... My favorite part and with a favorite series the rating rarely changes... so why is this the only aspect of the volume that I was a little disappointed in... Well I was still confused at times what is happening and this time with the superior twists, plot and coming together of the story that Sui Ishida has been building, I realize that my confusion stems from the art and the conversation bubbles rather than me just not getting it.

It's hard to come back to the series and not quite remember who is who and then there are no names! The CCG people can also run together a little so I'm confused until they express themselves through some action. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Sui Ishida's art but keep rooting me back into the story so I'm not confused at first.

This is considered a horror manga and finally I see why in this volume... its a little gruesome but if you want mega-story, you want to experience the lives of ghouls, supernatural beings, then you NEED Tokyo Ghoul: RE (vol. 5) in your life! Haise, Shu, Kanae and many others give us characters to root for and arcs that take you on wild rides...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

This is the prime example of what I love about Tokyo Ghoul manga.
Intense, action-packed, so many feelings, vivid artwork, great character dynamics and multi-dimensional characters.
Special shoutout to Tsuskiyama's arc, Kanae, Haise, Matsumae and

Tokyo Ghoul: re is the only story with memory loss as major trope that I actually like. Usually I stay as far away from it as possible, but in this manga the trope works wondrefully. I'm enjoying Haise-Kaneki-? a lot.

One thing I'm curious about, am I the only one who's rooting for ghouls? I know the whole series is called Tokyo Ghoul, I'm kinda supposed to like them, right?? These lovely human-eating being. But the investigators are mostly despicable and I don't agree with their methods 95% of the time, and yet they dare to ooze some moral superiority over ghouls (who aren't saints either, of course). I don't like ghoul investigators. The only time I was on their side was during the Auction arc.

Loved this volume.
The actual rating is 4.5 stars.

Eletricità palpabile fino all'ultimo.

I wasn’t expect an all out fight. In this Shu’s family is discovered of being a bunch of ghouls so there’s a big fight. Sen/Bandage girl got Kanae and made him crazy…er, crazier. There’s a really great seen between Akira and Kaneki where she hugs him. I’m pretty sure Amon’s out there somewhere. Lots of people die, including Hairu who was really cute. Then a random monster came at the end. Overall it wasn’t the best fight ever but I still enjoyed it.

This volume was the first slay in :re! I truly wasn’t expecting it to be considering I was already bitching about the volume’s cover before reading it because (as I predicted!) it’s completely irrelevant to the contents of the volume. Regardless, this volume was FANTASTIC.

First of all, we have Shu continuing to be my twin when it comes to Kaneki. Touka and Nishio are all like “you’re just selfish trying to have him gain his memory back” cuando una cosa no tiene que ver con la otra! There’s nothing inherently wrong with Shu wanting Sasaki to regain his memories. I would personally say that just letting Sasaki live his life all lalala when he’s literally killing his own kind is another mode of torture. It’s not that it’ll be a nice little walk in the park for him to regain his memories (it won’t be), but he’s trapped in a different kind of hell. Living to destroy that which you are is just another way of destroying yourself.

Regardless, I love how important Shu has been in the last couple volumes. He was one of my faves from the OG series, so I’m glad :re has brought me background information about him. It’s very sweet to see that he was actually brought up in a loving and caring home. His father clearly adores him, and so do the other ghouls who served his family. Seeing him through their eyes, it was clear why they would risk it all for him 💖

I have to say, though, that what the bandage ghoul (Eto?) did to Kanae is deranged 💀 It’s creepy as hell, and I don’t really get that ghoul’s intentions quite yet. But she certainly made Kanae stronger—in a twisted way—and clarified for him how he truly feels about Shu. Seeing Kanae go after Sasaki without any mercy was vindicating. Do what your heart truly desires, Kanae 🙏🏻 Be true to yourself!

The fights in this volume also genuinely had me like this 😱 Ultimately, a lot of characters I don’t give a shit about were the ones being harmed / killed, but I can appreciate that there were definitely some creative ways that happened in this volume. Using Kijima’s own quinque to split him in half? That was METAL AS HELL. The way Milo kept fighting while being severed in half? Incredible! The way one of the doves heartlessly gouged the eyes of Matsumae? It was all just raw as fuck. I have to respect it! I have to give props when they’re due. The doves and ghouls came ready to fight till their last breath, and I’m all for it!

Finally, I’m glad that in this volume Sasaki is finally starting to realize he does want his memory back. He’s starting to see that him not having his memories is a method of control and vulnerability. I’m just mad that Shu chickens out at the end of this volume about actually sharing information with him 🙄 Now that it’s on Sasaki’s terms you don’t want to cooperate? COME OOOON! 🤦🏻‍♀️

i dont know why i couldnt process the idea that kanae could be a woman. there a huge theme of people hiding their true gender or transitioning. i dont know if kanae was concealing his original gender in the same way mutsuki is or the big madame, but he seems more accepting of his womanhood than others? was it for means of protection or has kanae always been a woman and ive just never noticed until it was explicitly spelt out for me

Warnings: physical violence, gun violence, body horror, gore, torture (mutilation), cannibalism

Delivering another emotional and action-packed arc, this volume has the Tsukiyama family in the crosshairs of the CCG. While Shuu has been trying to get Kaneki's memories back, he visits :Re to ask for Touka's help, but she reprimands him saying that he isn't really doing it for Kaneki. Haise has been looking into his past, and after the undercover operation with the Quinxes, he has realized that he was known to the ghouls as Eyepatch and finds Amon's rough reports; he also realizes that the man approaching him to strike a friendship (Shuu, but he doesn't know it) may know Kaneki. Meanwhile, the CCG is onto the Tsukiyamas and Shuu's father engineers his son's escape while staying behind to provide distraction. Shuu soon realizes the depth of devotion his family has instilled in their employees and subordinate families.

Concurrently, we also get Kanae's story and how he is ready to go far to protect Shuu, even giving himself over to Bandanges to become more powerful. Family legacy is a yet again a big theme for the ghoul's side of the story in this arc, and Shuu honors that by rejecting Haise's plea to surrender himself. While the story has many emotional moments, a major storyline is Shuu reconciling his grief over losing Kaneki's memories and his desire to survive for the sake of his family. As the CCG is raiding the building where Shuu is trying to make his aerial escape, we get yet another gory bloodbath as the altered Kanae arrives on the scene. It is also an exciting mission for the CCG investigators, like Urie, who are just itching to get some kills on their record, as they are basically exterminating a whole community of ghouls. (I may also have felt a little satisfaction that Kijima was killed off)

One would think with so much already going on, how Ishida managed to insert some background too, but he managed. We learn a bit more about the one-eyed ghouls like Takizawa, and the differences between them and Quinxes; we also learn about why Akira was chosen to be 'mother' to Haise; there is also Kanae's childhood tragedy, him being afab and his love for Shuu.

Overall, it is one intense story arc.

Bel capitolo, molto inteso.
1) i disegni all’inizio erano più “puliti”, meno complessi e particolareggiati, direi essenziali.

FINALLY! Tokyo Ghoul is starting to return to it's former glory.

With Shu's family under attack we get to see the CGC really attack and terminate an entire family of Ghouls. One of the strongest in fact. With Shu and his servants making a last stand will they be able to survive this onslaught? Not to mention Kankei's mind is breaking and his past is starting to come back to him. On top of that this is a blood bath as multiple characters are fed to the slaughter here.

This is by far the best volume in RE so far. Mostly because we get to see a lot of old characters again, but also the fact Shu is presented in a new way I enjoyed. I also loved most of the fights, they're brutal and there's an amazing shot of a sacrifice I won't spoil. The only negative is sometimes the fight scenes can be a bit jarring, or the faces too similar to another character.

But THIS is what I wanted with RE since it started. Now we're getting somewhere! A 4 out of 5.

Things are getting real! That ending! Has Haise's memories returned? Is Ken back? What will happen? I gotta read the next volume as soon as possible...
We learnt a lot more about the Tsukiyama family tree and history, making the eradication a lot more emotional. The feelings I get about these eradications are changing rapidly. You have sympathy for the ghouls from the original series, yet you gain some insight into the CCG operations. Both sides have crazy psychopaths and genuinely nice people. Seeing everyone die, and I mean practically everyone, gives you mixed feelings. The ghouls aren't bad, not all of them, and far from all the doves are good.
Mainly looking forwards to seeing how Ken/Haise is going to develop, cause he's got a lot going on.
