Hunter by name – Hunter by nature: DI Hunter Wilson will not rest until Edinburgh is safe.

Detective Inspector Hunter Wilson knows there is a new supply of cocaine flooding his city, and he needs to find the source, but his attention is transferred to murder when a corpse is discovered in the grounds of a golf course.

Shortly after the post-mortem, Hunter witnesses a second murder, but that is not the end of the slaughter. With a young woman's life also hanging in the balance, the last thing Hunter needs is a new man on his team: Detective Constable Tim Myerscough, the son of his nemesis, the former Chief Constable Sir Peter Myerscough.

Hunter's perseverance and patience are put to the test time after time in this first novel in The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries series.

5☆ Gripping, Fast Paced Crime Thriller, with a sprinkling of Humour

Hunter's Chase was a fantastic crime thriller.
What I loved most was the subtle sarcastic humour and banter between characters, you don't normally get in a Crime Thriller.

It was thoroughly entertaining and all the way through it kept up the momentum and Fast pace.
There is murders, secret liaisons, theft, crime, family secrets, drugs, a clear divide between those who are privileged and those who are not, excellent detective & crime investigations.

Val Penny cleverly weaved the stories together.
It was action packed, with plenty of police procedurals, (the post mortem was an educational experience).
Right from the first chapter I was gripped, Plenty of memorable Characters.
It oozed a sense of danger as to what may or may not happen next!

There are alot of Characters but each are connected in some way or another. That's all I can really say. Val Penny brings each character to life as you start to learn about their backstory and how each one is linked.

The only thing I did find was there was so many detectives etc... I tended to get confused. I am like that with all Crime Books. It's not till near enough the end that I finally get to grips with them all
But the main Detective Inspector Hunter was memorable.

Detective Inspector Hunter is witty, Sarcastic, knows his job but is not affraid to take risks, he has a flirtatious and a softer side, but can be strong and comanding when needed at times a lil ruthless.
I really like Hunter, I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing more from him and his team.

I loved the start of the story, it was  clever and funny. A theft that ends up in a cat and mouse chase ends badly but unearths a murky shallow grave!
A great opener, and things just kept getting better.

If you are looking for a crime thriller that is gripping, action packed, addictive, yet has a nice dose of humour, but still keeps you sensing danger, then you will really enjoy Hunter's Chase.

Thank you to Brook Cottage for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This is the first book I've read by Val Penny, and I'm happy that I did. Hunter's Chase is a dark police procedural centered in Edinburgh. I love crime fiction, and Penny has written a thriller that opens with a heart-pumping scene when Jamie Thompson gets caught red-handed stealing valuables from D.C. Peter Myerscough's home.
Myerscough, despite the age difference, is in extraordinarily good health. He chases after Jamie across the golf course where Jamie works. Ironically, it was a job that Myerscough pulled hard for Jamie to get the job for him. Myerscough catches up with Jamie when he trips and breaks his ankle. What made Jamie stumble turned out to be the leg of a corpse, thus begins the exciting story Penny weaves.
Hunter's Chase is a labyrinth of twists and turns that keep you flipping pages from beginning to end. It's original and has an extensive character list, each well-developed and easy to track with. Penny has hit a home run with her first book in this series. It's fast-paced, filled with intrigue, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. A five-star read!

I love a well-plotted mystery as much as I love being transported to a different locale and a different culture. Modern-day Scotland comes alive on the first page of this intricate whodunnit, where the bad guys aren’t completely bad, nor are the good guys completely good. There are many layers and nuances in this tale that gets off to a rollicking start with a young criminal who would be quite the entrepreneur if he could just see the advantages of making an honest wage.

Along with young Jamie Thompson comes a quirky extended family that is no stranger to the law. Though a scrappy bunch, hellbent on enjoying the good life without actually having to work, they do have one thing in common: their fear and loathing of law enforcement.

DI Hunter’s lot isn’t much more amiable. There’s as much jealousy and in-fighting amongst the rank and file as there is teamwork. All these well-drawn characters leap off the page, coming to life with pitch-perfect dialects and quirky customs. And at the heart of all the shenanigans is not one murder, but three that DI Hunter and his gaggle of crime stoppers must apprehend before another body turns up.

DI Hunter Wilson was just about to leave the station for the pub and his darts match when DC Winston Zewedu stops him with some unwelcome news. Sir Peter Myerscough, former Chief Constable and now Justice Minister, had arrived home and caught an intruder red-handed, putting paid to Jamie Thomson’s ill fated attempt at robbery. Jamie wasn’t expecting Myerscough home until much later but when he arrived back early Jamie ran, with Myerscough in hot pursuit. Jamie might possibly have escaped if he hadn’t tripped over the corpse of a woman half buried in the grounds of the golf course, and broken his ankle.

DI Wilson’s case load has intensified as the team are not only investigating the increase of cocaine into the city, plus the body found at the golf course, now there are two more murders to add to the list of open cases.

I have to admit I struggled with this review. While the plot was promising and appealed to me, I do think it would benefit from more editing to tighten up the narrative and make the story flow more, getting rid of unnecessary padding and repetition and making it easier to follow. Also, much of the dialogue seemed awkward and unnatural for the characters.

We were introduced to a large cast of diverse characters which didn’t allow for much development, and the story comes from several points of view. If I had to pick a favourite it would be Tim Myerscough, son of Sir Peter. His was a good story arc. He was new to the police force and obliged to live down the antics of his father, but despite that he forged good relationships with his work colleagues.

The forensic details were well researched and described, and there were a few twists and turns I wasn’t expecting. Needless to say, I didn’t guess the perpetrator.

I can see I’m very much in the minority after looking at some of the reviews, so maybe this book just wasn’t meant for me.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Hunter's Chase' by Val Penny.

Read and reviewed for ZooLoos Book Tours, Spellbound Books and Val Penny.

Publication date 20th August 2022.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the first book in the 'DI Hunter Wilson Crime Thriller' series.

I was originally drawn to this book by its  eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. It is probably one of the weirdest reasons to want to read a book but another reason I was drawn to it is because the main protagonist is called Hunter and Hunter is in the title and sons name is Hunter!! I  must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Spellbound Books. I have yet to read a book published by Spellbound Books that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 49 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Edinburgh, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.

This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonist being DI Hunter Wilson. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene and kept me on the edge of my seat. The cover and synopsis suited the storyline perfectly.

WOW!! What an explosive start to what promises to be an epic series!!!

What an absolutely addictive page turner!! It may be the first book I have read by Val but I can promise you it won't be the last!!! As soon as I've written this up I'm off to add all her books to my wishlist. This book is an absolutely fantastic and explosive start to what promises to be an addictive series!! I was completely sucked into the pages from start to finish and was gutted when it came to an end! The storyline is multi-layered and absolutely ram packed with mystery, deceit, murder, secrets, lies, romance, tension and suspense. I love the fact that although this is a crime thriller there is some light hearted moments throughout which had me laughing out loud on several occasions!! I also enjoyed the fact that there wasnt just the main storyline but plenty of other events going on to absolutely grip the readers attention. I enjoyed looking into the lives of several of the characters. I will admit that I wasn't really surprised when the killer was revealed but what did shock me was the fact that this actually didn't spoil the book for me. I normally hate it when I guess the killer and it tends to spoil the storyline. I never give a book a 5/5 if I work out who the killer is so the fact that I am in this case highlights how much I enjoyed the storyline so a MASSIVE WELL DONE Val on being my first ever 5/5 after guessing the killer!! I really enjoyed the setting of this book and I cannot wait until the second book in this series 'Hunter's Revenge'!!

DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT READING THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE CLEARED YOUR SCHEDULES AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN!!!

It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but strangely I find it important that I like the pathologist too. In this case the pathologists were Dr Meera Dharma, Dr David Murray and Dr Aiddn Fraser and I am pleased to say that I really liked them and their individual personalities.

I wasn't just 100% invested in the storyline but also in the characters. Every single one of the characters were well defined, realistic and strong. I will admit I was confused with the amount of characters for a while and even wrote our the Family tree for Jamie and Frankie 😂 but it will always be like that when starting a new series. I worked out who was who pretty quickly and it didn't affect how I felt about the book overall. I really liked DI Hunter Wilson and loved how well he worked with his team. Hunter is down to Earth, has a good sense of humour and is a great team player. I thought his crush on Dr Meera Sharm was sweet and I'm looking forward to seeing if that relationship develops in the next book! I wasn't a huge fan of DCI Mackay especially when he was brown nosing a certain person during an interview but I found that he was a great boss when it came to how he treated another member of the team. My heart went out to DC Tim Myerscough for various reasons but I don't want to say too much in case it spoils the book for future readers. I will say that I did think Hunter was a bit mean to him when he started just because he couldn't stand his father. I loved Sergeant Jane Renwick and Rachael who were partners out of work which I thought was sweet especially how well they seemed to get on in work. They both had great personalities and kick butt attitudes. I love seeing strong females in books and Jane, Rachael and Meena definitely ticked those boxes. I can't forget Samantha Hutchens who was the criminal photographer. You don't see an awful lot of her so I'm looking forward to getting to know her more. Another team member was DC Winston Zewedu (Bear) who I absolutely adored and thought was a great team player and friend, especially to Tim. There were other members of the team but I won't say who because I will say I was completely shocked by one of them who I had started to like. Two of the characters who were not part of the team but were big parts of the storyline were Jamie and Frankie. Jamie had me in stitches on so many occasions I lost count. I absolutely LOVED his attitude and although he was on the wrong side of the law I really hope we get to meet him again. My heart went out to Frankie who was Jamie's cousin as he seemed to be dealt all the worse things in life and everything he went through was heartbreaking. I cannot wait to meet most of these characters again and am looking forward to 'Hunter's Revenge'.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Val on what promises to be a an absolutely addictive series!!! I cannot wait to see what Hunter and his team get up to next! Welcome to my favourite author list Vak and here's to your next explosive success 🥂!!!

Overall an explosive start to a promising new series and an absolutely addictive action packed page turner that will keep you hooked until you've finished!!!

Genres covered in this book include Crime Thriller, Mystery, Thriller , Suspense, Crime Fiction, Police Procedural, Scottish Crime, Noir Crime, British Detective Stories,  Fiction and Thriller amongst others.

305 pages.

This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle and £5.58 for paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

I think I might be in love with a new detective and book series! I loved that it was set in Scotland, only having been there the once, and reading about it so much in a few books recently, it makes me really want to go back and visit properly. I just want more of DI Hunter Wilson… please?? Oh, wait… I will be *happy dance*

This is an entertaining crime thriller book, which I just happen to love. There is so much going on at once! You have murders, drug lords, pregnancy, robberies, family secrets, drama and lots of mystery to solve. I thought the author’s writing was gritty and she kept you hooked from page one. I will admit to you do need to concentrate when reading this book, I got lost with all the characters at one point and had to re-read a couple of pages to figure out how everyone was linked.

Hunter, a man on a mission, takes no crap and is investigating a murder on a golf course, also has a twinkle in his eye for a certain lady. He has a new team member, Tim, the son of the ex-Chief police constable and someone who Hunter really does not like. Tim must prove himself to Hunter to show that he is not like his dad, trying to always escape the huge shadow he has created. I really liked his character.

It is my first introduction to Hunter and his team (being the first book and all), and it is not going to be my last (you must wait until September for that one!). I did love that you got to meet the whole team, each getting their own screen time so to speak, as they are all part of the investigation. They become real people like the main character, as the author fleshes them out which makes this book so much more of a gripping read, as you become invested in them all.

What is more amazing, this is a debut book! What an introduction indeed!

I really enjoyed this debut novel by Val Penny. I was hooked from the start when the hapless thief Jamie trips over a corpse in the grounds of Merchant’s Golf Club. Good fast paced storyline with several strands to the plot cleverly woven together. I liked the various characters that we are introduced to and look forward to reading more of Hunter and his team. I’d like to see how his relationship with Dr. Meera Sharma the Pathologist develops.
There are several rather unpleasant deaths, a drug lord and an Edinburgh criminal family which are being investigated by Hunter’s team and gradually the truth emerges. I had guessed who the killer was before the end but nevertheless it was a gripping tale. Edinburgh is a great setting as I enjoy books set in places I know.
There were some elements of humour in the dialogue which adds to the enjoyment. I would recommend it.

I have a new hero: Detective Inspect Hunter – tough when needs be but with a soft centre.

Move over all you crime writers, there’s a new girl in town : Val Penny . She’s penned a crime thriller that is so well plotted with a myriad of believable characters that the novel moves along at a pace that keeps the reader hooked from beginning to end. Hunter’s Chase is a novel that should stand on the shelves next to the best-sellers.

I believe the book was well researched because, for me, the facts were spot on (the post mortem scene will stay with me for a long time!). The mix of humour and thriller kept me enthralled (as well as “seeing” Edinburgh in winter) and I can’t wait to see what lovely DI Hunter is going to have to solve next. An excellent debut novel.

I was in the mood for a good mystery with well-built characters and an interesting setting. Val Penny’s Hunter’s Chase satisfied that craving. DI Hunter Wilson and his co-workers have three related deaths to investigate in Edinburgh, Scotland. Val keeps us armchair detectives guessing as they solve the case. Looking forward to the next in this series.

This novel set in Edinburgh, Scotland follows the cases that DI Hunter Wilson is assigned. Hunter is even more concerned about his new DC. Tim Myerscough is the son of MSP and former boss, Sir Peter Myerscough.

As the tale begins, Sir Peter appears to be the innocent victim of a robbery he walks into. Sir Peter chases the culprit and catches him...age be darned, Sir Peter keeps fit. Thus we begin to meet the characters of this new series.

I found myself liking the bad guys. Very unusual. We find there is a crime family and certainly morals are lacking. The victims of the crimes that increase as the pages turn are an interesting lot. We even are able to read the thoughts of one soon to be murder victim as death approaches.

Drugs and murder abounds in this opening novel of this series. I must say that I didn't appreciate the constant swearing but I realize times have changed and the language does follow the class level of this particular family.

I was caught up in the story and thought the characters well formed. I will look forward to reading the next book in the series.

A local book with a bit of local flavour, but it needed an edit to remove some inconsistencies and repetition. Some pieces seemed out of order. These relatively minor problems made me distrust the clues spread around... it was a strangely unsettling experience.
The dialogue is... well... expository rather than realistic.
The polis seem to have an idea, but go home and get a good night's kip rather than informing the rest of the team. So I'd not say the action was pacy.
Also, perhaps because the reader is aware of so much more than the characters, or perhaps because of the writing, the moments when characters realise something are amazingly underplayed.
I admit to skipping some paragraphs.

Sadly the book read as if not quite finished. It is in need of a good proofread.
The plot, however, was interesting and has potential. It tended to jump around a bit and at times seemed confused and difficult to follow.
I rarely write reviews but this book does need some tweaking to make it the book it should be.

Hunter leads the way in this intricate crime puzzler.

What an absolutely marvellous read! Wonderful and memorable characters and a tension filled ending that leaves the reader in awe of the intricacies woven into this plot. So many twists and so many characters, all fulfilling their own important place in a thoroughly gripping read and adding their own minute pieces of this jigsaw puzzling crime. Luckily we have DI Hunter Wilson leading the way and putting the pieces together with the help of his more than able colleagues.
This will indeed be another series to get my teeth into and I’m looking forward to the main characters reintroducing themselves to me and giving more of a glimpse into their lives.
Indisputably a five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star read for this introduction to The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries.

Someone is viciously murdering people in Edinburgh. While young man Jaime robs the former chief of police, he trips over a dead body. Two more people are viciously run over by a silver vehicle.
Not to mention the cocaine keeps popping up in this investigation.
Hunter does his best to chase down the leads, while breaking in a new detective.
Fast paced, gasp out loud moments. Well written - and these characters were yanking on my heart strings.

"Hunter's Chase" is the first book in the series and it was a fantastic start of a series. Val gets you intrigued in not only the mystery/crime that got you to start the book, but the new group of character - primarily the main character, Hunter Wilson - that get you on this mystery adventure.

Yesterday I was talking to my friend, a crime/mystery lover, about books, and he agreed that in a good mystery book, is the plot is not the only important thing. A character that engages and let us feel like we are part of the story because of how we get suck in, is also important. Most of the time even if the mystery is epic and the crime mind blowing, if the characters don't hold down the house and develop as the book goes, the storyline can die and feel boring. But... If the characters surprise us, makes us laugh, make us hate or love them, make us excited to learn new things and facts... then the storyline gets a great pace and the mystery journey keeps unfolding.

Val gets that in her book. She makes me get curious about the mystery and curious to learn more about DI Hunter Wilson. As the book continues, from the first page to the last, I was kind happy in a way. Happy because with each book I reads in this genre I get surprise by the author's take on the all crime and mystery idea and gave the book their own personal twist.

Things keep happening, some are unexpected, others are just amazingly described, and I kept wondering about what would happen next. The thriller aspect of the book and Val's vivid descriptions gave the book a powerful punch and that's one of the reasons I loved it so much and why I believe the book is an amazing start in the series.

Full of action, descriptions, crime, murder, thriller and a fantastic main character... Val Penny's "Hunter's Chase" is here to take the spotlight (for a moment, just until the next book in the series arrives, then we can go crazy again) and take us in a rollercoaster of emotions and mystery.

With thanks to the publisher for the copy received. Hunter’s Chase is a new series of books that is set in Edinburgh. Hunter is one of the more senior detectives in the squad and despite the book being about him there is also plenty of focus on the other members in the team. One of these is Will, and he has more to prove than the others. Not only is he new, he is also the son of a once high-ranking officer who is now an MP. There is history between him and Hunter and he has to get past the feeling of special favours being granted. Will was probably my favourite member of the police and I’m interested to see what happens to him next.
But the characters who I thought were portrayed the best were the younger ones. Jamie, with his delusions of being an object of desire, Frankie with his devotion to Annie, and Annie herself. Her story is very sad but I thought it cleverly done.

Review of Val Penny’s Hunter’s Chase

This is a stunner of a debut mystery novel. Author Val Penny’s police procedural, Hunter’s Chase, is original and kept my interest throughout. I liked the POV switches and especially enjoyed the Edinburgh setting, which is attention-grabbing and authentic. The author’s use of a smattering of Scottish expressions, the weather, the street names, etc. made it even more realistic. A few too many characters, perhaps, but still, their stories and involvement were fascinating—I’m certainly looking forward to the next installment.

I may be biased as this entire book is based in Edinburgh. My birthplace.
When someone trips over a corpse on the golf course in the first chapter, they have my attention. A gritty, sarcastic murder series that represented Scotland well. Great characters that made you feel like you knew them with their sarcastic banter.
When you throw in words like “dreich”, “Irn-bru” and phrases like “the wee man upstairs” it made me nostalgic.
Excited to read the next book in the series’s. always good when you find a new author.

I just finished reading Hunter's Chase by Val Penny. A wonderful crime thriller with all the components that make mysteries alluring~ murder, multiple suspects, secrets and some very well done unexpected sentimental elements only enhancing an already well written crime thriller .
What I loved most is that although the main character is DI Hunter's Wilson, all the members of his team are much more than bit players ensuring that they have prominent tracks. In addition the well crafted plot comes together to make for one immersive and intriguing reading experience. Highly recommended.

Mystery solved

Thrilling page turning fraught with twists and turns on every page. This author weaves a fantastically intricate and quite plausible tale of murder. No fear, though, as the main character, Hunter, (which also happens to be my grandson’s name) will leave no theory unexamined as he sets about solving a seemingly bizarre murder. Ms. Penny’s characters are well-crafted and her dialogue quite engaging. A highly recommended read!
