A missing actress and a bored writer, and a matter of life and death when their stories collide ……
Actress Wendy Knight thought her life was finally turning around. She had a steady gig on a popular soap opera and had just bought a beautiful cottage. But when her ex came back into the picture, he wanted to take all of that away from her and more…and then she disappears.
Scriptwriter Angie Bearing longs to write something deeper than daytime soaps. When the plot for a new thriller comes to her, she doesn't question it. At least until she discovers an uncanny resemblance between her story and the unsolved disappearance of an actress named Wendy. Angie begins to investigate. As she retraces Wendy's footsteps, she doesn't realise that someone is watching her. Someone who would do anything to keep the awful truth buried for good.
Witness for Wendy is the captivating first book in the Bearing Witness series, a collection of exciting thrillers. If you like surprising twists, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and a touch of the unusual, then you'll love M K Turner's fast-paced mystery.

Having worked in the property industry for most of her adult life, latterly at a senior level for a corporate agency, Marcia finally escaped in 2010. Whilst she still works as a consultant for several independent agencies, she can now dedicate the bulk of her time to writing and of course reading.
Misplaced Loyalty was her debut novel in published format, and introduced the popular Meredith & Hodge Crime series. In 2017 Marcia published Witness for Wendy the first in the Bearing Witness series. She has also written several stand alone novels.
Marcia is married with two children and lives in Bristol UK. Marcia can be contacted at www.mkturnerbooks.co.uk
This was my second book by author Mattis Turner and I'm happy to say totally different from the Meredith and Hodge book I read prior. I enjoyed the play of two stories unfolding, one in the present and the other, the murder mystery, in the past. With a smart and believable twist we are taken on a journey where I didn't see who had committed the murder until the very end of the story. And that, to me, is a successful and enjoyable experience 😊 Thank you, Ms Turner for a great story!
I enjoyed this book very much. The writing style and storyline, the plot, and most of all the believable characters. The story moves along quickly with just the right amount of description and no fluff. I have read quite a lot of books lately that were not exciting and I was thrilled to find this one that kept my interest from chapter one.
Fast-moving, twisting psycho- thriller. Well-written keeping you reading until the end. Characters are realistic, scenes are well-planned and kept interesting with dialogue between antagonistic actors who keep things moving.
As a huge fan of the Meredith & Hodge audiobooks I was keen to have a listen to this series rather than reading it so I was thrilled when the audiobook version was released.
Well, first of all, it's nothing like Meredith & Hodge, something the author makes very clear from the start. But then, perhaps the world couldn't cope with another John Meredith, haha. The dual timeline in this book is very well executed and easy to follow, unlike some I've read. The characters are nicely fleshed out and either easy to like or easy to loathe, depending which is intended of course.
I'm especially glad that the story is written in the third person which helps it flow and doesn't bloat the pages with the character's innermost thoughts, fears and turmoils. Yes, these emotions are all there and well described but often when told in first person narrative I feel they can sound whiny, self-indulgent and less likeable. For me it's easier to follow the story from outside where the reader/listener can see things the main character can't.
The narrator does a superb job of telling the story and giving life to the characters and is a pleasure to listen to.
The story kept me enthralled from the start and I can't wait to listen to the next in the Bearing Witness series.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.
This is a truly disturbing story. Be very careful reading this. It’s a dark physiological thriller.
This is a story within a story. Definitely don’t like Wendy’s boyfriend. He’s creepy, demeaning, manipulative, and someone no woman should have to put up with.
Angie is a screenwriter for a successful soap opera. She wakes up one morning and starts writing a novel about a woman who goes missing. As things progress Angie gets more and more involved in the real life story of a missing actress which seems to mirrors her story.
I’m only three or four hours into this audiobook and am already questioning whether or not I can finish listening to this. I want to know what happens; if what I think is going to happen will happen, but I really don’t know if I can handle this character.
You can tell this story is very well written. This is definitely a departure from M.K. Turner’s detective series, which is fine. Obviously I’m connecting with the writing. If I listen to it, it’s going to take a while, because it will have to be done in small doses.
This was slightly out of my comfort zone due to the Paranormal theme but it was done in such a way as it wasn't the usual cheesy clairvoyant running the show, Angie receiving the story from Wendy when she sat down to write at her computer. I liked how Angie and Wendy were linked by the TV show and their home too. I loved the way the individual characters were portrayed by the narrator, she did a great job of making them seem real, though some of the male voices sounded very similar (maybe this was part of the subterfuge, as I suspected several of them being "Him") This was a well written mystery, kept me guessing right up to near the end with the slow drip of revelations and the different timelines (Wendy/Angie) adding just a bit more each time to the story. Will definitely continue reading the series, and also will look into any other work of the narrator too.
Wow..I am not sure where to start. MK Turner launched it out of the park with this one. I have been reading another of her series and this one is definitely different. This genre twist until recently has not had any appeal to me. Now by opportunity I have come to realize I like the suspense that this secret creates for the entire story and how it heightens the intensity of emotions through out. I hope you are wondering what I am referring to as I am not telling. Nikki Loy does a stellar job of bringing the story and characters to life and sets an atmosphere that makes this a true page turner although it is an audio book. . Job well done...which is nothing new for MK Turner.
I received a Kindle copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway, for which I'd like to thank the publisher and author.
This is a dual timeline book that took me a few chapters to understand that it was a dual timeline. I did like the idea of Wendy 'telling' her story, but felt that the 'why' Angie was being told the story was a bit odd, as nothing else similar to the reason 'why' was mentioned earlier in the book. I give the author props for an interesting idea with a good execution of twists, turns, and red herrings. I would say this was an fun read, though I'll probably not continue the series.
I took a chance in a new author not knowing what she writes like. Now I recommend to anyone that likes mystery/ crime with a bit of afterlife included. You really get a feel for the characters and I love the banter between the ladies in the family. This book draws you in so quickly and keeps you guessing until the very end. I can't wait for more of the series. Thanks Marcia x
I thought the story had a bit of a slow start, but it was like being gradually pulled into another person's life. Intricate with three lines intertwining; the then, the now and also the other - a made up reality in the planning of a tv show. Once I was in, it was impossible to get out......totally absorbing, this story is like being pulled in all directions by a very large dog!
I really enjoyed this, unusual for a 'Free' book, I don't normally like anything with a supernatural element. The only thing that spoiled it was the arrival of the mother and grandmother and the suggestion that the family had a 'gift', because of this I am unlikely to read any more in the series. The character of the culprit was very well drawn. One niggle, Angela was attacked and didn't know who by, unlikely. I nearly have this give stars ! ! !
Twenty years ago actress Wendy Knight on the new soap The Village disappears. In the present day scriptwriter and mother-to-be Angie Bearing, bored with her writing on the daytime soap, starts to write the story of the fictional character Wendy. Until she realises that Wendy actually existed. An interesting read.
I loved the characters cod the three generator the Bearing Women. Poor Angie she had no intention of bearing witness to Wendy's miserable last year, but she really had no choice. And trying to figure out who the killer is was truly impossible til the last chapter! I found these women when they appeared in Meredith & Hodges' books but I'll happily be reading them all & I sure I will still want more!!
I must confess that when I started reading this book that I was confused and it took a little while to realise that the characters where in effect, separate stories.
Witness for Wendy is the kind of writing that quickly pulls you into the plot and won't let you put it down. I couldn't wait to read what was going to happen next.
What a great book. It's one exciting read. You feel like you are there with everyone. Well written with believable characters and intriguing plots that keeps your attention and keeps you guessing until the end. Would recommend this for anyone who loves a great book.
This story holds you spellbound From start to finish. Read in one sitting. To me that is the sign of an excellent story. Would love to find a dozen more as captivating.
I couldn’t put the book down. It wasn’t predictable like so many others from this genre. The chapters are well developed and I felt as if I truly knew them. You’ll never guess the ending!
Pregnant lady and husband, move into a new house. As time goes on, the woman is a script writer, and is contacted from the grave. Their new home, belonged to the murdered woman. Lots of plot twist and turns.
Great read will keep you guessing till the end. Be warned you will not be able to put down. Well written, great characters and gets your heart rate pumping as the way its written really makes you feel like you are Wendy. Can't wait for the next one.
