Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy.

Maybe reading an urban fantasy short story/novella collection wasn’t the smartest of ideas as I’m unfamiliar with the characters/worldbuilding. This is a freebie so I didn’t do too much research before reading. I liked the two wolf-centric stories the most. Definitely interested in reading Camille’s full-length books.

All the stories in Thrown to the Wolves take place before the the big final battle in Over The Moon. These short stories are all part of the Black Dog Universe. Fans of the Black Dog, Gemini, & Lorimar Pack will enjoy dropping back into the world and see their favorite characters again.

Thrown To The Wolves - 3 Stars

Here we get a deeper look into Zed, wolf in the Lorimar Pack and Jo, a human in town. We learning some interesting things about Jo and her Aunt and get to see Zed happy.

Out For Blood - 3 Stars

Here we get to see Lema a dhampir, a Marshal, and a character we meet in the Gemini series who was sent into the mental institute and is now out and back to work as a Marshal. We learn a little more about her heritage. Here we see a young coworker who has taken an interest in her and wants more then just a working relationship. These two are brought together; because of a murder investigation.

The Bakers Grimm - 3.5 Stars

A Fae and a Witch. Their family have been competitors for years. They both are backers and have shops next to each other, but in this tail the children come together and it's a Fairy Tale ending.

A Stone's Throw Christmas - 3.5 Stars

Graeson & Camille from the Gemini series celebrate Christmas with the pack and a few surprises are revealed. It was nice to see the Lorimar Pack again. It's a sweet holiday short story.

Dog Days of Summer - 4 Stars

Dog Days of Summer takes place between Dog with a Bone & Heir of the Dog. It's a fast-paced action packed novella. I devoured this adventure from the first to last page.

In this one Thierry is still very young and not very experienced at being a Marshall yet, so the cases she can choose are limited. We get to see Thierry in action, doing her thing to find a missing chicken thing, help Shaw find a kidnapped or missing boy and find a rogue Warg; before things get way out of hand.

The Black Dog, Gemini, & Lormair series are fabulously fun and entertaining. The world is vast and the characters are fascinating. Those that love Urban Fantasy's should give this world a try.

It would have been nice if each short story included which series to hit for the reread. I'm pulling a blank on the traumatized dhampire

❤️

Great little short stories, but I did have a bit of a hard time placing where they fit in the grand book scheme, especially with something as big as the Christmas announcement.

I'm one of those people who needs to read everything in order. And the events of the Black Dog/ Gemini/ Lorimar Pack books build on each other in such a way that a linear path through the books provides maximum enjoyments.

SO WHERE DO THESE STORIES FIT??? The uncertainty makes me twitch.

I know Dog Days of Summer was designed to go between Dog with a Bone and Heir of the Dog, because I read it early on. I liked this Thierry short then and it was a slice of life story with Thierry and Shaw working a case.

Out for Blood features Marshal Ayer, a side character dhampir we met briefly, who is working a case with a sexy young elf who has a crush on her. I liked it and because this case existed entirely outside of the series arc structure, it doesn't matter when it happened.

The other two, though? Arggghhh.

I didn't know I needed a Zed story until Thrown to the Wolves. He is so damaged, which is my hero catnip, and I could've read an entire book about him finding love again. I really enjoyed this one, but I wish it would've been at least a novella.

And A Stone's Throw Christmas? WHEN IS THIS? Spoilers ahead. This scrambles my brain.

The stories were good. But short. And they need a timeline guide for people like me.

Overall, I found the collection to be a great addition to the Black Dog Universe, especially with establishing cozy romances for side characters.

Thrown to the Wolves
Rating: ★★★★☆
Tags: shifters, fae, magic

This is a short story set after Promise the Moon and Wolf at the Door as it's about a little romance between Joanne and Zed after . I really enjoyed reading about new fae species and Zed getting his chance at second romance.
---
Out for Blood
Rating: ★★★★☆
Tags: detective, vampires, fae, elves

This short story takes place sometime after Hell or High Water as it follows Agent Hayes after she finally leaves the mental institution she was placed in as a consequence of her experience with Charybdis in the original Gemini trilogy. It's a super cute romance between Agent Hayes and fellow Agent Jones as they try to track down a paranormal murdering humans in the region. We finally learn some more about vampires in the Black Dog universe, a species that hasn't been brought up much in any of the main series so far.

Dog Days of Summer
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Tags: detective, hunter, shifters, fae

This short story followed the FMC Thierry and her boyfriend/partner Shaw as they looked for a missing half-warg child and a neighbor's cockatrice. It was a quick short mystery, but it wasn't super complex or developed any characters or relationships very deeply.

A Stone's Throw Christmas
Rating: ★★★★☆
Tags: shifters, fae, magic

A cute Christmas story about the Lorimar Pack with Graemar and Camille that appears to take place after all the events in Over the Moon since Dell and Isaac are together and Enzo is mentioned as the pack witch. It was an adorable scene, and a nice conclusion for the whole universe.

I'd read all but Thrown to the Wolves and Out for Blood previously, so not only was it a thrill to have two new-to-me stories, it's also outstanding to have everything bundled in one place. What? I'm a simple individual. Being able to quickly find a specific story when I want to read it makes my day.

I feel it's only fair to say that I'm DEEPLY enamored of the Black Dog/Gemini world. Everything about these shorts make me happy from top to bottom. So prepare for me to go all fangirl and squeaky while writing this.

Thrown to the Wolves - Zed. ZED. Seeing him find his happy place made me ridiculously happy. RIDICULOUSLY. For all he's a wolf, his physical fragility as he fought through the loss of his mate was heartbreaking. His wolf's interest in Joann is definitely a good thing, but his human side isn't quite ready to jump in with both feet. Or all four.

We learn a little more about Zed and a lot more about Joann and things take a wild turn that works out for all of them.

Out for Blood - Marshal Ayer is still dealing with the fall-out with her run-in at the hands of a manipulative fae (waaaaay back when) and having a hero-worshiping young marshal helping her with her most recent case isn't necessarily doing her any favors. Except Marshal Jones isn't just struck with a case of hero-worship, he's also interested in the woman underneath the story.

They were honestly adorable. Jones teased Ayer out of her shell in a relentlessly gentle way and I LIKE THEM TOGETHER.

Then again, I like EVERYTHING I read in this world, so I'm totally biased. In the best way.

A collection of four short stories, all included great characters and situations:

Thrown to the Wolves: Joann Zhuang and her aunt Li are posing as humans and secretly helping fight the fae that have been invading the town of Butler, not revealing themselves to the wargs/wolves that protect the town. Zed Ames can’t stop his wolf from fixating on Jo, despite his wishes. There were some interesting twists to the story and I really hoped that Zed would get his act together because Jo was what he needed in his life.

Out for Blood: Marshal Eileen Ayer is a dhampir (half vampire) on a murder case on the island of St. Kitts. Assisting her is much younger Marshal Taye Jones, half elf and all attractive male. Eileen needs to focus on the job at hand, but Taye is a tempting distraction. With advice from her vampire father, they determine the likely perpetrator and work as a great team to solve the case. I liked this story, the characters were intriguing and their chemistry was very evident.

Dog Days of Summer: A search for a missing bird turns into a search for a missing boy, and then into a search for a rogue warg for Marshall Thierry Thackeray and her partner Marshall Jackson Shaw. They all seem to be connected in one way or another and once Thierry has it all figured out it makes perfect sense. It’s too bad about the stinky bird though, but the owner doesn’t seem to mind.

A Stone’s Throw Christmas: Agent Camille Ellis, a fae, has mated with warg Cord Graeson and has a secret she’s been keeping from him. He surprises her during their Christmas celebration and she finally shares her surprise as well, making it a celebration to remember. I felt like I should know these people and recognized a few from the story Thrown to the Wolves, but it was still a very enjoyable tale.

Thrown to the Wolves and Other Stories is an anthology of four short stories (Book #10.5) in the Black Dog series by Hailey Edwards.
Diving into The Black Dog Universe was a total treat – as Hailey Edwards has basically built this interconnected world where magic, supernatural politics, and snarky banter all collide - and it’s addictive.
The series doesn’t just stick to one MC - instead, it hops between different main characters whose stories overlap in clever and intriguing ways. We get werewolves, fae, witches, and all sorts of supernatural chaos - but what really makes it shine is how human the characters feel, even when they’re not technically human. They’re flawed, funny, and sometimes make terrible decisions - which makes them all the more relatable.
If you like your fantasy worlds rich and immersive, your characters messy in the best way, and your plots full of supernatural intrigue - then this universe is definitely worth diving into. Just be warned - once you start, you just might end up binge-reading the whole thing, just like me.
Happy Reading…

Thrown to the Wolves Review

Fun set of short stories giving some closure to a few side characters and a little bonus story for Cam and Thierry. I enjoyed them all but I Cam's was definitely my favorite. My only small complaint is I wish they were longer because I could have happily read a full book on each of them especially the last one.
Even still I would say they are a must read for fans of the Black Dog Universe.

I received Thrown to the Wolves, and Other Stories as a review copy from the author/publisher (via BookFunnel). The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. I love Edwards' writing and most of her characters- Thrown to the Wolves gave readers a taste of favorite characters and new story lines. A quick, yet enjoyable read.

What fun!

Great stories to feed my always growing curiosity of what happens when we aren't around. I think the only thing i would have liked is the timeline clarified. There were a few instances where i wasnt sure where the story fell in the black dog universe timeline. Other than that it was great to see what's going on with these characters.

Although I had previously read the Thrown to the Wolves short story, I hadn't read the others and to be honest I have read the series that these characters appear in so it was a great way of introducing them to me! Really enjoyed all of the stories, but Thrown to the Wolves was my favourite one. Now I need to read the other series by Hailey Edwards to revisit these other characters.

Good collection of short stories. If you have not read the original series, you might have issues, but I read out of order, and did OK. The story is self-contained, but you might miss some of the references. Recommend as it is a good anthology, and well done.
