The Frosty Taste of Scandal

Rate this book
Elise Pepper has had her share of bad dates, but she's never had a dead body crash one before. Mr. Hamilton, the renowned Ice-man, purveyor of shady mortgages does just that when Elise finds him dead at the ice-rink. The scene of the crime is no coincidence, either. The Ice-man meets an icy end. And a freak power outage is only impeding the police.

When Elise’s coworker, Sue, begs for help, Elise is surprised to discover Sue was related to the man. And her family is fighting over his will and the appearance of an illegitimate son. It doesn't take long to discover everyone in town had reason to benefit from the banker’s death.

When even the king and queen of the local high school's Winter Ball come under suspicion, Elise wonders if they'll ever find out who did it.

This may be the first case where the killer walks away.

CeeCee James sent me her latest Angel Lake Mystery The Frosty Taste of Scandal and I loved it. Best first chapter I have read in the longest time, loved this book all the way through, mystery was fab and the murder weapon well very smart and tied in beautifully to the story. I could not put it down, reading well past my bedtime to finish. I said and thought "ooh!" so many times in this book. Loved the twist at the end and the cozy feelings this book left me with. Perfect holiday read with all the feels and so much more! From the title, to the cover and all the words beyond it, I was thrilled! Read it! That's my advice!

The beautiful cover of The Frosty Taste of Scandal drew me to buy and open the book. The first chapter pulled me in instantly and I didn’t look back.

This book has it all, a good mystery, likable characters, a little romance, food, and friendship. One of the highlights for me was the addition of Lucy, a teenager who is going through a rough spot and taken in by our main character, Elise. It reminded me the difference a mentor can make to a young person. I give this book five stars.

In The Frosty Taste of Scandal by CeeCee James, Elise goes to the local ice skating rink for a date with her fiance, Brad, but as a police officer, Brad gets delayed over an hour, arriving just in time to see Elise fall on the ice. As she recovers and starts to leave the ice, Elise notices the man sitting in the zamboni, and he hasn’t moved at all since she first saw him. When Brad checks out the man, he discovers the man dead. The next day as Elise goes to her job at a chiropractor’s office, her co-worker, Sue, tells Elise that her Uncle Roger Hamilton, of Hamilton’s Security’s Bank, was just murdered and found at the ice rink, bringing Elise into the case.

✮✮✮⭑

I purchased this at the current price. This is my honest and unbiased review for which I am not being compensated.

I know that the sixth book is a strange place to drop in on a series, but I was looking for Christmas reads at the time and the cover attracted me. This is not a Christmas read, but the soft colors, and hot chocolate with the lantern just made such a cozy picture I couldn’t resist. All of the covers in this cozy series are really appealing.

This takes place in Angel Lake, TN. Elise Pepper is a receptionist for the local chiropractor. She works with Sue. She has a cat named Max and a fiance named Brad Carter. She has a 16 year-old named Lucy living with her while her mother is in prison and then rehab. Elise’s BFF is Lavinia. The love of her life is Mr. G. Lavinia has decided that she’s going to be Elise’s maid of honor based on a childhood vow the two made. And she’s getting a little pushy lately about the wedding plans, but the couple haven’t even set a date! Lavinia might be feeling a little anxious because Elise and Brad are getting married, but Mr. G won’t even discuss marriage and they’ve been together since high school! Maybe it’s time to cut him loose and see if there are more fish in the sea.

Brad Carter is a policeman, so it’s really difficult for Elise and Brad to find a lot of time to have dates. But they’re supposed to go ice skating. Elise is all ready. She’s got her skates and hopes Brad won’t be too late. She hasn’t skated in a lot of years. She’s counting on it’s being like riding a bike. Just a little practice and it all comes back to you. Brad’s text said he’d be a little late, but it’s been over an hour, so some hot chocolate is in order. The guy sitting up on the zamboni has been there the whole time, just grinning each time she goes around. Why’s he wearing sunglasses inside? Well, the skating seems to be coming back to her so she tries a little more and OOPS… she’s down hard! Just as Brad shows up! But why’s the guy on the zamboni still sitting there grinning that same grin and with his sunglasses on?

Mr. Roger Hamilton is the local banker with a large estate. And he’s never driven the zamboni in his life. What was he doing at the ice rink? He was supposed to be somewhere else. Who was he meeting there? Brad is in “full police mode”.

Sue, at the chiropractor’s office, is the niece of Roger. She and her mother don’t get along well. She’s asked Elise to accompany her to a meeting she has to go to with her mother. Elise is going, but she doesn’t understand why Sue would be so afraid of her own mother. She understands as soon as she walks in the door. Sue’s mother is very cutting and belittling to Sue and everyone else. But that’s not the only thing Elise learns at the meeting. Apparently, Roger Hamilton had a surprise son! One that no one knew about until now that is going to upset the will completely! And if they fight it they don’t get anything.

Elise and Brad are both in sleuthing mode for this one. The police department is used to Elise’s contributions to Brad’s cases. And she certainly pulls the answers out on this one as she follows the paper trail.

At what was supposed to be a ice skating date with her fiance, Brad, Elise Pepper discovers a dead body seated on the ice machine. The body turns out to be that of Roger Hamilton, the General Manager of the Hamilton Securities.Bank. Unfortunately, Mr. Hamilton seems to be responsible for a number of shady loans made to the people of Angel Lake, most notably Grandma Babe's Restaurant.

In a surprise move, the bank's lawyer, Mr. Bingham, was able to block an audit by the FDIC which accused the bank of Predatory Lending. Not all of Mr. Bingham's news was good though, as Roger's family was informed that Roger had changed his will to include an illegitimate son that nobody knew about.

Who killed Roger? Why was he killed? Can Grandma Babe save her restaurant? Can Elise and Brad figure out who killed Roger?

This story is fast moving with a lot ot twists and turns. The final solution is a total surprise. Definitely looking forward to more of the Angel Lake series.

E-Reader. Cozy Mystery

Elise is engaged to Brad.  She works as a receptionist for chiropractor and Sue who works with her.  Brad is a police officer at Angel Lake.

Elise is to meet Brad t the local ice rink for a date.  He arrives late, just as she fell.  He helps her up and she points to the zamboni in the corner and the man inside is in the position when skated 30 minutes ago.  Brad checks the man out and he's dead.  Calls it into police station code 134- murder.

The man they found was Roger Hamilton, 63 and his family owns the Hamilton Security Bank.

Elise decides she's going to investigate what happened and share what she finds.  There are many suspects.  Especially as when the family attorney reads the will and the added parts to his will. I
Will Elise help solve this mystery?
Also Elise has a 16 year old Lucy living with her. She found her in alley and her home. Brad likes Lucy and mind having an instant family when they get married.
So much more happens in this book you need to read it!
It's a good book. And don't think you'll figure out who the murder is! Enjoy!

Once again, Elise Pepper just can't seem to avoid finding dead bodies. When Scott is late for an ice skating date, Elise takes to the ice alone and notices a man sitting atop the Zamboni backed into the tunnel but thinks nothing of it until she realizes he hasn't moved in several laps around the rink. Scott arrives just in time to confirm Elise's fears - the man is dead. Soon his identity is revealed; he is a banker at an institution with an unusual motto: Since almost the ice age, we've been keeping you solid. There is no shortage of enemies and wronged customers, but when Elise's coworker Sue invites her to a family dinner (Sue is the niece of the deceased), the whole family looks suspicious! Finally Elise focuses on a minute clue and the murderer is brought to justice. The book doesn't end there, however. Elise and Scott marry at the gazebo at the lake, a perfect setting for them, and families and friends are almost as happy as the bride and groom. This was my favorite book in the Angel Lake series; I guess I'm just a sucker for happy endings!

What made me pick up this book randomly was the beautiful cover that gave me a craving for a steaming cup of coffee instantly!

It is the last book in the Angel Lake Mystery series by CeeCee James and although I haven’t read any of the other installments, the writing was flowy enough to be easily able to grasp the general plotline of the series as a whole.

One thing that makes or breaks a cozy mystery for me is the nature of the amateur sleuth, if the main character acts like a know it all, it’s an instant turn off but Elise in this one is pretty level headed and doesn’t actually try to do it all on her own, like she even mentions in the book to Brad…clues just sort of present themselves in front of her and she just makes the connection.

I liked the dash of romance between Elise and Brad, it was just enough to not end up feeling like it was taking over as the main theme of the book and mystery was given due importance as well. I could not guess the suspense until the very end and the reveal had me go reeling.

So, definitely a good cozy mystery with an even cozier cover!

A Frosty Tale of Scandal: An Angel Lake Mystery, Ceecee James’ sixth book in the Walking Calamity Cozy Mystery series, finds Elise Pepper and fiancé officer Brad Carter having a date night at the ice skating rink. They were looking for a fun, relaxing evening but what they found was a corpse.

The dead man was a prominent banker from a wealthy family. There were rumors that he had stooped to unscrupulous tactics, even putting some folks out of business. To say he was unliked was an understatement, and there were too many suspects to count.

When Elise learns that the dead man was the uncle of her coworker Sue Christoph and she has the occasion to visit Sue’s family when accompanying Sue to a family dinner, new puzzle pieces come into play.

With many twists and turns along the way, including Elise and Brad’s wedding, a most unexpected conclusion comes along. This is an interesting series. I did enjoy the read and recommend it.

Elise Pepper works for a chiropractor in Angel Lake with her friend and co-worker Sue. Elise is dating Brad a police officer at Angel Lake Police Department. While Elise and Brad ice skate on the ice rink they discover the dead body of Roger Hamilton a sixty-three-year-old banker who owns Hamilton Security Bank. Elise finds out that Sue was related to Mr. Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton’s family is fighting over his will and an illegitimate son suddenly appears out of nowhere. The local high school king and queen of the Winter’s Ball are also suspects in the murder. It seems that everyone in town would benefit from Mr. Hamilton’s death. Elise tries to help Lucy a sixteen-year-old runaway on the street with her driving lessons while also investigating why Roger was murdered. I really enjoyed this wonderful cozy mystery novel.

The time has come for Elise to begin planning her wedding and her best friend Vi is chomping at the bit to get things started. A new body and a new mystery are taking up Brad and Elise's time. Vi seems to have some issues going on too. the question is can they find the killer, solve the mystery and plan the wedding before it ruins the friendship.
I really enjoy the series and I love the book covers. They are beautiful.
Another good mystery for this series and a strong plot. This has not been my favorite of the series but a good book. I enjoy the strong character development that has happened and that the characters are so real. The plot is strong. The reading is easy as the flow of the book is smooth. I recommend the series to my Cozy Mystery friends.

Another cozy mystery that I zipped through. Elise works in a chiropractor's office in a small town and is engaged to a police officer. On a date at a skating rink Elise and Brad discover a dead body sitting on a Zamboni. The dead man is an owner of a local bank with shady practices. With a list of suspects - his greedy family, his young wife, an illegitimate son and the nephew of a local restaurant owner who is losing her restaurant because of a balloon payment loan from the bank Elise helps solve the murder in between planning a wedding with the help of her friend, Vi and being a mother to a homeless teen whom she rescued from the streets while her mother is in rehab. Truly enjoyed this book, I want to go back and read the five before this one.

I purchased The Frosty taste of Scandal by Cee Cee James and this review was given freely.
I think this is her best story yet. Two love stories, Lucy reuniting with her Mom, and a Murder mystery. Elise solves a murder while preparing for her wedding to Brad, teaching 16 year old Lucy to drive and trying to help her coworker, her best friend Vivian, and a local icon with crisis of their own. beware of the foreshadowing and be read for a surprise at the end.
This review reflects editing and not the excellence of the tale.

Murder can be cold as ice

Ceecee James continues her Angel Lake series with The Frosty Taste of Scandal. A good book that continues the story of Elise, Brad and Lavina. Engaged Elise and Brad are trying to have a date night, only to have Elise stumble upon a dead body. Too little time and so much to do. Can Elise get everything done? Her best friend, Lavina wants her to go wedding dress shopping, Brad just wants to get married and Elise wants to solve the murder. If you like a quick read with a surprise ending, pick this book.

Frosty Taste

I thoroughly enjoy CeeCee James' books. The characters come alive on paper. She brings out real happenings in one's life. In this story, Lucy's Mom's addiction an rehab and it's affects on Lucy really struck a cord.

The death of Mr. Hamilton aka Mr Ice brought out many twists and turns. Just when the reader believes he/she has figured out who the killer it, bam you're wrong.

This is one of the intriguing page turners that a reader must complete entirely before putting the book down.

Elise is on an ice-skating date with her fiance Brad when she finds a dead body sitting on the Zamboni. She seems to get involved in criminal investigations by accident even with a lot of other things on her plate. She and Brad are getting married in three weeks, her foster daughter is doing well, but has needs, and she's working and helping her friends with their problems.
This is a cute and quick read. Elise is a likable and quirky heroine. The murder mystery is secondary to everything else going on in her life but ties the story together. And there's a wedding!

This was a romantic mystery and obviously not the first in the series. First one I've read though. It was obvious because of the way people were referred to out of the blue as if we should know who they are already. But it didn't matter for the plot of this book.

It is a pretty simply plotted story. It almost seemed like the book was too short to do either the mystery or the romance justice. But it was a nice little read if you want something light. It was not a dark story even though the mystery was a murder.

And it was clean.

This is the first one of CeeCee James’ cozy mysteries I’ve read, and I’m certainly going to read more. Perfect entertainment for a cold winter’s day, with the appropriate Christmas atmosphere, lovable protagonists and an intriguing murder case. Our little grey cells don’t get overstrained trying to figure out the mystery, and there’s enough room for a bit of romance and heart-warming human relationships as well.

This was the first book in the series that I have read, since it was provided free through Amazon. The final chapter was the most remarkable. However, I felt that there was a lot missing. But maybe it wouldn't if I had read the first part of the series.

The suspects and motives for the murder were plenty, the twists interesting, and the conclusion a surprise. It just didn't knock my socks off.

This was a clean tale, that was able to stand on its own. There was an H.E.A.

This was the finale of the series and ties up lingering questions. Elise, the heroine, is always getting involved in her fiance's murder inquires. Although she has a good instinct about finding clues, she's not so good about deducing what they mean. It's topsy-turvy as always, but there are some great moments of mature relating to friends and family that keep Elise's world balanced. I won't tell the end because that would spoil the fun. A great cozy read.

Compelling!

Poor Elise! So much to deal with all at once- planning a wedding, teaching Lucy to drive, figuring out what’s going on with her best friend, & oh yeah, trying to solve a murder! There are quite a few plot twists & turns that kept me hooked. But the absolute best part of this book - the ending!!!! That’s what made this a not miss read.

Loved loved loved this book!

I can’t imagine a better Christmas read! Elise finds a dead body (of course!) and can’t let it rest til she solves it. This book has more happy endings than most cozy’s. It has several stories within the story. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

A Wonderful Book

I chose this rating because this was a wonderful mystery. It was well written and more to come. They mystery of the murderer and all of the clues whether they led to dead ends or to the killer and how Elise didn't want to get involved, but was involved the whole time. The love for the teenager was good to make it a real family story.

Light, but Confusing Read

There were a few annoying editing errors, but the main reason I only gave this book 3 stars was that it felt to me like it couldn't make up its mind whether to be a mystery or light romantic read. Neither was very imaginative. I do like the characters, but there just wasn't enough to interest me in reading anything else in the series.

Quick but good cozy mystery. A young woman and her police office boyfriend find a dead body at the skating rink. Between planning their wedding, helping the foster girl who lives with her, and helping friends, they need to solve the mystery.

Clues keep showing up around her and finally she puts everything together. Good characters, good mystery.

Just ok.

I have not read any of the other books in this series so I really wasn’t interested in all the wedding preparations, which took up most of the book. The murder plot however, was complicated and interesting. Just too little of it. Probably won’t read any more I. This series.
