Secret Santa

Rate this book
Keeping secrets is never a good way to start a relationship...

Theo hardly has time to date. Between work and caring for his four-year-old son there aren’t many hours left over. He’s lonely though, so he joins a hook-up app and starts chatting to a guy called Luke. Luke seems friendly and they arrange to meet. Theo doesn’t mention that he has a child. It’s early days and he’s worried about putting Luke off before they get to know each other.

Luke is currently working as Santa at the local shopping mall. He figures Theo never has to know. Christmas will be over soon and Luke will move on to a new, less embarrassing job. He’s surprised when Theo and a little boy visit Santa one afternoon. Theo doesn’t recognise Luke, and Luke realises he’s not the only one with a secret.

Despite misgivings on both sides, they start dating, and the chemistry is amazing. But as Christmas approaches their secrets pile up like colourful packages under the tree. If they’re not careful, they’ll lose the best gift of all—each other.

NO:

YES:

- two guys hoping to find more than a quick shag through a hookup app

- cute kid

Santa likes the naughty boys too, and Luke has high hopes for the Geeky Guy he meets on Grindr.

When Luke realizes Theo is keeping a secret, he decides to let Theo tell him when he's ready. Unfortunately, small deceptions spiral out of control, and Santa is outed by a dinosaur!

Never fear! Open communication & honesty save the day. *gasps* You don't say?

Secret Santa is a charming, cozy story, as sweet as a gingerbread latte but with a deliciously sexy flair.

I've been a fan of Jay Northcote's writing from the very beginning. He writes uniquely British stories about ordinary blokes doing ordinary things but finding extraordinary love.

Cheers! I'll drink to that.

This one started out pretty slow for me, as the guys kept lying by omission or flat out telling one another untruths.

Once they finally had their "coming clean" chat in the park, after the truth was out and the trust repaired, I enjoyed the story much more.

Theo was a 29 y.o. IT geek at the Apple store in the mall, but also the father of 4 y.o. Archie. We were told that Archie was "the result of a drunken experiment between two friends," but I *reaaaaaaally* wanted more details there, since there's zero indication that Theo was anything other than 103% gay. Much like myself. :- P

Also 29, Luke was temporarily working the holidays playing Santa at the mall, before starting his training as a pharmacy adviser.

Neither had been lucky in the love department, but both were hopeful that this time might be different. So, of course, they started building their relationship on the lies that I previously mentioned. *sigh*

Other than cheating and "the big misunderstanding," deceit is one of my least favorite plot devices, so I was glad when the lies were finally revealed, and they their relationship began moving forward on an honest footing.

I especially enjoyed the parts where "Santa", and later Luke (out of costume), began bonding with Archie, working toward creating their own little, happy family.

This story had very little actual angst, and the steam was pretty decent, so I'd rate it at around 3.5 stars.

This was a cute short story. Theo and Luke were your regular characters, no millionaires or princes or hermits, just regular characters who wanted a chance to date and tried to find a dateable guy on Grindr. The chemistry they had just sparked, and we had a surprisingly articulate and well-spoken Archie! Had fun while reading it.

This is a cute sweet Christmas read about two men meeting on Grindr both looking for more than just a quick hookup but they discover dating is harder than they expected.
Luke is lonely and wants more so when he meets Theo on Grindr he’s excited. Theo has a young son Archie but he wants someone special in his life, could Luke be that someone?
These two are both nice guys but lies and omissions could shatter the relationship before it really gets going.

I liked both Luke and Theo but I loved Archie, I mean seriously put a cute adorable child in a book and I’m sold.

This is a nice little Christmas romance.

A very nice read. Very realistic and sweet.

Theo and Luke, two characters with secrets, looking for that special person meant to be the one. That's what we have here, a drama free Christmas tale of two guys falling in love and trying to fit in each other's life.

Jay Northcote delivers a story that felt very real, they felt very real. Ordinary guys, with normal lives and everyday problems. Two sweet men with average jobs, troubles in the dating game and some secrets.
Don't you worry because those secrets, the misunderstandings between them, are not heavy stuff difficult to solve that requires tears from the reader. No. We're talking about little lies (or not that little but understandable in the beginning of a relationship). This is done to make you feel good, to make you smile and to make you wish the best for the couple. Two lonely guys, one Christmas Eve, the weeks previous to that and the forever expected to be. Sounds good, right?

This book is out tomorrow and you should give it a go if you're in the mood of a Christmas story, because is cute, well written, light and a really quick read full of smiles, texting and some good sexy moments.

I thought this was pretty cute, despite the over abundance of miscommunication. Or just plain lack of communication.

I thought Luke was a bit of a douche at first, but I warmed to him by the end.

Not bad for my first holiday read of the season.

Luke and Theo are cute, individually and together. They are both genuine guys and the way they meet felt quite realistic - self doubts and all. Although I maybe didn't feel the earth move between them, they were sweet, hot and very 'normal' (in the best sense, I assure you)
The 'angsty bit' caused very minor palpitations and was resolved in an eye-blink - which - I guess - is deliberate and fitting, considering it's a Christmas novella.

A pleasant read!

There are some authors who you can rely on for a good festive story no matter what and Jay is one of those.

His latest offering has a bit more of a twist to it than the usual with each of the protagonists hiding something from the other. It's not unnecessary angst for the sake of drama though.

It felt totally believable that Theo wouldn't want to mention his son Archie on a first date and that Luke would be embarrassed to admit he'd seen them while playing Santa.

And, speaking off children, Archie was a 'real' character too. By that I mean he wasn't written as some uber genius overly advanced for his age child. He developed a great relationship with Luke and I loved his enthusiasm about his Santa pressies.

This is a moderately steamy book but the big scene which occurs on Christmas Day is truly delicious, involving as it does a candy cane coloured glass dildo!

Cute, easy reading. This captures the awkwardness of internet dating really well. The story is kind of slow, sweet, very low angst. The premise is fun. I’ll be looking differently at Santa’s now!

I enjoyed this Christmassy M/M romance a good deal — probably more than I was expecting, if I’m being quite honest.

Theo and Luke meet on Grindr, both men looking for something deeper and more long-lasting than your average Grindr hook-up. When they get chatting and realise that their immediate relationship goals align, they decide to plan a date, seeing as how they live quite close to one another and seem to have enough in common to give the face-to-face thing a crack.

Problem is, both men are keeping secrets about pretty major aspects of their lives.

Firstly, Theo decides to withhold the fact that he has a four-year-old son who lives with him part time, preferring to make sure that Luke is even worth getting serious with before he potentially scares him away too early with the news of a kid.

Then, there’s the little fact that Luke is working as Santa at the local mall for the holidays, a truth he’s at first embarrassed to admit too soon. But just before Theo and Luke meet for the first time, Theo and his son Archie come to visit Santa, and having shared online photos, Luke immediately recognises Theo and realises little Archie is his child.

Luke, not wanting to confront his potential new boyfriend in a big secret-keeping lie, decides to wait and continue dating Theo, hoping that Theo will open up to him when he’s ready.

So, there’s a fair bit of non-harmful deception going on here, which bothered me a bit at first, simply because it’s not really something I enjoy in my romances, however innocent and well-meaning it may have been in this particular case. Thankfully, I understood and related to both characters and their personal reasoning for their fibs, big and small, so I was able to enjoy their budding relationship without having the inevitable reveal and possible fallout affect my enjoyment.

In truth, I actually believe this story was at its strongest in its final quarter. I ended up loving how Theo and Luke came together once all the pesky hoodwinking was over with, finally demonstrating a mature level of communication that was worthy of their age and their relationship goals. It also didn’t hurt that Luke’s bonding scenes with little Archie provided plenty of swoon-worthy material, for Theo and me both.

Overall, this was a sweet, sexy, and honest look at what the dating world can be like, warts and all. I appreciated the Christmastime setting and I ultimately enjoyed the slow-build of Theo and Luke’s relationship, from awkward and questioning, to hopeful and passionate and everything in-between.

Secret Santa conjures images of mistletoe, presents, and being merry -- ho ho ho!!! Jay Northcote gifts us all with a low angst Christmas story about getting a boyfriend for Christmas. The holiday just wouldn't be same without Jay's style of feel-good cheer!

Luke and Theo both have secrets. Not huge secrets, but it's enough to make things awkward for a bit there once things are in the open.

You see, Theo is a single dad. He co-parents with his friend Caroline, and has his son, Archie, for three days a week. Dating has been an issue, for Theo, who has found that many men his age don't seem to want to date a guy with a kid. So Theo keeps mum about his son when he goes out with Luke.

Luke has a secret of his own, though. He knows that Theo has a kid because Theo and Archie came to see Santa...and that would be Luke, unbeknownst to Theo.

I enjoyed the story, though I would not have said no to a touch more tension. The smexy-times were plenty smexy and their chemistry was sizzling. I'm not hugely a fan of kids in my stories, but it's Christmas, and if ever there were a holiday for kids, I'd say Christmas is it. I was happy to see that Archie didn't take over the story, though.

So, if you're in the mood for a sexy, low-angst holiday read, Secret Santa is sure to fit the bill.

*** If you haven't read a book by this amazing author, you are missing out !
A sweet British Christmas romance ! Our two men are looking for more than a hook up.
Theo, 29, IT Specialist,

has a 4 yr. old son, Archie, that he shares custody with Caroline. But Theo gets lonely and searches for a long term relationship.
Luke, 29, is filling in as a mall Santa

until his permanent pharmacy job begins. He too would like a steady boyfriend.
They meet online and set up to meet for coffee, but the first date cancels because Archie is sick. But, Theo hasn't told Luke about his son yet; they haven't even met. He wants to wait til they know each other a bit. Now, Luke is also not telling everything. He's embarrassed to be a mall Santa, so he didn't plan to tell Theo his secret either.

These two men are terrific, and we like each one, and see that they'll be great together. It's not insta-love, but a slower build up with their untruths hovering.

This is a wonderful story from Jay Northcote, with terrific characters, a cute story, and super hot sexiness.

Great holiday fun, trains, stuffed animals, and the charming tea drinking lovers. Beautiful.
Highly recommended. ENJOY !

He's making a list...checking it twice...

Theo’s a single dad who really doesn’t have time for relationships between sharing parenting duties with his son’s mom and working as any parent especially any single parent knows there isn’t a lot of time left in the day…mind you that doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t like a relationship, but Theo’s not a hook-up kind of guy and it’s hard to find someone who wants a relationship when you’ve got a 4 year old, so when he starts chatting on-line with a guy named Luke putting it out there that he’s a dad logically doesn’t seem like it should be the first things he tells Luke about himself. Not that he’s not going to tell him but maybe he could just give them a little time for Luke to find out some other stuff about him first.

This would all work well if Luke wasn’t working as Santa at the local shopping mall…the mall where Theo takes his adorable son to see Santa and this is where things get awkward. Theo’s got a secret and Luke knows but Theo doesn’t know that Luke knows and Luke really likes Theo so he’s sure that if they can just get through the holiday everything will sort itself out and maybe Theo never needs to know that Luke accidentally found out his secret…awkward moments so many awkward moments and I loved them all.

I’m not normally a fan of miscommunication type stories but this one was definitely an exception. Theo and Luke are so new to each other and each of them end up having a secret but there’s no malice or bad intent as to why they each have a secret and much of their awkwardness came from this. The awkwardness between them both in person and when they were texting while at times it had me rolling my eyes in it’s own way it also felt natural…Theo and Luke have just met, they’re getting to know each other and because they’re each keeping their own secret at times they’ve put themselves in a position where they’re not sure how interpret what the other person is saying.

I remember back in the day when I was first dating my husband having a phone conversation or two like this where one of us wasn’t quite sure what the other was really trying to say or not say and sometimes things got stilted and awkward and not because one or both of us wasn’t interested no it was more a case of that like Theo and Luke, we were interested and found ourselves being very cautious because things were new and we really liked each other and wanted to be care not to say something that would scare the other person away before we had a chance. So maybe the reasons were different but at times our behavior was for me really reminiscent of how Theo and Luke were at times.

Don’t get me wrong this was not an over the top, angst ridden story. Theo and Luke trying and chatting…so maybe some stilted and awkward conversations but the end result was awkward or not they led to more communication and honesty.

‘Secret Santa’ is a sweet, low angst story about two ordinary guys who unknowingly have the same Christmas wish. A wish just needs an open, honest conversation and a little bit of Christmas magic to come true. A lovely story to warm the heart on a cold winters day.

Because this is a holiday season and it started well, and Jay Northcote is one of those authors who can write the best holiday stories. When Jay offered me this book, my hands were eagerly grab Theo and Luke's story.
This time, it's about family time!

My heart did some tug of war every time Luke or Theo met and still cannot revealed their secrets to each other. I know it's silly, but also very reasonable. While Theo wanted to 'see; where their relationship leads before he could open his secret, Luke also still cannot tell Theo about his 'job'.
By time, they're getting close and the need to tell the truth keep nagging them, something's happened accidentally. Which was good, actually. Thanks to Archie!

This is a very sweet and adorable Christmas story, and Jay did it again, very well indeed Mister!
I recommend this for your cozy Christmas read, you won't be disappointed! jay always writes the best Christmas stories, and I always love Christmas stories...

Jay Northcote's book are more miss than hit lately. For some reason the writing feels different these days. Or I am different, I don't know.

I've had the same problem with the last couple of books of him. The dialogue feels so strained. It doesn't flow nicely. Even the texting felt super awkward and not at all like the two MCs had a lot of (online) chemistry.

Get Lucky: Thanks. You’re hot.
Geek Guy: Sorry it took a while. I got distracted. And thanks. You’re hot too.

This made me cringe. I felt like I was reading a conversation between 12 year olds.

I might just have to accept that Jay Northcote is no longer the writer for me.

Normally I stay away from holiday romance stories because of the fast pace and how quickly the relationship progresses. This time though I decided to make an exception and try "Secret Santa" and I'm so glad that I did!

The relationship between Luke and Theo was believable and there was no insta-love, which is one of my biggest niggles along with ista-relationship when I'm reading a romance story. In this short,Christmas story the two characters meet online and decide to try a date and see if it will lead to a relationship or even just a friendship. Through most of the story neither is sure about what he wants from the other but their uncertainty is understandable since the story spans just about three weeks and they have only gone to a few dates. It's normal for them to feel the situation out and try to make up their minds as they learn more things about the other.

There are a lot of secrets between them in this story which isn't an ideal start for a relationship but their reasons for omitting the thruth or even flat out lying are clear and justifiable. It's still early stages in their relationship so each of them is keeping some cards close to his chest for fear of what the other would think. Of course, both of them know that at some point they are going to have to come clean and neither of them is trying to decieve the other. They are trying to give a chance to a new connection and in the process they hide the things that they feel would make their start more difficult. I don't agree with Theo's decision to hide the fact that he has a son but I can understand why he did it.

Archie, Theo's four year old son, is a big part of the story and the reason for many of their lies. He is present in the story -as he should be- and not just a name in the periphery. Some times I thought he spoke and behaved as if he was older but I don't have any experience with kids so what do I know? In general I liked him and I was glad to read a story with a family trope.

I liked the relationship that Theo had with Archie's mom and the way they had managed to co-parent him so smoothly. They had great communication and both put Archie first in their lives.

The end is a solid HEA which is delivered to us in a sweet epilogue about a year after Luke and Theo met. It was nice to see them settled and secure in their family. Also, I liked that Mr Purple is mentioned again here, he was Santa's first present to Archie and he became his favorite stuffed animal. Surprisingly, he was in quite a few scenes in the story, helping in the development of Archie's character. It's details like that that make me like a story even more.

All in all, "Secret Santa" is a happy and light read. It's quick, with no angst and perfect for the holidays. 4 stars

Secret Santa is a wonderful Christmas love story of how a cute little boy and a Santa costume brings two lonely guys together at Christmas.

I really liked Luke and Theo they are getting to know each other but they are both lying, what will happen when the truths are revealed?

Little Archie is so cute, every Christmas story needs a cute little child.

This is a fun sexy Christmas read my first of 2017 and my promise for 2028 is to read more Jay Northcote.

God, dating is awkward.

And here's a book that perfectly captures that whole does he like me, why didn't he message me, self-conscious torture one engages in during the early days of seeing someone you like.

To be clear, that's not really a point in this book's favor, because I hate that part. It's the worst.

Then there's the question of When To Tell The Guy You're Seeing About The Dealbreakers. Dealbreakers. It's the shit you have that when people find out about it they ghost you. Kids are pretty high up on that list.

So with all of that, it was a good thing that the characters did have some chemistry, because the set-up is just awkward turtle all the way down. There also wasn't nearly as much angst as some authors would have wrung out of it, which is one thing that I appreciate about Jay's writing. For the most part, characters act like mature, level-headed adults when tough situations arise instead of blowing crap out of proportion.

It wasn't my favorite book of his, but it was still a decent read.

This was a cute holiday romance but I didn't love it. In the past, I've liked many of Jay's books partly because they are often about ordinary guys in real life. Recently, though, I've found the characters in his books to be almost too ordinary, kinda boring in fact. In Secret Santa, I didn't find anything terribly witty or interesting in the early texts and communications between the two guys, but there is lots of awkwardness. I guess I didn't really feel too much of a connection to them personally or feel any sparks in their relationship. Probably just a me thing. Cute concept though.

Keeping secrets is never a good way to start a relationship

Single father Theo has no time to date between his own job and taking care of his four-year-old, Archie. He then tries the land of dating app and starts chatting with a guy called Luke. On their early conversation, Luke makes a comment that he is not too fond of kids. Theo doesn't know what to do with this, because him and Archie is a package deal. So Theo decides not to mention about his son until he is sure about Luke.

After being let go from his last job and before he starts a new job in January, Luke is working as Santa at a shopping mall. That's when he is surprised to see Theo coming with his son. Of course, dressing as Santa, Theo doesn't recognize Luke. Luke thinks that Theo will tell him about his son when he's ready.

Well, for one I'm glad that the 'secret' only last until about 2/3rd of the book, because I would've probably be frustrated if it is revealed near the end. I have a thing with holiday stories that involve kids -- and this one is no different.

I loved both men -- I thought Theo was lovely with Archie, and despite his grumbling in the beginning, Luke wasn't such a bad Santa.

Overall, this is a low angst and lovely holiday novella. Sure, when Theo realizes that Luke knows all along that he has a son, they have a little argument. But everything clears up pretty quick.

And the ending is wonderful.

I always look forward to Northcote's annual holiday novella. I have faith it will be an enjoyable read and make me happy. This year was not a disappointment. White Christmas and white lies are not the best combination but Theo and Luke connect through an online dating service and have a few hiccups early on. It wasn't intentional. One of those unfortunate information omissions that began the trickle effect of misgivings. But as we know, one lie leads to another and then another...and the molehill becomes a mountain.
Theo is lonely and looking for his special someone. Dating isn't as easy as he would like for it to be but he has a precious priority that always comes first...his son. Archie is four, cute as can be and sometimes a dating challenge. Theo wants to know the guy is worthy before he introduces anyone to Archie. Past disappointments have made him leery about immediate disclosure of his fatherhood status. When he meets Luke he instantly feels the spark and the potential for more. But he hesitates when it comes to showing all his cards. Better to make sure, right? Four is a dicey age when it comes to visiting Santa but Archie is quickly won over and begs to revisit. So they do. Too bad he never imagined the sweet man in the red suit is concealing the sexy man of his dreams. No misunderstanding but a smidge of deceit that threatens everything they could have been before they even have a chance.

What's to like: Jay always delivers when it comes to the writing. It's solid, sexy and fun. Though online dating appears to have its struggles (can't say I have any personal experience here) it can certainly end with success. And I know Northcote will gift us the happily ever after I want. So I don't mind pushing through their waffling and wavering to get to the good stuff. Even if I have to suspend belief and imagine that Theo wouldn't recognize Luke in his suit. I would think or hope that he would but didn't mind pretending that he didn't. When it comes to my holiday stories I'm looking for starry-eyed and warm fuzzy feelings...and I'm happy to say our Secret Santa brought that and more.

What's to love: Both Theo and Luke are lovable guys. Archie, Theo's son, was a result of a drunken encounter between friends. I liked Caroline (Archie's mum) and found their relationship and shared custody refreshing. Luke is tired of the dating scene and ready to settle down but not quite thinking children...yet. But then he meets Theo and is confident they have a great connection. When he secretly discovers the plus one in Theo's life he's a little unsettled. Why would Theo keep something so big and important from him? He should get out before he sinks any deeper. Too bad sinking deep and getting stuck is the thing he wants the most.

Beware of: Secrets, an adorable stuffy loving little boy, and steamy dad time...with a candy cane you won't forget!

This book is for: If you are looking for a low-angst, high-sensual holiday story with  British flare, this Secret Santa has your name on it. Enjoy!
