Best Travel Book at the 2018 Colorado EVVY Awards What happens when you wake up one day in your comfortable, climate-controlled, corporate career in middle management and say, "Enough! Money isn't everything. I want to make a difference in our world."This stream of thought launched 47-year-old Delta Donohue into an adventure that would last over seven years and involve volunteering in an orphanage in India, elephants and camels, starting a social enterprise that partners with village women, and more elephants and camels - along with several monkeys and one particular cow.The First Taste Belongs to the Gods is a deeply personal collection of stories and poetic reflections chronicling these years of going back and forth to India and the interior journey it prompted. This unconventional, poignant travelogue will have you laughing, crying and asking yourself, "What life do I dream of?"
I really appreciated this book! I have traveled in India, and very few books make me (happily) feel like I am there. I could almost smell the chapatis cooking as I read this book. The sketches and poems are equally wonderful, and all are evocative of Mother India. Highly recommended.
Wife Judy and I worked for gospel for Asia, selling books, fund raising for several years. Never stepped foot into India but came to love it. Am far too old to attempt the trip at this point but am seriously tempted after reading ,the first taste. It throws an entirely different perspective over India from anything else I,v read on the subject. That perspective I would leave Christian love. I couldn't,t put this one down. Loved it.
Absolutely delightful and insightful. The prose describes various events and is interwoven with poetry that reveals not only the story but also the spirit of the events.
