“Fans will want their Mongo prescriptions filled” as the circus-performer-turned-private-eye uncaps some pharmaceutical monkey business (Booklist). With a genius IQ, a past career as a circus acrobat, and a black belt in karate, criminology professor Dr. Robert Frederickson—better known as “Mongo the Magnificent”—has a decidedly unusual background for a private investigator. He also just so happens to be a dwarf. On the eve of Thanksgiving, a murderous maniac with an ice pick has gripped New York City, killing at random and leaving terror in his wake. But despite the threat of the “Iceman,” Mongo is more troubled by the sudden appearance of the neighborhood crazy lady on his doorstep. Normally, “Mama Spit” is as ornery as they come, but the polished and polite woman before him now bears little resemblance to the creature infamous for spewing vulgarity at everyone she meets. Mama claims a strange man gifted her with a bag of pills just before his untimely death—miracle pills that have made her as normal as the day is long. Soon Mongo blows the lid off a conspiracy involving experimental drugs, escaped mental patients, and a government cover-up. But if he isn’t careful, he could hit his own expiration date . . . Bleeding in the Eye of a Brainstorm is the 13th book in the Mongo Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Chesbro was born in Washington, D.C. He worked as a special education teacher at Pearl River and later at rockland Psychiatric Center, where he worked with trouble teens. Chebro was married and had one daughter and two step-daughters.
I really enjoyed this mystery! Lots of humour and interesting characters. People have been selected and experimented upon in a local mental hospital. A killer is on the rampage. Is the CIA involved? Can the perpetrators been found before all these people are killed? I will look for more from this author.
Classic Mongo mystery/thriller. Just enough science ideas to make it interesting and enough characterization and emotion to Mande it difficult to put down.
With the holiday season approaching, New York City is in the grips of fear of an extremely effective serial killer who uses an ice pick to dispatch his victims even striking within crowds of people. Dr, Robert 'Mongo' Frederickson gets an early holiday surprise of his neighborhood's resident schizophrenic (dubbed 'Mama Spit' since she spits and curses at anyone that approaches her) sitting on his front steps strangely lucid and asking for help. It's all a start for another adventure pitting 'Mongo' in a race against time to save lives.
Reread this after a span of about 10 years. Classic Mongo mystery. Mongo the Magnificent, PhD in Criminology, martial arts master, circus acrobat and a dwarf, investigates a drug that has cured a schizophrenic street person named "Mamma Spit". A man apparently handed her a bag of the drug and forced her to swallow one before he was killed by two "young people". As usual, the villain is the CIA. Still a good readable suspense, thriller, mystery.
particularly liked this one. Plot as far fetched as ver, but very neatly done and the vulnerability of the characters and the christmas setting heightened the effect
