After reading Walk that mile I have the strong urge to go on a roadtrip!!!
Normally that would be nothing out of the ordinary. Apart from the fact that I absolutely detest being in confined spaces particularly cars for hours on end. Come to think about it, maybe that is because both I and my dog get carsick rather easily. (As you can imagine, family vacations by car are a blast.)
So, I take purpledaisy being able to make me actually want to do something I should hate as no small achievement!
But step by step:
The plot:
Harry and Louis have never met but thanks to Captain Niall, they find themselves in the same car going on a route 66 roadtrip from Chicago to LA. And of course, some funny situations and a bit of romance ensue.
There are also a lot of fun tropes included. From strangers-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, to the roadtrip and the sightseeing Walk that mile has it all. Even a little bit of fake dating is involved. And because I am a sucker for these tropes, it is not hard to guess that I was living for them.
The characters:
Harry and Louis as the main characters are great!!! Particularly because they seem utterly human. They change their minds on a regular basis and sometimes their actions don’t really make sense (but let’s be real, whose do?).
They are also funny and goofing around, all the while having deep and serious conversations through which they get to know each other and we them. And overall, the interactions between the two of them are, to put it simply, gold!!!
The best thing, however, is that the characters don’t stay stagnant, but we can see them changing and developing in almost every chapter. Until, at the end, they are different, better people while also staying true to themselves.
The romance:
Same as the characters, their relationship is always changing. At the start, it almost seems like they want to agitate each other. But don’t worry, it isn’t long until the mutual pining and sexual tension take over. Both of which are done superb I might add!
But even when that is clear to us (and should be to them), they tiptoe from one misunderstanding to the next. Because even though they are communicating, both of them are either too proud or too afraid to spell the words out. Which combined with concentrating more on each other’s words than their actual actions, can be frustrating at times.
But all the back and forth and angst keep the readers on edge and their sweet/cute/gold interactions make more than up for it!!!
And the smut isn’t exactly bad either;)
The atmosphere:
My family travels a lot and while I have over 25 countries under my belt, I’ve never been to the US.
But I feel like I have!
It feels like I visited the world’s biggest ketchup bottle or the lightning field with them.
Like I drove through never ending deserts and cornfields as well.
Like I also went horseback riding through the midwestern wilderness.
Purpledaisy’s wonderful writing and vivid descriptions brought those places to life!!!
A nice added touch were the links in my copy (downloaded from AO3) which directed you to a blog with a picture collage from each day and some quotes from the chapter!
I really love when something like that is included because it immerses you into the story even more and shows how much the author loved writing it.
Deciding a rating was one of the easiest things I’ve ever done!
