12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady's Fight for Redemption

Rate this book
The thrilling behind-the-scenes account of how the NFL's most sensational scandal culminated in sports history's greatest comeback, featuring dozens of exclusive interviews with Patriots players -- including Tom Brady himself.

In January 2015, rumors circulated that the New England Patriots -- a team long suspected of abiding by the "if you ain't cheating you ain't trying" philosophy -- had used under-inflated footballs in their playoff victory against the Indianapolis Colts. As evidence began to build, however, a full on NFL investigation was launched, exploding an unsubstantiated rumor into an intense scandal that would lead news coverage for weeks. As shockwaves rippled throughout the NFL system, the very legitimacy of one of the league's most popular teams and their star quarterback began to erode, even as the Patriots and Brady went on to win that year's Super Bowl.

But as the celebrations gave way to the offseason, the investigation only intensified, reopening old wounds between the Patriots' powerful owner, Robert Kraft, and the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell. Brady was devastated and seemingly more nervous in front of a judge that on a game-winning drive.

When the dust settled, Brady would be able to play again - but only after watching the first four games of the 2016 season from his couch. The pressure couldn't have been more Brady's legacy was at stake. If he failed to return to his usual self, all the critics and even the history books would have to put a giant asterisk next to his name, signifying one he was a cheater.

12 is the propulsive story of this gritty comeback. It's a drama that unfolds in the locker room, the court room, and under the brightest lights in all of sports -- the Super Bowl. Now for the first time, readers will have an exclusive look into Tom Brady's experience and the NFL's shocking strangle-hold on their players. With unprecedented access to Brady himself, his teammates, and his lawyers, we will see just how a football legend went up against one of the largest corporations in the world to stage the greatest comeback in NFL history and emerge a god of the gridiron.

Tom Brady has been the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots since the middle of the 2001 season. Since that point, he has led the team to eight Super Bowls, winning five of them and is now considered by many to be the greatest quarterback of all time. He and his team have also encountered their share of controversy. One of these episodes, widely known as “Deflategate”, had a profound effect on Brady, the Patriots and the commissioner’s office of the NFL. This controversy is chronicled in this book by investigative journalists Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge.

The book’s premise is that Brady had to not only endure the shame of being suspended for four games at the start of the 2016 season, he was given this suspension with flawed evidence of violating a rule that allegedly is not enforced regularly. Brady was accused of having Patriots’ equipment personnel deflate footballs below the minimum standard set by the league during the 2015 AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. The account of the whole affair – the game, the skullduggery behind the scenes, the investigation by the league and the hearing with lawyers from both the league and the player – is covered in full detail.

However, this fine writing is marred by the blatant bias the authors have for Brady’s case and the vitriol written about the league’s staff and Commissioner Roger Goodell. While Goodell may not be popular with football fans, the unmasked contempt the authors have for his handling of this case is clear. This made the book feel like more of a long editorial piece than an account of the case.

The book also tells brief biographies of Brady, Patriots head coach Bill Belichek and owner Robert Kroft. Also in the book is a recap of Brady’s career as the Patriots quarterback, with recaps of some of his more memorable games such as the “Tuck Rule” game, his first Super Bowl win against the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI and of course, the game in which his redemption came, Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons. The recap of this game was the best football passage in the book, but even here, it was choppy as the description of the game was broken up by numerous sidebar stories about other Patriots players such as James White and Julian Edelman.

Overall, this book covers the main topic, Tom Brady, quite well. But the lack of objectivity plus the jumping from topic to topic made this a less-than-enjoyable read. It does get a favorable rating for the material covered and it is one that Brady and Patriots fans will enjoy, if for no other reason to recap the incredible comeback the team made in Super Bowl LI. If the reader is not a Brady or Patriots fan, then pass on this one.

I wish to thank Little, Brown and Company for providing a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady's Fight for Redemption by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge is a compelling and meticulously researched account of Tom Brady’s journey through the controversial Deflategate scandal and his subsequent return to glory. This book dives deep into the events leading up to the scandal, the intense media scrutiny, the legal battles, and ultimately, Brady's triumphant return to the field, culminating in his remarkable comeback victory in Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons.

As a lifelong Patriots fan and Tom Brady admirer, this book was a thrilling read. Sherman and Wedge expertly capture the drama and emotion surrounding Deflategate, a controversy that I never quite understood. While I believe Brady was involved to some degree, I don’t think he intentionally tried to cheat or cause harm—it seemed more like a preference thing, and I don’t think he realized he was doing anything wrong. The entire incident felt blown out of proportion, especially when compared to the lighter penalties imposed on NFL players guilty of more serious offenses, as the authors poignantly highlight.

The book also beautifully chronicles Brady's resilience and determination during the 2016 season, where, despite his suspension, he led the Patriots to a historic Super Bowl victory against the Falcons. That game, with its thrilling comeback from a 28-3 deficit, remains my favorite Super Bowl of all time, and Sherman and Wedge capture every exhilarating moment with vivid detail.

I absolutely loved the style of this book. The authors’ reporting is engaging and easy to follow while also being incredibly thorough. The book is filled with insights from numerous sources, including players, coaches, and insiders, making you feel like you're right there with them, experiencing every high and low of this unforgettable chapter in football history.

This is a well-researched and compelling book that offers a balanced view of one of the most debated controversies in NFL history. It's a must-read for any Patriots fan or anyone who wants to understand the true story behind Tom Brady’s fight for redemption.

I really liked this book it was everything I could ever ask for in a book of my favorite player. There was so much information so many good and interesting things. It not only gave information about the allegations of recent years. But it also talks about his young years where he showed us his fire and poise to be great. It also gives a much more in depth view of what happened during the events of the allegations and what each little thing did to impact. I was always intruiged and never felt like it was boring or slow I always wanted to read more.

Must read to see both sides

Whether you're a Patriots fan or not, this is a good book to show both sides of what happened.

It shows what Brady and his family went through as well as those who fought for and against him during Deflategate. Please read with an open mind to see and decide what really happened behind the scenes.

HELL YEAH GO PATS

Actually more like 3.5. This book felt almost more like one of those DVDs that comes out after the Super Bowl that reviews the season. Enjoyable and mildly informative, but Pats fans already watched the ending

Loved learning the history of some of the Patriots, Tom, Gliddell, Craft, and other players. There's a lot of details about different game situations that couldn't fully hold my interest.

After a playoff game between the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots during the 2014-15 season, the Patriots were accused by the Colts of deflating the footballs that the Patriots used on offense.

During an NFL game, each team has brand new footballs on their sidelines to be used when the team is on offense. Each team also has access to the footballs before the games, ostensibly to practice with and get used to since they are brand new. The Patriots were accused of deflating the footballs before the game against the Colts. Additionally, the Patriots' quarterback, Tom Brady, was accused of facilitating and directing the possible deflation of the footballs.

After the game was over, the NFL examined the footballs on the Colts' sideline and the Patriots' sidelines. The footballs on the Colts' sidelines were still regulation size, however, all of the footballs on the Patriots' sidelines were smaller than regulation size. It appeared that the footballs on the Patriots' sideline had gotten smaller during the course of the game.

What potential advantage could be gained by deflating footballs? The quarterback could grip the football more easily when the football is smaller. Brady was known to have preferred smaller footballs. In contrast, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, actually likes to throw bigger footballs. So, it can be a matter of personal preference for a quarterback. However, since the NFL stipulates the size for each football used in a game, it would be cheating for a team to deflate the footballs that it uses on offense.

In a press conference, Brady denied having deflated any footballs, as he and the Patriots focused on playing the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl in 2015. It was difficult for Brady and the Patriots to completely move on from the controversy because the media was often asking about it.

Ted Wells was chosen by the NFL to investigate the controversy. At his time, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell gave his state of the union press conference that he gives every year during Super Bowl week. During the press conference, Goodell was asked about the controversy as well. At this time, Brady was interviewed by Bob Costas as well. So, Belicheck, Brady and Goodell were all being asked questions about the the controversy during the biggest week of the NFL's season.

The Patriots would end up defeating the Seahawks 28-24, as Brady played particularly well in the fourth quarter. Brady's passer rating in the fourth quarter was an outstanding 140.7. Brady had once again played his best football when it mattered the most. The Patriots had won a Super Bowl with footballs that were regulation size. So, Brady's supporters saw the victory as a form of vindication. However, the controversy was not going away because the NFL was still investigating the matter.

Wells is described as a meticulous and hard working lawyer who is dedicated to his job. He asked Brady's lawyer for phone records. Finally, Wells released a 243 page report that expressed the NFL's case against Brady. Sherman and Wedge say "Investigators had interviewed nearly seventy witnesses, including the Patriots quarterback and head coach. The report stated that all eleven footballs used by the Patriots in the 2015 AFC title game against the Colts had tested below the minimum air pressure level of 12.5 psi, while the four Colts balls tested measured within the 12.5 to 13.5 psi allowed by the league." This made the Patriots seem guilty of the charge that they deflated the footballs.

After the NFL investigated the matter, it determined that it "was more probable than not" that the Patriots deflated the footballs. The NFL's investigation also concluded that it "was more probable than not" that Brady facilitated or took part in the deflation of the footballs.

Eventually, on September 3, 2016, Brady was suspended by the NFL. This meant that he could not visit the Patriots' stadium or communicate with the players or the staff of the Patriots. The suspension was scheduled to last until October 3, 2016, exactly one month. Brady continued to work out and practice with friends and his personal trainer.

On October 9th, Brady returned to the Patriots for a game against the Cleveland Browns at First Energy Stadium, in Cleveland, Ohio. Brady played well, as he threw for over 400 yards in a Patriots' victory. Many Patriots fans came to the game to support Brady and the Patriots. He continued to play well throughout the season, as the Patriots had another good year. The Patriots would go onto to defeat the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl. Once again, Brady's supporters and the Patriots' fans saw a Super Bowl victory as vindication for both Brady and the Patriots.

The book deals with the deflate controversy and portrays Brady in a positive light. The title "The inside story of Tom Brady's fight for redemption" is an accurate summary of the book. The book portrays Brady as a determined player who fights for his reputation and another chance at winning a championship with the Patriots.

It's a good book for Patriots fans or fans of the NFL.

This book was about Tom Brady's fight to find his way on the football field and to begin his pathway to being the greatest of all time. After he finishes his college career a Patriots scout convinces Bill Belichick to draft Tom in the sixth round in the NFL draft. After Drew Bledsoe suffers an injury Tom steps into the starting quarterback position. For the rest of the season Tom led the Patriots to the Super Bowl to beat the Rams. From there he hasn't lost the job since and he went on to become the greatest of all time. The overall theme of this story is to never give up and to always keep on fighting.
One thing that surprised me the most about this book is how Tom Brady's work ethic never changed when he was the fourth string quarterback. Tom said in an interview, " All I can do is focus on how hard I practice, how much I study, and how prepared I am when I get my snaps. When my time comes, I'll be ready."(71). I would not expect this from a fourth string quarterback at all. He was always working his hardest even though he was not playing at all in the games. Brady was very competitive at everything. When Tom was fighting for a backup job against Damon Hurad and Michael Bishop, Brady was focused on battling it out with the starting quarrerback. Tom said, I am going to beat out Bledsoe, just watch." (74). This was a big thing to say especially because he wasn't even an official backup yet. But this just goes to show how much of a competitor he is and why he loves the game of football so much. When I read this I realized how this is what Tom Brady had to do to get to where he is now. He was not gifted it he earned all of the stuff he was rewarded and he deserves to be the greatest of all time because in my eyes he is the hardest worker of all time.
I thought that this was a very good book. I would recommend this book to any sports lovers or any people who need motivation. This book shows you that if you put the time and effort into something then only good stuff can happen from it. Tom Brady is a very hard worker and all of this hard work got him into the spot he is in right now. I think sports lovers would love this because this is the underdog story everyone loves. Tom was not supposed to be the man to become the greatest but he proved everyone who doubted him wrong and he could tell anyone of those people today that they were wrong because there is no one close to his greatness.

12: The Inside Story Of Tom Brady’s Fight For Redemption
Once I saw the cover of this book I knew I wanted to read it. I saw the mysterious picture of Tom Brady on the cover of the book and I instantly knew it was going to be a good book, which it was. The Inside Story Of Tom Brady’s Fight For Redemption -- this title drew me in even more. The authors of the book, Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, wrote quite a great story of how Tom Brady bounced back from haters, accusations, and even the NFL commissioner.
True stories are always exciting to read. Especially when it’s about the one and only Tom Brady. He was breaking records in the NFL. He was the best, everybody knew it. But not everybody liked it. People were scared of his talent, especially Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner. During the 2015 AFC Championship Game the Patriots were up against the Indianapolis Colts. Everybody wanted Brady and the Patriots to lose. They would do anything to find a reason, so they did. The well known Deflategate happened. The NFL opened an investigation into the allegations against Tom Brady for deflating the footballs. He was proven guilty, kind of. Even though he didn’t do anything wrong. His penalty was that he couldn’t play in the first 4 games of the next season. He overcame that speed bump and came back better than ever.
Tom Brady has been through a lot in regards of people hating him. People call him a cheater and a liar but can’t back it up with facts. At the beginning of Tom Brady’s career he was draft pick 199 in the sixth round, which means he was considered bad. But the Patriots took a chance with him. Brady knew he wasn’t bad. He fought through the people saying he won’t succeed. This book has taught me that even when you’re the greatest and you’re on top of the world, people will always try to drag you down. You have to look past the noise and stay focused.

The book 12 is hard to understand for the average person who doesn’t like football or sports in general. On the other hand, if you enjoy football or love the Patriots like I do, then I really recommend this book for you. The beginning of the book starts out with the history of the NFL and how it all began. It started out a little slow in the beginning because it was almost as if it was a review for me about the early years of NFL. It started to pick up in excitement because of how it went to the game of the deflate-gate where Tom Brady was falsely accused of having the footballs deflated during that game. The reason why this is a problem is that when a football is deflated it’s easier to throw and catch. This then transitions to Tom getting a suspension from four games. This then led to the other teams to think the Patriots were done for this year. Out of nowhere, Jimmy Garoppolo performed the best he could winning three out of the four of those games because of an injury. Near the end, the Patriots had made it to the Superbowl against the Falcons. An amazing turn of events happened that day which marked history for the NFL.
This book shows you to never give up or to judge a book by its cover because that’s what Tom did. He didn’t let the suspension hurt him. This book has become another one of my favorite books alongside Moving The Chains which is another book about the Patriots. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of reading I really enjoyed this one. I’ve grown up playing football and watching the Patriots through the thick and thin. I knew all about the deflate-gate and what went down, but this told me details that I had never known about. Tom Brady will go down as the greatest of all time (GOAT).

OK, so, I’m a semi-rabid Patriots fan and a fully-rabid Tom Brady fan – I think he is exactly what any neutral fan hopes for in a sports icon, and that he was utterly screwed by the NFL for the most petty reasons. Which means this book is perfect for me. It carefully and with reasonable balance traces the origins, context and conclusion of the “Deflategate” silliness for its nearly two year lifespan. It includes commentary from everyone you’d expect, it explains the egregious tactical error perpetrated by Brady’s agent Don Yee, and it expresses what to me is proper outrage at the political machinations on the part of Roger Goodell (he comes off as a coward and a petty, heavily manipulated toady who needs to screw Brady and NE to keep the other, equally petty owners happy). It’s barely a book per se, more like a long, long newspaper article – but that’s fine, that was its raison d’etre. From that perspective, it did the job and got me riled up all over again. FWIW, I’m writing this on 12/31/2018 and yesterday, the Pats clinched a first round playoff bye for the 9th straight year, annihilating the Jets 38-3.

I really liked this book because as an avid Patriots fan it was really enjoyable to read and reflect back on the history of the program. The book explained how the Patriots have built themselves up to one of the best programs in the country. It also gave a great inside scoop of Deflate-Gate and all that Tom Brady went through to maintain his reputation. Any chance that someone got to knock him down a peg he came back as strong as ever. One way someone tried to knock him down was accusing him of destroying his phone because he was hiding something. When in reality he just did what his wife does every time she gets a new phone to try to protect their own family life. He had to stick to what he knew was the truth and hope that the rest of New England would be on his side through the whole thing and his redemption of winning a Super Bowl. Along with dealing with this adversity he had to deal with his mother being very sick and possibly not getting a chance to watch him play in the Super Bowl. The novel was very informative on Tom Brady and gave me a great perspective on all he went through.

12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady's Fight for Redemption by Casey Sherman takes us through the 2015 saga involving the Patriots. If you are a football fan, chances are you know what the deflate gate are. If you live in New England, chances are you took Tom Brady's/ the Patriots side. This book gives us the inside scoop of what was going on during this scandal. We get a behind the scenes look through the deflate gate, to the Super Bowl win.
If you don't like Tom Brady, I don't recommend this book. You might find your self fighting with the author the whole time. But, if you do like Tom Brady, like I do, then I would 100% read this! This book gets Patriots fans pumped up, and reminded of everybody who hates us. When you read this, you relive a travesty for the New England community, with Brady's suspension, to all the negative press surrounding the team, but you also relive the comeback. This takes us back to February 5th, 2017, the greatest Super Bowl win yet. I really enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to all Patriots fans!

I received a while ago this book as an advanced reader's copy and of all the books I've received, this was the most painful books I've ever finished. What I am about to say is the truth....this by far was NOT by far the best superbowl comeback of all time. Yes the Patriots won the Superbowl that year and the year before during the so called "deflate-gate" but by no means was this a comeback. It was so painful hearing all these stories of past athletes whom I've looked up to being the avid sports fan myself and not even ONE of them has experienced a story such as this. I also could totally tell that this book has some rearranged and edited words and at the end of the book, there were no reliable sources given that reflected this monstrosity of an argument. Very poor showing that I painfully have to give 1.5 stars to.

I really enjoyed this book. As someone who lived through most of the events discussed as a Patriots and Tom Brady fan, I found the story engaging and interesting. I knew a lot of the facts about Tom Brady’s rise from a late string quarterback to the best in the game, but this book revealed several things I never heard before about how his leadership was developed. It was also touching to learn more about his relationship with his parents particularly his mother who was battling cancer at the time the book takes place in. This is a must read for Patriot fans and really for any NFL fans who want to see a different perspective.

12 was an absolutely amazing book! I really enjoyed reliving the deflate gate experience. From the Ravens playoff game to the Colts, to the Super Bowl championship the year of Bradys suspension, it was so fun to relive these memories. I also really enjoyed how the book took me behind the scenes and looked deeper into the media portrayals and the way the league operates. I also like the direct quotes form Brady and the team. Overall it was just a really good book and I would absolutely recommend this to any patriots fan or football fan in general!

I’ve been a Patriots fan my whole life so I will admit that my review is biased. I will never forget when Drew Bledsoe was knocked out of that game and how it felt like the whole season had come to an end in that brief moment. Little did we know, right? I’ve rewatched the Super Bowl against Atlanta so many times that I could see the plays so clearly while reading this book. It brought all of the emotions (both good and bad) right back to the surface. For Patriots fans, this is a must read. For Patriots haters, we’re on to Number 7!

I really love any sports nonfiction book about athletes or sports I love, and this one was no different. Wasn’t my favorite, not necessarily a 5 star, but a good branch out for me to sports other than basketball and a cool inside look at Brady’s development and the deflategate. Its ironic, the part of the book that I actually thought was gonna be slow or my least favorite, when they flashbacked to Brady’s coming up instead of the main story, actually turned out to be my favorite cause I’d never really read about that, and definitely wanna check out the other Brady/patriots dynasty books now

Tom Brady needs no redemption. So the title makes no sense to me.
WARNING On the very first page, even before mentioning Tom Brady and his fistfull of Superbowl rings Sherman spoils everything by mentioning Roger "ain't the Governor" Goodell. Way to taint this report on TB12.

I should have won a different book by Sherman. The writing was a pleasure to read, if only Goodell hadn't ruined it. He write about Chara yet?

In January 2015 rumors were made that the Patriots had used under-inflated footballs in their playoff victory against the Indianapolis Colts. This rumor sent a wave of media coverage through the NFL and the news the Patriots and Brady went on to win that year's Super Bowl. 12 is a story about the Patriots organization vs the league and the comeback of the Greatest franchise in football history.

A fairly written story of the suspension of Tom Brady for slightly deflated footballs. The vendetta of the NFL and stupid actions by Brady are described relatively neutrally given the book's title. For Patriot fans, the best part of the book is the redemption of Brady and the team's amazing comeback from 25 points behind to win Super Bowl LI. A fast read and a happy one for Patriot fans.

As a Jets fan I said my prayers before reading this. This book isn’t just a fantastic read for Patriots fans but for football fans in general. I’m 30 years old so Tom Brady has been the dynasty QB for as long as I can remember. This book is an eye opener to how much work, effort and time was put into making him the GOAT he is today. As a Jets fan there’s still and always will be that little bit of dislike for Tom Brady, but after reading this book my respect for his hard work and dedication has skyrocketed. If you love the sport of football and have been around for the decade of torture Tom Brady bestowed upon all 32 teams you’ll love this book.

In my ongoing quest to better understand the universe of "The Dynasty" it was helpful to once again effectively hear Tom Brady's side of the story.

If you've read Jeff Benedict's book or watched the documentary, much will be familiar to you. Football fans will particularly appreciate the play-by-play reviews of certain big moments in games.

As a TB12 guy, I had to read this book.
In collection with other books in the last decade on the pats and Brady, this is the most in-depth look at ‘deflategate’.
The authors pull from a wide array of sources and do a good job and indicating how the whole saga impacted different people involved.

The books timeline was from Tom’s rookie year to 2020. Most of this book is found in just a few episodes of Brady’s documentary “Man in the Arena”. Still a fun read with unfortunate info about his coach and NFL commissioner not mentioned in the series. #GOAT
