Wyoming cop, John Ryan, receives a package of letters from a recently deceased priest addressed to John’s late father, begging for his forgiveness for something the priest had done. Unravelling the story behind the letters leads John to the remote fishing village of Broken Falls, Newfoundland, a place filled with strange and colourful characters, whose secrets are as old as the village itself. As he attempts to find out what it was the dead priest did – and how he died – John must confront his own past and the secrets that his father tried so hard to hide.
Broken Falls This is a good, sad tale of a wash-up cop trying to found himself again. He haven’t hit rock bottom, but he’s almost there. With most of the world against him and the cop needing change, he find it in the most unlikely of mysteries. While the mystery good and keep things interesting, it the exploration of human more darker nature that drew me in. Our cop is a good guy, but bad decisions and life events conspired him into a hole. As he tries to solve his mystery, a somber, yet likable, at least relatable cast, of characters join him. Many of them just trying to get through life in a town that is struggling to survive. And the mystery is good as well. Our poor cop, while never really searching, is always finding himself deeper and deeper trouble. As a reader, you want to root him on, but can’t help but wonder what the end result will be. This mystery an exorcism of ghosts of past as well as seeking out hope for a future. A problem that many people can relate to.

What else can be said about this. A wonderful crime drama that sends us to the town of Broken Falls. Derek paints a vivid story through the eyes of John, a cop trying to run away from his problems. Can't recommend this story enough. A brilliant page turner that really drew me in to the story. strong characters and strong writing. Will look forward to reading more from Derek.
I haven't enjoyed a crime thriller so much in many years. I was pulled in by the story and the story telling. The writing is spectacular. Derek Flynn has a way with words. I'm looking forward to reading more from him and imagine his work will be on screen someday.
Broken Falls is a slow-burn thriller that drew me in and really held my attention. The characters are well drawn and the story keeps you guessing to the end. Recommended.
