I started this book, because I liked the show - well until that final - but I have to say I found some of the chapters very difficult to read. I understand trying to give each of the Queen's there own handwriting, and I admire the dedication at sticking to that, but - cursive handwriting is difficult to read anyway, when you throw in the fancy loops I find it almost impossible. I had to skip Rhina the Riddle's chapter because I just couldn't understand it.

I thought this book was AMAZING! No joke, this book is now one of my favorite books of all time. I definitely want to say kudos to Daron Nefcy, who is an absolute idol. Thank you so, so much for bringing this book to life and thank you for the gift that is Star vs the Forces of Evil in general. When I first got the spell book, I was head-over-heels in love. This thing is my baby and it hasn't left my side since I got it.

So first off, I noticed that there was a Glossaryck eye in the top gem of the cover and I realized how much was put into the book. The authors did a spectacular job of including so many little things that I can't help but be appreciative. The back note on the sleeve of the book was great. Glossaryck's personality makes life worth living and him talking about pudding while laying on a donut is absolutely perfect. When I opened up the front sleeve of the book, I read the note from Daron Nefcy and my excitement could not be contained. I never knew that she was the voice of StarFan13, but I respect her even more for it. Not only did she create the show, but she also voices, too, and that is super cool. I love that she even explains how the book came to be in my possession. Continuity errors are the worst, but there was not a single one in this book. She reveals that she is a Deadhorse from her Aureole sign and I'm a Deadhorse, too! And so are Marco and Moon, which makes me really happy. Moon and Marco are people that I relate to and I love them so much. However, when she first mentions that there are signs I'm like, "What." There's basically a new kind of Zodiac thing on Mewni that I'm just hearing about now? How fast can I find the page with the signs? Turns out, since the signs are in the middle of the book (in Celena's chapter), it took me a while to actually get there.

Anyways. Daron Nefcy also mentions that there's a secret language and this is brought up in Glossaryck's spiel as well. My reaction: What is this, Gravity Falls? ;D But I'm honestly a little bummed that there are multiple pages of languages I couldn't even begin to comprehend. How am I supposed to decode it? In fact, Eclipsa's chapter has two whole pages that are written in Low-Mewnian so that her husband Shastacan couldn't understand it, but I gots to know.

The first page just sets the best tone for what the book is like. Glossaryck in a schmexy pose, introducing himself. I'm not sure if the book calibration-eye thing even worked for me, but I still did it twice. Glossaryck, as always, is confusing, especially when he says that he has existed forever, but wasn't born until quite some time after that. I like the theory with the silkworms reforming the destroyed pages, but I'm wondering why they were never mentioned before. Furthermore, Skywynne (the first queen of Mewni in the book) isn't even the first queen! She's the 27th, but the original spell book got burned down when the Butterfly Castle was burned during Skywynne's reign. So this isn't even the first time a spell book has been burned in a fire, which leads me to believe there may be some greater forces at play here. I mean, I actually think that Glossaryck knows more about everything than he lets on. And sometimes that makes me dislike him. But, you know, I'm a hard-core fangirl and all I really want is to get my hands on the first spell book, too. That, and go to the Butterfly Castle library and reference Crescenta's Spells volumes 1-26.

So, Glossaryck created the Magic High Commission to serve specific purposes. Heckapoo for interdimensional travel, Omnitraxis Prime for space-time, Lekmet for entropy, Reynaldo the Bald Pate for enforcing orderliness, and Rhombulus for warfare. What the heck even is entropy? Hold on, lemme look this up. Huh. Okaaaayy. It's either 1) a physics term meaning a thermodynamic quantity representing the unavailability of a system's thermal energy for conversion into mechanical work, often interpreted as the degree of disorder or randomness in the system; 2) lack of order or predictability; or 3) a logarithmic measure of the rate of transfer of information in a particular message or language. If you take out its English and Greek roots, it means 'inside' 'transformation.' You know what? I think I'll just go with the symbol down at the bottom of the page that looks like a Jimmy Neutron logo, and we're just gonna say Lekmet does science. Except not anymore because he's dead. (Too soon?)

I'd never heard of Reynaldo the Bald Pate before. He looks like a toga-wearing giraffe monk. It explains how he's no longer on the Magic High Commission in Rhina's chapter due to the fact that, in an attempt to make Reynaldo like riddles, Rhina cast a spell on Reynaldo that made him only speak in riddles. He seemed kind of useless anyway, though, considering that (at least on Mewni) there wasn't orderliness. Throughout this entire book, there have been on-and-off wars with the monsters. That just doesn't seem all that orderly to me.

I like that there are some things in the book about science-y things like heat transfer where there's a long educated explanation and even an equation. I think I'll make a list right here of my top favorite queens featured in the book (but in no particular order): Skywynne Lavender Butterfly, Eclipsa, Crescenta, Celena, Comet, Moon, and Star (duh). Actually, my favorite character in the whole show is Eclipsa, and my favorite character on Earth is Janna. Eclipsa is just so marvelously different and I love everything from her fashion, her name, her personality, to her cheek emblems. I'm not so sure that I like Globgor, and definitely not Meteora, but Eclipsa manages to make it work I guess.

Janna is fabulous. I love how creepy she is, how she doesn't give in to the patriarchy, and I love how good of a friend she is to Star. I love how every chapter contains diary entries, pictures, a flashcard about the queen (or boy prince), an explanation of the wand, the Millhorse, and spells. Festivia's and Comet's chapters even contain recipes and those will be put to good use by yours truly.

I didn't like Jushtin all that much. First of all, his name is extra af. Second of all, he might be good at math, but nothing else. He can't spell, he has really low scores on his flashcard, and his "cru" isn't as lit as they may believe. He was a spoiled boy prince that should not have been given the wand. The wand is a prestigious magical object that is meant for the matrilineal line anyway. Solaria was more worthy, but I couldn't get over her hatred and rage. She made a good queen, but she was hell-bent on killing as many monsters as possible, which is what I believe drove her daughter Eclipsa to the Prince of Darkness, and monsters in general, I guess.

Even though I'm not a big fan of Solaria's violent nature, I do like her wand. It's a sword, which is totally kickass. I'm not completely sure why Solaria was taller than every other queen, and even her own brother. 6'3'' is kind of unbelievable, but I'm sure it served her well in battle. I do respect Solaria on the grounds that she don't need no man. I shipped her and Alphonse, and it even ended up with Eclipsa as a result. I kind of like that she never married and she raised her daughter on her own, but maybe Eclipsa wouldn't have been the Queen of Darkness if she had a healthy male role model in her life. And let us not forget what Solaria did to Mina Loveberry. Mina was just an innocent Mewman girl until a few spells turned her into what I would classify as a monster. And after she lost her marbles, she tried to go after Meteora. (Spoiler alert: That didn't end well.)

It kind of surprised me when I realized that Mina is older than Eclipsa. But I'm guessing that's a part of the spell. At least Solaria is smart enough to classify the monsters she's obsessed with destroying, but when she listed all the battle spells to hurt them with and said that they were happier that way, I knew she was more ignorant than I gave her credit for. I'm not gonna lie, Eclipsa's drawing of her and her mom when she was 7 is the most precious thing in this world.

Okay, time to talk about The Forbidden Chapter. Honestly? Not that dark. But definitely a little radical and teen-spirited. I love her parasol. I legitimately want it. Even in the last episode of Season 3, Eclipsa looked incredible when she used the wand. I want to wield it. I can't believe that Eclipsa has dated every kind of monster, or at least the main ones. I, myself, wouldn't want any of them. They're either too monster-looking or too monster-natured, like, they would kill you if need be. And I'll never understand how on Mewni Eclipsa fell for Globgor. Ugh. He's got the weirdest hair, doesn't wear real pants or a shirt, and has too many eyes.

On another note, I'm not certain as to why Mewmans think monsters are so horrible. They might look scary and try to take your land, but that's only because it was theirs in the first place. And you simply can't go around judging books by their covers. I would say that the only exception would be the Septarians. They are truly cold-blooded. (;D Lizard humor.) And if a Mewman and a monster can conceive, as evidenced by Eclipsa and Globgor, they can't possibly be all that different. At that point, it's just prejudice. Though, I do think that Meteora is an abomination. Not necessarily because of what she is (except for the fact that she can eat people or suck out their soul or whatever), but because of what a truly awful combination of Globgor and Eclipsa she is. Even as a baby she was hideous! Her name was Miss Heinous. She had that weird top of white hair on her head and in her fullest monster form, the only thing that made her half Mewman was the cheek emblems. (I apologize if that was a little rant-y and offensive, but it is what I believe.)

Most of Eclipsa's spells were pretty mean-spirited, but she wasn't evil. I believe that her situation forced her to be a darker queen. She was married to Shastacan, for corn's sake! (I don't think I could have lived like that either.) On the pages that are written in Low-Mewnian, there is one thing I can make out. Eclipsa has her parasol pointed directly at what appears to be a Septarian, Seth to be exact, aimed directly at his heart. So now I'm wondering if the spell that Moon used in the Moon the Undaunted episode is the same one Eclipsa used to see her hated foe devoured. Hmm...

Festivia seemed extremely clueless. She didn't really care that the Mewmans were fighting the monsters for years and she never even questioned if she was truly a part of the Butterfly lineage. This is where we get into some real deep questions. Was Festivia just any old peasant girl? Where were her true parents? Can just anyone use the wand and wield magic? What about the cheek emblems? Can just anyone turn into a butterfly-Mewman hybrid? I have way too many questions and not enough answers, so come by me, Season 4!

Sometimes it's way too obvious that Star is related to Festivia. I did not like Dirhennia's chapter. I mean, how do you even pronounce her name? And she's quite obviously not a true Butterfly. Even if her mom was adopted or whatever, Dirhennia didn't have the capability to use her wand or experience Mewberty. She writes in balls, which is apparently a language, and she just mopes about. That is no queen. I couldn't have been happier when Crescenta took the throne instead. I was grateful that Dirhennia's chapter had Bobipsa's Wanted poster, at least. Rhombulus had always confused Eclipsa with Bobipsa, so it was nice to know that she really did exist.

Crescenta is over-qualified. She was almost too good. I mean, hello! She even came up with a spell to give herself 8 hours of rest in 4 minutes just so she could use more of her time doing productive things. She probably made more spells than all the other queens combined. But she was extremely lonely, and it never explicitly said anything about a hubby. I'm not quite sure how Rhina came about, but I was highly convinced that Crescenta was in love with her best friend, Emily. I also love her cheek emblems. Bunnies!

So, halfway through the book, there's like this Table of Contents made by Glossaryck and Mewberty information and Glossaryck's room, etc. Classic Glossaryck, just putting stuff in wherever he sees fit. In Glossaryck's room, I might add, there is a drawing of Comet and a smaller drawing of Rhina. I know that Glossaryck liked Rhina because of her riddles, but Comet was his favorite. And on this sort of Glossaryck Bucket List page I found, it says "Fall in Love" and it's checked off. Now I'm really intrigued.

Rhina was a strange little wackadoodle, but she was interesting. Her best friend was 1/4 owl and she had a turtle with a top hat. But what the heck was going on with her wrist? They never went into detail about that. Wait, if Rhina had Celena with a Lucitor relative, wouldn't Tom and Star dating be a little incestuous? I get that it's super distant, but just knowing would give me the heebie-jeebies.

Celena's chapter was pretty cool. I love her wand because it's actually a fan she can hide behind. The Ode to the Pumpkin I Grew is something I want to listen to in real life. I am happy that there were tarot cards. I've always wanted tarot cards, and now I finally have them! I wasn't too keen on cutting them out of the book, however. Damaging books just isn't in my blood, but in the end, I decided it was best. I kind of made a mess of things, but I blame Glossaryck.

Estrella was something else. She didn't say much other than describing her drawings. She was awful quiet, too. I do so wonder what exactly was going on in that head of hers.

Comet was an extremely strong queen. Married and pregnant all before she became queen. And divorced later. She even tried to strengthen monster and Mewman relations, trying to redesign Mewnipendence Day and make a peace treaty. Sometimes I wish she had succeeded. I'm not entirely sure how Toffee killed her anyhow. You know, that begs a question. If Comet was Glossaryck's favorite, why in the vast multiverse would he ever help Toffee in Season 2 when he took over Ludo's body? Anyway, I have to give credit where credit is due on those pie recipes. I'm looking forward to making them, but definitely with Earth ingredients.

Moon is QUEEN. As in, yaasss queen! I love her wand and her relationship to River. Lil' Chauncey is adorable, and I have high respect for the young queen that blasted off a finger of a certain Septarian. Did I mention, she's a Deadhorse like me?! (Eek!) What's not to love? Especially when she loses her marbles. Waaaaahhh...

Star is the greatest. That's totes obvi, but I love how it starts when she first met Tom and they started dating. We finally find out the history of her horns and get to see photos of Tom and Star when they were so young-looking. Compared to last season's finale, they have grown a lot. I love that Star has a picture of one of Marco's picture day photos as a kid. He is adorable and Starco is totally cannon, btws. That entry about Star's thoughts on Marco has too many totally's in it, which means what we all know it means. Winkity-wink-wink.

Okay, final thoughts: Vincenzo is the best Millhorse ever and I'm utterly overflowing with eagerness about writing my own chapter. I disregard the fact that Ludo even had the book at one point, I'm just gonna start on my flashcard, my portrait, my poem, my wand, my Millhorse (Vincenzo, of course!), and all my spells. Glossaryck didn't say to put diary entries in it, but seriously? How could I not? I have nothing else to say except that I recommend this book to fanboys and fangirls that need to hop on this SVTFOE train and most definitely to those that already have. This book is LIFE.

Every information about the queens is really great and you really would hate some, Glossarycks highlights is good too. Though some of the queens hand writing is hard to read.

So, because I'm an idiot, I bought my husband this book. Actually, I bought him three books. He doesn't like to read. Let me reiterate, I'm an idiot.

There are two cartoons he likes (well, there are a lot of cartoons he likes, but there are two he watches in my presence that I find borderline. Most of the others, I just hate): "Gravity Falls" (OK, I kind of like that) and "Star vs the Forces of Evil" (too noisy but the end song is awesome). So when I was DESPERATE for gifts for him, and let me just point out that our anniversary, Christmas, his birthday, and Valentines day fall within a 56-day period (leaving 309 days blissfully gift-giving/torment free), and found books on a subject he liked, I bought immediately. Revisit idiot topic. He doesn't like to read.

BUT: the Gravity Falls books I gave him for Christmas, he liked. Revise idiot: I'm a genius! So I shut my eyes, threw two shirts in, and wrapped this one up for his birthday. He opens it, gives me the fish eye. I told him one of the reviewers said it made up for the chaos of last season with Ludo and the book (or was it the season before? I never watch). He reads it faster than the Gravity Falls book, tells me: it's great. Again, I'm a genius. As are the authors.

(He's getting books for every holiday now....)

I was hoping that this book had some lore from the series, but all I got was a few past queens diary entries. Some had activities like pie recipes, or tarot cards, but that's not really what I was looking for. I liked reading their first page, where each queen has a rhyme but the real entries weren't interesting. There were no puzzles to figure out. The thing I liked most was figuring out the made up symbol language to read a page, but it didn't say anything particularly important. Some of the fonts they use for handwriting is hard to read. It seemed really unlike the one in the show, and I was really disappointed to find nothing special.

I already love the lore of the show and already wanted to read the book for a long time. The book is imaginative and creative in portraying the lore. Read this if you're suffering from writer's block for your fantasy novel (like me, eheh) or just want something fun to read.

But if you want to watch the show, don't watch the final season. Just don't.

It was hard to concentrate on, i really liked the concept of the book but because of the different writing styles it was sometimes hard. Luckily i found someone who made an "audiobook" on YouTube! This helped a lot. I recommend reading this book with the audiobook. It's not that hard to find on YouTube 😊

For folks interested i have an ig:@the.book.of.today

See you all next book!

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this show and so I wanted this book in my life so so badly. So a big thank you to my fiance for giving me this one as a Christmas present! This was just so much fun to read, notes here and there by Star, of course a Star chapter. But also tons and tons of information on Glossaryck, on the queens (and prince) before Star. About Mewni through the years. Spells, family, wands, everything you want to know about the characters is in here. I loved how each queen/princess did their own thing for their chapter. From normal writing to text messages and balls. It was great fun. Though, at times it was a bit hard to read because some had handwritten fonts and it took me longer to read those. At the end there is also room for your own wand/spells. All in all RECOMMENDED if you saw the show and want more!

This was really enjoyable. This book provides a lot of details and insight into the characters, world, and lore of Star VtFoE. There’s spells, recipes, anecdotes, and explanations for how the family and parts of the war against monsters came to be. You definitely want to watch the show first because there are some spoilers here as well as details that may not be caught or appreciated if you don’t know the references. Lots of humor as well as brief exploration of deep emotions, such as when mothers/queens die and pass in their magic book to their daughters, how different queens deal with the role and responsibilities, etc. Overall a fun read and helped me keep the family/timeline straight. Also social commentary on colonialism and racism and sexism, wrapped in a cute package of a children’s book and children’s tv show lol.

I read this on and off for a while whlist reading other books so if you were to sit down you could probably read it a lot faster. as a fan of the show i really enjoyed the book and its formating it made you feel like a princess of mewni ready to start wreaking havoc with your wand. its really well presented with the hard cover and there is even a space to write your own spells and story like the queens before you as well as some other interactive details. the only downside is that some of it is quite tricky to read as it is in cursive but i did eventually get though it and overall the differnt styles of writung for each queen really added to the feeling of realness for the book. i also used this as a prob at a cosplay convention so theres that bonus too.

Excellent, excellent stuff! Loved reading about the past queens and deciphering all the codes. Although I think there's another set of codes that haven't been cracket yet? It also appears in "Star and Marco's Guide..." Would love to know about this!

Really, really wish Goodreads could give more than just your standard 5-star rating because I would put this book at 4.98 stars ('cause that's a thing). One: my Aureole sign couldn't be farthest from the truth (Pixie) when I really should have been a Blowhole. Two: really, REALLY wish we got to see more of Star's chapter in this book (tho I suppose that is Star's fault to begin with ahaha. Blame the nonexistent cartoon character).

So glad I got this.

Much like Gravity Fall's Journal #3, The Magic Book of Spells takes a fictional book from a cartoon and makes it real. The book gives brief accounts of the previous 12 Queens of Mewni prior to Star Butterfly. Some of these characters are very interesting and I hope we will see all of them in the upcoming final season of the show, either in flashbacks or time travel. Considering that Skywynne's specialty was time magic and one her spells was how to move yourself forward in time, I would not be surprised by an appearance. I wish the Mewni themed tarot cards had been printed on cardstock rather than standard paper, but otherwise a quality tie-in book.

This book is amazing. I really love how the queens and kings of Mewni are shown. Beautiful, sometimes tragedy history of Mewni from Skywenne, Celena or Dirhennia to the queens known in show SVTFOE, like Moon or Star. I really enjoy pictures in this book and the very personal chapters, also I think the spell section is very interesting too! I highly recommend this for special to the fans of the series, because it's really amazing journey.

I would definitely recommend this to any Svtfoe fans. It's fun to learn about Mewni's past, and the personalities of the queens are all so diverse and interesting. I'm a huge fan of Skywynne, but Celena, Jushtin, and Dirhennia are up pretty high too. There's also a code called Low-Mewnian that is introduced in this book that I had fun deciphering. I think it added a lot to the overall feel of the book, so props to the authors for that additional work! :)

Hi. Cartoon fanatic here. My sister got this while she was buying herself books for a birthday present, and I picked it up and read it cover-to-cover as soon as she put it down. This book has the same vibes as Journal 3 from Gravity Falls, with a whole lot more emphasis on the diary entries about royal life than the supernatural and paranormal creatures haunting the area.

10/10, would 100% recommend.

This book is so good, It's been my fav book since I bought it, SVTFOE has been my fav show since I first watched it, this show has inspired me in to do not give up, or always be friendly and helpful with others. As well that I have a collection of things which is: a pillow, a shirt, two Star Butterfly Funko Pop figures, Star dimensional scissors, and a couple drawings that I have done so far. I still hope a 5th season of this show, because they cancelled it in 2019, I know it's sad.

Like Gravity Falls ‘Journal 3’, it is a good complement to the series. There are several chapters or entries that were quite interesting, but they were very brief and you were left with the feeling of wanting to know more, even when I finished Star's chapter it felt incomplete and I was surprised to have reached the end of the book. In addition, there are some rather unnecessary and boring pages that do not contribute anything, they could have been used better.

I think it was so exciting to have the book of Spells and getting to know the Queens of Mewni of who their lives were and what they did to there kingdom. I think Celena the Shy is one of my favorites even though she doesn't have secrets to write on but the spells that she wrote and the poems that she did is amazing so the queens. I think i would read it all the time since its amazing.

Wonderful and interesting book that compliments the show. It helped with the worldbuilding and it's great watching the show and noticing the little references put in it. The personality implemented in the book was paired with wonderful art. I like the activity at the end of the book and its fun trying to crack the code with the text written in Low Mewman.

This was unironically the coolest book ever! I really needed to read something silly and lighthearted, so I am glad I decided to give it a try :) I love Star vs the Forces of Evil so much, and reading about Star’s family history was so fun! Also, creating my own Butterfly queen was a lot more exciting than I thought it would be.

If you love the show Star Vs. the Forces of Evil, then this book would be your best friend. I read it so many times and couldn't put it down. It has illustration of spells, fun Easter eggs about the show, and the history of the royal family of Mewni. It's so fun to read and pretty to look at. But be aware, watch the entire show before reading this, because of so many spoilers inside.

Fun lore book for Star fans, though a couple details seem to contradict the series. There's a few activity instructions and an 'ancient' language to decode. A couple of the the chapters are in fonts that are hard to read. Moon's might have been okay if the font was larger or I didn't have astigmatism.

Interesting chapters and a fun read with little bits and pieces seen from the show. Overall it was good but some chapters were hard to read with the cursive (which is understandable since they’re QUEENS) and I also thought there was going to be a little bit more in terms of spells.

cute, and a fun tie-in for people who wanted to learn more about the queens from the show. i appreciated that the art in the book (And there is a lot of it!) is made for the book, rather than just a bunch of screenshots from the show.

Its a very good book. I read it in 2 days, I just couldnt get enough of it! Although some of the queens handwritting was a bit hard to understand but it was great nonetheless! I would recommended it to any fan of SVTFOE.
