This book, The Woman’s Herbal Apothecary by JJ Pursell, is going to be part of your reference library for many, many years to come. At first I was interested in this book because of the tagline, “200 Natural Remedies for Healing, Hormone Balance, Beauty and Longevity, and Creating Calm”. Trust me, this book definitely delivers on every one of those things! However, what really impressed me about this book, and allows me to say with confidence that it will be part of your reference library for years to come, is that it is divided up into 3 phases of a woman’s life.
3 Phases of a Woman’s Life
Dawning – Menache to Twenties
Living – Twenties to Perimenopause
Fulfillment – Menopause and Beyond
The book devotes an entire chapter to each of these stages and covers the common physical complaints that each stage involves. So say we are looking at the chapter on the Dawning stage, going from the the first occurrence of menstruation into the twenties. Here are the issues covered:
trouble regulating cycles
painful menstruation
spotting between periods
breast tenderness
bloating
need for hormone tonics
headaches
mood swings
bacterial infections
yeast infections
need for birth control
Quite a complete list for consideration! If you are looking for herbal information on a subject just move through the chapter and you will find a helpful “where to begin” section. There is also a list for good ingredients to stock your home herbal pantry with if this is a common issue for you. Following is a number of recipes that will offer different benefits. The recipes have simple directions and a clear list of ingredients so you can find those in your herbal pantry to source them before you begin the preparation type (tea, tincture, poultice, herbal oil, topical wash, etc.)
A note about ingredients. Whether you are a seasoned herbalist, or someone just starting out, the reference sections are consistently laid out so you need to look up an ingredient and you will find; what phase(s) of life it is good for, the primary use, it’s herbal action (e.g. diuretic, astringent, sedative, etc) and a paragraph about the use within the book. She also includes the scientific name of each herb so you have that reference as well. And to let you know about the writing style of the author, this isn’t a dry stuffy book to read. I had to laugh out loud when I got to the ingredient “Rose Petals” because I proudly have a small jar of rose petals that I dried myself this spring so I would know that I was using an ingredient that had never been sprayed with a pesticide. Under phase of life I expected to see dawning, living, fulfillment or a combination of the three. Here is what is actually says – when aren’t roses a good idea? I guess it’s a great herb for all three!
Throughout the book you will see JJ Pursell’s personality and personal philosophies shine through making it a fascinating book to read for pleasure and general learning, in addition to using it when an issue needs to be resolved. This book has so much to offer, I hope that you will add it to your personal library and perhaps even consider it for a gift for a special person in your circle. I know that I have a lot of herbal learning to do and I’m excited to have The Woman’s Herbal Apothecary as part of that journey.
