The Woman's Herbal Apothecary is a basic and easy to follow guide to learning herbology and making your own p creations.
JJ Pursell talks you through terminology and gives you lessons about your body you may not have thought about. She suggest tinctures and teas for many female physical issues. But she also expands past those to other ideas of femininity including facial and skin care as well tricks for such simple things such as headaches.
I really like that in her introduction, she said not to leave out your medical doctor as you use these . People think just because it's natural it is ok and often times it's not. I have inflammation and kidney disease. Studies have shown that devil's claw can crash them while turmeric is safe. I will tell you turmeric has made a huge difference in my life and I advocate for safe usage of herbs and other natural remedies.
I gave this a four stars because I have not gotten to try any of the recipes but I will come back after I see how they turn out. Also, I didn't like there were so few photos especially in the section about particular herbs so that could have been better. I received an ARC through NetGalley*; I wish I had a hard copy so I could try the recopies easier.

*All opinions are my own.

This amazing book is written for women by a woman. It is a herbal guide to taking care of yourself. I love how the book is written in sections by basically age. The book uses herbs and everyone should start slowly as herbs are plants and some people can be allergic to certain ones. If you cram a whole bunch not your system at once and have a reaction to even just one you will not be sure which one. This book also tells you not to to leave your doctor out of the equation of tending to your health as well. I love that this book is using all natural herbs. With all the supplements out now days it is hard to choose ones that are all natural. This book will take the guess work out and you wont have to read as many labels. You can grow a lot of these cures in a kitchen window or even in your back yard and know for sure that they are all natural. There are 200 natural remedies in this books for all kinds of woman's ailments. It is well worth the time it takes to read and it is also a great reference book to keep on hand.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com and chose to leave this review.

Today I'm reviewing The Woman's Herbal Apothecary by JJ Pursell.

Generally I like to start out with a disclaimer. I am an atheist witch. I look for the connection between magic and science without the need for a deity. I receive no compensation for these reviews and all my links are standard Amazon links and not affiliate links. I am a practicing photo reader and have spent the last 13 years honing my craft. I offer personal readings by request and have a strong online history that boasts nearly 400,000 views.

I'll start this review as I normally do with a review of the physical book. This is a large book, the height of the book exceeds anything that would be within the realm of portability. It is also a soft cover book which lends itself to rips, tears and pages that are damaged if toss in a backpack or briefcase for travel. There is an extensive index in the back of the book, which in my opinion is required for this type of reference material. Further the book has a color code on the page ends that further aids in locating exactly what you're looking for. To me, these two things are imperative to the success one has in using this type of material. The photos in this book are amazing. Large, bright and colorful though they are sparse.

At first glance the chapters have quite interesting titles but ones that certain tell you what is included in each. For example the chapter titled Dawning is directed to women in their twenties, while Living is directed at from age 20 to perimenopause. Taking a moment to call out chapter 2 here, I would like to say this is one of the more important chapters in the book. Basically it is an alphabetical guide to herbs for women. Each herb is listed with its common name, scientific name, it's use, phase of life and herbal action. Further, the author chose to add a conditional table to this section. Here you can find conditions such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, brain support and even thinning hair listed with the herbs to support each condition. (remember to consult a certified health professional before ingesting any herbs outlined in this blog)

The section on Fulfillment: Menopause and Beyond was extremely helpful for me. The author provides the reader with recipes for teas, capsules and vinegars that assist woman in the later years of life. There is a recipe for an herbal vinegar called Apple Cider Osteoporosis Blend. Easy to make, the author instructs us to add our herbs to Apple Cider Vinegar and keep in a cool dark place for four weeks shaking daily. We then strain and use daily.

This particular mixture includes the herbs - hawthorn berry, black cohosh root, st. john's wort, dried nettle leaf and dried alfalfa leaf. While not something I have on-hand, I don't think these would be too difficult to obtain. The Hot Flash Tincture is just as easy to make. You'll find this recipe on page 169 and I bet it will be a regular addition to your daily healing rituals.

The author acknowledges that not everyone knows how to make these mixtures. Chapter 8 is completely dedicated to making herbal medicine. It explains what each are and goes into detail explaining how they work with the body. Everything from tinctures, oils, syrups and salves are included. I feel it was very thoughtful for the author to include the general dosing guidelines on page 246. Sometimes we forget that more is not always better.

As we all know ingredients matter. There is a reference included for purchasing small amounts of herbs as well as larger amounts from different vendors. I am impressed with the amount of reference included in this book. There are two pages dedicated to Herbal Conferences, Societies as well as classes and schools dedicated to herbal studies.

Over all, this is a pretty impressive book and includes a great deal of information directed towards the woman and her life. I can see this being a go to reference for me as I continue to learn and explore more about herbal remedies.

This is really a great reference book about using herbs for health. i copied down several that i will use as soon as get the herbs I need. Some are not in my herbal cabinet. I was really interested in the teas that can be used as a young woman but the one for sleep and calming were the ones I want to use first. Herbal formulas for sleep, hair, skin, anxiety, liver and too many others to name are discussed. For those interested in using herbs and natural remedies, this book is for you. JJ Pursell has done her research. It is well written and easy to understand and use. I received this book from Net Galley and Quarto Publishing Group for an honest review and no other compensation.

I have read a lot of books about herbs, even a lot of books about woman's herbs, so, of course, I looked at this critically.

I was not disappointed, on the contrary, the book is quite concise. The herbs are introduced alphabetically and their use and herbal action are explained. The phases of the female life cycle are explained and which herbs are beneficial for typical problems during those years. This is followed by skin care recipes.

Learning about herbs is one aspect of this book, but the author also introduces how to make your own herbal remedies, something a lot of books forget to mention alongside their recipes.

This book, The Woman’s Herbal Apothecary by JJ Pursell, is going to be part of your reference library for many, many years to come. At first I was interested in this book because of the tagline, “200 Natural Remedies for Healing, Hormone Balance, Beauty and Longevity, and Creating Calm”. Trust me, this book definitely delivers on every one of those things! However, what really impressed me about this book, and allows me to say with confidence that it will be part of your reference library for years to come, is that it is divided up into 3 phases of a woman’s life.

3 Phases of a Woman’s Life
Dawning – Menache to Twenties
Living – Twenties to Perimenopause
Fulfillment – Menopause and Beyond
The book devotes an entire chapter to each of these stages and covers the common physical complaints that each stage involves. So say we are looking at the chapter on the Dawning stage, going from the the first occurrence of menstruation into the twenties. Here are the issues covered:

trouble regulating cycles
painful menstruation
spotting between periods
breast tenderness
bloating
need for hormone tonics
headaches
mood swings
bacterial infections
yeast infections
need for birth control

Quite a complete list for consideration! If you are looking for herbal information on a subject just move through the chapter and you will find a helpful “where to begin” section. There is also a list for good ingredients to stock your home herbal pantry with if this is a common issue for you. Following is a number of recipes that will offer different benefits. The recipes have simple directions and a clear list of ingredients so you can find those in your herbal pantry to source them before you begin the preparation type (tea, tincture, poultice, herbal oil, topical wash, etc.)

A note about ingredients. Whether you are a seasoned herbalist, or someone just starting out, the reference sections are consistently laid out so you need to look up an ingredient and you will find; what phase(s) of life it is good for, the primary use, it’s herbal action (e.g. diuretic, astringent, sedative, etc) and a paragraph about the use within the book. She also includes the scientific name of each herb so you have that reference as well. And to let you know about the writing style of the author, this isn’t a dry stuffy book to read. I had to laugh out loud when I got to the ingredient “Rose Petals” because I proudly have a small jar of rose petals that I dried myself this spring so I would know that I was using an ingredient that had never been sprayed with a pesticide. Under phase of life I expected to see dawning, living, fulfillment or a combination of the three. Here is what is actually says – when aren’t roses a good idea? I guess it’s a great herb for all three!

Throughout the book you will see JJ Pursell’s personality and personal philosophies shine through making it a fascinating book to read for pleasure and general learning, in addition to using it when an issue needs to be resolved. This book has so much to offer, I hope that you will add it to your personal library and perhaps even consider it for a gift for a special person in your circle. I know that I have a lot of herbal learning to do and I’m excited to have The Woman’s Herbal Apothecary as part of that journey.

The Woman’s Herbal Apothecary by JJ Pursell
200 Natural Remedies for Healing, Hormone Balance, Beauty and Longevity, and Creating Calm

Beautiful photographs and illustrations supplement the comprehensive information related to natural herbal remedies for women that is provided in this book. The material provided is vast and provides recipes for women of all ages. I believe this is a great resource but also realized that a recipe may not be sufficient to take on dosing oneself without having access to a naturopath. Why? The items listed may not be easily found, knowing how to efficiently and effectively follow a recipe then store and use it may not be easy and having a knowledgeable resource to follow-up with after taking a remedy would be nice as they might need to adjust what is being taken over time. I believe it was wise and generous of the author to share her knowledge with the layman and enjoyed the way the book is laid out and easy to use. I have always had an interest in the properties of herbs and have several books on the subject and believe this would be wonderful to add to my collection.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I picked up this book from the library during a work day, and let me tell you, it’s gorgeous! My copy was brand new and it’s just so aesthetically pleasing. I started flicking though it at my desk and it opened to the page on vaginal steaming, and went hilariously downhill from there.

I took offense to JJ Pursell breaking women’s lives into three parts: dawning, living and fulfilment and not even the beautiful illustrations could get me past it. The recipes in here for medical conditions also didn’t sit right with me. I accept that this is just my personal preference, and I am completely on board with herbal concoctions as beauty preparations or for mild afflictions, just not for things that could be life threatening if not properly treated.

If you like the idea of a kindly grandma asking after your menses and recommending a salve for your vaginal fissures, then this is the book for you. It’s informative with easy to follow recipes, and plenty of information about herbs and their uses. This is generally the kind of book I like having around to flick through, usually on the loo, but sadly it was a bit too ‘woo’ for me. Still, if you’re interested in herbal remedies I think it’s worth a look.

***I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion***

This book is an excellent resource for those who are interested in becoming an herbalist, those who want to try out making herbal mixtures at home, or those who are just interested in the different properties of various herbs and their effects. There is a lot of information packed in, with a focus on women's health. There are also many recipes for herbal blends to use for specific health purposes and skincare. What I found really helpful to go along with the recipes is instructions on how to make different formulas - teas, tinctures, salves, etc. I read this in ebook format, but it is probably a better resource if read in paper format. It would have been easier to flip back to some of the resource/description lists.

From Netgalley for Review:

Mostly this was a decent book on a specialized form of herbalism, most the herbal remedy books I read are pretty wide in the range of things covered, so it was refreshing to see one specialized. I found some of the language of this book to be unhelpful and honestly a bit silly, for example in the table of contents they list the phases of a woman's life as well as cutesy names for them (like menarche to twenties being Dawning) and in the section on individual herbs they just use the cutesy terms. I would have been perfectly happy to not learn that I am in my 'Living' stage of life and I certainly hope that I reach 'Fulfillment' before I hit menopause. It was very much so the case of 'I like what they are saying in this book but wish they would have approached it differently' other than that I found the book a good resource.

I'm glad I read all the way through the book. The beginning descriptions of herbs were sometimes abstract and contradictory towards what others have done and even recipes that the author herself has listed later on (ie licorice root not for adrenal support, yet later listed as an adrenal support ingredient).
Also a bit off putting was the verbage used to describe the time periods in a woman's life where the herbs are most supportive and useful, I realize that yes, using beautiful words to describe a woman's life phases is celebratory, but it can also lead to confusion being that they seldom are definable without memorizing each one prior to reading. But that was only a bother in the beginning chapters. Otherwise, this was a useful reference for many supportive recipes for treatments, that I'm certain that I will return to frequently as I create medicines for my lady friends.

Very good herbal remedy book for menstruating people. Not dissimilar enough from Rosemary Gladstar's book. It definitely isn't exactly the same formulas, but I didn't find enough value to keep both of them.

I found way more value in Pursell's The Herbal Apothecary: 100 Medicinal Herbs and How to Use Them (obviously more universal by age and gender). As long as you have one or two other thorough encyclopedias for herbal remedies, you either need this book or Gladstar's Herbal Healing for Women (both is more than needed).

The is a good companion book to use with medical assessment. The book covers from creating capsules tinctures, teas and more homeopathic medicine from scratch. The author provides a good catalog of medical proprieties of a large amount of plants and herbs, a good reference of dictionary of terminology and good recipes and step by step tutorials.

Very interesting and easy to follow. I like the ease of reading and finding what you need to know about a certain herb or remedy. It was nicely written and not overly wordy or too mother earth sounding. Lots of good information to have on hand.

In addition to being stunning, this book is one of the most informative, approachable books on herbalism that I have ever read. As an herbalist, I love books that include not only information about the herbs and preparations, themselves, but also about the author, and how s/he came to be an herbalist. "The Woman's Herbal Apothecary" delivers in all areas. It is well written, understandable, informative, and simply very, very wonderful to read. I highly recommend this book, and plan to purchase a physical copy for my herbal library, in addition to the author's other book, which is geared less specifically to women's health. A wonderful, highly recommended read. Thank you to the publisher, who provided me with an electronic copy of the book free of charge via NetGalley. I was not required to write a review of any kind. The sentiments here are my own.
