Whether it’s Romance, Suspense/Thriller, or Fantasy, there are always big heroes to root for, smart and resourceful heroines, and a ton of heart pumping excitement in every story.
Mimi lives with her extremely patient husband (“Be right there! Just one more page, honey!”), two pirates-in-training (their boys), and their three spunky dragons (really, just very tiny dogs with big attitudes) Snowy, Mini, and Mack, in the vampire-unfriendly state of Arizona.
Check is book three in the series, Mr. Rook’s Island, by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. I’m trying to think of something witty to say to start out this review and I’ve got nothing. Because there is nothing I can say that will really express to you what a complete crazy, wild ride this book is, actually the whole series is. You really do need to read them in order. Each book starts out right where the previous one leaves off. This book is the finale of the three.
As I said, we start right up where book two left off. James Rook is completely in love with Stephanie Fitzgerald. He loves her so much that he has renounced his vows as a monk so the lagoon that has kept him young for over two hundred years no longer works. He is aging very rapidly and has very little time left to live.
Stephanie has fled the island. Rook has no idea why. They were supposed to spend his final days together. Stephanie found out what really happened when her sister disappeared. Rook lied and she just wants to get away. She both loves him and hates him at the same time. But Rook wasn’t the only one who was keeping secrets. Stephanie had to get the money somewhere when she wanted to come to Rook’s Island. But she didn’t hold up her end of the bargain to Warner Price, the man she got the money from, so now he wants her. Stephanie finds herself captured by Warner and his goons so it seems like Rook isn’t the only one who only has a little bit of time left to live.
I have to hand it to Stephanie, she thinks fast. And she comes up with a way to buy herself a little more time. Unfortunately, it puts her back face to face with the man she hates but can’t stop thinking about either. One look into his eyes and she finds herself falling for him all over again.
Everyone in this book has been keeping secrets. There is so much going on and you get one big surprise after another. There are no slow spots in this book at all! It takes off right out of the gate and you won’t catch your breath until the very end.
This book does have a conclusion so you aren’t going to be left hanging but you know Mimi Jean and her devious mind. She leaves that little wedge in the door, just to keep us on the edge, for something more. Mimi Jean, what would my life be like without your books in it? Well, I think I can answer that. My life would be a lot less exciting, that’s for sure.
So, ladies and gents, buckle your seatbelts nice and tight because you are going to need them. If you haven’t started the series yet, now is the perfect time. Settle in because you won’t be stopping until you get all the way through. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did! And welcome to Rook’s Island, the destination that you will never forget!
This book was not utterly predictable like so many third books are. There were a lot of twists and turns that went in unexpected directions. I was pleasantly surprised. Chances are great that at some point I will re-read this series. I really enjoyed it. A big getaway from the standard romance fare. Props to MJP.
What a wild ride this series was! I'm not sure how to describe it. It's a bit of the Twilight Zone, a bit of Fantasy Island and a bit of Nancy Drew. Weird combination right? Put it all together and you get a very unique storyline that will teach you to live life to the fullest and love can conquer all.
This is not a standalone and you do need to read these books in order. I also recommend reading Wilma Salinger's part after the story. Once again, I'm not sure where the author is going to take it which just gets my curiosity going. ARC provided by author.
After renouncing his oaths, Rook ages really fast. He only has a few weeks to live. He hoped that Stephanie would spend his final days with him. Stephanie is gone. She has finally found her answers about her sister Cici’s death thanks to Rook's aunt. She feels betrayed and sad and she does not want see Rook again. When she arrives home, she will be captured by Warner Price who wants what he was promised. Price will blackmail Rook with his only weakness, i.e. Stephanie.
This is the point that we have two major sacrifices: one from Rook and one from Stephanie's father.
Rook will be back and he is out for blood. So many secrets! Old doomed enemies, a psycho aunt, Father Rook, hidden places inside the island.
Stephanie will have to make the ultimate sacrifice.
“And if I get in?” His hazel eyes speared me. “It’s suicide. You know that.” “But I could save him, right?”
The story heads to an unhappy ending until the final awesome twist. What has had really happened to all these dead people?
This is book 3 of the trilogy and it is not a standalone. The story of Rook and Stephanie was a combination of passionate love, mystery, sacrifices and fantasies that come true.
That was some finale! I never knew where this book was going to take me next. It hit the ground running and never stopped until the end, and wow! What a ride! There is no way I saw this story playing out the way it did, and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.
After the cliff hanger that left us knowing the truth about Stephanie’s sister’s death, I was skeptical as to how Rook was ever going to redeem himself to Stephanie. I was curious how Stephanie was ever going to escape from the criminal that captured her. Was Rook going to retake his vows? Was Stephanie ever going to forgive him? How does a celibate monk get a happily ever after in a romance novel? So many questions!
Mimi answered every one of them, and did it in such a twisty storyline that I never saw it coming. Considering they were on an island where fantasies come true, I should have. This series was a real treat, and with the epilogue, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we haven’t seen the last of the guests and hosts inhabiting this sometime creepy, sometimes evil, always beautiful tropical paradise.
Mimi’s stories have a way of soaring past me so quickly. I sit down to read them, and the next thing I know, I’m finished. She takes the reader along on a journey, traveling at such a breakneck pace, and I love the fact that I become completely engrossed in her books to the point that the rest of the world falls away. The Rook’s Island series stranded me in a forbidden paradise, and kept me captive by its magic long after I finished.
WOW! What an incredibly twisty, curvy, thrilling ride! Mimi Jean provides another super original romantic suspense that gripped me from start to finish. I never saw it coming and yet I did because I know that with a Pamfiloff you should expect the unexpected.
I'll write a better review later, detailing all the curve balls... not! But I did wanted to tell you guys something I don't think I've ever mentioned about her books. You know how some authors name their chapters or include meaningful epilogues that show they took time and care into every element of their book? Mimi does something I haven't seen anyone else do. She includes an authors note. Gasp! Of course other authors include notes at the end, but not like hers. She adds a book breakdown besides telling us about the origins of her stories which usually include some great life lessons. And I love them because they help with the book hang over and give you food for thought until her next release.
Epic Mind F*** has you hopping out of the frying pan and into the fire!
At the end of Pawn we had a doozy of a cliffhanger. Thanks to Auntie sociopath Stephanie has finally found her answers about her sister Cici’s death. Betrayed and heartbroken by the man she loves, escape from the island couldn’t happen fast enough. Unfortunately her plan to turn Rook over to Warner Price is swiftly ended when she arrives home only to have Price looking for her. He doesn’t care what she has to say, his patience has worn past thin and her time is up. It’s time to pay the proverbial piper and he’s out for her blood.
Tossed in the trunk of a car and certain she will not live to see another day, Stephanie's only hope is to appeal to Price’s greed. She expects death is coming but hopefully if she plays what few cards she has left right she will get to see Rook pay for his betrayal before she dies.
James is devastated to learn that Stephanie has fled the island without a word. With his vow broken he has weeks perhaps only days to live and he won’t even get to spend them with the woman he loves.
As tempers flare and emotions rise, Check takes you on a twisty roller coaster of a ride as each person makes decisions with devastating consequences. You can’t trust anyone, nothing is what it seems, and betrayal is lurking around each corner. The emotional investment is high as you race through the pages trying to find who, if anyone will survive.
Mimi Jean Pamfiloff expertly f’s with your mind in this finale with characters that you can’t help but love, and hate in equal measure all while hoping there is some redemption and karma in the end.
He took a vow of poverty and chastity, long, long ago but that was before he met HER. Now James Rook, once the owner of a magical island and dashing creator of dreams come true is alone and dying, Stephanie has fled the island without a word.
Even with all of the secrets his has shared with her, all the truths he has told, he kept the one dark secret that Stephanie needed answered, what happened to her sister? How did she die? But someone told her and she ran, right into the deadly arms of a vile loan shark who wants the money she borrowed to get to Rook’s Island back, with interest.
Betrayed by Rook, alone in her misery, she strikes a deal with the devil, a deal which could get both herself and Rook killed not to mention those who have known the magic held by the island. All because they both were betrayed and their hearts crushed.
Will Rook re-take his monk’s vows and once again swim in the waters that have given him eternal youth? For that youth, there is a price to be paid, but to save Stephanie, Rook must consider it, no matter it will mean he will have lost her forever.
What can I say, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff NEVER, EVER ceases to amaze and entertain me! This time out, she had me by my heartstrings in CHECK and wow, was I hurting for these characters, and I do mean ALL of them!
As usual, Ms. Pamfiloff pulls this one off in her classic style without a single misstep! What a story, what twists, what a tsunami of emotions and what an ending! Read the series, feel the magic, the love, the adventure and the joys of dreams coming true, then realize the price that was paid…or was it just borrowed? Brilliant writing, magical romance!
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Mimi Jean Pamfiloff!

GOOD. NESS. This conclusion stole my breath and nearly caused a fainting spell!
I don't do spoiler reviews and as I sit here trying to put some words to paper, I feel like anything I say is going to do just that, so instead I'll say this. This was an outstanding conclusion to a remarkably original storyline. It was an emotional roller coaster ride that sent you on another dive as soon as you leveled off and each twist left you feeling disoriented. YES! It was great!!
I can not elaborate on the plot more than the blurb because I am scared of spoilers. Needless to say this is the conclusion of Rook and Stephanie's story and boy it's a doozie. I was able to guess certain aspects of the story just because in my mind that was the only way it could have happened. But the end left me all giddy and satisfied.
MJP writing as always is tremendous, her active setting sweeps you away to that Fantasy Island. First person POV that alternates between Stephanie and Rook, which is the first time we get Rook's perspective on things and that really adds to the story. Of course no MJP story would be complete without the smartassed heroine, Stephanie, making inopportune remarks, which gives this dark romance a great sense of humor. For all the twists and turns and the merry chase MJP led us on it ends fantastically.
I normally don't do gifs in my reviews but this is appropriate
Hell yeah, the final installment didnt disappoint.
There s action, drama, suspense...and the ultimate sacrifice the heroine makes to save the man she loves all the while he's been doing the same thing for her...
Damn, this thing called love...it s complicated when it shouldnt be...lol And when added the fantasy factor to the mix, there s no greater adventure than given here...
Although this book can be read as a stand alone, it is the third and final book in the Mr. Rook’s Island series. When last we saw our heroine, Stephanie, she had been kidnapped by mobster Warner, from whom she borrowed the money to get to Rook’s Island. We find her locked in his trunk and believing he is about to kill her. Using her head, she tells him that she knows how to get the money she owes him and promises that she knows how to get him to the island, which is what he really wants. Warner comes up with a plan which forces Rook back into the magic lagoon but at a terrible cost. Will he be able to save her? Will he be able to save the island, and does he really want to? The twists and turns in this book will keep you turning pages when you know you should be doing other things! In the end, once again Mimi Jean leaves us wondering if this is actually the last we will hear of Rook’s Island! This reader hopes not!!
My goodness woman!!! Boy you love to deal your magic wand of mind fuckery and give us readers heart palpitations, serious leaky eyes, and the classic "ahhh Damn it woman". If you haven't read a Mimi book this is just the beginning of symptoms of the Mimi Jean Pamfiloff syndrome. Other symptoms include rapid heart rate, really hot gods, really hot vampires, really hot doctors, really hot Mermen, really hot Jocks, really hot King, and now a really hot Rook. Snarky, headstrong, stubborn, beautiful, smart-ass tendencies , so smart it can be scary, and the vendetta starting-but realizing- you might be wrong-but still can't trust you yet-despite what my lady bits are saying. If sounds right up your ally then proceed.
Check is the "final" book in the series and doesn't disappoint. Honestly when she says its the last in a series in MY opinion its really not cause she is the Queen of Cliffhangers and she got the ability to write an amazing ending still make it a cliffhanger (i.e. Ten Club, Accidentally Series, Merman Series, Happy Pants you get the point). The evil genius can do anything and we loyal Mimi addicts will read and love it all the same.
Stephanie has been shown some truths and didn't like it one bit. It took a lot for her to trust herself to love and be or feel loved in return. With everything happening in her life so fast, she leaves only find herself in even more trouble. A forgotten debt has to be paid and Rook is the only one who can pay it and save the woman he loves desperately. Rook had enough of the sacrifices he has made over the course of his long life. The one thing he wants for himself is Stephanie and a family for them to create together. When he realizes she has left him, Rook resigns that that dream won't come true until he gets word that the love of his life is in trouble in the worst way. Will he sacrifice all of his newly discovered hope in love and the potential to finally be free to do as HE see fits with his life? Can he live out the remainder of his life without the one precious being that makes it worthwhile?
Mimi Jean Pamfiloff knows how to weave a fantastical tale of love, sacrifice, the stubbornness of two headstrong individuals, and make you question if you had the opportunity to do what the characters in this book world, would you? Check gives you allll the feels and it's definitely a page turner.
This last book of the series seriously qualifies for a total white knuckle ride. This is Mimi Jean at her finest, doing what she does best. Messing with the readers reality. She had me checking mine once or twice during this one, along with a couple of "wait, what?" moments. Book three picks up right where we last see Stephanie, in the trunk of Prices car, headed to parts unknown. He wants his money or her life or both. He keeps her locked up for a few days, she's all for self preservation here and makes a deal of sorts to draw Rook's attention. Rook who didn't know she even left he island or why. Thinking fast she's trying her best to stay alive and gets Price to contact her father who she knows will contact Rook. She knows he's got money. Money she hopes will keep her alive. Contacting Rook, her father goes to the island and sees Rook and a plan is made. The book moves fast, the plot line is sleek and there's a lot of things that happen in between the pages as well. Rook travels to meet Price and his Stephanie and they return to the island together. Rook and his island family have a plan in place. So many twists and turns and truth is I felt like MJ upended Rook's plan, she's such a clever twisted writer. It's a fast read that will keep you turning the pages and certainly captivated. Don't even try to guess where it's going, just hang on and enjoy the ride. It's a wild one. I'm anxious to hear more of Wilma's story, which you'll find a teaser at the end of this book.
I Love Mimi! She is one evil author! LOL. She takes you on a roller coaster from start to finish.
Book 3 start with Stephanie in the trunk of Mr. Warner's car on the way to who knows where. How can she get out of this alive? He wants Rook's island and she didn't deliver. Now she had to pay. At the same time Rook has given up his vows and is aging fast. Can he save her? Does she want a life with him if he does? All your questions will be answered, if your lucky but a few more may crop up. Is this the end? Is this Checkmate or is there more to come?
Guess your going to have to read it to find out, but i can tell you that you won't be disappointed.
I read a complimentary advance copy of this book which I have voluntarily reviewed.
A refreshing change, so different from anything else out there. Please read this only after the others, the story is continuous and very important for the full effect to read in order. We get answers to questions we never thought about and answers we've been dying to know. I love how we get an official ending but we also get to hear from Wilma, a special guest we've been following since the beginning. The queen of cliffhangers just can't help herself but be open to possibilities, I love that! Never a disappointment with her books. I received an early copy, wrote my unbiased review voluntarily.
This series was a whirlwind of wildness that I'm not sure how I could ever possibly describe it other than you should invest in to read. A splash of Fantasy Island for the vibe, all three books leaving you wanting more even when it is at the end. I went into this book with an open mind much like I do with every one of Mimi Jean's books. I also did my best to brace myself for the unexpected. I enjoyed all of this wild ride and that ending has my hunger for more grumbling in the pit of my stomach.
OH MY STARS!!!!! WOW! Just WOW!! I devoured this book. I just couldn't put it down. I can't believe the twists & turns in here. Although, after reading a number if Mimi Jean's books, I shouldn't be surprised! To get the full effect of this book, you DO need to read the first two. Things won't make too much sense if you don't. I'm not sure I'm ready for this particular literary universe to be closed, though. The end was completely dramatic, thrilling, exciting, & yes, happily ever after, kind of. I wouldn't mind a little more, though. Fantasy Island was always a fun concept & sometimes dark, in nature. Thanks, Mimi, for bringing a new fantasy into being. I WILL definitely be reading the series from beginning to end(???????) to satisfy curiosities of what is "hidden" in the story. Thanks, again!!
Mimi Jean returns us to her twisted version of “Fantasy Island.” The Island draws people to it. To heal or to die. Rook and Stephanie are battling each other, the island, family and fate. The question who will win and who will loose? The series is dark but it does have its lighter moments. I mean what woman wouldn’t want their wildest fantasies delivered to them on a lush tropical island, but beware there’s always a catch. I recommend you take a chance and see if the series takes into its fantasy.
Oh wow! Thank you Mimi! An awesome series. There’s still twists and turns a plenty in Check. But thankfully there’s no confusions or questions left unanswered, in this entry to the series and the story thrilled me to bits. I really couldn’t work out how this one could end, it really blew me away. I loved it! This is a terrific series, very different and the characters were very good, some very unique and mysterious, and the story line has to be read in order as they are not stand alone but are definite must reads! It’s been a crazy ride, thank you!
In ‘Check’, things do come to a head and with several twists and turns—this can range between absolute nuts and sort of believable if you squint—, somehow Stephanie and Rook break free of their curse, the bad guys miraculously get what they deserve and all’s well that ends well.
There’s no secret really, that I’ve found this series of Mimi Jean Pamfiloff’s a little too zany for me, but the odd licks of the paranormal and the mysterious here and there keep me coming back. There are tantalising ideas here—with part-gothic, part-supernatural vibes, with the sacred and the profane crossing so many times that this should be a sultry and deliciously forbidden read—but they aren’t fully realised or deeply explored enough given the novella-length stories in this entire series.
But ultimately, too much of this story I think, depends on having a huge suspension of disbelief here in the existence of the paranormal, which is all well and good. Still, Pamfiloff’s implicit insistence that some things should stay unexplained (skirting paranormal explanations by simply having the characters choosing to not want to know more for the sake of their own sanity) just might not be good enough when it comes readers like me needing a semblance of explanation for events that don’t entirely really make sense in a story because well, it still needs to be satisfactorily coherent and not cross the line into the ridiculous.
Still, what kept me on the back foot really, was also a ‘heroine’ whom I absolutely loathed by the end of the series. While Rook himself isn’t all that innocent, the self-sacrifices he made in contrast, simply showed Stephanie up as petty, vindictive, petulant and fickle by the end of it all…too small-minded not to grasp the bigger picture and made things all about herself and her own tragedy.
In any case, it’s been quite a ride. I'm not too sure still what to make out of this, but this series simply felt like it could have done much more and reached so much higher than it did.
Thank you to Miss Mimi and her team for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of another wonderful, satisfying book. This is a very quick read, and continues on from where Pawn left off. With this being an ARC review, I don't want to spoil anything for readers, so this is a bit tricky.
Suffice it to say, there's the usual twists turns and intrique we get in this series, a few surprises, and if you want a really big surprise, read the little bit at the end, if you're not into surprisy spoilerey kinda maybe cliffys, don't read it!!
All in all, an awesome series, with some loveable characters, and some not so loveable, but hey, we need a bad guy from time to time, and of course a much anticipated HEA in lots of ways.
The mind blowing conclusion of this crazy wild island adventure that will leave you breathless. This final chapter starts where Pawn left off and continues on the same twisted and exciting ride to the very end..... Loved it!
James is at the end of his long life and was looking forward to spending the last of his days with the only woman he has ever loved. However things are never just easy cut and dry right. Stephanie has just found out the truth about the man she loves and is in grave danger from the man that funded her trip in the first place.... Could not get enough of every heart pounding and thrilling word.
This is not my first Mimi Jean Pamfiloff book, and if there's one thing that i can't get enough of this author, it's the fact that you will forget that there is no physical act of sexual contact, but the chemistry and the tension is so strong, that you are just as mesmerized as if there was some. Check is no different. Although there are some sexual scenes, i can't say that it's the most i've read from her. And i loved that. I loved the fact that this series concentrated on the mystery behind the island, on how the members of a family managed to keep so secret for so long, and how one girl will be either the salvation or the end of all those that live there.
I started this series from the beginning, waiting weeks, sometimes months, between each instalment, and i wasn't disappointed with the wait. It was totally worth it because this author has a way of spinning her tale to a point where you need the time to come down from all the emotions you went through from reading each book.
Check was the finale of the series, and totally the ending i would have wanted. It explains everything. From the disappearances, to the calling of the Lagoon, to the fact that people seem to be going back in time, and especially, it explains more of the history behind what happened that fateful day that made the lagoon what it was 250 years later.
This is the kind of book that i love to read from Mimi Jean Pamfiloff - the mystery, the humor, the sexiness and the epicness that is her storyline that will keep you coming back each and every time.
**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**
Thanks to the previous book ending in a cliff hanger, this book does not disappoint and takes you on so many twists and turns that this mindfuck of a book turns things you think are going to happen into something else.
There is also an extra little tidbit of a tale at the back in regards to Wilma, and a possible spin off series that may come after.
LOVED this book and it certainly really gripped me as i finished this book in just.one.day. It started at a run and went full pelt until the end and i was left there thinking, OMG, this books was awesome.
The final installment of Mr. Rook's Island, at last. We are gifted with Ms. Pamfiloff's signature humor and wit. Moreover, we finally understand the mystery behind the island and the curse. Yes, there is an HEA, have no fear. And there's still the smoldering chemistry between Rook and Stephanie. My only gripe (and it's a small one), is that I wish book #3 were a tad bit longer. I'm thrilled the series is wrapped up in a nice tidy bow, but everything happened so fast at the end, I wanted to savor it.
Still, fans of this series will be satisfied with the ending. Onto the next series!
Loved it! We FINALLY find out how/why Cici ended was on the island in the first place. We see Stephanie go through hell and come back stronger with a sense of clarity she's searched for the entire series. I love that we got to know Rook's aunt a little better. The multiple plot twists had me on a rollercoaster of emotions but I wouldn't habe changed a single one. And at the end we figure out why we've been handed little snippets of Wilma throughout the books. Mimi is indeed an evil genius.
