Quincy Harker #3

Damnation: Quincy Harker, Year Three

Rate this book
"Quincy Harker - demon killer, monster hunter, & kin to Dracula, yeah, THIS is who I want protecting the world! I love these books." (Academy Award-winner Whoopi Goldberg)

She gave up her divinity to save the world. Now, Quincy Harker has to track down a bunch of missing archangels to find Glory's wings. If only getting her wings back were as easy as ringing a bell.

Also included - the Harker weird Western short story "Redemption Song", originally published in The Weird Wild West Anthology.

They are humanity's defense against the supernatural. They are the light in the darkness. They are the guardians who walk in the night. They are the Shadow Council.

Quest for Glory, Book I collects the four novellas from Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter, Year Three. The story concludes next year in Quest for Glory, Book II.

Calling All Angels - This Shadow Council Case Files novella features Jo Henry, great-granddaughter or legendary steel-driving man John Henry, as she searches for an angel in an underground cage-fighting ring. Jo finds more than she bargained for when she stumbles across a fighter who is more than meets the eye.

Devil Inside - Quincy Harker takes center stage to battle a demon in the City of Churches. Harker hunts an angel in Charleston but finds much more as he fends off attacks from local magic users and a vengeful demon summoner determined to do to Charleston what General Sherman didn't - destroy it.

Angel Dance - What brings Victor Frankenstein's most famous creation to New Orleans? Well, it ain't the Cajun food, so it must be the jazz! Adam Franks searches the bayou and the back streets for an angel, but finds fire, murder, and blood instead in this Shadow Council Case Files novella.

Running with the Devil - We all have our quirks, but Quincy Harker gets downright fetishist in the finale to Book I. He descends into Purgatory, not the dimension, but the long-running roving party run by a man who might just be a lot more holy than his job would evidence. Then he's thwarted by a troupe of men (or more) dedicated to "bringing light". Harker learns a lot about the Original Lightbringer in this climactic cliff-hanger of a season finale!

Damnation
Quest for Glory, Book 1
By: John G Hartness
Narrated by: James Anderson Foster
This continues Quincy Barker Demon Hunter books # 9-12. The Shadow Company is helping Quincy and Luke,(Dracula)find the rest of the demons involved in the slaughter of their friends and who cut off the wings of Quincy's guardian angel. Oh, they can't ask God to replace them, or any archangel to ask God because they are all missing! I'm this book, they are tracking down angels, fighting demons, and hoping hell doesn't make its way to heaven while there is no one to guard the place! Lots of action, unpredictability, angels, demons, magic, bit of gore and lots of craziness! I did like that two of the stories were from minor players but very interesting. One was Jo, I think that was her name. She carries a big hammer. Descendant of John Henry. The other was Adam Frank, known by most as Frankenstein 's monster. Those were good!
Read these collections in order for the best enjoyment. Quincy Barker Year One, The Cambion Cycle, then this one. I can't wait to get the final one, Salvation!
This has been such a wonderful series!
Great narration!!

About the Book: Glory, Quincy’s guardian angel, gave up her divinity, her wings, to help him save the world. In return this gang of unlikely heroes set off on an adventure to help her restore it, and learned some shit they would have rather not known, like, ever. To solve this extreme little problem they might just need God himself. And that means – they need to find the big bad angels of the top tier first.

My Opinion: Don’t get me wrong, still a great book(s). Characters are very well written, their stories absolutely essential, I just didn’t like them, personally, as much as I learned to enjoy Harker’s brand of humor. Plot was superb tho, very fun, made sense, offered new, and unique adventures, and perspectives. All in all, another fine book, just lacking in Quincy Harker, and his Uncle Luke (Dracula) as a direct consequence.

I’m always a fan of authors that use multiple POVs, preferable separate (like one per chapter) since it seems not all authors can write multiple POVs one after another as in multiple per chapter. The author does a good job with that. While I love the narrator's voice when he does Quincy, I’m a big fan of Adam’s POV.

My biggest issue with this story was the part involving Jerome. I felt there was a lot of information left out/questions unanswered, whether on purpose or not, seemed unlikely they’d been on purpose though (explained further down). Also the fact that this is the "Quest for Glory," yet she was barely mentioned in this book.

As always, the narrator does an awesome job! He definitely brings the Quincy character to life.

Top three biggest questions… they’re so big they need to go about the Questions/Comments section. That’s how big they are!

1. If God left his realm because he wanted to punish his archangels (have them take care of the humans), how did they not realize he’d been gone since basically the beginning of time?

2. Why would God have had the archangels prior to creating the humans or was he preparing for something? (Getting philosophical here.)

3. Why did the archangels decide to leave?

4. How did the demons know God was misplaced and Quincy and gang were looking for the angels?

Questions/Comments:

At the beginning of part one, Joe ends up showering after her match. Who uses a scrunchie to wash their body with?

While I usually don’t like a big recap when going from one book to the next in a series, I can’t remember how Joe and friends acquired Michael’s sword. Was that from Luke?

I still can’t figure out how Joe knew where to find Michael/Mitchell. She mentions looking for a fighter, but with there being so many people in that city, where would she have even started?

I swear with the repetition of Joe telling Jake that he didn’t have to turn around while she showered, she really wanted him watching her. Was that just me?

So, Leon in the game store is sitting in his magical circle. I assume it’s similar to a witch’s circle? If so, why was there no mention of him closing the circle after Mitch joins him (to keep the bad stuff out)? Or is it not like a witch’s circle?

Why did Mitch have the scars on his back as though his wings had been removed?

There’s the part when Jerome is getting ready to open his front door and the demon blasts him backward. Adam is there to save the day. When he first sees the demon, he describes it. Then after moving toward Jerome, who’s on the ground unconscious, he looks back up and describes it again, but using different adjectives, albeit meaning the same as the first ones.

I have several questions relating to Jerome:

1. Adam mentions that the only thing remaining of Jerome’s house were the front concrete steps.
What happened to the rest of the house? It seemed like the majority of the bad stuff the demon let loose was directed to Adam who was closer to the street than the house.

2. What exactly happened with Jerome after he came to? It’s like he gets knocked out, comes to (I forgot where), and is back to work like nothing happened.

3. Did he ever see his house?

4. Did he ever wonder what the beep happened to him?

5. Why was the demon trying to kill him if he was no one special? That made no sense to me.

6. Adam later states that night that Jerome should be fine now and didn’t feel like he was in any danger…even though he’d been attacked just a few hours prior. That made no sense to me either. If the demons wanted to kill Jerome, why would they stop after a single attack?

There was an inconsistency I came across when Adam was describing how it wasn’t possible to do an autopsy on a vampire. First, he says that vampires are dead. Makes sense. But then, he says that you can’t do an autopsy (minus the fact they’re likely to turn to dust or explode) because they’re still alive after death. I don’t remember the exact wording but just listen to the part after Adam comes to in the nun’s castle or whatever it was called.

I loved the character Sparkles. He was funny, especially his interactions with Adam when he’d try to hang up on Sparkles.

This is a review of Quincy Harker Demon Hunter year 2 to 4, four books (The Cambion Cycle, Damnation and Salvation) which is turn is a collection of shorter novellas, books 5 to 16, in the Quincy Harker Demon Hunter series.

In short, these are great books somewhat ruined by a absolutely shitty ending of the fourth book.

Quincy Harker is the same foul mouthed, kick-ass, authority hating hero as ever. I really like this guy. He is surrounded by a bunch of equally likable friends (well, friends and friends, everything is relative) that are almost as foul mouthed and snarky as well as kick-ass as himself. The bantering between them is in a class of its own not to mention when he gets started talking smack to the bad guys.

Speaking of bad guys, most of them are quite good, or at least well done, characters as well and the half bad ones who occasionally sides with Quincy and his band are often quite cool.

The menagerie is quite extensive starting with Quincy’s uncle who is actually Count Dracula himself, relatives of Van Helsing, Frankenstein’s monster (who is actually a quite cool guy), Angels, Archangels, Demons all the way to the horned guy himself. It is all well done without going way too far out which is something that many authors do when they try to achieve more and more outrageous (cheap) shock effects.

Of course there’s plenty of action. Really cool action I might add and of course the action is accompanied by a healthy dose of foul language either as internal monologue or smack talk to the various persons or creatures that are about to have a very bad day.

As the books are actually made up of four individual small novellas they are kind of divided into four distinct chapters. Sometimes a chapter is told from the viewpoint of Harker himself and sometimes from the viewpoint of one of Harker’s friends. Normally I’m not too keen on switching viewpoints like that but it works quite well and the chapters tie nicely together and advances the story in a coherent way. One part was actually a prequel and in some others Harker was on the run. Both things I generally do not like but in these books it actually worked for me.

The books for year two and three easily gets 5 out of 5 stars from me but then we get to the 4th year.

Now this is perhaps a bit unfair but then reading as well as making reviews is hobby for me and I do not pretend to do professional reviews so I could not make myself give anything more than 2 stars for the fourth year book.

The book is as good as the other (almost) up until the end where the author decides to destroy the happy ending with an absolutely atrocious ending. There’s absolutely no justification for the crap he pulled. It was just a really cheap way of trying to make people want to read the next book in the series. In one of the books the author writes “This isn’t some M. Night Shamalamadingdong movie, just going for the cheap plot twist.” which I thought was quite funny but then he goes of and produces this ending which, to me, is just a cheap plot twist.

That ending really ruined the books for me and in addition, after having more or less behaved in the previous two books, the author decided to start to sprinkle woke rubbish all over the place again. I do not need bullshit phrases like “white boy” and “…brown skin have some representation inside the government.” in my books. Skin colour is not a qualification of a persons value or capabilities. At least not outside of the small and loudmouthed group of far left woke oxygen wasters.

So overall, great books but instead of getting a total 5 out of 5 they get a 4 out of 5 stars average from me.

Yet another fun installment of the Quincy Harker series. In this book, the team goes out to find some angels. We get a direct story featuring Jo Hancock and her perspective. We also get to experience life through the eyes of Adam Franks, another great character. The book also has two stories with Quincy and his luck/lack of luck in trying to find angels.

I still love the writing style and characterization of the Harker books and the testament to Hartness’s writing style. The book is chock full of snarky badass people doing impossible things. The fights are written in a clear and accurate way with plenty of realistic gun fights and magic fights. We get to go deeper into some side characters and more into the relationship between Harker and Detective Flynn.

Unfortunately, I feel that the rhythm of these stories is getting repetitive much like the first two books. Harker fights a bad guy which pisses off an even bigger bad guy and Harker fights him too, usually until he is almost dead. Then, the bad guy is either beaten by Harker or his friends or runs away before he can be beaten. I like the characters and I respect the author for approaching this recipe in a few different ways this time but I have resolved to take a break until I go back to Book 4.

Regardless of the somewhat obvious pattern in these stories, there are still a lot of fun to be had and some awesome stories of kicking demon ass and saving the world to be experienced.

An enjoyable continuation of the story, Damnation carries on nicely from The Cambion Cycle: Quincy Harker Year Two. This time around Hartness has decided to mix things up a bit, and instead of the novels being mostly based around Quincy Harker, this time we get some stories from the perspectives of other characters. Its nice to see the narration shift, with both Calling All Angels, and Angel Dance having a familiar, but different feeling to them (told from the perspectives of Jo Henry and Adam respectively).

It's actually one of the Quincy Harker stories that lets the collection down. Devil Inside is a bit dull, especially when compared to the last few books that precede it.

Overall, good to see something a little different

Hunt

Excellent stories! I give this book 10 stars! Glory has lost her wings and demons are causing lots of problems in Charlotte. The hunt is on to find the archangels so they can call God to come back to take up his place in heaven.
Quincy is very busy, Becks is back at work and the Shadow. Council is very busy as well.
Luke is going to get a surprise and Sparkles is very active.
Enjoy theses stories because I love them . There is some tie ins to Cassidy Kincade and Curiosities and Soren.

I love how exquisitely John Hartness can weave novelle's together and throw in a sweet short story to boot. This collection gives us two from Harker, one from Joe Henry, and one from Adam. Seeing the "Harkerverse" from different angles is amazing and John is able to make each main character feel just as real in the moment as Harker does. Unfortunately for the reader, this work leaves you hungry like a famished vampire outside a closed bloodbank as we have to wait for Quest for Glory book 2.

Year 3 contains four different novella's in the Quincy Harker world. I really enjoyed the fact that two of the books are written from the perspective of two different characters, Jo, a decendant of John Henry, and Adam who is Dr. Frankenstein's monster living in our modern age.

John Hartness books in the Quincy Harker series just keep getting b

Excellent read! Funny, action packed, magic infused. Perfection!

As always, John knocks it out of the park. A fun book that simply won't allow you to put it down. Be ready to annoy your spouse by ignoring all of your chores and "honey do's" until the end of the final page. Thanks John!

This collection of short stories will not disappoint anyone who loves Urban Fantasy. Quincy Harker is a great character and the people that he surrounds them are even funnier and are enjoyable to read about. My favorite character would have to be Adam, because he has an interesting perspective because of his supernatural origins. Greatly recommended!

Bang

Well this year went out with a bang. Most of the stories in this year followed some of the council members as they tried to locate the archangels and fought baddies along the way. This season definitely went out with a bang and a complication that seems to show season 4 is going to be a doozy. I’m hoping the other members of the council get stories next season as well.

fantastic storytelling.

These are wonderful interconnected tales, that keep the pages turning and the books coming - great series. I am so glade I discovered this author in an anthology with a short story, earlier this year. Somehow I have read as much as I can find, borrow or get from a library. And hopeful of many more.

Another hit!

Boy oh boy, I can’t wait to start reading your four in the Harker series. Book 3 was very exciting. My one complaint and most of these novels is that the fight scenes are too long, too descriptively long.

Regardless, that does not diminish my enthusiasm for the story. I skimmed through the fight scenes and move on to the meat.

Outstanding

Usually in a series there will be a few episodes that are less exciting than others. I haven't run into one of these yet. The plot twists in this episode were surprising and have left me eager for more.

A awesome adventure into the mind of some amazing characters

This is the third book in the series. It just keeps getting better! Quincy is irreverent mouthy and doesn't take flack from anyone. I highly recommend this book and this series. Hope you get your unicorn Mr. Hartness.

Fun magical series. Light-hearted fiction that's really 5 mid-sized shorter stories with a common theme with characters introduced in previous stories. Warning, the banter is witty but vulgar making this a grown up tale and an easy listen.

The Quest for Glory kicks off during the Quincy Harker season three, and may be the most ambitious story Mr. Hartness has ever attempted. He has promised a total of eight different stories between seasons three and four.

Season three introduces the Shadow Council, members of an organization protecting humanity from things which go bump in the night. Most of the members don't have much problems finding Bad Things, as the Council members also live in the night - Quincy Harker's uncle Dracula and Adam, Frankenstein's Monster - just to name two.

The Quest for Glory is off to a great start with this book.
