OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

Ah we finally get to see Shinra vs Arthur, that was badass.

So Shinra is being controlled by some chick convincing him to destroy everything. Arthur decides to help him by beating the shit out of him. A good old fashion duel that ends in a cool way. We then quickly learn of a new Pillar that is coming, the 5th, meaning Shinra is his fire company have to get to her before the crazy Evangelist get their hands on her.

This means a few fire houses have to work together leading to a badass brawl between them and the Evangelist. Shinra goes head first half one of the big guys and well, this is a fantastic back and forth battle. On top of that Arthur goes for the main evil girl we've seen before. And this new chick, who can sense when fires are going to happen, is a bit batshit insane.

As always, highly entertaining. I really enjoyed this volume, probably one of the best ones so far on the action side of things. I'm eager to see how Shinra is going to win and also what this fifth pillar chick is going to do. A 4 out of 5.

I read a digital copy of this book.

At the end of volume 11, Shinra has seemingly turned on his Fire Force comrades. He's claiming he is done being a hero and is overcome with a need to seek revenge for what has happened to him, his mother and his younger brother Sho. Arthur steps forward to face Shinra head-on, challenging him to a fight to prove who is better once and for all, a hero or a knight. Throughout this time, Shinra is being controlled via an Adolla Link where a mysterious woman named the First Pillar is whispering in his ear. Shinra eventually breaks this link, but not before finding out that his mother is potentially still alive, and there is soon to be a new Adolla wielder. This is where we meet Inca, a headstrong teenager who is using her newfound adolla powers, that manifest to allow her to see where a fire is about to start, for her own gain. She approaches a site where a fire is about to start and robs them before the fire force shows up. When a batch of over 8 infernals pop up, Company 8 know they will find her there, but also know they'll find the Evangelists there too, looking for their new pillar.

I feel like this series has kind of lulled with me. Despite the plot now moving on, slowly but surely, it's a bit stagnant. We now know there will be 8 adolla pillars that will be united under the evangelist to bring about another cataclysm. Inca seems like a cool character and I'm excited to see whats coming with her character but I do wish something would happen a bit faster.

The new character that’s introduced is awesome! I love her! Easily blasting her way to at least my top three favorite characters (haven’t solidified an opinion yet).

But so much happens in this volume! To the point we learn that there are at least three more new characters coming before the final battle! So excited!

But once again, Tamaki is freaking annoying and useless!

This series has 34 volumes.

Read as part of Omnibus Volume 4:

Well so much for duel to the death. We get a flashback to Arthur’s abandonment and promotion to annoying delusional sidekick. But the fight just goes on and on and one with so much talking. Then much later we get to meet another sociopath adrenaline junkie. She shows up with the whole so many infernos and evil White Robes happening all at once. If I’m reading this world right, if the captian of station 8 had not asked for help the other Fire Soldier units would just ignore a town being destroyed with its population because the assigned unit would be fine? They just send a unit and let things happen if I’m reading the reaction to reinforcements show up correctly.

5/5 Stars (%87/100)

Better than the previous volume mainly because of the new arc (the Fifth Pillar Arc). The first couple of chapters are like a treat to Shinra and Arthur fans. The mysterious entity from the previous volume is revealed to be the First Pillar and it makes sense why Haumea is the Second Pillar not the first. As obvious from the name of the arc, this volume mainly focuses on a new character named Inca. I hate Inca and she really annoys me. However, I have to admit she has a super cool ability. In short, I think it was a really good volume and the new arc starts out strong.

As usual, a new volume closes the fight from a previous volume while it ends with a major fight to be concluded in the next volume. Like the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, nothing ever changes in the world of manga. That being said, the conclusion of the fight from the previous volume is amazing and with the revelations made, it easily allows us to jump right into the next fight with little to no need to hype its importance up through chapters upon chapters of exposition. It appears that the newer manga on the marketplace have all taken up the charge to eliminate ceaseless and needless tottering as they saunter onwards to the next plot point at full speed or rather steam ahead.

This volume is especially amazing because Arthur and Shinra fans finally get deep intriguing character interactions and developments. The insights into their friendship as well as their competing beliefs of being a hero vs being a knight is childish, yet endearing, yet inspiring and hypes up readers. While Arthur does have a tragic backstory which is treated with as much comedic flair as some aspects of his character by the writer, for better or worse, some of the characters do call it for what is. As usual though, Arthur blocks out that which he doesn’t want to hear. I wonder if, like his past implies, it is some sort of coping mechanism to escape reality to allow him to function in a society where those with family, money, and strength are praised and blessed with prosperity

Overall the fight is amazing and the way its concluded is pretty fantastic. Ultimately, as a fan of these two characters and their interactions I loved it.

I did and do dislike the new character and wonder if she will simply join the antagonists. I cannot see how she fits in with the fire force.

One thing of note is the volume has one pretty gruesome death so perhaps those that are on the queasier side of things should skip a few pages when the new character is introduced.

Ay, no.

This volume is awesome. While the last one was mostly recovery and windup, this one hits the fever pitch again. It introduces an interesting new character, a massive conflict, and is just plain a blast.

And it has one of my favorite exchanges in the series, reminding me why I love it.

“Then what does being a grownup mean to you?”

Obi’s answer to that question is why I read comics and manga.

This volume contains chapters 97 - 105.

Shinra becomes possessed (mind control) by the First Pillar. He fights Arthur and regains himself. We learn more about Arthur's past and are introduced to a new character, Inka, who becomes the Fifth Pillar. In an attempt to keep Inka from the White Clad, Shinra battles Charon.

Lots of action in the beginning and end of this volume.

Was a better volume than last one. Had some Arthur and Shinra backstory that brings some new light to the story moving forward. This new Fifth Pillar arc is interesting. Didn’t think I’d like who the Fifth Pillar would be but they have a really interesting power.
